Dodgers-8 Yankees 4, so the Yankees have the better seed giving them home field advantage but the Dodgers have a substantial WAR advantage.  The Yankees do have the best player, a 20 year old Mickey Mantle, but its close.  I'll say the Dodgers are the favorites to advance here.

GAME ONE

1st:  Allie Reynolds gets the ball for the Yankees; 35 year old RH, 20-8, 2.06 -- this is Reynolds' 11th big league season; the first five were in Cleveland, without any real distinction (he led the league in Ks once and in BBs once) and right after the '46 season, the Indians dealt him to New York for future Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Gordon. Reynolds' peak has been the last two seasons, 3rd in the MVP race in '51, second this year. At 35 years old, this is easily the best version of Allie Reynolds on the mound right now.  He gives up a one out walk to Cody Bellinger and a two out walk to Chris Taylor - but LA doesn't score.
1st: The Dodgers do not have any Hall of Famers, but that's just a function of time, Clayton Kershaw will be inducted one day - he is a 29 year old lefty, 18-4, 2.31, he has been in the Dodger rotation since he was 20 years old.  Kershaw won the Cy Young in 2011, finished second in 2012, won in 2013 and 2014, finished 3rd in 2015, 5th in 2016 and finished 2nd this year.  1-2-3

2nd: Yasmani Grandal is platooning at catcher for LA - he walks. Grandal came over to LA from the Padres prior to the 2015 season in a deal for Matt Kemp; he'll spend 4 years as the Dodgers catcher before heading to the Brewers as a free agent; after an out, Reynolds walks Chase Utley - that's four walks in two innings, but no runs.
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: After two out, Chris Taylor doubles for the game's first hit. Taylor was a bench piece for the Mariners who they sent to LA during the 2016 season for Zach Lee - he split his time this year in center, in left, at short - the Dodgers really valuing positional flexibility. He's left stranded at third.
3rd: 1-2-3, 9 up, 9 down.

4th: Joc Pederson walks, that's the fifth walk of the game allowed by Reynolds. Pederson's platooning in this series, LA has a couple of center fielders sitting on the bench ready to get a start against a LH. He finished 6th in the NL Rookie of the Year in 2015, he had his lightest year with the bat to date this year, hitting .212. Two outs later Corey Seager walks - six walks in 4 innings, but still scoreless.
4th: After two outs, Joe Collins singles. Johnny Mize is a Hall of Famer, despite being 39 years old he still had a good year with the bat - but he can't get into the lineup for this series, blocked by Collins. He came up in '48 and this is his first year as a full time player and the best year he'll ever have with the bat. He'll play a decade, all with the Yanks. That's all.

5th: Justin Turner walks - the 7th Dodger base on balls. With his 150 OPS+, Turner is the best bat on this Dodger club. He had five unnoticed seasons when he signed as a free agent with the Dodgers prior to the 2014 season, completely retooled his swing and had an instant, dramatic improvement - bumping up 55 OPS+ points from his previous high. He finished 9th in the ML MVP in '16 and 8th this year. Two outs later Grandal singles and then Pederson drives both home with a double to score the game's first runs.  Utley is intentionally walked to bring Kershaw to the plate - he singles home Pederson and LA has opened up a lead Dodgers 3 Yankees 0
5th: Gil McDougald singles, he's a career Yankee - was Rookie of the Year last year, in '51 - and made his first All Star team this year. he'll have two top 10 MVP finishes in '56 and '57 and be out of the league after the 1960 season. Phil Rizzuto doubles - and the Yankees score their first run on a Billy Martin groundout. Casey goes to his bench right now and brings on Charlie Silvera, the backup catcher, to hit for Reynolds - he hits a sac fly that scores Rizzuto; Gene Woodling singles, it ends there, but the Yankees are back in it - Dodgers 3 Yankees 2

6th: The Yankees do not have nearly, not nearly the bullpen the Dodgers have - 34 year old RH Johnny Sain gets the call here. He won 11 games for the Yankees with a 3.46 ERA. Sain shares a birthday with me and Rizzuto. He broke in with the Braves in '42 and then missed 3 years for the War. He came back in '46 and had top five MVP finishes in both '46 and '48 as half of the Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain Boston duo.  He fell off the table in '49 and the Yankees got him during the '51 season for Lew Burdette. Next year, he'll bounce back with an All Star campaign in the Yankees rotation and pitch until '55. He gives up a one out Turner single, then a two out Puig single, that's all.
6th: Hank Bauer, the MVP of the Yankees round 1 win, singles with 2 out. Bauer came up with the Yankees in '48, he's in his prime right now, this year was his first AL All Star team, he'll make the team the next two years and his only top 10 MVP finish will be '55. He'll be a Yankee through '59. Kershaw holds here and LA still has a one run lead heading to the 7th.

7th: Sain hits Pederson, that's it.
7th: Phil Rizzuto hits his second double - we saw Rizzuto in Region one with the '41 Yankees, but not the '43 Yankees because he's gone for the War - he came back in '46 and will be a Yankee the rest of his career, retiring after the '56 season. He advances to third - but Kershaw strands him there.

