7 Rams teams have moved forward - the '70 Team is seeded 11th in the region, 2nd in defense and 4th in offense.  The All Pro on defense is 30 year old Merlin Olsen, he and 32 year old Deacon Jones look to get to Staubach -- battle of the defensive lines in this game. 30 year old Roman Gabriel had 17 scores and 12 picks. 29 year old Bob Brown is an All Pro.

Likely a conservative, hard hitting 1970s style game - two smart, talented, All Time defensive lines looking to get after it.  Let's go to Dallas for the kick.

1st Qtr
Alvin Haywood returnd the opening kick to the 40, good field position for LA.

2 first downs on the drive, the biggest play a 15 yard Roman Gabriel to Pat Studstill connection - but the drive ends in a Rams failure to convert a 4th down and Dallas takes over at their own 34.

3 and out.  Rams at their own 35.

3 and out.  Dallas at their own 29.

3 and out.  Rams at their own 33.  One first down on the drive, a Les Josephson 10 yard reception. The drive ends in a punt, touchback.  90 seconds left in the quarter.

3 and out, a Deacon Jones sack ending the drive - Dallas has 4th down from their own 15 as the quarter ends.

2nd Qtr: Cowboys 0 Rams 0
Dallas doesn't get a first down and they'll be kicking from their own 15.

Rams in buisness at the Dallas 46.

2 first downs on the drive - Jack Snow 19 yard reception the biggest play - but Too Tall Jones gets a big sack - LA settles for the FG and it's 3-0.

Dallas at the 22.

1/10 - 1 for Tony Dorsett.
2/9 - Roger Staubach finds Drew Pearson for a 21 yard pickup and Dallas's first first down of the game comes with 10 minutes left in the half.
1/10 - 4 yards for Robert Newhouse.
2/6 - Newhouse is stopped for no gain.
3/7 - Staubach again - this time its 14 yards to Golden Richards and Dallas is at the 39.
1/10 - 6 for Dorsett.
2/4 - Newhouse gets 5 and it is a first down for the Cowboys.
1/10 - 5 for Dorsett, Dallas at the 23.
2/5 - Staubach to Butch Johnson, 13 yards and Dallas has a first down at the 10.
1/goal - A yard for Dorsett
2/goal - Newhouse gets a yard.
3/goal - Staubach rifles one to the back of the endzone -- TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS - 8 yards from Staubach to Drew Pearson and Dallas takes the 7-3 lead.

At the 2 minute warning, Rams at the 25.

They get a big first down, Larry Smith rumbling for 33 yards - but on 4th and short from the Cowboy 38 Gabriel's sacked by Randy White and Dallas takes over at the 43 with a tick more than a minute left in the half and all 3 timeouts.

1/10 - Staubach goes downfield to Richards, picture perfect pass, 26 yards and Dallas stops the clock.
1/10 - 11 yards from Staubach to Billy Joe Dupree, Dallas uses its second timeout, they are at the 20 yard line with 54 seconds left in the half.
1/10 - Newhouse gets 3 yards on the sweep, he's out of bounds.
2/7 - Staubach to Drew Pearson, 14 yard pickup all the way to the Ram 3 yard line, Dallas uses its final timeout, there's 37 seconds left to go in the half.
1/goal - Staubach gets sacked - Merlin Olsen - and the clock is running and Dallas can't stop it -- that's the thing Dallas couldn't do - take that sack, Staubach has to hurry.
2/goal - Staubach - End Zone -- Tony Hill --- TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS -- Dallas ends the half with 2 scores.

Third Qtr: Cowboys 14 Rams 3
It took Dallas a quarter and a half, but they find an offensive rhythm, Staubach with a couple of scores and Dallas is up double digits.

Dallas at the 20.

1/10 - Newhouse goes for 10 yards.
1/10 - Dorsett for 5.
2/5 - Staubach hits Dorsett in space, 18 yard pickup for the rookie -- Dallas picks up where they left off.
1/10 - 3 for Newhouse
2/7 - Staubach in the flat to Dorsett, he scoots for the first down at the LA 37.

The drive stalls - Herrera hits the FG and it is 17-3.

LA at the 32.

3 and out.  Dallas at the 36.

They get a first down on a 12 yard Dorsett run, but punt, Rams at the 12.

They get a first down on an 11 yard Willie Ellison run - but Cliff Harris picks off Gabriel - and Dallas has the ball at the LA 29 yard line, already up 2 scores, couple of minutes left in the third.  Dallas looking to close this one out.

