Forever Giants:1997 San Francisco Giants Year 40 (115)

Friday, March 13, 2015

1996 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season.  The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

1997 NL West Champs 80-82 (lost NLDS to Marlins 3-0)
C Rick Wilkins  .45
1B JT Snow 2.2
2B Jeff Kent  3.9
SS Jose Vizcaino 2.45
3B Bill Mueller 2.1
LF Barry Bonds 8.5 MVPQ
CF Darryl Hamilton .45
RF Glenallen Hill -.3
 OF Stan Javier 3.15
IF Mark Lewis -.2
C Brian Johnson 1.35
C Damon Berryhill .2
OF Marvin Benard -.45
SS Rich Aurilia  1.05
SP Shawn Estes 4.65
SP Kirk Rueter  3.35
SP Mark Gardner  1.3
RP Rod Beck 1.25

-This is still not a very good team, a below .500 pythag club; but we won the NL West, then got swept by the Marlins (I was at both of the road games, both walk off losses).  Sabean's now GM, Dick Tidrow the farm director. Bonds has another MVPQ season. Interleague play starts this year and we won the first ever game; Brian Johnson beat the Dodgers in mid September in an all time great Candlestick moment.
