Wrestlemania 31 Preview
Saturday, March 28, 2015
What do you most remember about the night Bret Hart returned
to RAW?
For me, it was his entrance music.
Because it’s not right, right? Why would you have Bret Hart return to RAW
for the first time in over a dozen years and give him what sounds like a knockoff
version of his theme?
Here’s my suggestion – the wrongness of the theme was a
feature, not a bug; it ended forever the “You screwed Bret” chants that greeted
WWE in Canada – it was the promotion saying “You want the Hit Man? Fine. Here’s who we’ll make him.”
See the WWE version of ECW.
See Bill Goldberg with a Goldust wig.
This is strategic; it’s a devaluing of your own assets in
order to crush fan opposition.
I know that sounds Machiavellian. The hallways of Titan Tower are caked in
blood.
Hey, Wrestlemania 31 is Sunday, or, as their press release
put it (credit to Kirk Hiner)
“WWE’s annual pop culture extravaganza” from Santa Clara, home of the defending
NFC Champion…er…the NFC West Champ…home of many fans of the Golden St.
Warriors, best basketball team on earth.
Let’s see whose blood will be dripping.
WWE Title: Brock
Lesnar (c) (with Paul Heyman) vs. Roman Reigns
The biggest babyface in the promotion is a heel. Brock Lesnar whipped John Cena at SummerSlam
2014, has appeared sporadically since (to smirk and have great matches) and
Sunday, a year after ending the Undertaker’s win streak, is going to be an
overwhelming fan favorite.
That’s a lot of approval for a part time heel champion and
is, in no small part, a rejection of Roman Reigns, who many (most?) fans resent
as insufficiently worthy of his push.
I’ve been writing now on the interwebs for nearly two
decades; in 1995, when Bret Hart was WWF Champion and Roman Reigns was 10, I
wrote the following:
See, I'm agnostic
on Madonna, which gives me leave to make the point that, while sometimes
provocative, Madonna isn't exactly brimming with a whole lot of readily
discernable talent. More accurately, her level of success has outstripped her
level of ability to such an extent that it causes even those who are
emotionally stable to view her with a certain degree of distaste - and fills
Kirk Hiner with an uncontrollable rage. It's not so much that Kirk Hiner is
jealous of Madonna. After all, John Glenn has achieved a similar amount of
success and Kirk Hiner has never uttered an opinion one way or the other about
him. Nor is it abject self interest. Kirk Hiner doesn't believe that there is a
finite amount of success, maybe stored in a secret vat in Dayton, Ohio, such
that for every drop of Madonna success an identical amount is rendered
unavailable to someone whom Kirk Hiner might deem more worthy, say Alyssa
Milano. I mean, that, in fact, is the case, but Kirk Hiner doesn't believe it.
To my way of thinking, a person's value as a human being can readily be tabulated using a series of mathematical calculations which are then placed on a nexus of interlocking grids (I've got the charts laid out back at the house, please call before you stop by). I conceptualize this as if on an X,Y axis. A person's aggregate worth being placed on the horizontal plane, and level of success existing on the vertical. Kirk Hiner would probably plot Madonna as something approximating (-6,92). That's a -6 for worth and a 92 for success. Subtract 92 from -6 and you get a final product of -98 which, as I don't have to tell you, is pretty darn low.

25 year old me was onto something (onto a lot of
somethings, am I right ladies, highfive).
The reason for the rejection of Reigns (like the continued dislike of
John Cena by much of the fanbase, and the now forgotten refusal to accept
Triple H as the top guy in the promotion) has nothing to do with jealousy it
has to do with equity; wrestling’s a delicate work, if you give your audience
Madonna when they want Ani Difranco (or a more appropriate 1995 reference)
they’re likely to refuse to accept your legitimacy.
The finish (and the quality of the match) is an
open question; the high profile way in which Lesnar re-signed with the
promotion this week makes it impossible Reigns wins the belt as a babyface
(either he loses clean or turns and wins).
Were I to guess, a Rock appearance to aid Reigns in winning the belt is
the most likely result. The fans having
turned on Rock at the Rumble is a motivation for what would be a heel
turn. That sets up Brock/Rock at 32
(which has to be the aim) and gets the belt away from Lesnar. I can’t claim any interest at all in The
Rock, but Reigns losing, then attacking Lesnar to aid Rollins in cashing in his
briefcase postmatch (with additional aid from Ambrose) would be my preferred
booking (actually, my preferred booking would be Kenta winning the battle
royal, moving to the main roster, building to a SummerSlam match against Brock,
where, with the aid of a turning Paul Heyman, he’d beat him to take the WWE
Title, and we’d head to a Kenta/Daniel Bryan main event at 32. But that’s why I’m
not booking.)
Edit - 4 stars, and a solid 4, closer to 4 1/4 which is what I'd guess consensus will be. Reigns took an ass kicking, Lesnar had a lot of color, they did a screwy finish with Rollins pinning Reigns to take the strap.

