Wrestlemania XXX Preview

Spoiler Alert: Ted and Robin wind up together after all.

(shuffles papers) Yeah, that’s the wrong note; I’m spread a little thin these days…got it.

Spoiler alert: Daniel Bryan becomes WWE World Heavyweight Champion

They survived some missteps to get here; the long arc with Jennifer Morrison, Bryan's joining the Wyatt Family, Landry killing that guy in season two, but at the end of the night on Sunday, the best North American wrestler of this century will be on top of the largest wrestling promotion in the world.

For at least a couple of months until he puts Batista over.

Let’s go to the card.

WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Randy Orton v. Batista v. ?
Number One Contender: Daniel Bryan v. HHH

-When we last left Randy Orton was the champion; having won his 2013 feud with Bryan and unifying the belts at year’s end by beating Cena.  He was to match up with the conquering hero Batista, making his return after several years away, doing mixed martial arts and getting plastic surgery.  Funny thing happened – Batista’s terrible, and his babyface Royal Rumble win got booed out of the building.  Most analysts gave him a “wrong place, wrong time” pass, but the truth is Batista was almost never particularly good, owing his career to the McMahon-Helmsley size queen preference of muscle heads who look good standing perfectly still for minutes at a time.  He essentially replaced Bryan in the main event spot on the card, as Bryan was headed to a program with Sheamus after losing clean to Bray Wyatt at the Rumble.

Fortunately, the boos for Batista weren’t shrugged off the way they are for Cena and instead viewed as manifestation of criticism for the creative direction of the company – and Bryan was shoehorned back into this picture.

That was aided by the departure of CM Punk who left more money than I’ve made in my entire life on the table by leaving the promotion right before Wrestlemania.  He’s yet to comment, so it’s unclear if this was a negotiating strategy, or if he might return with some type of significant deal with TNA or in what is assumed to be a new Jeff Jarrett/Toby Keith promotion. It sort of appears that none of the above is going to be the right answer – and instead it was Punk joining the WWE crowd in chanting boring at Triple H, a program against whom he apparently found so interminable he’d rather burn the checks than sit through it.  The rest of us can fast forward through Hunter and Stephanie, but if you’re standing next to them in the ring, that becomes more challenging.

So, it’s Bryan who finds his way into both matches; the winner of Bryan/Hunter will go on to wrestle in the main event.  Both matches are as good as Bryan can make them given whatever time is allotted for each.

You’d anticipate good things and, as mentioned, Bryan leaves Wrestlemania as the champion.

(Edit, you got what you expected.  A 4 star match against Hunter and 3 3/4 for the main event.  Ideally, Bryan would have beaten Orton, since he was the champion.  I recognize it leaves open Orton's claim for not really losing the belt, but I'm not sure, given the arc of the story, that opening is worth taking away that portion of the payoff.

Undertaker v. Brock Lesnar

-A centerpiece in recent Wrestlemanias has been Undertaker’s extending his streak, which is now some number in the 20s and 0.  They’ve all been good matches, all well worth watching, if a little overrated given the preference of modern wrestling critics to equate famous guys making faces with match quality.

Everything Brock Lesnar has done in this WWE run has been great; he’s the best match or close to it every time he works on PPV.  Undertaker wrestles so infrequently that its really challenging to guess match quality, and obviously given Brock’s size this requires a different story told than in recent years – but my anticipation is four stars, and given Bryan’s involvement in those other two matches, we could really be looking at all time great Wrestlemania.

The build for this hasn’t worked – WWE is married to everyone selling the spooky when it comes to the Undertaker and it slices away Brock’s legitimacy, which is the strength of his character – but it shouldn’t matter come match time.  It should go without saying that Undertaker wins.  I don’t know that they ever end the streak – there’s apparently a really high regard for Roman Reigns as a potential future standardbearer, and of the current roster he might be a good futures bet if you can get someone to take that action.

(Edit - well, this was unexpected.  So, let's talk about the build for a second.  Why did Undertaker, assuming this reading is accurate, want to lose the streak to Brock (seems unlikely that was a decision forced upon him)?  It's because he's a legitimate fighter and the Undertaker saw losing to him as worthwhile.  Why wasn't that the build?  Recall the Brock/Cena build - Brock was a legitimate fighter and Cena was bullshit.