1/10 - 7 for Newhouse
2/3 - Dorsett stopped at the line.
3/4 - Newhouse breaks one -- Robert Newhouse knocked out of bounds at the LA 6 yard line, Dallas with a first and goal.
1/goal - Dorsett for 3 as the qtr ends.

4th Qtr: Cowboys 17 Rams 3
Dallas is in great shape now, up 2 scores with a second and goal.

2/goal - Newhouse gets one more.
3/goal - Preston Pearson....Into the End Zone....TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS and at 24-3 this hill seems too step for the Rams to climb.

LA at the 32.

1/10 - Les Josephson gets 1
2/9 - Gabriel to Studstill for 18 yards to the Cowboy 49.
1/10 - Smith for 1
2/9 - Incomplete
3/9 - Gabriel 14 yards to Josephson, Rams at the 34.
1/10 - Ellison 16 yard gain.
1/10 - Tommy Mason gets 2.
2/8 - Gabriel hits Ellison - he's all the way down to the Dallas 2 yard line.
1/goal - Smith is stopped just shy of the end zone.
2/goal - Josephson is into the end zone -- but a holding call nullfies it - and LA is at the 11.
3/goal - Harvey Martin sacks Gabriel -- LA is all the way backed up at the 18 - down 21 points with less than 10 minutes to play in the football game.
4/goal - Incomplete

Dallas takes over on downs and that's it - theyre at the 25, up 3 scores.

They get a first down on a 13 yard Drew Pearson reception - but the drive ends in a pick - Clancy Williams intercepting Staubach - LA has the ball with a tick more than 6 to play at the Cowboy 44.

They get a first down, 11 yard Snow reception - but Harvey Martin's second sack ends the drive and again, Dallas takes over on downs.  5 minutes left in the game.

They stay on the ground, Dorsett 10 yard run gets a first down, but with a little over 2 left, they punt, LA ball at their own 17.

The rest of the game is LA moving down the field - a 20 yard pass from Gabriel to Truax the biggest play, Randy White gets his second sack - and when Dallas again stops LA on a 4th down, the game is over.

Final: Cowboys 24 Rams 3
Doomsday really asserts itself in the second half - Dallas moves its 10th team into Rnd 2 where they face the Patriots 10th team.  Only San Francisco has had more success.

The '10 Ravens split in the regular season with the Steelers, but like their '08 predecessors, they lost to Pittsburgh in the playoffs.  Just a great hard hitting rivarly, Baltimore's got the 3rd best defense in '08, this might be a really low scoring, tight game. 2 All Pros on defense (and a third, the punter, 30 year old Billy Cundiff) 26 year old Haloti Ngata, who had 5.5 sacks, 32 year old Ed Reed, who had 8 picks. 28 year old Terrell Suggs had 11 sacks.

It's a 4/13 game, but anything other than a tight rock fight would be a surprise.  Lets go to Pittsburgh for the kick.

1st Qtr
Ravens at the 28

Baltimore gets a first down when Joe Flacco hits Anquan Boldin for a 23 yard gain, but the drive ends in a punt.

Steelers at the 13.

1/10 - Ben Roethlisberger swing pass to Mewelde Moore, 10 yards.
1/10 - Incomplete
2/9 - Willie Parker gets 1
3/9 - Ben to Heath Miller, rumbles downfield for 15 yards to the 39.
1/10 - Moore gets a first down with a run to midfield.
1/10 - 2 for Moore.
2/8 - Ben to Hines Ward - a dozen yards and a first down to the Raven 36.

That's the end of the drive - and when the Steelers - Miss - a FG - Baltimore takes over at their own 36.

1/10 - 5 yards for Ray Rice.
2/5 - Flacco to Rice, 2 yards.
3/3 - Flacco to Derrick Mason, 21 yards to the Steeler 341.
1/10 - Rice gets 4.
2/6 - Flacco to Houshmandzadeh, a dozen yards to the 25.
1/10 - A dozen yards for  Ray Rice and Baltimore is at the 13.

That ends the drive, LaMarr Woodley gets a sack - Baltimore hits the FG and it's 3-0.

Steelers at the 37.

1/10 - Incomplete and a false start on the next play backs them up 5.
2/15 - Roethlisberger picks it up, 15 yards to Hines Ward.
1/10 - Ben gers dropped by Terrell Suggs.
2/15 - Willie Parker hit in the backfield, the Steelers have third and long as the qtr ends.

2nd Qtr: Ravens 3 Steelers 0
Rivalry game, Pittsburgh got the better of their real life games in both seasons, Baltimore up early here.  Third and 18 for Pittsburgh.

Ben picks it up -- 23 yard pass to Limas Sweed, the Steelers are at the Baltimore 36.