8th: Cody Bellinger is the NL Rookie of the Year - 21 years old - two years from now he'll win the MVP.  Right now he hits a first pitch homer - a real titanic blow to right center to extend the Dodger lead. Taylor walks after an out and then Puig singles. Sain keeps LA there. Dodgers 4 Yankees 2
8th: LA has a deep pen; 31 year old RH Josh Fields gets the call with a 2.84 ERA. He came over to LA last year in a deal with Houston for Yordan Alvarez, 1-2-3

9th: Corey Seager singles with 2 out, Seager was Rookie of the Year last year and through 2020 remains the Dodgers primary shortstop - Bellinger doubles, that's going to score Seager and it looks like LA is going to get game one. Dodgers 5 Yankees 2
9th: 29 year old RH Kenley Jansen comes on.  41 saves and a 1.32 ERA.  A real hammer. He broke in in 2010 and has been the Dodger closer since 2012. He was 5th in the Cy Young race this year, the best of his career.

Bauer is first - K.
McDougald is next - he reaches by error.
Rizzuto strikes out.  Two away.
Billy Martin goes down 0-2, but fists a single into left.  2 on.  2 out.  Johnny Mize comes on to hit.

The Big Cat is now 39; he broke in with the Cards back in '36, had 4 top 10 MVP finishes through '42 and then missed 3 years for the War. He led the league in homers with the Giants in '47 and '48. The Yankees bought him during the '49 season. Next year will be his last.

And Mize comes through with a base hit - that's going to score a run and it's 5-3.

Gene Woodling is next - runners at the corners -- two out -- and Jansen strikes him out on 3 pitches.

GAME TWO

1st: Tasked with evening this up is a 34 year old lefty, Eddie Lopat, 10-5, 2.53, Lopat came up in '44 with the White Sox, prior to the '48 season the Yankees got him in a deal that included Eddie Robinson, Lopat's only All Star appearance was '51, the year after this, '53, he'll lead the league in ERA and retire as an Oriole in '55. Taylor singles to open the game, after two outs Austin Barnes, catching today against the lefty, doubles him home.  Dodgers 1 Yankees 0

1st: LA throws another lefty at the Yanks, 26 year old Alex Wood, 16-3, 2.72, Wood broke in with the Braves in '13, was dealt to LA at the Break in '15 in a massive 3 team deal that included 11 other players. This is Wood's career season, he finished 9th in the Cy Young race. He gives up a leadoff single to Bauer, gets two outs and then gives up a 2 run bomb to Joe Collins - that gets this Yankee Stadium crowd alive.  Dodgers 1 Yankees 2

2nd: Kike Hernandez is in center today against the lefty and he walks with one out, he came up with the Astros in '14, wound up in Miami before the end of that season and onto LA before the start of the next, he and Barnes came over together with Dee Gordon, Dan Haren and Miguel Rojas headed the other way. Hernandez plays all over the diamond for LA. The Dodgers do not score.

2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: Taylor singles and Justin Turner walks, and out later he walks Barnes to load the bases. This is Barnes career year with the bat pretty easily - Lopat gets the second out - but then a Seager base hit ties the score and a Hernandez walk puts the Dodgers again out in front. Logan Forsythe is the third Dodger playing today against a lefty - and he also comes through here, with a single that scores two runs. Dodgers 5 Yankees 2

3rd: Bauer singles with one out, after the second, Gene Woodling walks. Woodling came up with Cleveland when he was 20 - served two years in the military - went to the Pirates and then in '49, was bought by the Yankees from the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League. Woodling will lead the AL in OBP in '53, and be in the bigs until 1962 when he retires as a Met.  The Yanks don't score.

4th: 1-2-3

4th: Yogi singles.  Yogi was 21 when he came up in '46, finished third in the AL MVP race in '50, won it in '51, 4th this year, 2nd in '53, won in both '54 and '55, 2nd in '56 -- Yogi is an AL All Star 15 consecutive seasons.  McDougald singles. After an out, Martin singles and the Yankees have them loaded - but they do not score.

5th: Barnes walks, an out later Seager singles, and then Hernandez walks and now it's LA who has loaded the bases -- but the Dodgers also do not score.

5th: Woodling hits a one out double -- but nothing else.

6th: Taylor singles, an out later Bellinger singles, Lopat keeps the Dodgers from scoring again.

6th: McDougald walks - but Wood shuts it down -- the Dodgers are just three innings away from taking a 2-0 lead.

7th: Seager walks/Hernandez singles-  that ends Lopat's day, Johnny Sain enters for the Yanks, he gets the next 3 to keep New York within shouting distance.

7th: As was the case in game 1-, the Dodgers turn to Josh Fields, he gets the first two, but then gives up a Gene Woodling homer and the Yankees get a little closer.  Dodgers 5 Yankees 3

8th: Barnes singles with two out, that's all. Lopat keeps the Yankees in this one.

8th: After an out, McDougald singles - that's going to bring the tying run to the plate and Dave Roberts to the mound for a pitching change; 29 year old RH Pedro Baez had a 2.95 ERA, and he comes on now -- and he gers through it.

