Not a Penalty?

Not a penalty.  Love you, NFL.  Mean it.

2013 Survivor Series Preview

The Internet was invented in the fall of 1994.

That was my experience anyway. I shouldn’t universalize.

In the fall of 1994 I was required to get an email address for a Business Associations course I was taking in my third year of law school. I didn’t have a computer; it would be a few years before I accessed the internet outside of a public space; which explains why my first searches on one of the eight computers with dial up access in the law library weren’t “Ashley Judd” + “boobs” but instead “world wrestling federation”.

Soon, I found out why Hulk Hogan had that black eye at Wrestlemania 9; soon, I found out why Jim Ross kept disappearing; soon, I found Ashley Judd’s scenes with Luke Perry in Normal Life; soon, I was politely asked not to return to the law library.

I turned 24 in the fall of 1994, a time when wrestling fans either age out of the demographic or become lifers – over those next 3-4 years those initial searches would lead me to trading VHS tapes from Japan, and an appreciation for a form of wrestling that wasn’t designed for children.

I stayed. I maybe should not have stayed.

The problem is that WWE largely programs for children; I want to buy suplexes and they want to sell catchphrases: Hulk Hogan became the Rock became Yawn Cena. Sure, some days Chris Benoit wins the title in a 4 ½ star main event of Wrestlemania XX – more days he loses it a couple months later to Randy Orton and is never heard from again.

I mean, except for the other thing.

Bryan Danielson was the face of a really significant upturn in American independent wrestling quality in the 21st century; young wrestlers had grown up with those same Japanese bootlegs and incorporated those styles into their matches. This summer a confluence of events led the now Daniel Bryan to reach as unique a position in WWE as I can recall – where he was (1) clearly the best wrestler in the company (2) clearly the most “over” wrestler in the company (3) clearly positioned by the company to take over the top of the card.

When last we left this space, walking into Summer Slam, Daniel Bryan was about to win the WWE Title and go on one of the best workrate runs in promotion history. It was entirely possible that, as did Bret Hart at X and Chris Benoit at XX, Daniel Bryan might well be in the main event of Wrestlemania XXX.

As does everything good, that all got shot to hell.

That’s been my experience anyway. I shouldn’t universalize.

Survivor Series is Sunday.

WWE Title: Randy Orton (c) vs Big Show
-Following Bryan’s defeat of Cena at Summer Slam in a 4 ¼ star match, he immediately lost the belt to Orton after a Pedigree from a heel turning HHH. The title was then held up for a month and a half while Bryan was repeatedly screwed over (in storyline, of course, such a thing would never happen behind the scenes) by the extended McMahon family out of a view that he was not worthy to be the face of the company. Cheers for Bryan, of course, got louder and louder in arenas throughout the country as fans backed their favorite as he fought the clearly unfair attempts to hold him down, and naturally, after having the rug pulled out repeatedly – Bryan finally got his redemption, proving he wasn’t a “B+ player” (language attached to him by HHH which clearly only makes sense to tie to the ankle of a babyface if he then goes onto disprove it) and rewarding those fans for their steadfastness with a hard earned victory.

Nah, that didn’t happen; he got screwed again, Randy Orton regained the belt and The Big Show was moved into the top babyface challenger position as the guy fighting management oppression and soaking up what had been Bryan’s “Yes” chants.

But at least it made fans mad at Hunter and Steph, right? So, all good. Go read Grantland if you don’t understand how that works.

This will not be a good match and Orton will keep the belt.

Result - This was not a good match and Orton kept the belt.

World Title: Yawn Cena (c) vs Alberto Del Rio
Cena’s loss to Bryan was to be his last match until, at the earliest, the Rumble – but the company’s dependence on the only babyface the fans (particularly the young fans) can count on to win in the end wouldn’t allow that. He returned several months ahead of schedule and took the secondary title from Del Rio. This is a rematch. Cena doesn’t appear ready to wrestle yet which drives down this match quality. He keeps the belt, one assumes. If you detect a lack of enthusiasm for the top of the card, believe me, I'm mustering all I have just to type the next lette.

