Forever Giants: 1908 New York Giants(Year 26)

1907 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season. The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

-McGraw's third 100+ win club, this is the year Fred Merkle doesn't run from first to second on what should have been a game winning hit, resulting in a tie with the Cubs, and the Giants lose the makeup on the last day of the season to lose the pennant. Mathewson has the best season in Giants history to that date and passes Connor to become the greatest Giant of all time.  This is also the end of the Giants careers of McGinnity and Bresnahan.

-Second best Giants season to that date; qs you know the Giants skipped the World Series - there was a pretty good player war on between the NL and AL, the Giants didn't want to give the rival league the box office boost of a World Series gate. Hall of Famers Dan Brouthers and an 1880s Giant, Jim O'Rourke, had a handful of PAs. Another Hall of Famer, Bill Dahlen, comes aboard as a full time shortstop.

-This was the year Ed Delahanty fell off the bridge, he was leaving the Senators in order to play for the Giants.  We could have used the bat.  It's also the year McGinnity started both ends of a double header.  Best Giants team in a half dozen years. Davis and Van Haltren finish; that ends the 19th century; there are no Giants on next year's club who were playing with the team before 1900.

-The 20th anniversary season.  The Giants only hit 6 homers in '02, their new worst season ever.  An ugly year with largely forgettable players that was one of the more important in franchise history.  The team was sold (again) with the outgoing owner buying the Orioles - and, in what wasn't exactly a swap, but close enough for these purposes, John McGraw became the manager of the Giants (and Joe McGinnity came with him).

-20 year old Christy Mathewson threw a no hitter and gave the Giants their best season from a player since '94; but this was the worst Giants team ever and runs player/manager Davis, the greatest Giants position player to that date, temporarily out of the organization.  There's a line here we'll see how far we can take through Giants history: Hall of Famer Connor was on the first Giants team in '83; he played with Hall of Famer Davis; he plays with Hall of Famer Mathewson.

-On July 17, a 19 year old Christy Mathewson made his big league debut by hitting 3 Dodgers (they weren't the Dodgers yet, but they will be eventually).  Other things happened, Buck Ewing came back to manage, Jack Doyle punched an umpire on the 4th of July and got arrested, three Giants, including George Davis, pulled people from a burning building on their way to the ballpark one day.  But mainly the Giants suffered their second consecutive abysmal season.  Davis and Van Haltren, Giants since '93/'94 are the longest tenured Giants and each have a few more years of tenure left.

2014 Survivor Series Preview

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

You know those studies showing that our evaluation of quality is directly related to price (give us a burger and tell us its 20 bucks we will like it more than if you tell us that same burger is two bucks; tell us a painting is a hundred grand and we'll like it more than if we think it was painted by your middle school kid - you don't need more examples, and you also don't need to keep showing me your 7th grader's art work, Todd)?

Survivor Series is free this year.  Barely worth it.

WWE is dreary as we hit the Thanksgiving FPV, it's not entirely their fault.  CM Punk quit (although, to some extent that's due to WWE placing the burden for the shortfalls in revenue from the Network on the backs of labor) Daniel Bryan got hurt (although, he's been seen more on TMZ for foiling a robbery and at the victory parade for the World Champion San Francisco Giants than has he on WWE television) and the talent pool is thin (although, Cesaro is the best wrestler on the main roster and he isn't on this card and a handful of the best wrestlers in the world are in developmental and not on this card) and people really do love long talking segments by people named McMahon (although, it's not 1998).

I'd say this shapes up as an all-time bad Survivor Series, but truth be told, you have to go back a dozen years to get even a 3 3/4 star match from this event, the last 4 star+ match was back in 1996, and there have only been 3 matches to hit 4 stars in the entire history of the Survivor Series.

Expectations should generally be tempered.  Really, really tempered.

Here's the card:

Survivor Series Match: Team Cena (Yawn Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Big Show, Erick Rowan and Ryback) vs. Team Authority (Seth Rollins, Kane, Mark Henry, Rusev and Luke Harper)

A year and a half ago, as a way to add obstacles to Daniel Bryan's title chase, Hunter and The Princess emerged as a heel authority faction. Depending upon your Stephanie McMahon tolerance, it either grew tedious by the end of 2013 or halfway through the first segment.  Predictably, we're still here, with Cena being the focal point of Authority animosity.  The stip here is that if Team Cena loses they all get fired and if Team Authority loses, they are out of power.

Ziggler's the only worker on the babyface side; he lost his IC title to Harper in the go home RAW, Ryback's once push has resumed, and his either surviving, fighting Rusev to a double elimination, or flipping sides makes sense as a booking result. The Wyatt Family separated as opposed to breaking up, so Rowan's reveal on the babyface side doesn't have any storyline antecedent, presumably he feuds with Harper. Show and Henry were friends and Mark turned heel.

Rollins and Harper are both good workers on the heel side, ; Rusev has gotten a big push in a 1980s style "he's an evil Russian" storyline that doesn't make a ton of geopolitical sense but tickles the jingoistic genitals of enough WWE fans to keep alive.  Kane's been part of the Authority group for quite awhile.

It's a 3+ star-ish match, likely to get a ton of time.  Obviously, no one is getting fired and the Authority gimmick is a year past its sell by date, but this seems like a weird, low impact way to end it; a screwy heel win with Vince returning as a babyface to stop the mass firings and set in motion McMahon v. McMahon wouldn't surprise.  A Stone Cold Orton babyface return to kill everyone wouldn't surprise.

I can't be bothered with any of it.  There was nothing more overrated in the Attitude Era than a McMahon near a wrestling ring, in 2014 it feels nearly as desperate as Jim Carrey playing that Dumb and Dumber character again.  Every part of this feel exhausted.

(Edit - 3 1/2 stars, most of the work was just okay save for a hot closing Ziggler vs. the world spot; Sting made his debut to give the babyfaces the win in a longer than helpful from a workrate perspective segment.  Looks like Sting/Hunter at 31.

Dean Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt
I've never cared for Hunter or Cena; looking at each in the light most favorable, the demands of so many hours of weekly television make it impossible to keep a wrestling character fresh. We've seen that with both Ambrose and (especially) Wyatt, two interesting characters and talented performers who are in a fairly pedestrian feud.  Ambrose and Rollins feuded following the Shield breakup; the conclusion of that program morphed into the beginning of this one (with Ambrose sliding down to midcard).  This is probably the best match of the night (the only match worth watching, I'd guess). I'll say its a Wyatt win and they keep going.
(Edit - 3 1/4 stars, match of the night, not saying much.  A DQ finish to set up what looks like a TLC match)

WWE Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Title Match: Goldust & Stardust vs. Usos vs. Los Matadores vs. Miz and Mizdow
Cody and Dustin are the tag champs, they took from the Usos - Damien Sandow has become Miz's doppelganger in a weird storyline that would be more palatable if their matches were better, and the Colons fill out the group.  A switch to Miz/Mizdow makes a lot of sense.  This will be fine.
(Edit - they did the predicted switch, it was as expected

And two women's matches. Two!  40% of the card has no chance to be better than 3 stars.  None.
(Edit - they were not better, they were much, much worse).

It's not great, Bob.  Here's the ranking of every match Survivor Series history.
The match times are rounded and they are followed by my star ratings for all of the 3 stars and up matches.