9th: Puig reaches on an error and then Seager and Hernandez walk back to back -- bases loaded and nobody out for the Dodgers, they're a hit away from icing this game - Puig scores on a Forsythe groundout, and then Seager scores on a Joc Pederson sac fly. That sure looks like plenty.  Dodgers 7 Yankees 3

9th: 32 year old RH Brandon Morrow had a 2.06 ERA and he's on to end this, 1-2-3

GAME THREE

1st: Third straight Dodger lefty is Rich Hill, 37 years old, 12-8, 3.32, Hill broke in with the Cubs in '05, it was during his 12th season, now with the A's, that he was sent to LA at the 2016 deadline. with Josh Reddick for Jharel Cotton and Frankie Montas. He moves into the Dodger rotation where he stays until leaving for the Twins as a 40 year old in 2020. 1-2-3
1st: Vic Raschi is a 33 year old RH and he stands on the Dodger Stadium mound; 16-6, 2.78, he was a 27 year old rookie with the Yankees in '46, led the league in starts in '49, had top 10 MVP finishes in '50 and '51, his last All Star game was this year, and '53 will be the last effective year of his career.  1-2-3

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: The first hit of the game is Phil Rizzuto's, a single - and the first run of the game is scored by Rizzuto on an RBI double by Billy Martin.  Martin's already advanced to the next round, as the '77 Yankees manager. He came up as a 22 year old two years ago, this is his first season as a starter; he'll make one All Star team, in '56, which was his last full season as a Yankee. His last year in the bigs is '61 in Minnesota. Hill gets two outs and then, despite his still being hitless, the Dodgers intentionally walk Mantle - and it works. Yankees 1 Dodgers 0
3rd: Raschi hits Pederson - could be inadvertant, or could be a message from a tough minded Yankee club; he retires the next 3.

4th: Collins walks, nothing else.
4th: 1-2-3, Raschi has yet to allow a hit

5th: After an out, Martin singles, that's all.
5th: Yasiel Puig singles, LA's first hit. Puig was 2nd in the NL Rookie of the Year in 2012, outside of injury he's been the Dodger right fielder since, next year will be his last in Dodger blue. Grandal walks, Raschi gets an out - but then Chase Utley singles home the tying run. Yankees 1 Dodgers 1

6th: Woodling walks with one out, that's all.
6th: 1-2-3

7th: 1-2-3, Hill has allowed 3 hits.
7th: Taylor walks - two outs later Pederson is hit again. That's going to end his series, Kike Hernandez enters to run for him - Raschi's only allowed 2 hits and we go to the 8th.

8th: For the third straight day, Josh Fields is on in relief; 1-2-3
8th: Andrew Toles hits in the pitchers spot and walks, Corey Seager singles and there's a stir here in Los Angeles - the go ahead run is at second; Raschi bears down and gets the next 3.

9th: Pedro Baez is on for the second straight game; 1-2-3
9th: 1-2-3; Raschi has thrown all 9, given up just 3 hits.

10th: After an out - Rizzuto triples -- go ahead run now 90 feet away for the Yankees; and they get it on a Billy Martin double - big, big game for Martin and the Yankees take the lead. Brandon Morrow replaces Baez - and he gets through it.  Yankees 2 Dodgers 1
10th: Johnny Sain is on for the third straight game - he needs 3 outs.

Chase Utley is first - he grounds to Martin.  One down.
Logan Forsythe is next, hitting for the pitcher - he grounds to Rizzuto, two down.
Corey Seager grounds to Rizzuto - onto first -- and the Yankees are a game away from tying the series.

GAME FOUR

1st: Clayton Kershaw won Game 1 and he returns here looking to end the series.  1-2-3

1st: His opponent is Allie Reynolds - he gives up a first pitch single to Corey Seager - he's reached 8 times now in the series; it ends there.

2nd: 1-2-3

2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: Martin is the first Yankee baserunner, walking with one out - it ends there.

3rd: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Reynolds.

4th: 1-2-3, Kershaw has not allowed a hit

4th: 1-2-3, 11 straight for Reynolds

5th: After two outs, the first Yankee hit is Rizzuto's, a double - Kershaw intentionally walks Martin to pitch to Reynolds -- who he also walks to load the bases -- but that's all.

5th: Taylor walks and then steals second - Dodgers have a runner in scoring position with no one out - Reynolds gets two - intentionally walks Utley to pitch to Kershaw - and gets him.  We head to the 6 th in a taut Game 5.

6th: Mickey Mantle singles.  His first hit of the series.  Mantle's just 20, the youngest player in the series, he came up last year and that year and 1966 will be the only years of his career he didn't make the All Star team. He finished 3rd in the AL MVP race this year, will win in '56, '57 and '62. Gene Woodling walks and the Yankees are in business - but Kershaw holds the line.

6th: 1-2-3, Reynolds has given up one hit.

7th: Rizzuto reaches on a one out error and Martin walks, Charlie Silvera hits for Reynolds - big decision there by Casey - Kershaw gets him to ground out to the right side and everyone moves up a base - and that matters immediately when Bauer singles to right field to score both runners.  The Yankees have taken the lead - Mantle singles again - it ends there, but the Yankees are the first team to dent the scoreboard, Yankees 2 Dodgers 0

7th: For the 4th straight game - here comes Johnny Sain.  He gives up a one out Taylor double, and then a run scoring single to Puig.  The Yankees bullpen is their weakest area and they have to find 8 more outs.  Berra guns Puig down trying to steal second - with two out now, Hernandez walks and Utley doubles.

