#37 is here.

#36 December 15, 1997 Simply the Best

Joe Montana returned to Candlestick for the first time since being traded to the Chiefs; his number retired at halftime of a Monday night game against the Broncos.

The Niners were 12-2, with the top ranked defense in the NFL. Denver was 11-3, on their way to a Super Bowl Championship.

Jerry Rice returned from a torn ACL after only three and a half months to play in this game - scoring in the second quarter with the Niners down 10-0, injuring himself on the play which caused him to miss the rest of the season.

John Elway, as was his legacy for much of his career, completely collapsed in the moment, 16-41, 150 yards, 2 interceptions with one returned for a score (Merton Hanks, Kevin Greene also returned a fumble for a touchdown).

The Niners won 34-17, finishing the season with a perfect record for the first time in Candlestick history.