Result - This was a pretty sleepy match and Cena kept.

CM Punk and Daniel Bryan vs. The Wyatt Family (Luke Harper & Erick Rowan)
The consolation prize for Bryan is what looks like a run with CM Punk; Summer Slam may have been a swing and a miss to Vince McMahon, but also contained the WWE Match of the Year, Punk losing to Brock Lesnar as part of his long feud with Paul Heyman.

Punk eventually came out on top and with he and Bryan both moving on they found themselves thrown together in a hotshot angle against the creepy Wyatts (one of whom is good, one of whom is not, neither of whom is Bray Wyatt, the team leader and only real attraction, who is injured).

This will be good, better than that if they get time and the Wyatt who isn’t any good stays out of the ring. I’ll say the heels win, but not with any confidence.

Result: 3 1/2 stars, 17 min. Best match of the night; babyfaces won.

Elimination Match: Cody Rhodes and Goldust, The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) & Rey Mysterio vs. The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns) and The Real Americans (Antonio Cesaro & Jack Swagger)

This is currently the only men’s traditional Survivor Series style match on the card. The Rhodes Brothers are, improbably, the tag champs, having taken from The Shield. Goldust is in terrific shape and really works well in small doses in the WWE style; I’m less positive about Cody than are some others, but he’s perfectly fine in this role. The Usos are Rikishi’s kids and solid workers; there’s indication that HHH wants to refurbish the tag division, were that to play out, they’d be good hands. Rey hasn’t worked a major PPV since the Rumble; that he’s just a guy in what is just a match (in the way that, for example, HHH would never have been positioned when returning after an injury) reveals how WWE views him, both currently, and within their history.

The heel team contains two of the hundred best wrestlers in the world in Cesaro and Rollins, two really solid workers in Ambrose and Swagger (that’s overly fair to Swagger as he hasn’t developed as much as is ideal – current conversation is the HHH has directed developmental signings away from guys like Rollins and Ambrose and Cesaro – guys with independent backgrounds – and more toward guys like Swagger who haven’t been…tainted…I guess, with learning how to wrestle a non WWE style. So, if you’d like fewer CM Punks and more Mason Ryans, listen to HHH) and Reigns, who apparently is thought of as a future main eventer.

This is probably a good match; my guess is it’s match of the night with the babyface team winning.

Result: 3 1/2 stars, 23 min. Second best match of the night - heels won with Reigns eliminating Mysterio to be the sole survivor.

Elimination Match: Natalya, The Bella Twins (Brie and Nikki Bella), The Funkadactyls (Naomi and Cameron), Eva Marie, & JoJo vs. AJ Lee, Tamina Snuka, Kaitlyn, Alicia Fox, Rosa Mendes, Aksana, & Summer Rae

WWE has a reality show on E featuring the women on one team – the women who aren’t on that show are on the other team.

Result - Reality show team won.  Not good.

IC Title: Big E Langston (c) vs. Curtis Axel
Langston just took Axel’s (Curt Hennig’s kid) IC belt – he keeps it here in a short match.

Result: Langston kept in a short match.

Miz beats Kofi on the pre-show and that looks like it’s the entire card. If you’re wondering where Dolph Ziggler is, I bet he is also.

Result: Miz beat Kofi on the pre-show, they also added a short Mark Henry win over Ryback.

Just as I did with the Wrestlemania and Summer Slam here is every match in Survivor Series history ranked. The match times are rounded and they are followed by my star ratings for all of the 3 stars and up matches.

#FarewellCandlestick: The 100 Greatest Moments in Candlestick Park History #39

#40 is here.

#39 June 15, 1963 34 Years

Going to the bottom of the 8th, San Francisco and Houston had combined for a total of 1 hit, a Williw Mays first inning single.

Neither team had placed a runner in scoring position.

In the 8th, doubles by Jim Davenport and, with two out, Chuck Hiller scored the only run the Giants would need - Juan Marichal beat Houston 1-0.

It was the first no-hitter the Giants had thrown in 34 years, since Carl Hubbell in 1929.

Marichal allowed only two walks and struck out five.

#38 is tomorrow.
