1st: 27 year old right hander Red Ruffing is on the Yankee Stadium mound for game 1; 18-7 with a 3.09 ERA.  1-2-3
1st: The Tigers counter with their only lefty (ideally, you'd load up on lefties against a Ruth/Gehrig team) Ed Killian, 32 years old, 11-9 with a 1.71 ERA. He gives up a leadoff walk to Tony Lazzeri and then a base hit to Earle Combs.  That means Ruth and Gehrig are both about to come up with men on base. Killian walks Ruth on four straight.  Loaded.  Nobody out.  Gehrig hits a sac fly and it's 1-0; Ben Chapman is next - he singles; it scores the second run and that's how this inning will end Tigers 0 Yankees 2

6th: Ty Cobb opens with a single - and after an out Jim Delahanty walks - but again, Detroit can't cross the plate.
6th: Combs doubles to open the inning; Killian again throws four straight balls to Ruth - two on and nobody out for Gehrig, who then walks.  Yanks in business here. Chapman comes through again, a base hit that scores two runs to double the Yankees lead. That ends it for Killian; 21 year old right hander Ralph Works enters and gets through it.  Tigers 0 Yankees 4

7th: Claude Rossman's in a first base platoon for Detroit, he singles, that's all.
7th: Lyn Lary is getting his only start of the series against a lefty (although he's now facing the RH reliever) he singles. but that's all.

SS Crosetti (21)  87      1

3rd: Cobb singles, that's it.
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: Moriarity and Stanage single - Gomez is in trouble again. He gets an out - but a Summers sac fly plates the games first run. Bush then singles home the second run. Tigers 2 Yankees 0
4th: Dickey singles with one out, that's all.

5th: Crawford's aboard on an error - and after two outs, one of which is a caught stealing; Gomez gives up back to back singles to Delahanty and Jones.  The Yankees really, really need to look at that bullpen; Gomez is maybe one bad pitch away from losing this series.  Gomez then hits Moriarity - that's two hit batsmen, obviously not intentional but it shows how poor Gomez's command is today - Oscar Stanage remains the unlikely hero - he singles home two runs -- man, this isn't over, but you can see it from here, Tigers 4 Yankees 0
5th: 1-2-3...New York's in trouble.

6th: 1-2-3
6th: Ruth doubles with one out, after the second out, Dickey walks - the Yankees need a big hit, Lazzeri singles -- 37 year old Ruth ignores the stopsign at third and trucks around for the first Yankee run.  Chapman then walks - and Sewell singles to score Dickey.  The Yanks cut it in half.  Tigers 4 Yankees 2

7th: Cobb walks with one out, but that's it -- Gomez is still in this game and despite constant trouble is still in the series.
7th: Ruth draws a two out walk - that's all.

8th Moriarity singles with one out - that's it.  Gomez gutting his way through it.
8th: Do the Yankees have an answer here? Dickey opens with a walk and Lazzeri doubles -- the Bombers are in business with the tying runs in scoring position and nobody out.  Chapman pops up and Sewell grounds out - that scores a run; 4-3 with the tying run 90 feet away.  Frankie Crosetti - comes through - he singles to right and the game is tied.  Ralph Works is the new pitcher - 21 year old right hander - the Yankees go to their bench for 24 year old Myril Hoag, he only had 54 at bats in the season but they were strong ones -- he singles -- and the Yankees have them on the corners.  That's as far as it goes -- but we're all tied up headed to the 9th.  Tigers 4 Yankees 4

9th: Jumbo Brown gets the ball for the Yanks; he gives up a leadoff single to McIntyre - Red Killefer is a 24 year old right hander and he hits in the pitchers spot - and singles.  First and second now for the Tigers -- Crawford and Cobb are lurking.  Brown gets a big 6-4-3; two outs, go ahead run at third for Crawford -- and he singles.  The Tigers go up 5-4; the 32 year old left Ed Wells comes in to face Cobb - he gets him, but now it's Tigers 5 Yankees 4 as we head to the bottom of the 9th.  Tigers 5 Yankees 4
9th: 23 year old lefty Kid Speer comes on -- and he's staring at Ruth/Gehrig/Dickey.

Ruth walks  He's on base 4 times today.
Gehrig singles.  Tying run in scoring position.  Winning run on base.  Nobody out.
26 year old right hander George Suggs enters for Detroit - and he gets Dickey to pop up.  One away.

Lazzeri to the plate -- tying run in scoring position -- winning run at first...

6-4-3 and it's over.

It's the 1909 Tigers who get this second to last spot in Region 5.  Crawford has that big game winning hit in the 9th; Cobb reached 6 times in the series, Delahanty four times, Moriarity 5 including the game 2 homer - but the MVP has to be Oscar Stanage; 3 hits today and 2 RBI after the 2 triple game 2. Let's also say George Mullin, for the 2 hit shutout in game 2.

