Ranked, 2018 WWE Roster (1-100)

Sunday, April 29, 2018

There are more than 100 acts signed to this promotion, I didn't rank all of them.

I didn't rank the women; were I to add them in, they'd be in the single digits.

Some tags were split, some kept together.  I may have missed someone.  I didn't rank Neville.  Did I consider injuries and age and availability and all manner of factors?  Yes, yes I did.

2018 NBA Playoff Predictions

Thursday, April 12, 2018

Every year at this time I talk about Simple Rating System (SRS) the pro-basketball-reference rating system; for the past 3 years its been in conjunction with the historic stretch put together by the Warriors.  Here's every team in NBA history with an SRS over 10:

1971 Bucks -won title
1996 Bulls - won title
1972 Lakers - won title
2017 Warriors - won title
1997 Bulls - won title
1972 Bucks - lost to that Lakers team in playoffs
2016 Warriors - lost in the finals
2016 Spurs - lost in the playoffs
1992 Bulls - won title
2015 Warriors - won title

10 teams, 3 of them the last 3 Warriors teams.

This year's Warriors SRS is 5.79.  This team is not those teams is my point.  This looks less like year 4 of the dynasty and more like a step back.

East
Toronto d Washington
Boston d. Milwaukee
Philly d. Miami
Cleveland d. Indiana

Toronto d. Cleveland
Philly d. Boston

Toronto d. Philly

West
Houston d. Minnesota
Warriors d. San Antonio
Portland d. New Orleans
Utah d. OKC

Houston d. Utah
Warriors d. Portland

Houston d. Warriors

NBA Finals: Houston d. Toronto

Wrestlemania 34 Preview

Thursday, April 5, 2018

Wrestlemania is 7 hours long.

You probably know that; you're reading a Wrestlemania preview on a blog in 2018, but goddamn that's a long show.  I am certain there was a time in my life where I would have been stoked to watch a 7 hour wrestling show as it aired, but that time is not today.

Wrestlemania 34 is in New Orleans on Sunday, here's the card.

1. Universal championship: Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Roman Reigns
-Brock's the top guy in the company; I don't mean he's the biggest draw or he's the best worker or he's the biggest star - I mean that since his return to the promotion, he's largely been positioned at the top of the roster.  Brock's the champ, whether he has the belt or not.

That ends Sunday - WWE is going to put Roman Reigns over him in the middle of the ring and Lesnar's going back to UFC. This is for the Universal Title, that's the RAW Title, the one created two years ago.  Lesnar took the belt from Goldberg at WM33 and has held it for a year.  Reigns has been positioned for the last 3 years as the guy who will take Cena's place at the head of the promotion, and the idea has long seemed that he'd beat Lesnar in order earn that spot. Reigns won the chamber match in February to get the shot and has played the card Cena played on the Rock "you're a part timer, you don't really work here, the champ needs to work here" which maybe....maybe has helped minimize the likely fan animosity toward Reigns winning this title.

Reigns is good; the negative reaction to him is outsized - but as a symbol of all of the ways, large and small, that WWE has ignored fan preference for the last 15+ years, booing him is a reasonable expression of that frustration.  And from the perspective of the company, they can just pretend the mixed reaction is indicative of success, like they did with Cena.  I'd guess anything that isn't a CM Punk chant is fine with WWE.

Lesnar matches are good unless Lesnar isn't interested in their not being good, if he has his working boots on, no reason this isn't a four star match.

(Edit - it wasn't, it was a 3 star match that the crowd hated; the booking was designed to get the crowd to turn on Brock, they did, but they didn't embrace Reigns or the idea that Reigns was going to win.  He didn't win, as it turned out, Brock signed a new deal and kept the belt.

My Star Ratings of Every Wrestlemania Main Event:

1. Hulk Hogan/Mr. T d. Roddy Piper/Paul Orndorff **3/4
2. WWF Title: Hulk Hogan d. King Kong Bundy **1/4
3. WWF Title: Hulk Hogan d. Andre the Giant *

2. WWE championship: AJ Styles (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
The cornerstone of TNA against the man (other than Tanahashi) most associated with New Japan's resurgence for the WWF Title (not some bullshit belt created six minutes ago - this is the by god World Wrestling Federation Championship) at Wrestlemania.  Is this real life?