So - Yankees up a run.  2 out.  2 men in scoring position - pitchers spot up and Andrew Toles comes to the plate.  Casey counters with a 31 year old RH Bobby Hogue with a 5.32 ERA.  Toles singles sharply to score the tying run.  That's where it ends - but it's all tied up.  Yankees 2 Dodgers 2

8th: For the 4th straight game, the Dodgers turn to Josh Fields - he gives up a one out single to Yogi - but that's it.  Tough to win this battle of the bullpens if you're the Yankees.

8th: 1-2-3, nice inning for Hogue.

9th: Fields gets two - but then gives up a single to Bauer and that will bring Mickey Mantle to the plate.  The Dodgers counter with Pedro Baez.

So - here we are.  2-2, man on.  9th inning, 2 out.  Yankees need this game to force a Game 5.

And Baez strikes Mantle out.

9th: 25 year old RH Jim McDonald enters, hes got a 3.50 ERA - he walks Taylor on four pitches and that's the possible winning run - he gets one - and then Hernandez lines one to right - Taylor was running on the pitch -- it's into the RF corner - Taylor is going to round third -- Bauer hits Martin - the relay home ---

Safe.

GAME ONE

1st: Region 2 is underway with 27 year old lefty Gene Bearden 20-7, 2.43. Bearden was 2nd in the AL Rookie of the Year and he'll never have another year like this in a 7 year big league career. He gives up a 2 out single to Orlando Cepeda, that's all.
1st: 29 year old RH Dick Hughes was the MVP of the Cardinals upset of the 1927 Yankees in Round 1, 16-6, 2.67, he was 2nd in NL Rookie of the Year this year and next year is the end of his career. He gives up a first pitch single to Larry Doby, that's all.

2nd: Roger Maris doubles; Maris is 32 now, he won back to back AL MVP Awards in '60 and '61, of course breaking the single season home run record. This is his first season in St Louis, the Yankees traded him for Charley Smith and next year is his last season in baseball. Julian Javier follows with a single and that scores the game's first run.  Hughes walks two outs later and that's all. Cardinals 1 Indians 0
2nd: Eddie Robinson draws a one out walk, Robinson broke in in '42, missed 3 years for the War, this is is third year back and his last year in Cleveland, the Indians are going to send him to the Senators for Mickey Vernon and Early Wynn. That's all.

3rd: Curt Flood singles. Flood broke in with the Reds at 18, the Cards got him in '58, he won his 5th straight Gold Glove this year, which was also his best year with the bat and next year he'll finish 4th for the MVP. That's all for the inning.
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Joe Gordon singles, we just saw him in Region 1 with the Yankees, he came to Cleveland last year for Allie Reynolds, finished 7th in the AL MVP last year, then finished 6th this year, really his last top level season. And then Ken Keltner puts the Tribe in front with a 2 run homer. Dale Mitchell singles, the inning ends Cardinals 1 Indians 2

5th: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Bearden.
5th: Jim Hegan homers to lead off the inning, he broke in in '41, missed the same 3 years for the WAR that we've seen other miss, came back to the Indians in '46 and will make 5 AL All Star teams right in this stretch of his career. He'll be in the bigs until 1960. Cardinals 1 Indians 3

6th: Cepeda singles, Cepeda came up as  20 year old with the first ever San Francisco Giants team in '58 and won the Rookie of the Year. He made the next 6 NL All Star teams, the Giants traded him to St Louis early in the '66 season for Ray Sadecki (this was a bad decision) and he won the NL MVP this year.  That's all.  Cards need to start hitting the ball.
6th: 1-2-3

7th: Julian Javier singles, he came up in '60, slid into the lineup as the Cardinal second baseman and that's where he's remained. He finished 9th as the NL MVP this year, that's all for St Louis - Bearden just hasn't been in trouble since the 2nd.
7th: The Cards turn to 23 year old RH Ron Willis with a 2.67 ERA, 1-2-3

8th: Bobby Tolan comes off the bench to hit for the pitcher and he walks, Tolan came up at 19 years old in '65, at the end of the '68 season he's sent with Wayne Granger to the Reds for Vada Pinson. Lou Brock then singles to send Tolan to third and the Cards have some action. Flood grounds out and it scores a run, after the second out Tim McCarver walks -- and then Maris triples -- it clears the bases and the Cardinals have struck - scored 3 runs to take the lead here in the top of the 8th. 28 year old RH Steve Gromek had a 2,84 ERA in 130 IP and he comes on now to end the inning Cardinals 4 Indians 3
8th: 31 year old lefty Al Jackson comes on for the Cards, 9 wins and a 3.95 ERA, 1-2-3

9th: 30 year old Ed Klieman comes on to try to keep the Indians in this one, he hits Mike Shannon, but that's all -- we go to the bottom of the 9th.
9th: 30 year old lefty Joe Hoerner has 14 saves and a 2.59 ERA and he comes on looking to close this out -

Joe Gordon is first - he grounds to short.
Ken Keltner is next - he pops up to first.
And Dale Mitchell hits a shot deep to right -- but Maris gathers it and the Cardinals have stolen game one.

