Region 8 is here

Round One.  Region 1.  Best of 3 Series.

1. 1939 New York Yankees v. 128. 1979 Baltimore Orioles

Game 1

Orioles 4
Yankees 1
WP: Flanagan
LP: Ruffing

The first game of the tournament is an upset; Mike Flanagan throws a complete game and the Orioles move a game away from knocking out the top seed.  Red Ruffing takes the loss for New York.

1st: Baltimore scores two in the first; Al Bumbry led off with a walk, then stole second. With two outs Ruffing intentionally walked Eddie Murray; Doug Decinces drew a walk to load the bases - and then Kiko Garcia made himself a hero with a two run single.

2nd/3rd: Bumbry stole his second base of the game an inning later; but the Orioles didn't score. New York had a huge chance in the third - two on, two out - when Flanagan struck out Joe DiMaggio.

4th: The Yankees halved the lead in the 4th; George Selkirk led off with a homer; a Bill Dickey walk and Kiko Garcia error later and New York again had two on, this time with just one out.  Flanagan again got a big strike out, this time of Frankie Crosetti.  There's no DH as the pre-DH Yankees are the home team, so Ruffing hit for himself and he laced a single to left - too sharply for Dickey to attempt to score, so that loaded the bases with 2 out - and Flanagan got Charlie Keller looking on a called strike 3.

5th: John Lowenstein hit a one out double in the fifth, but the Orioles couldn't capitalize and it remained 2-1.

7th: The scoring ended in the 7th; with one out Crosetti booted a Bumbry grounder, a Lowenstein bloop put runners on the corners; and then Ken Singleton and Eddie Murray hit back to back singles to make the game 4-1, the final score.  New York didn't put another man in scoring position.

2 hits each for Lowenstein, Singleton, and the unlikely hero, Kiko Garcia.  Selkirk was the only Yankee with 2 hits.

Baltimore is one win away from kicking off the tournament with an upset of the top seed.

Game 2
Yankees 1
Orioles 5

WP: McGregor
LP: Hadley

Well, that's why they play the games.

Scotty McGregor goes 7, holds the Yankees to 3 hits and we kick off the tournament with a shocking upset.  #128 beats #1.

1st: It looked like a reversal of fortune from the very first pitch - Joe Gordon led off the game with a homer just inside the left field foul pole.  New York went with Bump Hadley instead of Lefty Gomez in a certain to be questioned decision; he put two men on in the first - with a single by Bumbry and a walk by Singleton; but he induced the 4-6-3 double play from Murray and New York held that 1-0 lead.

3rd: The Orioles put two on again in the third - with two outs Babe Dahlgren couldn't handle a Bumbry ground ball and Lowenstein drew a walk, but Hadley got Singleton to hit a comebacker to end the threat.

4th/5th/6th And then in the 4th - Baltimore got 'em.  Murray led off with a walk and Gary Roenicke blasted a 2 run homer to right to give the Orioles a lead they'd never relinquish.  The Yanks had a runner in scoring position in the 5th and 6th but couldn't capitalize. In the bottom of the sixth Baltimore effectively ended the series - Murray led off with a single and Gary Roenicke - once again - hit a 2 run homer, this one just barely clearing the center field fence and it was 4-1.

7th/8th/9th: Marius Russo came on for New York and gave up the 5th run in the 7th; Bumbry singled, Lowenstein got hit with a pitch, Keller dropped a fly ball allowing Singleton to reach and then a Murray double play made it 5-1.  Tippy Martinez entered for Baltimore and threw a perfect 8th and 9th to send everyone home.

One hit in the series for DiMaggio; 2 hits in this one for Bumbry and the two big two run homers for the series MVP Roenicke.

The Orioles move onto Round 2 where they will face the winners of this matchup:

64. 1931 Philadelphia Athletics v. 65. 1984 Detroit Tigers

Game 1

Tigers 3
A's 1

WP: Petry
LP: Grove
Sv: Hernandez

1st/2nd/3rd: Detroit gets game 1 on the road, Dan Petry beating Lefty Grove. Detroit put a man in scoring position early, Chet Lemon got a 2 out double in the first, but he died there.  Larry Herndon led off the second with a double, but Grove pitched his way out of that jam as well.  He wasn't as fortunate in the third; Alan Trammell led off with a walk, Lou Whitaker singled to second, Lemon struck out and then Kirk Gibson drove home the first run of the game with a base hit to left.  Mickey Cochrane threw Gibson out trying to steal second - and with two out Herndon hit his second double in two innings to make it 2-0 Tigers.

