Forever Giants:1976 San Francisco Giants Year 19 (94)

Tuesday, February 17, 2015

1975 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season.  The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

1976 71-91
C Dave Rader .05
1B Darrell Evans .3
2B Marty Perez .5
SS Chris Speier -.1
3B Ken Reitz -1.3
LF Gary Matthews 2.05 (11.65) Last season
CF Larry Herndon .75
RF Bobby Murcer 3.1
OF Gary Thomasson .9
2B Derrel Thomas -.05
1B Willie Montanez .6
CF Von Joshua -1.25
C Marc Hill -.05
CF Jack Clark .55
C Mike Sadek -.1
SS Johnnie LeMaster -.35
SP John Montefusco  6.4
SP Jim Barr 5.4
SP Ed Halicki 2.4
SP Rob Dressler -.75
SP John D’Acquisto  -.5
RP Randy Moffitt 2.85
RP Gary Lavelle 3.3
RP Mike Caldwell -1.2
RP Greg Minton -.4
RP Charlie Williams 1.25

-Bob Lurie buys the club from Horace Stoneham, preventing a move to Toronto; Montefusco no hits the Braves. The Giants have their third straight sub .500 pythag for the first time since the mid 40s; unsurprisingly, it's Rigney's last year, he'll be replaced by Joe Altobelli, who had a brief MLB career and then spent years coaching in the Orioles system.  Matthews gets moved.