1/10 - Ben finds Santonio Holmes -- he gets a step -- But Is Then Stripped by Ed Reed -- it's a fumble - a fumble -- the Ravens take over at their own 27.

One first down - 15 yard Mason reception; James Harrison will get a sack and the drive ends in a punt.

Steelers at the 33 - it's a 3 and out with a Ray Lewis sack puntuating the defensive effort - still 3-0, this is the game we expected.

Ravens at the 35.  3 and out

Steelers at the 26.  3 and out.

Ravens at the 44.  3 and out.  It is the game we expected.

Steelers at the 18.  3 and out.  Baltimore takes the ball at their own 43, less than 3 minutes to go in the first half, it remains 3-0 Ravens.

They get 1 first down, it's a big one, 28 yard reception for Houshmanzadeh - that's enough to get Cundiff in position to hit a FG and it is 6-0 with a little more than a minute left.

Steelers at the 16.

1/10 - Willie Parker for 11.
1/10 - Willie Parker gains 25 yards - it looked like Pittsburgh might be content to run out the clock, but now, they are at the Baltimore 48 yard line and they uuse a timeout with 53 seconds left in the half.
1/10 - Ben quick out to Ward, 7 yards and out of bounds.
2/3 - Incomplete
3/3 - Ben picks it up, 19 yard gain to Moore, that's a first down at the Ravens 22 yard line with 34 seconds left, Steelers use their second timeout.

The don't move further - the half ends with the FG.

3rd Qtr: Ravens 6 Steelers 3
Each team with two sacks, Baltimore has picked up a turnover - this game sure looks like if anyone scores a TD that might be enough.

Steelers at the 19.

1/10 - 4 yards for Moore
2/6 - Parker gets one.
3/7 - Ben is levled by Haloti Ngata -- it's a strip sack -- the Ravens recover at the 9 yard line!  Big, big play - Nagata strip sack, Baltimore has a first and goal to go at the 9!

But again, they cant get the ball in the end zone -- Cundiff's third FG makes it 9-3.

Steelers at the 28.

1/10 Ben to Ward, 7 yards.
2/3 - Moore picks it up.
1/10 - A big play -- Willie Parker goes for 43 - Parker breaks one agains this Ravens defense and the Steelers are at the 19!
1/10 - Gary Russell gets a carry, nothing.
2/10 - Parker goes for 5.
3/5 - Parker -- Willie Parker is through the hole -- Willie Parker is Gonna Go Into the End Zone -- TOUCHDOWN STEELERS - 14 yard TD run for Willie Parker - and the Steelers go in front, 10-9.

Ravens at the 27.

3 and out.  Steelers at the 17.

3 and out.  Ravens at the 42.

3 and out.  Steelers at the 26.  They get a first down on a 16 yard Willie Parker run, big third qtr for Parker - but at the end of the qtr - the Steelers have a 4th down at midfield.

4th Qtr: Steelers 10 Ravens 9
Willie Parker's big run allows the Steelers the lead. Steelers punt to the 24.

One first down, Flacco 17 yards to Boldin.  But that is all - and the Steelers get the ball back at their own 17 with 11 minutes left and a 1 pt lead.

They get 2 first downs and burn 4+ minutes off the clock. 12 yards from Ben to Holmes, 30 big yards from Ben to Nate Washington.  But - it ends - the Steelers punt leaves the Ravens deep in their own end, at the 6 with 6 and a half to go.

3 and out.  That won't help at all -- and now the Steelers have the ball at the Baltimore 39, 5 minutes to play, up a point.

They get a first down on a 16 yard Parker run, but Terrell Suggs gets his second sack, it leaves the Steelers with a Jeff Reed FG, it's 13-9 Steelers - Baltimore now with just 2 and a half minutes to go, at their own 32 and needing a TD.

4 plays net a total of 2 yards - the Ravens turn it over on downs, Pittsburgh gets the ball back at the Baltimore 34 just before the 2 minute warning - the Steelers get one first down, on an 18 yard Parker run - they burn all the Ravens timeouts and with 49 seconds left kick another FG, it's now 16-9 - Baltimore gets the ball back with 40 seconds to play, no timeouts, at their own 31 yard line - needing to drive 69 yards to send this game into OT -- but on the first play Troy Polamalu Intercepts Flacco -- and that is going to wrap this up.

Final: Steelers 16 Ravens 9
The Steeler defense just doesn't allow much at all today, Pittsburgh heads to round 2 and they'll host the '02 Eagles.

