Forever Giants: 1903 New York Giants(Year 21)

Sunday, November 23, 2014

1902 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season. The parenthetical is a career Giants WAR total with the eventual goal of a top 100 Giants of all time. The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

1903 99-63
C Jack Warner 2.35
1B Dan McGann .6
2B Billy Gilbert .3
SS Charlie Babb 1.1
3B Billy Lauder -.55
LF Sam Mertes 2.65
CF Roger Bresnahan 4.1
RF George Browne 1.3
OF George Van Haltren -1.1 (23.9) Last Season
IF Jack Dunn -.25
C Frank Bowerman .85
SS George Davis -.15 (42.3) Last Season
Uti John McGraw .05
SP Joe McGinnity 9 MVPQ
SP Christy Mathewson 8.65 MVPQ
SP Dummy Taylor .65
SP Jack Cronin .5

-This was the year Ed Delahanty fell off the bridge, he was leaving the Senators in order to play for the Giants.  We could have used the bat.  It's also the year McGinnity started both ends of a double header.  Best Giants team in a half dozen years. Davis and Van Haltren finish; that ends the 19th century; there are no Giants on next year's club who were playing with the team before 1900.
