What is this all about?

Here are all the October 7 games that mattered in San Francisco Giants history.

1962 World Series Game 3 - 71,000 paid at Yankee Stadium on a Sunday afternoon, we split the first two at the Stick, Billy Pierce for the good guys, Bill Stafford for New York, a combined 9 hits for the two clubs and we're scoreless through 6. They got us in the 7th with 3 runs, with 2 out in the 9th Ed Bailey closed it to 3-2 with a 2 run homer, but that was the final.  We're down 2-1. Game 4 is tomorrow.

1987 NLCS Game 2 at St Louis we lost game 1 yesterday, this is a Wednesday afternoon in front of 55,000 at Busch - Dave Dravecky throws a complete game 2 hit shutout. Will Clark hits a 2 run homer in the second off of John Tudor, two innings later Jeffrey Leonard hit his second series homer and we cruised to a 5-0 series tying win.  1-1 and we're headed home for the first San Francisco playoff game in 16 seasons.

1989 NLCS Game 3 home vs. Cubs we split two at Wrigley and now head home for Game 3, 62,000 at the Stick on a Saturday night, Mike LaCoss goes for us and gives up 2 in the first on an two out Andre Dawson single. We came right back with 3 in our half against Rick Sutcliffe. Singles by Butler/Thompson and an intentional walk to Mitchell loaded the bases with 1 out.  Matt Williams grounds out, but that gives us a run - and then they intentionally load the bases for the second time in the inning with a free pass for Kennedy.  And we make them pay immediately when Maldonado works a walk to score the second run and then Uribe beats out an infield single to score the third.  The Cubs tie it in the 4th on a LaCoss wild pitch and then take the lead in the 7th when Don Robinson gives up a sac fly to Sandberg.  4-3 Cubs.  Fortunately, that lead goes away in the bottom half, Robby Thompson hits a 2 run homer off Les Lancaster - we go up 5-4, and that's the final  The Cubs threaten with two on and two out in the 8th, but Craig Lefferts comes on to put Lloyd McClendon away.  We're up 2-1, game 4 is tomorrow.

2000 NLDS we split the first two at home, it's Saturday afternoon at Shea, we lose a nearly 5 and a half hour 13 inning game to the Mets.  We were 4 outs away from this win, up 2-1 with 2 out in the bottom of the 8th when Robb Nen gave up a game tying double to Edgardo Alfonzo. We had a chance in the 10th, runners on the corners against Armando Benitez - but he got Felipe Crespo to fly out. The Mets left them loaded in the 11th, we had 2 on and 2 out in the 13th with Bonds at the plate in the biggest spot of the season - but Rick White popped him up - and then Benny Agbayani homered off Aaron Fultz to give the Mets the win.  We're a game away from elimination.

2002 NLDS Game 5 at Atlanta, we've got a showdown game, one team advances, one team is done, Russ Ortiz for the good guys, Kevin Millwood for the Braves. We draw first blood in the 2nd, Barry singles and Reggie Sanders drives him home. Barry gets them again two innings later with a homer and it's 2-0 Giants. Ortiz gets into real trouble in the 5th, bases loaded, two out, but he gets Chipper to ground out. An inning later a Mark DeRosa base hit off Aaron Fultz cuts our lead in half, but in the 7th a Kenny Lofton sac fly off Darren Holmes gets that run back and we're up 3-1 with 9 outs to get. Tim Worrell comes on in the bottom half, puts them on the corners, but strikes out Javy Lopez to end the inning.  They had one more threat - bottom of the 9th, a Jeff Kent error and Julio Franco base hit put runners on the corners with nobody out.  Who is coming to the plate? Gary Sheffield and Chipper Jones - but Robb Nen strikes out the former and gets a double play out of the latter.  We win.  Next up - the NLCS.

2010 NLDS Game 1 home vs. Braves 8 years after taking the Braves out in '02, we meet them again in the NLDS. Thursday night at what I still call the new ballpark, Tim Lincecum throws an all timer, complete game 2 hitter, 14 strikeouts, 1 walk.  We only got 5 hits ourselves, a Cody Ross 4th inning single off Derek Lowe drove in the game's only run. Lincecum retired the final 8 Braves and we open it up with a 1-0 win.

2012 NLDS Game 2 - the 2012 season ends here for all intents and purposes, we drop the first 2 at home in a best of 5 series to the Reds, Bumgarner gives up 4 earned and doesn't get out of the 5th, we're shut out by Bronson Arroyo 9-0. We got 2 hits, 1 walk - are just rolled clean out of this series.  We go to Cincinnati for Game 3.

2014 NLDS Game 4 home vs. Nationals -we lost out first chance to clinch the series, but not this one, Ryan Vogelsong and 4 relievers give up just 4 hits, but after Bryce Harper hit his second mammoth homer of the series against Hunter Strickland in the 7th, it was tied at 2.  We win it in the bottom half on a wild Aaron Barrett pitch the scored Joe Panik. Romo and Casilla didn't allow a hit in the final two innings and we're on to the NLCS.

2016 NLDS Game 1 - we head to Wrigley to play the prohibitive World Series favorites, the Cubs, and Johnny Cueto gives it all he has, 8 innings, 3 hits, 1 walk, 10 strikeouts.  The Cubs only got one run, an 8th inning Javier Baez homer.  That was a run more than we scored. We left runners in scoring position in the 2nd and 4th and even the 9th - but we did not score.  Game 2 tomorrow.

See you tomorrow.  Go Giants!