GAME TWO

1st: Indians dropped Game 1 and turn to RH Bob Lemon to get the split. 20-14, 2.82. Lemon's 27, he broke in two years go after 3 years in the military. This was the first of 7 straight seasons on the AL All Star team. He led the league with 10 shutouts and finished 5th in the AL MVP race. He'll spend his entire career in Cleveland, leading the league in wins three times. 1-2-3
1st: Lemon's opponent is a fellow future Hall of Famer; Lefty Steve Carlton is 22, 14-9, 2.98, he came up two years prior, will make 3 NL All Star teams in St Louis and then head to Philadelphia in '72 where he will win 4 Cy Young Awards as a Phillie (Cards dealt him for Rick Wise). He gives up a Keltner base hit with two out, that's all.

2nd: Curt Flood singles with one out, nothing else.
2nd: Allie Clark walks and he will come all the way around to score on a Dale Mitchell double. Mitchell came up in '46, he'll spend all but the last 19 games of his career with the Indians. After the first out, he scores on an Eddie Robinson single. Cards 0 Indians 2

3rd: 1-2-3
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: After an out, Cepeda singles and Maris gets hit - but Lemon keeps them off the board.
4th: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Carlton.

5th: Dal Maxvill singles with one out, he's been with the club for 5 years, last year was his first as a starter; he'll win the only Gold Glove of his career next year, which is also the best year he'll ever have with the bat (probably not a coincidence). He's left standing at second.
5th: 1-2-3, 11 straight for Carlton

6th: After an out, Cepeda reaches by error and Maris walks, still - nothing for St Louis.
6th: 1-2-3, 14 straight for Carlton - we're getting what we wanted out of this Hall of Fame matchup, both clubs with just 3 hits.

7th: 1-2-3, still just 3 hits allowed by Lemon
7th: Hegan singles with one out, and after the second out, Lemon singles. Boudreau then walks to load the bases - and Joe Gordon singles home two runs - that might have evened up this series.  Cards 0 Indians 4

8th: 1-2-3, Lemon is cruising.
8th: Ron Willis pitched in game 1 and he's back, after he out he gives up back to back singles to Clark/Mitchell and then Hegan/Robinson/Lemon rip off 3 more singles, each plating a run. Schoendienst is out to the mound, he will bring in 30 year old RH Jack Lamabe, he gets an out then walks Gordon, that's it - but this one is over.  Cardinals 0 Indians 7

GAME THREE

1st: We got a fun matchup here in an important game as the series shifts to St Louis all tied at a game apiece.  The Cards send Bob Gibson to the mound; 31 years old, 13-7, 2.98. Gibson's a career Cardinal - up in '59, he's a year away from his historical '68 season when he has a 1.12 ERA. He'll win that Cy Young and also again in '70. He retires after the '75 season. Lou Boudreau doubles with one out, but that's it.
1st: Gibson matches up against Bob Feller.  29 years old, 19-15, 3.56 - he's basically Gibson from a prior generation - up at the age of 17, 3 consecutive top 5 AL MVP finishes from '39-41 and then he was off to the War for three years. He led the league in wins in '46 and '47 and here we are in '48. His last year is '56; each season spent in Cleveland. He gets one, then Tim McCarver singles. McCarver comes all the way around to score on a Cepeda triple - and then Cepeda scores on a Maris base hit. Flood then walks - it ends there, Indians 0 Cardinals 2

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Lou Brock broke in with the Cubs in '61, sent to the Cards for Ernie Broglio in '64 - he finishes 7th in the NL MVP race this year, 6th next year, 6th again in '73 and then second in '74 when he stole 118 bases at the age of 35.  He walks here with two out and steals second, but that's all.

3rd: Jim Hegan singles and two outs later Lou Boudreau singles; Boudreau came up a decade ago at the age of 20, he finished 5th in the AL MVP race in '40, the first of 5 straight years he was on the All Star team, had 6th straight ars of top 10 MVP finishes prior to '48 - and he won the MVP this year.  He's been managing the Indians since '42. That's all Gibson allows, he has 2 strikeouts.
3rd: Cepeda follows his triple with a double, but Feller bears down.  Feller has 2 strikeouts.

4th: Ken Keltner is the Indian third baseman; up in '37, he took that third base job when he was 21 in '38, 5 straight AL All Star teams to start the decade, then missed a year for the War, back in '46 -- '48 is the best year of his career, with that 146 OPS+. He walks, an out later Clark singles, but it ends here.  3 strikeouts for Gibson.
4th: Mike Shannon is the Cardinal third baseman; up in '62, he's been the St Louis RF the past few years, but moved to the hot corner this season - next year he'll finish 7th in the NL MVP and retire after the '70 season. He hits Feller's first pitch of the inning over the left field wall; Feller's going to strike out two, that gives him four, but it's Indians 0 Cardinals 3

5th: Boudreau doubles with 2 out, but nothing results.
5th: McCarver gets hit, Cepeda then hits his second triple of the day -- and on the next pitch Roger Maris bombs a two run shot - that's a 6-0 Cardinal lead and it sure looks like St Louis is about to go up 2 games to 1. Flood is then aboard on an error and Javier singles -- and then Mike Shannon hits his second homer in as many innings - a 3 run shot - it's 9-0 Cards; they are rocking and rolling here at Busch -- that's the end of the day for Feller - and coming on for the Indians is Satchel Paige.  Paige is 41 years old and had a helluva year with a 2.48 ERA - it's his rookie season in MLB; Jackie Robinson having been signed by the Dodgers just the year prior. Paige will make the AL All Star team when he is 46 years old with the Browns and pitch 3 innings for the A's when he is 58 years old. He gets out of the inning, Indians 0 Cardinals 9

