 Astros v. Braves

#23. 1936 World Champion New York Yankees v. #54. 1954 New York Yankees

Frankie Crosetti and Bill Dickey are in the lineup for the '36 club - and they're coaching with Casey 18 years later on the '54 club.  If the '36 team wins, they'll have home field advantage against the '19 Astros in the Regional Final -- if the '54 team wins, they will head to Houston.  Like the '19 Astros - the '54 Yankees are undefeated in the tournament.   We will see versions of these teams in Region 8 - the '38 Yankees and the '51 Yankees are in separate semi-finals still to come.  It's possible that every series left until the Elite 8 will include the Yankees.  At most, one will not.

GAME ONE

1st: Yankee Stadium is pulsating and that won't stop until the end of this series; Yogi, Dickey, Mantle, DiMaggio, Ford - it's like Monument Park come to life.  Winner advances to meet the 2019 Astros in the Region 7 Final.  Red Ruffing on the hill for 1936, 31 year old RH, 20-12.  3.85. After 7 seasons with the Red Sox, Ruffing became a Yankee six years ago.  This is his first of what will be 4 straight 20+ game winning seasons.  He'll be on the '46 Yankees with Yogi and Rizzuto, both of whom are in the other dugout today. Ruffing gets the first, then walks Mickey Mantle.  Yogi Berra singles and Irv Noren -- Irv Noren blasts a 3 run homer and just like that 1954 hangs 3 runs on the board.  Joe Collins walks, that's all.  1954 3 1936 0
1st: 1954 counters with Whitey Ford.  25 year old lefty. 16-8, 2.82. Ford broke in back in '50, missed two years for military service and returned last season. He made his first of what will be 10 All Star teams this year.  He played with DiMaggio - who he faces today.  Ford gets one, then issues back to back walks to Bill Dickey and Lou Gehrig. Ford gets the second - then Red Rolfe comes through with a base hit that scores a run.  1954 3 1936 1

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Frankie Crosetti singles.  A 43 year old Crosetti is on the coaching staff for the '54 team - he's opposing his 25 year old self in this series. Crosetti broke in back in '32 and then spends the rest of his 17 year career in pinstripes. It's Rizzuto who will replace Crosetti as the Yankee shortstop; Scooter's platooning in this series. Ford gets 2 - and then gives up a run scoring single to DiMaggio.  Dickey follows with a single - that's all.  1954 3 1936 2

3rd: Ruffing gets two and then Yogi singles again.  Yogi's 29, he broke in back in '46 and is a Yankee through '63.  Yogi's on the coaching staff for the '77 team which has already advanced. He won his second AL MVP this season. Joe McCarthy is managing the '36 team and he managed Yogi in his rookie season.  Dickey was on that roster; like Mantle arrived as DiMaggio was leaving, Yogi arrived as Dickey was leaving. Noren singles - that's all.
3rd: George Selkirk walks. The Yankee RF is 32, like Crosetti, like Ford, like DiMaggio, like Gehrig, like Rizzuto - he's a Yankee his entire career, '34-42. He made his first of what would be 2 All Star teams this season. That's all.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: After an out, DiMaggio doubles. The Yankee Clipper is 21, in his rookie season. He led the bigs in triples and finished 8th in the MVP. He plays until '51 - the rookie season for Mickey Mantle.  Ford gets the second and then Casey decides to give Gehrig the intentional pass - he pays for it - Selkirk doubles to score two and 1936 goes in front. Red Rolfe follows with a base hit to score another.  1954 3 1936 5

5th: Just 18 years separating these two squads; plenty of fans here today rooting for both clubs. Ruffing gets two then pitches around Mantle, 4 straight balls.  It works.
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Noren reaches on an error.  The Yankee LF is 29, this year was the only All Star team he'd ever make in an 11 year career. it's his 3rd season in NY after 3 in Washington. It's the best season he'll ever have. 2 outs later Gil McDougald walks and that's all.
6th: Lou Gehrig singles with 2 out. Gehrigs 33, broke in when he was 20 and his last year will be '39. Gehrig was the MVP this season; he led all MLB in runs, homers, walks, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+ and total bases.  Selkirk then reaches on an error and Ford loses Rolfe on a controversial call on a 3-2 pitch.  That's costly - Tony Lazzeri singles home 2 runs and ends Ford's day.  29 year old RH Tom Gorman had a 2.21 ERA, ends the inning.  1954 3 1936 7

7th: Enos Slaughter singles with one out, just the 4th hit for 1954. The 38 year old Slaughter is platooning in RF. He spent 13 seasons with the Cardinals before becoming a Yankee this year. He'll wind up spending parts of 6 seasons in New York.  Mantle blasts a double. Ruffing escapes though and is 6 outs away from handing 1954 their first loss of the tournament.
7th: DiMaggio singles with 2 outs, he's got 3 hits - that's all.