3rd/4th: The A's had a runner in scoring position in the third but couldn't dent the plate, Detroit kept the pressure on Grove in the 4th, with two out Petry got an unlikely base hit, and then Grove hit Trammell on the arm.  Whitaker ground out to first to end the threat and keep the Tiger lead at 2-0.

6th/7th: Philly's first hit of the game came with 2 out in the 6th on a Jimmy Dykes infield single; Detroit had another man die in scoring position in their half after a Howard Johnson single and stolen base. The second A's hit was by Grove himself, who led off the 6th with a single but couldn't advance. The 7th provided Philadelphia their real chance.  Al Simmons led off with a single, an out later Mule Haas walked to put the tying run on first.  Bing Miller hit a texas leaguer that just got past the mound and now the bases are loaded with only one out in a 2-0 game.

7th/8th: Sparky Anderson left Petry in the game - he was rewarded with harmless shallow flyball outs by Dykes and Dib Williams.  With 2 out in the 8th, Lance Parrish homered to left center off of Grove and Detroit was up 3-0.

9th: Petry started the 9th inning - and gave up a monster, light tower busting lead off homer to Jimmie Foxx that made it 3-1, after a Trammell error Sparky made the move, bringing in Willie Hernandez.  He gave up a single to Miller and the A's were in business.  2 on.  No one out.  Winning run coming to the plate.

9th: But Hernandez bore down - got Dykes to strike out swinging and then Williams to ground 6-4-3 to end the game.

2 doubles by Herndon, 2 singles by Ho-Jo, and the Parrish homer set the pace for Detroit; Miller had a couple hits for the A's along with the Foxx homer.  Petry goes 8 and gets the win to set up Detroit, going back home, with big game Jack Morris ready to take the mound.

Game 2

Athletics 7
Tigers 8
WP: Lopez
LP: McDonald

The first extra innings game thusfar ends our second series; the Tigers knocking out the A's in 11 innings in a game with 31 combined hits.

1st: Jack Morris got the ball for the Tigers and got rocked early; the Athletics scoring 3 in the first. Max Bishop led off with a walk and was driven home by a Mickey Cochrane double to the left field corner. Al Simmons then hit a 2 run homer to left and 3 batters into the game Philadelphia led 3-0

2nd: The Tigers get two back in the second off of Rube Walberg; a Bishop errant throw put Rusty Kuntz on first to lead off the inning, and out later Larry Herndon hit his third double of the series to put men on second and third.  Howard Johnson plated the first Tiger run with a sac fly - and Darrell Evans got the second with a run scoring single.

3rd: An inning later, the Tigers caught up on a 2 out Kirk Gibson homer that just cleared the right field wall.

5th: The Tigers took the lead two innings later; Alan Trammell led off the inning with a bloop single and Lou Whitaker followed with a 2 run homer that put the Tigers up 5-3.

6th: Walberg's still on the hill for the A's and he gave up another one in the 6th; Darrell Evans sat in game one; but he's at first base today and hit a one out double; a walk and an a flyout followed, then Chet Lemon singled Evans home, and Detroit had a 6-3 lead with only three innings to play.

7th: Morris had only given up a single since the first three batters of the game, but got into trouble in the 7th, Phil Todt and Bing Miller opened up the inning with singles - but Morris strike outs of Jimmy Dykes and Max Bishop sandwiched a Dib Williams pop up to end the threat.

8th: You'd understand if the Tiger faithful were looking to Sparky to make a move when Morris got in trouble again in the 8th; with two out Jimmie Foxx and Mule Haas singled back to back, but Phil Todt harmlessly flew out to right and now the Tigers were 3 outs away from advancing.

8th: Detroit added what sure looked like an insurance run in their half of the 8th, back to back one out singles by Trammell and Whitaker put runners on the corners for Chet Lemon, whose ground out wide of the bag at first plated Trammell and Detroit took a 7-3 lead into the 9th inning.

