Two months before, Joe Montana had back surgery; his physician said the idea that he'd ever play football again was crazy.

Which may have been true - but nonetheless, he did play football again, returning here to throw for 3 scores, all to Jerry Rice, in a 43-17 win over the Cardinals.

By decade's end, the Niners had two more Super Bowl wins.