8th: Gil McDougald singles with 2 out.  The Yankee second baseman is 26, broke in in '51 and spends his entire 10 year career with New York.  Willy Miranda singles, that's all.
8th: The third 1954 pitcher is Allie Reynolds, 37 year old RH, 13 wins, 7 saves, 3.32. After 5 seasons in Cleveland, Reynolds arrived in New York in '47, so overlapped with some of his opponents today. This is his final season and he made his 5th All Star team. He walks Rolfe with 2 away and that's all.

9th: Ruffing stays on, looking to go the whole way today.  Slaughter singles. That's it.

GAME TWO

1st: Monte Pearson gets the ball for 1936, up 1 game to 0.  27 year old RH, 19-7, 3.71. It's his first season in NY after 4 in Cleveland.  He made his first of 2 All Star teams. He led MLB in H/9. Pearson gets one and then Mantle blasts an upper deck shot to RF - just a monster shot for the Mick to put '54 on the board.  Pearson gets the second out, Noren then doubles, Collins walks, Andy Carey walks to load the bases and then McDougald walks to score the second run.  1954 2 1936 0
1st: Bob Grim for 1954. 24 year old RH, 20-6, 3.26. Grim was Rookie of the Year and never wins more than 12 games in any other season. Bill Dickey singles, an out later DiMaggio singles and George Selkirk puts 1936 out in front with a 3 run homer.  Will we see a real slugfest today? Rolfe singles, that's all.  1954 2 1936 3

2nd: Mantle singles with 2 away - and he comes all the way around to score on a Berra triple.  Mantle's 22, already in his 4th season. He made his 3rd All Star team, led MLB in runs scored - he's a Yankee all the way through 1968. Noren singles home Yogi and '54 is back on top.  Slug-fest.  1954 4 1936 3
2nd: Dickey reaches on a 2 out error and Gehrig walks, that's all.

3rd: McDougald doubles with one away, that's it.
3rd: Selkirk walks, Rolfe and Lazzeri reach on back to back errors that scores a run. Grim hits Crosetti (wonder what the older Crosetti sitting in Grims own dugout thinks about that) and '36 scores again on a Roy Johnson groundout to retake the lead.  1954 4 1936 5

4th: Noren walks with 2 out, that's it.
4th: 1-2-3

5th: Andy Carey singles. Carey's 22, in his 3rd season. He'll be a Yankee the rest of the decade. That's all Pearson allows.
5th: Selkirk walks and Rolfe singles.  Rolfe's 27, broke in back in '31 and will spend his entire 10 season career in New York. He led MLB in triples this year. Grim gets one - then Crosetti and Johnson each have run scoring singles to extend the lead for '36. 1954 4 1936 7

6th: Moose Skowron comes on to hit for Grim, we'll see him start at first base in game 3. Skowron's 23, he's a rookie and will be in pinstripes until '63. Pearson walks Slaughter and there's that man again - Mickey Mantle just blasts one - this time to left center - a 500 foot home run easily - the 22 year old Yankee CF has hit 2 homers today and this game is tied.  Slug. Fest.  That sends McCarthy to the pen for Pat Malone, 33 year old RH, 12 wins, 9 saves, 3.81. He gets 2 and then Collins singles. That's all.  1954 7 1936 7
6th: Tom Gorman comes on for the second straight game for 1954 as the game belongs to the bullpens now.  He gets one and then DiMaggio doubles. Selkirk singles and there are men on the corners. Red Rolfe doubles everyone home and one more time - 1936 has the lead. Tony Lazzeri walks. That's all. 1954 7 1936 9