6th: 1-2-3, 4 strikeouts for Gibson.
6th: McCarver/Cepeda walk back to back - and after an out Curt Flood hits a 3 run homer - the St Louis Cardinals have just obliterated the Indians today and they will take a 2-1 lead. 32 year old RH Bud Muncrief enters, he gets an out, gives up a Shannon single, and ends the inning.  Indians 0 Cards 12

7th: Hegan doubles with one out, but that's all and a half dozen Gibson Ks.
7th: 1-2-3

8th: Keltner draws a two out walk - he comes all the way around to score on a Dale Mitchell double, Allie Clark then singles Mitchell home and that ends Gibson's day. 30 year old RH Jack Lamabe comes on, he gives up a Robinson single and a run scoring Hegan double and that's 3 plated for the Indians 3 Cardinals 12
8th: RH Steve Gromek enters, 1-2-3

9th: Larry Doby walks - but that's all the Indians muster.

Maris has reached five times, triple/HR
Flood homered today and Shannon homered twice

For the Indians, Hegan has added 5 hits to his game 1 homer

GAME FOUR

1st: Dick Hughes returns for the Cards in Game 4 - can they finish off the Indians?  He gets two - but then Joe Gordon lines a homer to RF and Cleveland jumps on top.  Indians 1 Cardinals 0
1st: Gene Bearden is once again his opponent, he walks Cepeda with 2 out, that's all.

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Javier singles with one out, that's all.

3rd: Larry Doby, the first Black player in the American League, singles with 2 out. He'll make 7 All Star teams with the Indians and in '54 will be 2nd in the AL MVP. That's it for the Indians.
3rd: Hughes singles with one out, that's it.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Cepeda singles - an out later Maris singles - but Cepeda is gunned down by Doby trying to go to third on the play -- just a helluva shot by Doby to cut down the Cards best chance to tie the score.

5th: Allie Clark was platooning to start the series, Boudreau has now just left him in LF - he came up with the Yankees last year, Cleveland acquired him for Red Embree, he'll be a career part time player. Right here - he triples - and then scores on a Robinson groundout. Indians 2 Cardinals 0
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Boudreau singles with one out - that's all.
6th: Cepeda keeps hitting - a two out double, that's all Bearden allows.

7th: 1-2-3, Hughes has only allowed 4 hits.
7th: 1-2-3, Bearden's only allowed 5.  But he's got the shutout.

8th: Ron Willis takes the ball for the Cards - 1-2-3
8th: 1-2-3 -- big, big outing for Bearden in a must win game for the Tribe.

9th: Al Jackson in for St Louis - he gives up back to back 1 out singles for Keltner and Mitchell; and then aftet the second out Eddie Robinson doubles down the RF line - it clears the bases - and that should send this series back to Cleveland.  Indians 4 Cards 0
9th: Flood is first - and he rips a double off the wall.
Cepeda then walks - have to assume Bearden's nearing the end.
McCarver then doubles - that scores the Cards first run - it ends Bearden's day but there are men on second and third and nobody out.

30 year old RH Russ Christopher comes on to face Maris -- and pops him up.
Julian Javier is next - he lines to Boudreau - and that's two.
Mike Shannon works a full count -- and then walks.  That loads the bases - that means the tying runs are on base.
Another full count - this time to Maxvill -- and now it's 4-2.
The backup catcher Dave Ricketts is called on to hit - a base hit can tie this game -- but he grounds to Boudreau - flip to second - and it's over.

Athletics have the seed advtantage and a solid WAR advantage; they have the two best position players in the series - they are solid favorites to advance here.  We obviously just saw this Yankee team but two years earlier - here they are again, but its the war - no DiMaggio, no Henrich.  This team just is not as good as the '41 team and, on paper, not as good as the '29 A's.

GAME ONE

1st: The great Lefty Grove gets the ball for Connie Mack in Game 1 - 29 years old, 20-6, 2.81 -- Grove came up in '25 and went right into the rotation for the A's and led the league in Ks, in his second season he led the league in ERA; this year - he led the league in starts, ERA and Ks (Grove led the league in Ks each of his first 7 seasons) and two years from now he wins the MVP. Grove will win exactly 300 games over his 17 year career. He walks both Joe Gordon and Bill Dickey to open, after an out, he gives up a run scoring single to Nick Etten. Billy Johnson then walks and Johnny Lindell singles home a run. Yankees 2 A's 0
1st: It's testament, at least in part (probably large part) to the talent drain of the war years that 35 year old Spud Chandler has video game numbers in 1943 -- 20-4, 1.98.  We just saw Chandler, of course, pitch twice with the '41 Yankees in the prior series. 1-2-3