It's a babyface matchup, which I like at Wrestlemania as it marks it as a special match; AJ took the title from Jinder Mahal (in the discussion for worst WWF Champion ever) Nakamura won the Royal Rumble, and here we are.  A couple of years ago these two had one of the best matches of the year when both were in NJPW, this is positioned as the workrate match for this card - high stakes, it will get time, the quality of the match is the main selling point.  It's what you want.  There have been 29 four star matches at Wrestlemania; if this isn't 30 it's a significant disappointment.  Nakamura's going to beat him.

(Edit - this is a much better match than it will be remembered as being, 3 3/4 stars, the second best match of the night - but that's less than 4, that makes it, a significant disappointment, and Nakamura lost.

3. Daniel Bryan/Shane McMahon vs. Kevin Owens/Sami Zayn
Forget about the Shane McMahon part of this for a second and dig if you will this picture - Kevin Steen and El Generico, two of the best wrestlers in the world, two men heavily associated with the 21st century independent wrestling boom - are facing Bryan Danielson, one of the greatest wrestlers who ever lived, in his first match in three years.  I would buy the show under any circumstances just for this match.  It may not be great -  because the Shane McMahon part does exist, but there's no earthly way it won't be a memorable moment when Bryan returns to the ring, and my expectation is they'll pull this off.  I think the babyfaces go over here as well (Bryan and McMahon are the figurehead commissioners of Smackdown, Owens and Zayn are the lead heels of that brand, there's been a long feud, it's been good and here we are).  Owens and Zayn are "fired" from Smackdown if they lose.

(Edit - Bryan's return was memorable, and then they booked him to sit out most of the match while the promoter's kid "sold" - it didn't make 3 stars)

4. Kurt Angle/Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H/Stephanie McMahon
This might be the main event; it's certainly the match with the most casual interest.  My interest is limited to seeing Angle in his first Mania match in over a decade; I don't care about Rousey, whatever her value as a shoot fighter, there's no evidence she can be a good professional wrestler and (while I don't care about this sort of thing) the personal qualities that made her enormously successful outside of MMA dont translate for me at all yet in this environment.  Hunter is no longer a good worker; Stephanie is my least favorite McMahon (and that's a race to the bottom) and it appears that Kurt has finally drained the last drops out of his ability to have a good match.  I want to see Angle - but my expectation here is very low.

(Edit - they got the most out of this they could, it was much more spectacle than match, but the wrestling they did wasn't embarrassing, I've got it at 3 1/4)

5. John Cena v. Undertaker
I include this here because, if this match is on the show, you can't talk about it any lower than this.  I say "if" because this match isn't announced - it's assumed - but it sort of seems to me that they're setting up more of a confrontation to set up a match than an actual match.  I'd assume the build is heading to a retirement match for the Undertaker - Shawn ended Flair's career at Mania, Undertaker ended Shawn's, and I think Cena is going to put the Dead Man down, but not Sunday.

(They had a two minute match with the Taker going over, I think we see this again in a year)

6. IC: The Miz (c) vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Bálor
Rollins and Balor had a four star match on the go home RAW; a thing that happens sometimes with Mania is that the workrate version of the match actually occurs on television (usually after) my concern is that's the case here.  Miz is fine but drags down the likelihood of a great match here.  Miz is on his 8th IC run; he's had the belt since beating Reigns in January.  Balor and Rollins are both babyfaces; I'd expect one of them wins and the other heads to Smackdown (probably with the Miz, so he can feud with Bryan).