7th: Hank Bauer will be in the game 3 lineup against a lefty starter - right now he comes off the bench with a 2 out single. That's all.
7th: Allie Reynolds again for 1954 - Malone stays in to hit and he singles. Reynolds walks Dickey and Gehrig back to back and he's in the jackpot now - bases loaded, nobody out, 1936 threatening to end this one right here.  And Joe DiMaggio lines a grand slam home run just inside the right field foul pole!  Mantle has 2 homers today -- DiMaggio is now a triple from the cycle and has just hit a grand slam against his future teammate Reynolds that almost certainly puts the game out of reach.  Lazzeri singles two outs later, thats enough. 1954 7 1936 13

8th: Mantle walks on 4 straight, 2 outs later Noren walks - that brings in Johnny Murphy, 27 year old RH, 9 wins, 3.38 -- Murphy's a year away from starting a run of 3 straight All Star appearances.  He ends it.
8th: 1-2-3

9th: 1-2-3, Murphy retires all 5 hitters he faces to end the game.

GAME THREE

1st: Waiting for the winner of this series is the 2019 Astros; 29 year old RH Harry Byrd looks to make them wait another day.  9-7, 2.99. Byrd was Rookie of the Year for the A's two year sago; this is his only season as a Yankee. He's out of the league after '57. 1-2-3
1st: The 27 year old Lefty Gomez looks to complete the sweep for 1936. 13-7, 4.39. Gomez came up in '30 and spends all but the final season of a 14 year career in New York.  He made the 4th of 7 straight All Star teams this year. He walks Mantle.  That's it.

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Andy Carey singles with one out. Bob Cerv is in the lineup today and he reaches on an error.  Cerv is 29, played in 56 games with the Yankees this year, that's his highest game total in 6 Yankees seasons (he'll come back and get 3 more years in New York, one of which had 80+ games). After the second out - it's Phil Rizzuto - in the lineup for the first time in the series - he doubles everyone home.  1936 0 1954 2

3rd: Frankie Crosetti singles. 2 outs later Bill Dickey reaches on an error.  Like Yogi, Dickey is 29. Broke in in '28 and will spend his full 17 years in pinstripes.  This year he made his 3rd All Star team and finished 5th in the MVP. Gehrig then singles, scoring Crosetti.  1936 1 1954 2
3rd: Mantle walks again. That's all.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: 1-2-3

5th: Jake Powell gets his first start today and he singles with 1 out. An out later Dickey walks, that's it.  Harry Byrd with the strong outing.
5th: Mantle doubles - he's reached 3 times today, 10 times on the series. Skowron walks, that's all.

6th: DiMaggio rips a base hit.  But that's it.
6th: Hank Bauer got his first start today; he singles. Bauer's 31, his 7th season in New York, he made his third and final All Star team this year. Andy Carey reaches on an error and Bob Cerv doubles everyone home - that gives 1954 a little breathing room. McDougald walks, Gomez gets two -- but he just can't get Mantle out, no one can get Mantle out in this series, he singles home a run. 1936 1 1954 5

7th: Crosetti singles. That's it.
7th: Pat Malone comes on for 1936, Bauer and Carey hit back to back one out triples - we are going to see a game 4. 1936 1 1954 6

8th: Tom Gorman comes on for 1954, Gehrig singles. 2 outs follow and Rolfe walks. That's all.
8th: After two outs Mantle singles again.  Skowron singles. Yogi and Bauer hit back to back run scoring singles - this one is done, we will see you for Game 4.  1936 1 1954 8

GAME FOUR

1st: Harry Byrd kept 1954 alive in Game 3 and now Whitey Ford gets his second shot at 1936. 1-2-3
1st: Red Ruffing threw a complete game in beating 1954 in Game 1 - if he does it again this series is over  Yogi laces a one out double down the rightfield line.  He's left stranded.

2nd: Red Rolfe singles to right with one away. Rolfe has now reached 9 times, leading the way for '36.  That's all.
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: DiMaggio doubles with 2 out.  It's Joe D's 3rd double of the series.  That's all.
3rd: Phil Rizzuto singles; Scooter earned a start even against a RH pitcher - Casey deciding to give his shortstop the chance here, despite a dreadful year with the bat, Rizzuto hit .195 in 1954. Whitey moves him over to second -- and Mantle rips a run scoring single to put '54 on the board.  Mantle has now reached 13 times, easily leading both squads.  1936 0 1954 1

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Also getting the start against a RH today is Hank Bauer - and he bombs a one out homer to give '54 another run.  1936 0 1954 2

5th: Crosetti draws a one out walk - but that's it.  Can 1954 tie this series?
5th: Ford walks with one away and that's all.  Tight game.