That should have been the build here - Brock doesn't need to be the scared heel; he needs to be the UFC Champion.  This old man with all his smoke and mirrors can't beat me.

Maybe you can't do that once you've had him go under both Hunter and Cena - this result makes the decision to ever have Brock lose before this match make absolutely no sense.  If Brock Lesnar is unbeaten in this run - and he faces the Streak, and then goes over - he comes out of this as an absolute monster.  Now - I don't know what they have with him.

This wasn't very good; part of it is the size issue, they couldn't tell any of the recent years stories, and part of it was Undertaker's retiring (one assumes) for a reason; he didn't look good in this match and maybe has nothing left.)

Yawn Cena v. Bray Wyatt
-The Wyatt Family is a terrific act; 2/3 of it is good in the ring and Bray’s promos would have been at home in True Detective.  Had he said Cena was the Yellow King as part of the build it wouldn’t have been a surprise.

That hasn’t happened, but like all Wyatt builds this has been good and predicated on a combination of atmospherics and Bray’s verbal ability.  Cena’s been fine as he usually is when using his serious voice, and you’d expect this will also be a good match, with the heel Wyatt getting the large majority of the fan support from the Mania crowd.  A Wyatt win makes sense, if Cena’s not at the top of the card his generating a future rematch where he can win at the top of the card is a pretty easy booking approach.

Yes, I’m saying all 4 of these matches will be good, yes.

(3 1/4 - this was weird and killed the crowd; it didn't come back until during the main event.  Wyatt didn't really wrestle a match that would have allowed the crowd to cheer him; Cena is massively disliked. The story of Bray pulling the evil out of Cena but then Cena beats him without really getting too violent is a weird one to tell. I didn't hate the match, but it was a little underwhelming.)

The Shield v. Kane and the New Age Outlaws
WWF Tag Titles: Usos v. Real Americans v. Ryback/Curtis Axel v. Los Matadores

-Two tag matches on the night, although the tag title has been shifted to the pre-show.  The Shield has felt like a star act from their first appearance; it’s a credit to the creative team that two tag acts like the Wyatts and the Shield could both successfully be developed simultaneously.  They’ve been trying to work their way to a Reigns face turn, sewing dissension for months, but probably wisely decided to take a more circuitous route – turning the entire group babyface in this program against the long over the hill Outlaws and Kane.  The Shield is so good that, if the match gets 10 minutes, it might make 3 stars.

It’s possible the tag title match reaches that level as well; a discount version of the Shield breakup story was being told about the Real Americans; Cesaro is one of the best wrestlers in the promotion and gets over with the crowd every time he gets an ounce of daylight.  He looked to be turning and still may here, but they’ve backed away from that direction recently.  The Usos are also good workers; this match would be one to really look forward if it were on the main show and just those two teams.  Adding two more teams and moving it to the pre-show probably doesn’t give it enough time to become cohesive.

Shield wins.  Let’s say Real Americans do as well.

(Shield won in a squash, Usos kept and they turned Cesaro)

Andre the Giant Battle Royal
Vickie Guerrero Divas Invitational

-They round out the card with two matches designed to get the balance of the crew onto the show.  So if you wondered where Dolph Ziggler and Rey Mysterio were – they’re here.  These are throwaways largely, but the battle royal is especially useful for this endeavor.

(Cesaro won the battle royal, AJ kept the women's title)

That’s the show – a great, all time match seems unlikely, but we’re looking at the possibility of multiple matches that are really good, and there hasn’t been a Wrestlemania moment in ten years I’ve looked forward to as much as Bryan winning the title.

(It was good, had a four star match, a big title change, and Brock continued a career of being in really weird Mania matches)

I'm not old enough to have seen every Super Bowl, but I was 14 for the first Wrestlemania - the build for which was right in my not yet critical of corporate homogeneity brain.

I've seen every Wrestlemania match multiple times.  This is, I believe, all of them.  Ranked in order of quality, for whatever reason.  Match times are rounded; the Wrestlemania at which the match took place is in parentheses; there's a star rating for every *** and up match.
