Forever Giants:1977 San Francisco Giants Year 20 (95)

Wednesday, February 18, 2015

1976 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season. The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

1977 77-85
C Marc Hill .75
1B Willie McCovey  1.2
2B Rob Andrews .05
SS Tim Foli -.25
3B Bill Madlock .9
LF Darrell Evans 1.2
CF Derrel Thomas 1.2
RF Jack Clark 1.65
OF Gary Thomasson 2.2
OF Terry Whitfield .85
2B Vic Harris  0
LF Randy Elliott  -.3
SS Johnnie LeMaster -1.1
C Gary Alexander  0
C Mike Sadek .65
CF Larry Herndon  -.25
SP Ed Halicki  5.7
SP Jim Barr 1.2
SP Bob Knepper 3.35
SP John Montefusco  1.4
SP Lynn McGlothlen -1.35
RP Gary Lavelle 4.6
RP Charlie Williams .9
RP Dave Heaverlo 1.9

-The worst stretch for Giants baseball in three decades continues here despite the return of a now 39 year old McCovey who passes Marichal on the all time WAR list. I dont remember the season with great clarity, I was 6, but this was my first Giants club.  It's a wonder I kept going.  Speier doesn't keep going, he leaves for a decade, but he'll be back.