2nd: 24 year old Stuffy Stirnweiss is given the shortstop spot, ahead of the veteran Frankie Crosetti, for this series, this his rookie year - he will have two really strong seasons (again, it's the war years) in '44 and '45 finishing in the top 5 in the MVP vote both years and then immediately drop off following.  He singles, but that's all.
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: Bill Dickey and Charlie Keller single - that brings to the plate first baseman Nick Etten -- Etten came up with the A's in '38, was the cross-town Phillies starter at first base in both '41 and '42 - was sold to the Yankees prior to this season and he finished 7th in the AL MVP race -- Etten makes his old organization pay here -- he htis a 3 run homer -- the Yankees have jumped - jumped out to a starting 5 run bulge on the A's. Grove walks Johnson, gets an out - and then gives up a 2 run homer to Bud Metheny - I'll tell you what, this sold out Philadelphia crowd is shocked - they were solid, solid favorites coming into the series and their ace has just gotten bombed here.  Grove is replaced by 31 year old RH Eddie Rommel, 12 wins and a 2.85 ERA. He gets through it.  Yankees 7 A's 0
3rd: Max Bishop is the first A's baserunner, he gets hit.  But that's all.

4th: Dickey singles with one out, after the second out Etten singles and then Bill Johnson singles and that's another run.  Yankees 8 A's 0
4th: The first Philadelphia hit is a leadoff double by Mickey Cochrane. Cochrane's 26 and has been the A's catcher since his rookie year in 1925 when he finished 10th in the AL MVP race; he finished 4th in '27 and won the AL MVP last year.  6 years from now he wins a second MVP as the catcher/manager for the Tigers.  He moves to third on a Jimmie Foxx single and then scores on an Al Simmons groundout. Yankees 8 A's 1

5th: Metheny walks, Stirnweiss singles, but Rommel holds the line.
5th: Joe Boley, 32 year old shortstop, hits a 2 out double. Boley was a 30 year old rookie two years prior and he'll be out of the league after the '32 season - he's stranded at second.

6th: 28 year old lefty Ossie Orwoll had a 4.80 ERA and he's next. This is his second - and last - year in the bigs.  1-2-3
6th: Cocrhane singles - that's all.

7th: 25 year old RH Bill Shores is the 4th A's pitcher; 11 wins, 3.60 -- Shores is also in his second big league season, he gives up a Metheny single, but that's all.
7th: Jimmy Dykes singles and after an out, Bing Miller drives him home with a double. Miller's 34, became an Athletic in 1922, his second season - during the '26 season, they send him to the Browns for Baby Doll Jacobson and then got him back at the end of the '27 season for Sam Gray. He'll be an A until he's 40 years old, when he finishes his career with the Red Sox. Max Bishop then singles to put men on the corners and a Joe Boley single plates Philadelphia's third run. After the second out - Cochrane clears the bases with a double - and, I mean, I don't want to be an alarmist here, Yankee fans - but it's 8-5. And then Jimmie Foxx doubles and it's 8-6 and this Philly crowd is fully back into the game.  Yankees 8 A's 6

8th: Dickey singles and two outs later Johnson walks - but that's all - we head to the bottom of the 8th and momentum is not real but it feels real and the A's have it.
8th: 1-2-3 and then they dont.

9th: 26 year old lefty Carroll Yerkes is the 5th Philadelphia pitcher; 1-2-3 and we head to the bottom of the 9th.
9th: Chandler remains in the game - Max Bishop is first and he flies to center.

Joe Boley is next and he grounds to first.
Lefty pinch hitter Homer Summa is the A's last hope - he grounds to Gordon, onto first, ballgame.

A's comeback falls short -

Dickey reached 4 times,
Etten had 3 hits, 4 RBI, and that homer
Johnson reached 4 times
Metheny reached 3 times and he homered
Stirnweiss reached twice

For the A's..

Cochrane had 3 hits, 2 doubles
Foxx had 2 hits
Boley had 2 hits

One more at Shibe Park, can the A's salvage a split?

GAME TWO

1st: Big start here for 29 year old RH George Earnshaw, the A's do not want to go down 2-0 and head to Yankee Stadium; the Reds pulled it off, but will it happen twice in a row? 24-8, 3.29.  He's just in his second year in the bigs and led the league in wins, this will be the best season of his 9 year career. 1-2-3
1st: We saw 29 year old RH Tiny Bonham from the '41 Yankees bullpen, this year he's 15-8, 2.29. In between that '41 season and this '43 season he finished 5th in the AL MVP in '42.  He's going to be dead in 6 years - during the 1949 season he went into the hospital for an appendecotmy and never came out, a previously undetected cancer the cause of death.  Mickey Cochrane reaches by error and then Double X, Jimmie Foxx, hits a two run shot to give the A's their first lead of the series. Al Simmons hits the next pitch over the wall in left and the Philadelphia Hall of Fame sluggers have gone back to back. Yankees 0 A's 3

2nd: Joe Gordon walks/Bud Metheny singles. That's all Earnshaw allows.
2nd: Max Bishop singles, he came up in '24 and had his career year last year when he hit .316, the only time in his 12 year big league career he will break .300. He's stranded at second.

3rd: Bonham and Keller walk, Dickey then singles and the Yankees have loaded the bases, but Earnshaw really buckles down here - he gers out of another inning.
3rd: Jimmy Dykes singles with two out, he's a utility man for this A's team, getting the start at third in this series, Dykes came up way back in 1918, this is his career best season with the bat, that's all Bonham allows.