9th:With one out, Jimmy Dykes homered to right center to get that run back; Williams followed with a single and that was the end of Morris's day, Willie Hernandez came on; his first pitch went to the backstop and allowed the runner to move to scoring position and an out later, he scored on a Mickey Cochrane single.  7-5 Tigers; two out - down to their final strike, Al Simmons hit a game tying 2 run homer to left and the A's had completed the comeback.

9th: Eddie Rommel was on now for the A's, he put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the inning after singles by Lance Parrish and Howard Johnson, but Rommel got Evans to ground out to send the game into extras.

10th: Todt opened up the 10th with a base hit and moved to second on another Hernandez wild pitch but that's where he would remain.

11th: The A's had one more chance - Al Simmons doubled with 2 out, and the A's loaded the bases with back to back walks to Foxx and Haas. Doc Cramer, with his 64 OPS+ had entered as a pinch runner the prior inning - and he stood in with the bases loaded and 2 out; Sparky brought in Aurelio Lopez, Senor Smoke, who induced a fly ball to left.

11th: 20 year old Hank McDonald got the call from Connie Mack to go to the mound for the 11th, he got the first out - but then Kuntz singled to right; Parrish walked - and Larry Herndon won the series with a single to center; Kuntz just getting in under the tag at the plate.

Bedlam in Detroit - Herndon's game winning RBI capped a series where he hit 3 doubles and he takes the MVP.

So - we're underway.  The '79 Orioles and '84 Tigers advance into the second round.

Region 7 is here.

Check out Part 1 to see what this is.

We've hit the last Region to complete the full 128 field; the 128 greatest baseball teams ever assembled.

8. 1910 World Champion Philadelphia A's
v.
121. 2002 NL Champion San Francisco Giants

57. 1931 World Champion St Louis Cardinals
v.
72. 1951 World Champion New York Yankees

-The Giants have the most representatives in the field from the NL - tied for second is St Louis.  DiMaggio and a 19 year old Mantle are on this Yankee club.

56. 2001 AL West Champion Seattle Mariners
v.
73. 1913 World Champion Philadelphia Athletics

-The Mariners won 116 games but couldn't get by the Yankees in the ALCS; 5 Hall of Famers on this A's squad.

24. 1938 World Champion New York Yankees
v.
105. 1957 World Champion Milwaukee Braves

-It really is entirely a coincidence that the Yankees make up exactly 1/4 of the field; this is #32; they meet Hank Aaron's only team in the tournament.

41. 2019 NL West Champion Los Angeles Dodgers
v.
88. 1903 World Champion Boston Red Sox

-And another coincidence - the first World Champions take on a team from last season when the Boston Americans take on the Dodgers.

That wraps up the preview - we kick off tomorrow with the first two series from Region One.

128 Team All Time Baseball Tournament - Region One

Saturday, May 23, 2020

So, time for a new tournament.

Earlier this year I added to my prior methodology and ranked the top 128 MLB teams of all time again.

I've created a bracket, largely following the ranking but sliding seeds to avoid an organization matching up in the first two rounds or teams from the same season in the first two rounds.  Not dividing by league, just the 128 best teams ever (actually, just the World Series era).

Last time I did this, I used three different WAR metrics to choose winners; here, I'm going to use the What If Sports simulation engine.

Round 1 will be a best of 3 series; higher seed gets the home field advantage.

Let's take a look at the first of 8 regions.

Region One
1. 1939 World Champion New York Yankees
v.
128. 1979 AL Champion Baltimore Orioles

-It's 24 year old Joe DiMaggio leading a 6 Hall of Fame NYY squad against a 23 year old Eddie Murray and his Orioles team that lost to the Pirates in the Series.

64. 1931 AL Champion Philadelphia Athletics
v.
65. 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers

-5 Hall of Famers on this A's team including Lefty Grove who went 31-4.  They take on a Tiger team that went 7-1 in the postseason.

32. 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox
v.
97. 1977 World Champion New York Yankees

-David Ortiz will, one assumes, make the Hall of Fame, but if Schilling and Manny don't ever get in, he could be the only member of the '07 Sox to get in.  They meet their historic rivals; The Bronx Zoo - Billy, Reggie, George and the '77 Yankees.

33. 1943 NL Champion St Louis Cardinals
v.
96. 1908 New York Giants

-22 year old Stan Musial leads the Cards against the first team in the field not to make the postseason, the 98 win second place Giants.

