What is this all about?

Here are the top 5 May 9 moments in San Francisco Giants history.

1983 home vs Cardinals, the Giants are down 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth when Darrell Evans ties the score with a double off of Bruce Sutter.  We win the game 5-4. This was Sutter's worst season to date, he dropped 40 points of ERA+ and then finished 6th in the MVP vote the following season.  It was Evans best (and last) year as a Giant, he was a 5 win player in '83.

Walk off 1985 vs Cubs, 10+ scoreless innings at the Stick (Hammaker vs. future Giant Scott Sanderson) but in the bottom of the 11th Manny Trillo singled home Rob Deer off of Warren Brusstar for the 1-0 walkoff.  Trillo was on the back side of his 17 year big league career when he became the Giants second baseman in '84, he still had a + glove in '85 but with a 66 OPS+ just killed you with the bat.  We dealt him to the Cubs in the offseason for someone named Dave Owen who never made our club.

1987 at Pittsburgh, the Giants came in 20-10 but trailed 4-3 in the 5th when Chris Speier hit a grand slam off of Logan Easley.  It was the 102nd homer of his career, he'd only hit 10 more.  How many grand slams do you think Chris Speier hit?  The answer is 4.  One in 1972.  One in 1988, This one - and one four days before this one.  Chris Speier hit 4 grand slams in a 18 year career and two were in the same week in '87.

1994 home vs Rockies, how about another grand slam?  This one hit by Barry Bonds off of Armando Reynoso with the Giants trailing 1-0 in the third inning.  We'd win the game 12-5.  Barry was a 6 and a half win player in '94, only his 12th best San Francisco season.  This was career homer #230 and his 4th career grand slam.

2010 at Mets, New York had walked us off the previous two games in the series and was looking for a sweep here, they led 5-4 in the 8th when Aaron Rowand hit a two run homer off of Jenrry Mejia and that wound up being the game winner.  Rowand was a 5 win player for the Phillies in '07, we gave him a big free agent deal in the offseason and he fell off the table, each of his four Giants years worse than the previous.

See you tomorrow.  Go Giants!
