a jim jividen blog

Here's the thing. I'm watching one of these shows on the Cooking Channel featuring food trucks. There's a Scottish expat making fish and chips; in a thick brogue he somewhat wearily explains his irritation with Americans who habitually order a side of tartar sauce: "tartar sauce is basically gherkins." That's this blog. I claim no particular insight, no revelation. If you enjoy the flavor, great, but this blog is basically gherkins.

Every San Francisco Giants Team Ranked by Pythagorean Record

Thursday, March 10, 2011

I've been releasing a series of lists based on regular season pythagorean record, you can get to the rest of them via this post.  And I spent much of 2010 making San Francisco Giants posts, which you can find here.

Here's every team in SFG history ranked by pythagorean record, normalized for a 162 game season.  I've included what happened to each of the teams which made the postseason, and included the best position player and pitcher on each team, as determined by regular season WARP (Davenport version) plus WAR (baseball-reference version).  If you divide the numbers by two, that's my WAR number.  So, for example, the number you see for Mays in '62 is 20.6, that means his WAR was 10.3. The number you're seeing in parentheses is the pythag win total, based on a 162 game season.  Here we go.

  1. 1962 100 (98) Lost WS to Yankees Best WAR+WARP position player/pitcher Mays 20.6 Marichal 6.6, Sanford 6.6.  Yup, the best team in SFG history wasn't the WS Champion, it was the first WS loser, the '62 team.
  2. 2002 98 Lost WS to Angels Bonds 24.7, Nen 7.3.  8 outs away and a 5 run lead.
  3. 1993 98 Bonds 23, Swift 9. 103 regular season wins and didn't make the playoffs.
  4. 2000 97 Lost in playoffs to Mets Kent 17.2, Hernandez 6.4. The missing great SFG team of recent vintage, the best regular season team in 2000, and bounced in the NLDS.
  5. 2010 94 World Champions Huff 12 Wilson 9.3. Your World Champion San Francisco Giants.
  6. 1987 93 Lost in NLCS to Cardinals Clark 9.5, Robinson 4.6. A wide open postseason in '87, the Twins are the worst WS winners in baseball history.
