128 Team All Time Baseball Tournament - Region 8

Saturday, May 30, 2020

Region 7 is here.

Check out Part 1 to see what this is.

We've hit the last Region to complete the full 128 field; the 128 greatest baseball teams ever assembled.

8. 1910 World Champion Philadelphia A's
v.
121. 2002 NL Champion San Francisco Giants

-The Yankees, understandably, have more representatives in the field than any other organization - second most is the A's.  This is the only San Francisco Giants club in the tournament.

57. 1931 World Champion St Louis Cardinals
v.
72. 1951 World Champion New York Yankees

-The Giants have the most representatives in the field from the NL - tied for second is St Louis.  DiMaggio and a 19 year old Mantle are on this Yankee club.

25. 1908 World Champion Chicago Cubs
v.
104. 1955 World Champion Brooklyn Dodgers

-Tied with Cards for second most NL entries?  The Cubs and Dodgers.

40. 1995 AL Champion Cleveland Indians
v.
89. 1923 World Champion New York Yankees

-104 wins and a World Series loss to the Braves for this Cleveland team; 28 year old Babe Ruth has a pornographic 239 OPS+

9. 1905 World Champion New York Giants
v.
120. 2019 AL East New York Yankees

-The matchup featuring the largest expanse of time between the opponents (at least, right now...) over a 110 years separate these two New York clubs.

56. 2001 AL West Champion Seattle Mariners
v.
73. 1913 World Champion Philadelphia Athletics

-The Mariners won 116 games but couldn't get by the Yankees in the ALCS; 5 Hall of Famers on this A's squad.

24. 1938 World Champion New York Yankees
v.
105. 1957 World Champion Milwaukee Braves

-It really is entirely a coincidence that the Yankees make up exactly 1/4 of the field; this is #32; they meet Hank Aaron's only team in the tournament.

41. 2019 NL West Champion Los Angeles Dodgers
v.
88. 1903 World Champion Boston Red Sox

-And another coincidence - the first World Champions take on a team from last season when the Boston Americans take on the Dodgers.

That wraps up the preview - we kick off tomorrow with the first two series from Region One.