(Best match of the night, 4 stars, which only makes it the 4th best televised WWE match of the weekend)

7. US Title: Randy Orton (c) vs. Bobby Roode vs. Jinder Mahal vs. Rusev
I have very little expectations here; Orton and Roode are both babyfaces, Orton took the title from Roode a month ago in what has been an underperforming in-ring program.  Mahal's the heel, he's been in the mix for this belt for months, losing to Roode in the finals of a tournament to crown a champion.  Orton and Roode might both be better served as halves of a tag act at this point in their careers, Jinder shouldn't be on the roster - Rusev was hot-shot into the program, either to aid it or to pacify him.  Rusev's getting an enormous crowd reaction (sort of like Zach Ryder once got an enormous crowd reaction; Rusev's a better worker than Ryder - but the fan reaction is more playful, "hey, it's fun to cheer for Rusev" as opposed to insistent "this guy is our guy and he needs to get pushed now".  Ryder won a title at Mania and I think Rusev does as well.

(Jinder took the belt in a nondescript match)

8. Smackdown Tags: The Usos (c) vs. The New Day vs. The Bludgeon Brothers (Harper and Rowan)
If they give it enough time, this is the sneaky breakout match of this show.  Usos are one of the best tag teams in the world; they've had the belts since October, when they took them from New Day - who had taken the belts from the Usos - who had taken the belts from the New Day - who had taken the belts from the Usos.  Some of those matches have been very good; the best worker in the match is Harper, and his addition (and the possibility of this becoming some type of ladder related match) gives this some extra juice.  I'd expect Harper and Rowan to take the belts.

(They didn't give it any time, Harper/Rowan take)

9. RAW Tags: Cesaro/Sheamus (c) vs. Braun Strowman /Mystery Partner
Like the Usos, Cesaro/Sheamus have dominated the RAW tags for over a year, they're on their fourth title run and cleared out the rest of the division.  Enter Strowman - maybe the most over guy in the promotion, he's not for me, mainly just size and beard, but he's not terrible in limited doses and you understand why they push him.  The partner could be anyone from Samoa Joe to Rey Mysterio (probably its Big Cass) and they win the belts in what is probably not the best match.  I'm ready to see Cesaro (who might still be the best wrestler in the promotion) back as a single.

(A young child was the mystery partner and is now one half of the WWF tag team champions; I've been writing a wrestling counterfactual for over a decade, occasionally, as we see guys like AJ Styles have long title reigns IRL, I'll be asked if the counterfactual makes sense to continue since WWE has finally gotten it right. And then, this.)

10. Smackdown Women's Title: Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Asuka
This could be a really good match; Asuka is head and shoulders above the rest of the women on the roster, she's a legitimately good worker as opposed to a good women's wrestler - Charlotte's a good women's wrestler, but that's plenty good enough to have a really good match here.  Asuka's still undefeated; I assume that stays true and she goes over.  I am historically on the negative end for women's wrestling, most specifically WWF women's wrestling - but this is a match I'm looking forward to seeing.  There's another wrestler, Carmella, who isn't particularly good, with a briefcase, and she might be involved here.

(It was a really good match, 3 3/4, with Asuka losing her streak)

11. RAW Women's Title: Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Nia Jax
This is more of a typical WWF women's match, they aren't terrible workers but there's just no chance this is a three star match.

(This was a very typical WWE women's match and didn't get close to 3 stars)

That's the show proper - the pre show has the finals of the juniors tournament (Cedric Alexander, who is really good, facing Mustafa Ali, who is fine) and both a men's and a women's battle royal (if someone isn't on the main card, they're probably in one of those two matches).

That's the show.  It's a definite buy; Daniel Bryan/Kurt Angle/the end of this Lesnar run are all good attractions; I'm expecting one of the women's matches and one of the tag matches to deliver - and then you get Nakamura/Styles.  My expectations are high for WM34.

I'm not old enough to have seen every Super Bowl, but I was 14 for the first Wrestlemania - the build for which was right in my not yet critical of corporate homogeneity brain.

I've seen every Wrestlemania match.  This is, I believe, all of them.  Ranked in order of quality, for whatever reason.  Match times are rounded; the Wrestlemania at which the match took place is in parentheses; there's a star rating for every *** and up match.