6th: DiMaggio hits Ford's first pitch over the wall in left center to halve the deficit.  That's DiMaggio's second homer of the series. Dickey singles.  Gehrig walks.  Tying run in scoring position and nobody out.  But Ford holds firm.  1936 1 1954 2
6th: Irv Noren singles -- but that's all.  We head to the 7th, tight, well pitched game 4.

7th: 1-2-3
7th: McDougald walks with one away. That's all for '54

8th: Whitey Ford's day has ended, great outing, 4 hits, just the one run, he leaves with the lead.  Tom Gorman takes the ball for '54.  Can the pen find the last 6 outs? 1-2-3
8th: Pat Malone enters for '36, trying to hold this deficit to 1.  Mantle reaches on an error and goes all the way to third on a Yogi single.  A Noren sac fly scores a run - is that the insurance?  Are we headed to game 5? An out later Collins and Bauer hit back to back singles - but just the one run crossed.  1936 1 1954 3

9th: Johnny Sain takes the ball for '54. 36 year old RH, 3.16, 26 saves. This is Sain's 3rd year in NY after 7 with the Braves.  Sain led MLB in saves.

Gehrig flies to left.
Selkirk homers to left center!  George Selkirk hits his second homer of the series and it cuts the deficit to a run.
And then Rolfe homers to right!  Back to Back 1936 Home Runs Tie This Game!

Sain gets the next two - but now we head to the bottom of the 9th.  1936 3 1954 3
9th: Malone gets 2 - Casey decides to leave Sain in to hit for himself - which makes sense, dude hit .353 this year - and he singles.  That brings Mantle to the plate.  Winning run on first.

Mantle singles.  Two on.  Two out.  Yogi to the plate.
He pops to second and we head to the 10th.

10th: Sain gave up those 2 home runs in the 9th but he is back on now.  He gets 1, then gives up a pinch single to Jake Powell. Sain gets the next two. Bottom of the 10th.
10th: 29 year old RH Jumbo Brown gets the ball for 1936. 5.91 ERA and that's a lot. 1-2-3

11th: 11th inning.  Game 4.  Will we see a Game 5? Allie Reynolds takes the ball for 1954. He gets 1, then walks Selkirk.  He gets the second, then walks Lazzeri.  Go ahead run in scoring position -- it does not score.
11th: The new 1936 pitcher is 37 year old lefty Ted Kleinhans who has a 5.83 ERA and that's a lot.  1-2-3

12th: Helluva game here in the Bronx.  Reynolds gets the first - Roy Johnson then pinch singles - but that's all for '36.
12th: Johnny Murphy comes on for 1936, he gets two and then walks Yogi.  That's it.

13th: We've had some 13 inning games in the tournament, maybe one was longer but I'm not sure.  23 year old lefty Bob Wiesler pitched just 30 innings this year, 4.15 ERA. He gets one, then Selkirk singles - he gets the second then Lazzeri walks.  Go ahead run in scoring position for 1936 -- nope.
13th: Murphy remains for 1936, he gets one, and then Hank Bauer doubles.  Winning run standing in scoring position.  Murphy gets the second and then Joe McCarthy calls on the intentional walk to McDougald to get the force play.  2 on, 2 out -- AND PHIL RIZZUTO LINES A SINGLE TO CENTER -- BEN CHAPMAN COMES UP CLEAN - BAUER RACING HOME -- THE THROW.....

SAFE.

Jubilation for 1954 -- Phil Rizzuto has been benched throughout the tournament for this 1954 club, barely seeing action - he got the start on a Stengel hunch today - and in the bottom of the 13th inning Scooter comes through with a base hit that sends this series to a Game 5.