16. 1975 World Champion Cincinnati Reds
v.
113. 1934 World Champion St Louis Cardinals

-Here's Joe Morgan's slashline from '75: .327/.466/.508; his Big Red Machine takes on a Cardinal squad with 7 Hall of Famers.

49. 1941 World Champion New York Yankees
v.
80. 1911 NL Champion New York Giants

-30 year old Christy Mathewson takes his 1.99 ERA into battle against DiMaggio's second team in this region.

17. 1929 World Champion Philadelphia Athletics

The Non-Drafted Niners

Thursday, May 14, 2020

Okay, so here are my thoughts about the Maiocco/Papa 49ers draft.  For this exercise, I'm going to do my own draft, with the same rules, of players not taken in their draft.

1. John Brodie QB
2-3. Harris Barton OT/Gene Washington WR
4-5. Justin Smith DL/Len Rohde OT
6-7. Y.A. Tittle QB/Michael Carter DL - I'll make the same decision made in the actual draft that the spirit of the exercise requires the second QB be taken quickly.
8-9. Ken Norton LB/Garrison Hearst RB
10-11 Dwaine Board DL/Fred Quillan C
12-13. Tommy Hart DL/Derrick Deese OT
14-15. Ricky Watters RB/Richard Sherman CB - Watters is the WC selection for team 2, Sherman the first active player off the board in this draft.
16-17. Tim McDonald S/Larry Allen G - Aldon Smith gets left behind as Allen becomes the WC choice for Team 1.
18-19. Ray Brown G/Ken Willard FB
20-21. Bruce Bosley G/Nick Bosa DL - Bosa obviously is super, super speculative, but what the hell.
22-23. Mike Walter LB/Ahmad Brooks LB
24-25. Freddie Solomon WR/Willie Harper LB
26-27. Vernon Davis TE/Julian Peterson LB
28-29. Jeremy NewberryC /Derek Smith LB - I'm going to knock out the offensive lines for both teams now, even though both could theoretically wait
30-31. Bubba Paris T/John Ayers G
32-33. Don Griffin CB/Lee Woodall LB
34-35. Bill Romanowski LB/Kevin Fagan DL - so, both teams will play a 3-4 defense
36-37 -Eric Reid S /Eric Davis CB
38-39 -RC Owens WR/Tony Parrish S
40-41. Michael Crabtree WR/Russ Francis TE
42-43. Bruce Taylor CB/Mel Phillips S
44-45. Tom Rathman FB /Robbie Gould K
46-47. Doug Cunningham-returner/Frankie Albert P - a mild cheat, Albert did punt 299 times and pretty well, and getting him on the roster as a second QB is worth whatever tiny drop there might be in selecting the next P
48-49. Buck Shaw-HC/Mitch Wishnowsky P, Runager and Wittum is a coin flip for next punter, so I'll take the active guy and hope he lives up to that draft pick; I'm assuming the same rules apply for HC selection as for player selection.
50-51. Phil Dawson K/Kyle Shanahan, HC - Mariucci would be the other possibility here
52. Dexter Carter - returner

So, 4 teams drafted.  Here they are:

The Maiocco/Papa 49ers draft

Tuesday, May 12, 2020

Matt Maiocco and Greg Papa held a highly enjoyable All Time 49ers Draft.  I have thoughts (because what else is there to think about?)

The rules were these - they drafted 22 position players, 11 on each side of the ball, plus kicker, punter, and a return guy.  That's 25 picks and they drafted a coach, that's 26.  The players had to be Niners at least 5 years, with the exceptions that any current player could be chosen and one player could be chosen as a "Wild Card" who could have any Niner tenure at all.

1. Maiocco got the first pick and chose Walsh.  Now, I lived through the entire Walsh era; my first 49er team was 1978, he's a personal hero of mine and I would hate, I mean absolutely hate, being on the other side of the field from him.  But taking any coach over Jerry Rice is a really challenging decision to support.  I can see Walsh over anyone else (I'd rather have Montana, but the alternative to Montana is Young and that is a slight enough drop that while I would pick Joe, I can see a decision to take Walsh).  But Rice...when given the chance to get the (inarguable, in my view) greatest wide receiver in NFL history, someone who can beat you from anywhere on the field, who can block with anyone, who will be the hardest working guy in any locker room - if I had the top overall pick, I think it's got to be Rice.

