2015 Play in Game Picks

Tuesday, March 17, 2015

I'll have my brackets up tomorrow.  Here's my likely Final Four:

Kentucky, Arizona, Villanova, Gonzaga

Here are my first four picks:

Manhattan
BYU
Dayton
North Florida

Forever Giants: 2000 NL West Champion San Francisco Giants Year 43 (118)

1999 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season.  The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

2000 97-65
C Bobby Estalella 2.55
1B JT Snow .6
2B Jeff Kent 7.9
SS Rich Aurilia 2.8
3B Bill Mueller .85
LF Barry Bonds 8.1 MVPQ
CF Marvin Benard 1.8
RF Ellis Burks 5.15
C Doug Mirabelli .6
RF Armando Rios 1.15
CF Calvin Murray .35
MI Ramon Martinez 1.2
3B Russ Davis -.65
Uti Felipe Crespo .15
SP Livan Hernandez  4.25
SP Russ Ortiz .8
SP Shawn Estes 2.6
SP Kirk Rueter 2.6
SP Mark Gardner 1.65
RP Robb Nen 4.6
RP Felix Rodriguez 1.8

-A new century, a new ballpark - 3.3 million in attendance, 97 pythag wins, that's third best in San Francisco history behind '62 and '93 which both had 98.  This club won the NL West and then lost the NLDS to the Mets 3-1, in ten innings in game 2, in 13 innings in game 3. MVPQ seasons for both Bonds (his 6th, he goes by Marichal into 5th overall and second for San Francisco) and Kent.
