What is this all about?

Here are all the October 2 games that mattered in San Francisco Giants history.

1962 - we won game 1 of the best 2 of 3 tiebreak against LA, in game 2 we go to LA and the Dodgers even it up. We had a 5-0 lead headed to the bottom of the 6th, but the Dodgers got 7 in that frame, Stu Miller gave up 3 earned in a third of an inning. We got them back in the 8th, tying the score at 7, but with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th, Mike McCormick gave up a walk off sac fly to Ron Fairly and the Dodgers had evened up the series.  It all comes down to tomorrow.

1964 home vs Cubs, we're 3 down with 3 left, chasing the Cards and hosting the Cubs.  We get the opener, Bobby Bolin throws a 3 hit complete game shutout, striking out 13. Mays and Lanier both had 4 hits - St Louis lost, so we're still alive, 2 down, 2 left.

1971 Game One NLCS home vs. Pirates it's our first NL West title, our first playoff appearance since '62, only the second playoff appearance in San Francisco history - the NLCS is best 3 of 5, we get it going right with a 5-4 win.  Gaylord throws a complete game, we were down 2-1 in the 5th when we got to Steve Blass, Tito Fuentes and Willie McCovey both hit 2 run homers, we went up 5-2 and, with the score 5-4 and the tying run on base in the 9th, Gaylord got Clemente and Stargell to end the game. We're up 1-0, 2 games away from the pennant.

1982 the Dodgers put the bullet in our season, we lose 15-2 at the Stick.

1987 NL West Champs (clinched 9-28, postseason starts 10-6)

1989 NL West Champs (clinched 9-27, postseason starts 10-4)

1993 at Los Angeles tied with the Braves, two to play - looking for our third straight win in LA as we try to keep pace - and we get it. 3 Dave Martinez RBI in the 5th and the 7th off of Orel Hershiser gave us a 5-2 lead and we'd win it 5-3.  Will Clark had 4 hits. Rod Beck pitched for the 8th time in 9 games and got a 4 out save, coming in with the bases loaded in the 8th to get Dave Hansen. Atlanta, it will not surprise, also won.  Through 161 games, the Giants and Braves remain tied.

1997 NLDS Giants down to Marlins 2 games to 0 (game 3 October 3)

2000 NL West Champs (postseason starts 10-4)

2001 at Houston, we're 2 out with 6 left as the day begins - 2 out with five left after beating the Astros 4-1. Kirk Rueter pitched into the 7, 1 earned, Calvin Murray broke a 1-1 tie in the 5th with a run scoring single off Shane Reynolds. We win 4-1, so does Arizona.  Still 2 back.

2002 Game One NLDS at Braves, the NLDS is a best of 5, we open in Atlanta and jump all over Tom Glavine, he gives up 10 hits, 6 earned in 5 innings, we march to an 8-5 win. Benito Santiago had 3 hits, Russ Ortiz went 7 with 2 earned, the Braves had the tying run on with 1 out in the 9th, but Robb Nen got Gary Sheffield 6-4-3 to end the game. We're 2 wins from the NLCS.

2003 NLDS Tied at 1, Game 3 Tomorrow

2004 - the Dodgers walk us off, that eliminates us from the West and drops us a game behind Houston for the WC with one day left.

2010 - we lose to the Padres, that cuts our lead in the West over San Diego to 1 (and our WC lead over Atlanta to 1) with one game left in the season.

2012 - NL West Champs (postseason starts 10-6)

2014 - Won Wild Card Game over Pittsburgh (NLDS begins 10-3)

2016 home vs. Dodgers last day of the season, win and we advance to the Wild Card game - we roll, 16 hits, we score 5 runs in the first two innings, Matt Moore goes 8 and gives up only 3 hits, we got 3 hits from Span, Posey, Pagan - it's an easy 7-1 win and we're on to the playoffs (starts 10-5). This was Vin Scully's last game as a big league broadcaster.

See you tomorrow.  Go Giants!