It's the second of the Giants 4 Super Bowl Champs (we'll see the other two in region 16; every Super Bowl Champ is at least in a play in game, including this team, 10 are still to come, they are flooding the last two rounds).  The '90 Giants knocked out the '90 Niners in the NFC Title game - and the '85 Niners fell to the eventual Super Bowl Champs - the '85 Giants, in the playoffs.  Top defense in football - 26 year old Pepper Johnson is an All Pro, 31 year old LT had 10.5 sacks (Sean Landetta's 28, he was also an All Pro).  There's a decision to make at QB, it was 29 year old Jeff Hostetler who was the winning QB in the Super Bowl - but he'll start on the bench, 35 year old Phil Simms had a solid season pre-injury, in 14 starts he had 16 scores and 4 picks. 33 year old Ottis Anderson ran for 11 TDs in 11 starts.

The Niners stand alone with 10 teams currently headed to round 2 - if they win this one, they'll make it 11.  2nd in defense, 5th in offense. 26 year old Eric Wright is an All Pro, 26 year old Ronnie Lott had 6 picks.  21.5 combined sacks for 27 year old Jeff Stover, 29 year old Dwaine Board.  30 TDs and 13 picks for 29 year old Joe Montana. 25 year old Roger Craig had over 2000 yards from scrimmage and scored 15 times. 10 TDs for 28 year old Dwight Clark.

We get Walsh vs Parcells/Belichick - the Niners trying to get a little bit of payback for both the 1990 and 1985 squads - couple of top defenses going at it in this one, lets head to the Meadowlands for the kick.

1st Qtr
Niners start at the 25.

1/10 - Joe Montana quick strike to the rookie, Jerry Rice, for 12.
1/10 - Wendell Tyler buried in the backfield.
2/13 - Montana to Dwight Clark - 3 yards.
3/10 - Montana finds Roger Craig in space - Craig's got a step -- that's a 16 yard pickup and the Niners cross midfield.

The drive ends here - and Dave Meggett returns the punt back to the 47.  Giants in good shape.

1/10 - 3 yards for Ottis Anderson.
2/7 - Anderson is stopped at the line.
3/8 - Phil Simms hits Mark Bavaro, sits down at the sticks, the Giants are at the Niner 44.
1/10 - A yard for Maurice Carthon.
2/9 - Ottis Anderson gets 4 - false start takes them back 5.
3/10 - Phil Simms finds Mark Ingram - 15 big yards it is a first down at the 29 yard line.

The drive ends - Michael Carter busts through the line and sacks Simms - Bahr FG puts the Giants on the board.

Niners at the 25 - they'll get a first down on a 16 yard Roger Craig gallup, but the drive ends - Giants at the 20.  2 plays net 2 yards and the quarter ends.

2nd Qtr: Giants 3 Niners 0
The Giants had the top defense in 1990, San Francisco the number 2 defense in 1985, we may see a rock fight here.

They don't pick it up - Niners take over at the 43; two plays later, Montana gets Picked Off by Pepper Johnson -- Johnson runs it back to the Niner 42 and New York is in business with a first down.

1/10 - 13 yards for Dave Meggett - Meggett scampers to the 29.  Fred Dean sacks Simms - Bahr hits another FG and it is 6-0.  This feels a lot like the 1990 NFC Championship.

Niners at the 29.

3 and out.  Giants up 6-0 and starting at their own 40, another good Meggett return.

3 and out.  Niners at the 23.

1/10 - A yard for Tyler.
2/9 - Montana 5 yards to Craig.
3/4 - Montana forced to run - he picks up 6 yards to the 35.
1/10 - Wendell Tyler busts one.  44 huge yards - plus a 5 yard bump on a facemask and the Niners are down to the Giants 16 yard line.  Wendell Tyler finds a seam and goes for 44 yards, the Niners are in business.
1/10 - Craig gets a yard.
2/9 - Craig stopped at the line.
3/9 - Montana knifes in a ball to Rice, he's got a first down.
1/goal - Nothing for Tyler
2/goal - Montana -- Montana fires -- Russ Francis --- TOUCHDOWN 49ERS - Joe Montana 6 yard bullet to Russ Francis - we are at the 2 minute mark and the 49ers have taken the 7-6 lead.

Giants deep in their own end at the 9.

1/10 - Simms to Bavaro - fights for 12 yards.
1/10 - Simms to Howard Cross, he goes for 13, the Giants stop the clock with 1:42 to go in the half at their own 34.
1/10 - Simms to Mark Ingram - 16 yards, right on the sideline, he goes out of bounds at midfield,  1:15 left in the half.
1/10 - Simms just flinging it on this drive - 22 yards to Stephen Baker - New York stops the clock with a little more than a minute left at the Niner 28 yard line.

