The Return of...Tendown. January 4, 2015

Sunday, January 4, 2015

Tendown 156 is here.  This is Tendown 157

So, I used to write a weekly recap of whatever it was that came to mind; it was pretty good, says the author about himself, but a casualty of my "I've got two jobs and both are online, make the writing stop" way of life.

That life continues - and so the writing really doesn't resume, but it struck me that I wanted a place other than twitter and facebook to record what it was each week that I wanted to recall.

So, this is that.  Very little prose.  I gave at the company store.  More links.  Links curated with my delicate sensibility.  Fun!

1. Serial got hosed and somewhere we should note that the Shonda Rhimes shows are all pretty bad. Rembert's Who Won 2014 bracket.

2. Whatever you do - don't criticize a Bradley Cooper movie.

3. Deadspin perfectly characterizes my feelings about the Harbaugh firing.

4. It can't be that Republican leaders have Neo-Nazi sympathies, right? The Majority Whip Talked to David Duke's Group

5. Fallows on the military.

6. This dude kept getting Charlie Browned.

7. Read some of The Worst Sportswriting of the Year. The Whitlock article is a good place to start.

8. I'm picking a Super Bowl rematch.

9. Guess who won't be unionizing in 2015?

10. Would you like to buy Rickey Henderson's house?

And one more...

11. Mario Cuomo's dead. Here he is at the '84 Convention.

That's all for this time.  I'll be back next time.  If there is a next time...

Your pal,

Jim

Forever Giants:1938 New York Giants(Year 56)

1937 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season.  The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

1938 88-74
C Harry Danning  2.5
1B Johnny McCarthy .5
2B Alex Kampouris  1.45
SS Dick Bartell 4.45
3B Mel Ott 9.5 MVPQ
LF Jo Jo Moore 1.4
CF Hank Leiber .7
RF Jimmy Ripple .8
OF Bob Seeds 1
Uti Lou Chiozza .05
Uti George Myatt 1.35
C Gus Mancuso 1.5
1B Sam Leslie -.35
2B Bil Cissell .75
IF Mickey Haslin .75
SP Cliff Melton 1.25
SP Harry Gumbert 2.25
SP Hal Schumacher 3.2
SP Carl Hubbell 3.35
RP Dick Coffman 1
RP Bill Lohrman .85
RP Jumbo Brown 2.5

- Hubbell wins his 200th game; a Giants fan is killed after a game at a bar outside of Ebbets Field.  Bartell gets dealt, but he'll be back.

Forever Giants:1937 National League Champion New York Giants(Year 55)

Friday, January 2, 2015

1936 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season.  The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

1937 NL Champions (lose to Yanks 4-2) 95-67
C Harry Danning 2.25
1B Johnny McCarthy .65
2B Burgess Whitehead 3.5
SS Dick Bartell 6.85
3B Lou Chiozza -1.7
LF Jo Jo Moore 2.3
CF Jimmy Ripple 1.1
RF Mel Ott 5.85
C Gus Mancuso 1.65
OF Wally Berger 1.65
OF Sam Leslie 1.15
OF Hank Leiber .45
SP Carl Hubbell 4.05
SP Cliff Melton 4.75
SP Hal Schumacher 2.35
SP Harry Gumbert 2.1
SP Slick Castleman 1.65

-The Giants spend some of spring training in Cuba, win another pennant, lose to the Yanks again.  Terry's over 90+ pythagorean wins in each of his five seasons as manager, the Giants don't lose anything in the transition from McGraw. Ott moves by Connor as the top Giants position player by WAR ever and Hubbell is now the second greatest Giants pitcher.  Freddie Fitzsimmons finishes his Giant run and spends the rest of his career as a Dodger.