IC
Ladder Match: Bad News Barrett (c) vs.
R-Truth vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Luke Harper vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Stardust vs.
Daniel Bryan
Really likely to be the best match on the show with
the crazy collisions and whatnot. It’s
been a silly build as the contestants play hot po-titties with the belt (sorry,
the Championship. Belt, like climate
change, is a word which one dare not speak).
Daniel Bryan was the hottest act in the company, but obviously we couldn’t
have that, so he was beaten repeatedly, given somewhat whiny promos, and placed
in the middle of the card. See? Sometimes WWE superstars get warm, sometimes
they get cold – just like the climate there’s nothing people can do about it,
that’s God’s decision.
Probably,
he wins here in the opening match to Wrestlemania proper. That allows the fans to get their Yes Chants
out of their system before the non vanilla midgets take their rightful place at
the top of the card.
3 3/4 stars - entirely as expected.

US Title: John Cena v. Rusev
Randy Orton vs. Seth
Rollins
Jesus,
are we still watching Randy Orton matches while Sami Zayn sits for two years in
Orlando?
Randy
Orton isn’t terrible; like Cena (or Hunter, or Batista or, eventually, Reigns) he can have good matches; it’s not like Kane has been at the top of the card the
last decade; it’s that our increased access to better wrestling acts like
baseball fans increased access to better metrics---its increasingly made all wrestling fans smart wrestling fans. The small bizarro world who would rather see Finn Balor in this match than Orton (or who boo when a
manager uses his two hitter to bunt in the 7th inning) has grown
enough that it’s hard for even an effective monopoly like WWE to keep saying
Randy Orton is one of the
best wrestlers in the world.
If
Orton wins (and I’d expect it to be a good match) that’s a clue that Rollins
might cash in that briefcase at the end of the night. Cena's in a feud with an evil Russian like it's 1980 and Mike Eruzione is gonna run in. Rusev's good, but this is super dumb.
US Title: 3 1/4
Orton/Rollins: 3 1/2
Rusev/Cena was fine; Orton/Rollins was a tick less than hoped for, but with a great finish, and as predicted, set up the briefcase cash in.

Sting
v. HHH
Undertaker v. Bray
Wyatt
Combined
age of these matches, not even including Bray, is 161.
Did
I mention Sami Zayn’s been in Orlando for two years?
There
was a story to be told about Sting, an actual person and not a weird Goth
superhero, finishing his career at Wrestlemania. There was a story to be told
about the Undertaker, an actual person and not an undead magician, without his
streak, now barely able to walk, coming back for one more challenge against a
younger guy.
They
didn’t tell those stories; Sting’s a vigilante and The Undertaker’s David
Copperfield. These matches will both be
too long and the good guys will probably win, although a cheap HHH victory to
set up a rematch wouldn’t shock.
Sting/Hunter: 2 stars
Undertaker/Bray: 2 3/4 stars
As expected, you really felt the creaking with both matches. The booked the mess out of the Sting match, with and NWO/DX fight. Hunter did take that match.

AJ Lee and Paige vs.
The Bella Twins (Brie and Nikki Bella)
WWE
women’s matches have, by and large, been bad.
Even a wrestler like Trish, who received acclaim for her level of
improvement, was graded on a steep “not a bad jumper for a fat dude”
curve.
There’s
a possibility that may change, Ric Flair’s daughter Charlotte shows some Ronda
Rousey like potential as a real breakout star based on her working ability as
opposed to her ass. That possibility,
despite what you read at Grantland (Masked Man is WWE Pravda) doesn’t have anything to do with the
Bellas, and this match will be skippable.
Skippable. 1 3/4, Rousey did an angle with the Princess for a match I won't care about. There's nothing a McMahon could possibly do in 2015 worth watching.

Pre Show Matches:
Tag Titles : Tyson
Kidd and Cesaro (c) (with Natalya) vs. The New Day (Big E and Kofi Kingston)
(with Xavier Woods) vs. Los Matadores (Diego and Fernando) (with El Torito) vs.
The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) (with Naomi)
André the Giant
Memorial Battle Royal
Cesaro
might be, right now, the best wrestler in the WWE; a year ago he was getting
over, but spent most of his days subsequent getting his Swiss blood drained all
over the WWE hallways. He and Tyson
Kidd, a veteran of the “not nearly as pushed as his ability would suggest”
cohort are the tag champs, they defend in the pre show. Let’s decide they keep the belts.
Everyone
not in an earlier match is in the battle royal, which has also been moved to
the pre-show (another indication that maybe a Rollins cash in might be an
unannounced end to Mania). Sheamus is
returning, I’ll say he wins (if Kenta wins, look for my Counterfactual to cease
operations, because it means I’ve gotten the call.)
Tags: good stuff, as predicted
Battle Royal: Show won.
Tags: good stuff, as predicted
Battle Royal: Show won.
Is
the show worth watching? Sure – it’s Wrestlemania, the ladder match is a real
possibility to be very good, Rollins/Orton will probably be good – and there’s
real booking uncertainty about the end of the card. It’s unlikely though that we’ll see matches
crack the upper reaches of the following list.
Worth watching, not a great show, but solidly within the Wrestlemania canon.
I've seen every Wrestlemania match multiple
times. This is, I believe, all of them. Ranked in order of quality,
for whatever reason. Match times are rounded; the Wrestlemania at which
the match took place is in parentheses; there's a star rating for every *** and
up match.