4th: Stirnweiss singles with 2 out, nothing else.
4th: 1-2-3

5th: Dickey/Etten single with one out, again - Earnshaw keeps them off the board.
5th: After an out, Cochrane singles and Foxx walks - Foxx is just 21 and already a monster bat, he came up when he was 17 years old - this year he led the league with a .463 OBP. He's going to win the MVP Award in '32 and then again in '38 with the Red Sox.  Al Simmons then singles and the 3 Philly Hall of Famers are all on base - Dykes grounds out, it scores another run. Yankees 0 A's 4

6th: Bill Johnson singles with one out and an out later so does Bonham, again -- again Earnshaw works his way out of trouble.
6th: Bishop hits a one out single, that's all.

7th: With one out, Etten walks and then Joe Gordon hits a bomb - a two run shot to left - it cuts the A's lead in half. Yankees 2 A's 4
7th: 1-2-3, nice inning for Bonham.

8th: Johnson walks, after an out, Johnny Lindell pinch singles, Keller then singles home a run -- and then Dickey triples home both the tying run....and the go ahead run...Bill Shores enters for the A's and gets out of it - but the comeback is complete and now it's Yankees 5 A's 4
8th: The Yankees really have only one effective bullpen arm, RH Johnny Murphy is now 34, a dozen wins and a 2.51 ERA - he strikes out the side, the A's are in trouble.

9th: 1-2-3, Shores pitched well in game one and again today.
9th: Bishop is first -- he leads off with a single, tying run on base.
Boley grounds to third -- over to second -- onto first.  Double Play.
Sammy Hale is sent up to hit for the pitcher - last chance here for the A's - and he doubles down the right field line - Hale safely standing up into second.

Tying run in scoring position.  Two outs - Cochrane to the plate; Marius Russo was the Yankees top starter two years ago, he was 5-10 this year and didn't get a spot in the series, but McCarthy brings him in right now -- and he pops out to Gordon.

GAME THREE

1st: Hank Bowory was the MVP of the Yankees first round series; during the regular season, the 27 year old RH was 14-9, 2.82 - he's in his second season, all of his good years will happen through '45 when he finishes 6th in the MVP race.  Jimmie Foxx reached on a one out error and Al Simmons singles, but that's all.
1st: 32 year old lefty Rube Walberg goes for Connie Mack, the A's backs against the wall - 18-11, 3.60 -- he came to the A's during his rookie season in '23, he'll be in the rotation from '25-33. 1-2-3

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Billy Johnson singles with one out, that's all.

3rd: Fox walks with two out, Al Simmons singles - and then Jimmy Dykes, the MVP from their round 1 series win doubles both men home and the A's are on top - Mule Haas then singles home Dykes; it's Haas's second year with the A's, he's about to lead the league in sac bunts for 5 straight years - like game 2, the A's take control early Athletics 3 Yankees 0
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Joe Gordon doubles and an out later Charlie Keller walks, Etten then walks and now the bases are loaded.  Billy Johnson singles - it's 3-1. Johnny Lindell walks - its 3-2. After the second out Stirnweiss walks and the Yankees have tied it up - Hank Borowy then helps himself and maybe ends this series with a bases clearing double; the Yankees have plated 6th in the 4th and that could be the end of this.  Eddie Rommel again has an early entrance into a game Athletics 3 Yankees 6

5th: 1-2-3
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Haas walks - that's it.
6th: 1-2-3

7th: Foxx singles with two and he will come all the way around to score on an Al Simmons double. Simmons has been starting for this team since he was a 22 year old rookie, he's had 3 top 5 MVP finishes. He's never hit below .300 and won't until '35 when he's with the White Sox. Athletics 4 Yankees 6
7th: Borowy doubles again, with one out and then after the second out Dickey doubles him home and that sure looks like it's the end of this series. Bill Shores is back on for the A's and the inning ends Athletics 4 Yankees 7

8th: Mule Haas homers down the right field line to get the run back - can the A's come back from the dead? Miller walks and two out later, Shores, hitting for himself - singles.  The A's have them on the corners - tying runs on base with two out and Cochrane coming to the plate.  The Yankees go to the pen for Johnny Murphy -- big, big spot - Cochrane singles -- that scores Miller and now it is 7-6. Tying run 90 feet away and Jimmy Foxx strolling to the plate.  Foxx hits a rocket to right center - splits the outfield - Shores scores the tying run - Cochrane is held at third, he might have had a chance there - but with the score tied and Al Simmons on deck, holding at third makes sense.  Murphy gets Simmons, A's 7 Yankees 7
8th: Etten walks and after an out Lindell reaches by error - Bud Metheny then drives a ball down the right field line - it clears the bases and the Yankees have jumped back on top.  Carroll Yerkes comes on for the A's, he gets the second out then walks Roy Weatherly, hitting for Murphy.  He then walks Gordon to load the bases - but it ends there.  A's 7 Yankees 9

9th: Marius Russo ended game 2 and he's on again here - Dykes is first - he flies to Lindell, one away.  Haas is next and he singles.  Miller grounds wide of first - Etten throws to short to get the lead runner.  Two away.  One out from the sweep.  Russo walks Bishop.  Two on, two out.  Joe Boley flies to left and it is done.

Huge celebration on the Yankee Stadium mound - the '41 Yankees were up 2-0 and blew their series - this Yankee team was a sizeable underdog and they sweep the A's.