2-3. Papa picked Joe second and Jerry third (it's a snake draft).  I might have taken Lott instead of Joe, the idea being that even if I lose Joe I get Steve, but the drop from Lott to the next best safety on the board is precipitous.

4-5. Maiocco picked Lott and Young.  There was post-draft discussion about how soon someone was required to select that second QB (theoretically, once Joe goes you can wait until the end of the draft to get Steve) but Maiocco felt that really violated the spirit of the draft and that's a reasonable position (although probably a losing one, in comparing the rosters).

6-7. Papa took Jimmy Johnson and Bryant Young.  Johnson's reasonable, there are a handful of Niner Hall of Famers sitting on the board, Johnson's the top corner in franchise history.  BY is a tougher choice to support with Leo Nomellini on the board at the same position.

8-9. Maiocco took Nomellini and Kittle.  Nomellini would have been my pick at #6, so I like him here...this is really, really aggressive for Kittle.  His season last year is easily the best TE season in franchise history, so were you to argue that he's the pick at TE over Brent Jones and Vernon Davis (the two best TE in franchise history for career value) that seems reasonable to me, but taking Kittle here, over say, Bob St Clair or Dave Wilcox or (since Maiocco didn't get Rice) TO is more than a little curious (and apparently influenced by John Lynch)

10-11. Papa took Patrick Willis and Roger Craig.  Willis is fine here, I probably take him with one of these two picks also. Really tough not to go with St Clair or Wilcox with the other pick; Roger's a defensible pick if you're just ranking the top Niners of all time - but with Joe Perry and Hugh McElhenny sitting on the board, I think you push RB down a little bit.

12-13. Maiocco took St Clair and Staley; I obviously like the St Clair pick - I'm not sure Staley over Harris Barton is the decision I'd make, and at this spot in the draft, Wilcox is a stronger selection.

14-15. Papa took Cross and Sapolu; Cross is fine here, this is pretty early for Sapolu - Charles Haley is on the board, Wilcox is on the board, TO is on the board, and at some point you've got to bite on Deion.

16-17. Maiocco took Perry and Wilcox; I have Perry as the top RB in franchise history, just ahead of Craig, and have been advocating for Wilcox for a couple of rounds, so obviously I like these selections.

18-19. Papa took Woody Peoples and Haley.  Haley is fine, other than Owens, he's the top player remaining on my board.  Peoples is a wild selection at this spot in the draft, Papa just went interior offensive line with Cross and Sapolu - there's not another interior lineman who should be picked anywhere close to this spot.  And I'd go McIntyre above Peoples for sure at a guard spot - Papa also could have taken another center and had Cross and Sapolu both play guard; Fred Quillan and Forrest Blue are on the board.  He doesn't need to take a tackle as Maiocco has already taken two of them, but there are tackles (Barton, Fahnhorst, Wallace) who you'd clearly rank ahead of Peoples.  You can't see TO and Deion Sanders on the board and take Woody Peoples to be your third interior OL.

20-21. Maiocco took Cedric Hardman and Eric Wright.  My top remaining players are Owens and Gore, with McElhenny right behind; having taken Perry, McElhenny would be hard for me to resist. I have Hardman much lower on my list; if you're dying for a defensive end take Justin Smith.  I'd prefer Dwaine Board, Tommy Hart (although it's close with those two guys) - but there's also Charlie Krueger and Dana Stubblefield if you want to go DLine.  You don't need Hardman is my point.  Wright's the top corner remaining if you are looking at Niner career value; I'd have taken Deion for sure by this point.

22-23. Papa effectively ends the competitive portion of the draft by taking Owens and Sanders.  It's a knockout, just really no way for Maiocco to recover.  Once he doesn't get Rice, he's got to get Owens; dropping down to the next level is like not getting Joe or Steve and dropping to John Brodie and YA Tittle.

24-25. Maiocco takes Fred Dean and NaVorro Bowman; Dean had a better top end than say, Charlie Krueger, Bowman a better top end than say, Keena Turner, so I get these selections in a "take Deion over Eric Wright" way, and with Papa having already taken Haley and Willis, there's a defensive value in these picks like there would be in taking TO once you dont get Rice.

26-27. Papa takes Krueger and Stubblefield.  I like Justin Smith ahead of either of them, and have guys still sitting on my board ranked higher at other positions (who jumps first at the second RB?)