But -- that's where the drive dies - at the end of the half, Bahr hits his 3rd FG and it is 9-7.

3rd Qtr: Giants 9 49ers 7
This game feels like a battle between these two teams, tough, taut - physical - the 3 Bahr FGs tell this story.

Dave Meggett is really doing it today - takes the kick back to the 49er 40 yard line.

But -- there is no drive -- and Matt Bahr hits his 4th FG of the day to give New York the 12-7 lead.

Niners at the 34 - 3 and out, Leonard Marshall with the sack - after the punt, NY will take over at the 49er 37, Dave Meggett continues to put pressure on San Francisco.

3 and out -- and when Bahr....Misses....a 50 yard FG - the Niners regain possession at their own 40.

3 and out.  New York's defense really controlling the line of scrimmage now.

Giants starting at the 19.  3 and out.  Niners at the 29.

3 and out including a vicious LT sack of Montana.  With a minute left in the quarter, the Giants have the ball at midfield.

2 plays net 5 yards and it's 3rd and 5 at the San Francisco 45 when the quarter ends.

4th Qtr: Giants 12 49ers 7
Doesn't feel like it should be this close - the Niners didn't get a first down in the quarter, the game has almost entirely been played on the 49er side of the field - New York unable to find the end zone.  3rd and 5.

They pick it up on an Ingram reverse, 13 yards to the Niner 32 -- but a Dwaine Board sack ends the drive, knocking New York out of FG range - after the punt, it's San Francisco ball at their own 12, 13 minutes left in the game.

1/10 - Montana to Tyler, 10 yards.
1/10 - Incomplete
2/10 - Roger Craig goes for 10 yards, Niners at the 32.
1/10 - Montana dumps to Francis, 3 yards.
2/7 - Incomplete
3/7 - Montana finds Clark, toe taps the sideline and he's got the first down at the Niner 43.
1/10 - Tyler gains 6
2/4 - Roger Craig goes for 11 yards and the 49ers are now at the Giants 40 yard line, 8 and a half minutes left.

But -- the drive ends with Lawrence Taylor's second sack - great Runager punt, with 6 and a half left, the Giants are at their own 10.

New York up 5, at their own 10.  6 and a half to play.

1/10 - Rodney Hampton gets nothing.
2/10 - Incomplete
3/10 - Simms - Looking for --- Picked Off By Eric Wright!  Picked Off by Eric Wright!  Wright is down at the New York 17 yard line!  Eric Wright intercepts Phil Simms and with 5 and a half minutes to go the 49ers are at the New York 17 yard line!

1/10 - Wendell Tyler bursts through to the 5 yard line!  First and goal for San Francisco at the 5 yard line!
1/goal - Tyler again -- Wendell Tyler Goes Into the End Zone --- TOUCHDOWN 49ERS - San Francisco has the lead -- and when Montana finds Craig for the 2 point conversion the score is 15-12 San Francisco.

Big turn of events - the Wright pick - Tyler goes in - the Niners are up 15-12 with less than 5 to play.

Giants at the 27.

1/10 - Anderson gets 3.
2/7 - Hampton is stopped at the line.
3/8 - Simms finds Hampton -- Hampton just bulldozing his way to the first down - they are at their own 43.
1/10 - Anderson gets 1.
2/9 - Anderson gets 3.
3/6 - Hampton gets 2 yards - the Giants very conservative here, staying on the ground on that third and 6 - and we are at the 2 minute warning.

So - it's 4th and 4.  Giants down 3 - at their own 49.

And they're gonna go for it -- this is it.

4/4 - George Seifert dials up the safety blitz and Carlton Williamson Sacks Simms!  Williamson sacks Simms and with 1:51 left to go in the game - the Niners take over at the NY 44.

The Niners run 3 times, gain 5 yards - New York uses all 3 of its timeouts.  The Niners punt - the Giants get one more shot - there's 1:12 left and the Giants are at their own 12.

Can Simms lead them down the field - no timeouts, they need a FG to force OT.

1/10 - Incomplete
2/10 - Fred Dean gets his second sack of the day - the Giants are backed up at the 5 - the clock is running, it's 3rd and 17.
3/17 - Simms -- Looking for Bavar --- Picked Off by Ronnie Lott!  Picked off by Ronnie Lott!  Picked off by Ronnie Lott and the San Francisco 49ers will be able to run out the clock - the 49ers have beaten the New York Giants and move their 11th team to Rnd 2.

Final: 49ers 15 Giants 12
24 combined first downs in this one - it's the Niners who survive the slugfest and advance.

Montana: 16 for 29 100 yds 1 TD 1 INT
Simms 8 for 24 109 yds 2 INT
