What is this all about?

Yesterday

Here are all the October 5 games in San Francisco Giants history that mattered.

1962 World Series Game Two home vs. Yankees we lost Game One yesterday, we pull even today; Jack Sanford throws a complete game 3 hit shutout, we win 2-0.  The big blow is McCovey's, up 1-0 in the 7th, he homers to right off of Ralph Terry for the final margin of victory. The Yanks never got close, only getting two men as far as second base. We even the Series at 1, Game 3 is in New York.

1971 NLCS Game 3 - we split two at home and now go to Pittsburgh for game 4, we've got Marichal on the mound - and he throws a complete game, because of course he does, gives up 4 hits and 2 earned - and that needs to be enough, but it's not.  Bob Robertson homers in the second to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead, we tie it in the 6th when Richie Hebner throws away a Tito Fuentes bunt allowing Ken Henderson to score (we left the bases loaded when Bob Johnson struck out Al Gallagher). They put two on with 1 out in the bottom half - but Marichal got Stargell and Oliver. With 2 out in the bottom of the 8th they won the game on a Hebner home run. We're a game from elimination.

1987 NL West Champs - the NLCS starts tomorrow.

1989 NLCS Game Two - we beat up on Maddux yesterday to take a one game lead, but the Cubs even it in this one. They get 6 in the first, Rick Reuschel only gets 2 outs and gives up 5 earned runs. Mark Grace and Jerome Walton each finished with 3 hits. We lose 9-5.  Now we head home tied 1-1.

2000 NLDS Game Two - we took game one yesterday, looking to go up 2-0, but an Edgardo 9th inning homer off Felix Rodriguez gave the Mets a 4-1 lead headed to the bottom of the 9th. JT Snow pinch hit a 3 run homer off of Armando Benitez to send the game into extras - but Rodriguez gave it up in the 10th on a 2 out Jay Payton run scoring single (John Franco struck out Barry with the tying run on to end the game).  1-1 and we head to Shea.

2001 - the Dodgers end our season, Barry hits 2 and breaks the single season home run record.

2002 - Game 3 NLDS - we split two at home and now move to Atlanta to face Maddux, 13 years after beating him in the NLCS.  This didn't go as well, with the score tied at 1 in the 6th Jason Schmidt walked the bases loaded and was replaced by Manny Aybar who gave up a 2 run single to Vinny Castilla and a 3 run homer to Keith Lockhart on consecutive pitches.  We lose 10-2 and are a game from elimination.

2010 NL West Champs (postseason starts 10-7)

2012 NL West Champs (postseason starts 10-6)

2014 NLDS up 2-0, Game 3 tomorrow.

2016 Wild Card Game at Mets - it's the knockout game, the same one we won two years ago when Bumgarner beat the Pirates.  Bumgarner's back and he throws a complete game 4 hit shutout.  It's scoreless until the 9th inning (we left them loaded in the 8th) when Conor Gillaspie hits a 3 run homer off Jeurys Familia (who allowed one homer all year). Gillaspie was drafted by the Giants with the 37th pick 8 years prior, got fewer than 50 San Francisco at bats before moving on in 2013, he came back this year and wins the Wild Card game. We didn't get a hit until the 6th.  Bumgarner's postseason scoreless streak reached 23 innings.

See you tomorrow.  Go Giants!