28-29. Maiocco takes John Taylor and Guy McIntyre.  Hmmm...well, if you want a WR (which you don't need, since you've already lost the two best in franchise history and can just wait now) you've got Gene Washington and Dwight Clark.  If you want a kick returner (which appears to be the case) you've got Abe Woodson.  And Papa's already taken all the interior offensive linemen he's going to take, you don't need to grab McIntyre here.  Take Hugh McElhenny.  Take Justin Smith for the love of God.

30-31.  Papa took Turner and Merton Hanks; Maiocco already has Lott, which means Papa has his choice of Hanks and Dwight Hicks, who I'd have ranked about the same, that could be pushed down a little bit, particularly with Justin Smith available.

32-33. Maiocco took Hicks and Billy Wilson; understandable not to want to lose Hicks after Papa takes Hanks (although Tim McDonald is a reasonable substitute) I'd rank Wilson below both Washington and Clark, so he wouldn't be my choice at WR (and Maiocco doesn't need to pick a WR for the same reason Papa doesn't need to pick an OT)

34-35. Papa takes the tackles, Fahnhorst and Wallace.  So, there's that - they'd be my two tackles...after Harris Barton, who apparently won't get drafted which wouldn't be the way I'd go but isn't inhrently wrong.

36-37. Maiocco takes Dwight and Matt Hazeltine; again, he doesn't need to get a receiver here, but Dwight's defensible (that means Gene Washington won't get taken...that's defensible, but I'd have gone Washington and not Wilson). Hazeltine's the top LB left on the board (why is no one taking Justin Smith?)

38-39. Papa goes kickers.  Lee and Wersching.  So, they are the top P/K in franchise history, but tough to pick them when there are still football players on the board.

40-41. Maiocco goes DeForest Buckner and Gore.  Buckner apparently is Maiocco's WC selection and he takes Gore ahead of McElhenny; having taken Perry I'd have gone the other way there, but I get it.  Buckner...Buckner was good, but it sort of looks like they're going to leave Justin Smith on the floor which just flat feels like oversight.

42-43. Papa takes McElhenny and Frank Nunley. We're near the end, so even though he doesn't need to take the RB until the end of the draft at this point, I won't bang him too hard for the McElhenny pick.  Nunley...yeah, not the way I would have gone with Ken Norton on the board if you need that inside linebacker.

44-45. Maiocco takes Blue and Howard Mudd - I like Quillan more than Blue, but that could go either way when looking to take a center.  I like Ray Brown more than Mudd; I might go Larry Allen here, take him as my WC and take goddamn Justin Smith in that spot where he took Buckner. Yeah, that is what I'd advocate.  Larry Allen in this spot.

46-47. Papa takes George Seifert and Carlton Williamson.  Tim McDonald for sure instead of Williamson...coach is a hard call; Seifert obviously is the only Niner coach not named Walsh to win Super Bowls, so it's defensible.  I like George running my defense, not so much sure as the top guy.  I don't know who I'd take here - if I could take any coach and wasn't limited to an HC, I think I'd take either Mike Holmgren or Mike Shanahan.

48-49. Maiocco takes his kickers, Joe Nedney and Tommy Davis; that's probably right - Davis is for sure right as the best non Andy Lee punter in franchise history...yeah, neither Gould nor Phil Dawson played 5 years and you wouldn't use your WC on a kicker when Nedney is just as good..so Nedney's the call at PK.

50-51. Papa takes Brent Jones, who is the right answer at TE, and Abe Woodson, who is the right answer as a kick returner.

52. Maiocco takes Kermit Alexander.  I like Don Griffin in this spot as the last corner taken. Or, Richard Sherman to combat that Deion Sanders pick Papa made.

So - top players not taken:

-Brodie.  Understandable, obviously.
-Washington.  I prefer him to Wilson, but it's not unreasonable to go the other way.
-Barton, I'd take him over both Fahnhorst and Wallace (and maybe Staley) but it's not a crime, Len Rohde is in this mix also
-Frankie Albert, see Brodie.
-Justin Smith, really a bizarre omission.
-Tittle, see the other QB left out.
-Michael Carter - Buckner was better at the top end but Carter had a better Niner career
-Norton, over Nunley for sure.
