a jim jividen blog

Here's the thing. I'm watching one of these shows on the Cooking Channel featuring food trucks. There's a Scottish expat making fish and chips; in a thick brogue he somewhat wearily explains his irritation with Americans who habitually order a side of tartar sauce: "tartar sauce is basically gherkins." That's this blog. I claim no particular insight, no revelation. If you enjoy the flavor, great, but this blog is basically gherkins.

My 3 Fantasy Baseball Teams

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

With all the other writing obligations last week, I couldn't find time to list the results of my 3 fantasy baseball drafts.

CBSsports leagues, 5x5, 10 team, weekly.

Mixed
C Santana
C Suzuki
1B Howard
2B Phillips
SS Drew
3B Rolen
MI Nishioka
CI Ka'aihue
Uti Guerrero
OF Braun
OF Kemp
OF Werth
OF Hart
OF Fowler
Bench RDavis, Coughlan, Uribe
I initially drafted a third catcher, Buck, let him go to pick up Rolen to replace the injured Drew, with Uribe moving from third to short.  I also drafted DLee as my corner, cut him to pick up Ka'aihue.  Suzuki was a mistake, Posada was still on the board and I had him more highly rated.  I offered a trade after the draft - rebuffed.  Hart's been down, I've been starting Rajah Davis. I turned down a deal moving Santana for Beltre.

P Anderson
   Buehrle
   Haren
   F Hernandez
   Nathan
   E Santana
   Shields
   Vazquez
   Walden

Bn  Francisco
      Lyon
      Peavy

I went back and forth between Anderson and Lewis before taking the former.  Buehrle is my streaming spot, he goes twice next week.  I had swapped out Rodney for Walden today.  I got Peavy cheap hoping he will come back.

NL Only
C Buck
    Montero
1B Lee
2B Johnson
SS Reyes
3B Rolen
CI Lopez
MI Hall
OF Braun
OF Bruce
OF Coughlan
OF Fowler
OF Stanton
Uti Soriano
Bn Gomes
     Valdez
     Baker
     Cedeno

As long as Lopez gets ABs, I'm okay in that corner spot - in the single leagues there's just nothing on the wire, 10 teams, 29 man rosters - outside of a deep arm the cupboard is bare.  I've got Gomes in for the injured Stanton.

P Broxton
   Figueroa
   Garza
   Harang
   Lee
   McDonald
   Mitre
   Morton
   Vazquez

Bn Garland
     Gregerson

With just Lee as a top arm, clearly I'm hoping for a big Vazquez bounceback and clearly I spent my draft focusing on bats.  I've had Gregerson in the rotation with McDonald hurt, Mitre is my two start pitcher for next week (theoretically) although there's not much streaming possible in a single league.  I picked up Morton today for Clippard.

AL Only
C Arencibia
    Pierzynski
1B Moreland
2B Nishioka
SS Y Escobar
3B F Lopez
CI Trumbo
MI Getz
OF Bourjos
OF Brantley
OF Raburn
OF Suzuki
OF Swisher
Uti Guerrero

Bn Laroche
     Teahan
     Gutierrez
     Hafner
     Revere

So, not great.  That's Felipe Lopez as my starter at third, you'll see I'm carrying 3 backup third basemen here, hoping that any of them will break out and get some playing time.  I also have Trumbo as my corner, meaning if Morales gets healthy and Trumbo hasn't hit the hell out of the ball, I'm looking at being two players short.  I've got Hafner starting for Vlad right now - and obviously one of them could be moved in a deal for a third baseman a few weeks from now.

P Chen
   Davies
   Hernandez
   Kazmir
   Nathan
   Rivera
   Sabathia
   Talbot
   Vargas

Bn Peavy

It's arms where I spent my money in the AL, intentionally taking the opposite approach from my NL draft.

I'd like to win any one of them; that would be fine.