GAME FIVE

1st: So many years of Yankee history in this series - Hall of Famers, all time legends, and then just man after man after man who helped create the greatest dynasty in all of professional sports. Fitting that this series has gone the full five games.  Monte Pearson gets the start for 1936.  He walks Moose Skowron with 2 away and that's it.
1st: Bob Grim for 1954 --who will win this tremendous Yankee on Yankee battle and go face the 2019 Astros in the Region 7 Final?  1-2-3

2nd: Andy Carey doubles.  Carey was 0-6 in game 4 but doubles here to lead off the 2nd. Pearson gets 2 and then pitches around Rizzuto to get to Grim, who hit .143 this year.  That's a mistake - Grim singles to score a run.  And then a wild pitch scores a second.  1954 2 1936 0
2nd: George Selkirk homered in the 9th to breathe life into 1936 in game four and he doubles here.  But that's all.

3rd: Hank Bauer doubles with 2 out - Bauer doubled in the 13th in game 4 and scored the winning run.  That's it.
3rd: Crosetti and Johnson walk back to back. But nothing results.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: 1-2-3

5th: Mantle singles with 1 out.  He's reached 15 times.  After the second out Skowron walks - and that's it.
5th: 1-2-3, 9 straight set down by Bob Grim and he keeps the shutout.

6th: Carey walks.  An out later Gene Woodling walks, it's his first start in the series - Casey deciding to go with his guys in this deciding game 5.  And here's Rizzuto again - lining a base hit that scores a run.  1954 is up 3-0.  1954 - are they about to come back from a 2 games to 0 deficit to win this semi-final?  1954 3 1936 0
6th: Grim has allowed just one hit as we go to the 6th, the Selkirk double back in the second.  He walks the pitcher Pearson and then Bill Dickey singles.  That means Gehrig and DiMaggio are coming to the plate with 2 on and nobody out.  If 1936 is coming back it might need to be right here.  Gehrig walks.  Based loaded and nobody out for DiMaggio who already has a grand slam in this series - no one in this stadium - no one in New York City is sitting down right now.

Grim strikes DiMaggio out.
And then gets the next two.  Grim escapes a bases loaded nobody out spot - 1954 keeps that 3-0 lead and we go to the 7th.

7th: Mantle walks.  Berra walks.  Moose Skowron singles - that's the 4th run - and 1954 can feel it now - 1954 can feel it now.  Bauer doubles - everybody scores!  Get ready to travel to Houston.  Get ready to travel to 2019.  Johnny Murphy comes on for 1936, he gets through it but it's late now.  1954 6 1936 0
7th: Grim is done, Casey goes to the pen.  34 year old lefty Tommy Byrne enters, 2.70, it's Stengel's top lefty in the pen.  Tony Lazzeri greets him with a first pitch homer to left center.  An out later Johnson walks, Tom Gorman comes on now for 1954 - will Casey look to get 8 outs from him today? He gets 2 and ends the threat.  1954 6 1936 1

8th: Mantle walks again, with 2 out.  Yogi reaches on an error and Skowron walks to load the bases.  Hank Bauer triples everyone home!  Bauer had a 2 run double in the 7th -- here's a 3 run triple in the 8th!  Hank Bauer did not get the start back in game 2, sitting against a RH - but Casey decided to go with his guys in games 4 and 5 and Hank Bauer has come through again and again.  Ted Kleinhans comes on and finishes the inning.  1954 9 1936 1
8th: Gehrig singles.  2 outs later Rolfe singles.  That's it.

9th: Woodling singles with 1 out. Rizzuto walks and Pat Malone comes on for McCarthy - he gets out of it.
9th: Jim McDonald sees his first action of this tournament; 27 year old RH, 3.17. 1-2-3

5 RBI for Hank Bauer in Game 5 -- 1954 comes all the way back after dropping the first two games to win this Regional Semi-Final.  A sedate celebration for the players on both sides - they're all Yankees at day's end - the older versions of Crosetti and Dickey look to pass along some advice to their younger selves. Dickey congratulates Berra.  DiMaggio congratulates Mantle.  Yankees all, here in the Bronx.

Mantle 17x/ 2 double, 2HR, 4 game 2 RBI, 3 runs
Berra 8x/triple, double
McDougald 7x/double
Bauer 7x/HR, 3 doubles, triple 5 game 5 RBI

Mantle an on base machine in the series - and Bauer really wins games 4 and 5, they are co-MVPs.