And so - we're down to one.  Who claims the final spot in Region 5?

3rd: With one out - Keith Hernandez hits his second homer of the series - this Shea Stadium crowd roars its approval as the Mets are on the board. Strawberry walks, but that's all. Dodgers 0 Mets 1

4th: 1-2-3
4th: With two out - the Mets hit their 4th homer of the series - it's Gary Carter -- Carter pumps his fist with the curtain call and the Mets go up 2.  Dodgers 0 Mets 2

5th: 1-2-3 -- helluva start for Ojeda, 10 straight retired.
5th: Hernandez singles with 2 out - he's reached 9 times in the series; stay hot Keith Hernandez - but that's all.

6th: The Dodgers go to the bench to get switch hitting Augie Galan and he singles to lead off the inning and then swipes second, as the Mets were napping a little bit with him on the basepaths. Reiser then flies deep - deep - to right - but Strawberry catches it right in front of the wall - that moves Galan up a base however and then he scores on a Walker groundout. Camilli walks.  Medwick singles -- and the Dodgers have men on the corners -- 2 out -- down a run -- Vaughan hits a grounder to Backman -- he boots it for his second error of the day and the tying run scores.  Dodgers 2 Mets 2
6th:Hugh Casey enters for Brooklyn, brand new game - 1-2-3

7th: Herman doubles and Sullivan walks and the Dodgers are in business in the 7th -- but Ojeda buckles down and gets through it.  Big, big spot.
7th: Ed Head is next for the Dodgers - 1-2-3.  Lets go to the 8th in this showdown game to end Region 5.

8th: Camilli singles.  Davey Johnson has to be thinking about that bullpen - After an out, Vaughan walks -- again two men on for Brooklyn.  That's enough for Ojeda - he gets a good ovation and Jesse Orosco enters.  And he gets out of it.
8th: With one out - Hernandez singles again, three more hits today, such a big series.  But it ends there and we go to the 9th.

9th: 1-2-3
9th: 27 year old right hander Les Webber is the 4th Dodger pitcher.  He gives up a 2 out single to Backman but nothing else and we are once again headed to extra innings in a Region 5 showdown game.

10th: Orosco stays on; he gets an out but gives up a Camilli base hit.  He gets the second out - and then Vaughan singles - Camilli goes around to third and with two out - the Dodgers have the go ahead run standing at third.  The right hander Doug Sisk comes on for the Mets ---- and he gives up a Pee Wee Reese single.  The go ahead run scores and the Dodgers take the lead. Dodgers 3 Mets 2
10th: Can this Mets team battle back?  Right handed Newt Kimball enters.

Knight grounds to 2nd.  One away.
Lee Mazzilli, a switch hitter - will hit in the pitchers spot.  Mazzilli singles.  The tying run is on base.
Dykstra strikes out.  Two away.  Hernandez, who the Dodgers havent been able to get out is up -- he has a long at bat -- fouling off pitch after pitch with a 3-2 count -- until working a walk. 11 times on base for Keith Hernandez and he's the potential winning run.

That brings up Strawberry.  Mets down a run.  Down to their final out.

The Dodgers bring in a lefty to face the left handed Strawberry - 34 year old Larry French.

And Strawberry laces a single to right -- Dixie Walker fields it cleanly -- Mazzilli is waved around -- there is going to be a play at the plate -- Safe.

Lee Mazzilli is safe - Hernandez goes on to third -- the game is now tied - runners on the corners for young Kevin Mitchell -- he strikes out and we go to the 11th.  Dodgers 3 Mets 3

11th: The lefty Randy Niemann is next for the Mets - this crowd is tense - super, super tense here at Shea - With two out - Niemann gives up a single to Reiser - and despite their being two outs, Reiser swipes second base to once again give the Dodgers the go ahead run in scoring position.  And it pays off - Dixie Walker singles - it scores Reiser and now it's 4-3.  29 year old right hander Rick Anderson ends the inning -- but the Mets will, somehow, have to come back again or they are done.  Dodgers 4 Mets 3
11th: 34 year old right hander Bobo Newsom is the next pitcher -- and he walks Mookie Wilson on four straight balls.
Backman grounds to second -- flip to short for one -- onto first -- Backman just is able to beat it out.  But now there's one away.
Gary Carter singles to center -- Backman comes around to third.  Tying run at third. Winning run at first.  Only one out - here comes Ray Knight.
Knight hits  fly ball to left -- too shallow to tag.  2 away.  Pitchers spot coming up.

It'll be the left handed Danny Heep - Durocher counters with his game one starting pitcher Curt Davis - he can't have much left in that arm - can he get one last out to push Brooklyn through?

He can.  Heep grounds to second to end the series.

Dodgers 4
Mets 3
WP French
LP Niemann

The Dodgers move on and the Mets head home. Reiser reached 6 times in the series - including that single/stolen base in the 11th that led to the winning run. That's going to earn him the MVP.
