43. 1928 New York Yankees v. 86. 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers

22. 1976 Cincinnati Reds v. 107. 1906 Chicago White Sox
I've done a version of this tournament previously, using WAR to determine results - the winners were the 1976 Reds.

2B Morgan (32)  187  8.9
LF Foster (27)    150   6.1

SP2 Norman (33)  114  2.3
SP3 Nolan (28)     102

Platoon at 1B - otherwise, Sparky just writes the names on the card and sends them out.  Reds are seed favorites, they're WAR favorites at C-1B(when Perez plays)-2B-3B-LF-RF- but probably you like the Sox in every pitching matchup.

1st: 24 year old Pat Zachry gets the call for Sparky's Reds for game one; 14-7, 2.74, he walks George Davis on 4 pitches and the Sox immediately challenge Bench - Davis steals second, and then Frank Isbell hits the first pitch he sees into right center - Davis comes around and just 3 batters into the game, the Sox have the lead.  White Sox 1 Reds 0
1st: 27 year old lefty Doc White has the unenviable task of facing the Big Red Machine at Riverfront. 18-6, 1.52 ERA. 1-2-3

2nd: George Rohe reaches on an error with 2 out and then Billy Sullivan walks, that's all.
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: 1-2-3
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: Hahn walks with two out, that's it.  Zachry has given up just one hit.
4th: 1-2-3, that's 12 up, 12 down for White.

5th: Sullivan singles with one out, that's all.
5th: With two out, Cesar Geronimo walks - that's the first Red to reach - but that's all.

6th: Isbell and Fielder Jones walk back to back to open the 6th, a groundout moves the lead runner to third -- and then a Patsy Dougherty groundout drives home the White Sox second run.  White Sox 2 Reds 0
6th: With two out - Rose singles, that's the first hit of the day for Cincinnati - but there's nothing else and this home crowd, which was hugely confident at the beginning of the day, is now starting to tense up.

7th: Pedro Borbon is the new Reds pitcher, 29 year old right hander and he is in trouble, Rohe walks and Sullivan singles.  They move up a base on an out - and then George Davis singles home the third run. Sparky brings in a lefty, 24 year old Will McEnaney, and he gets through it.  White Sox 3 Reds 0
7th: The Reds threaten for the first time, George Foster leads off with a single and Ken Griffey walks. But White steels himself and drives through it. The Reds are in trouble today.

8th: 1-2-3
8th: Concepcion opens with a single, only the 3rd hit of the day for Cincinnati. But there's nothing else and it sure looks like the heavily favored Reds are about to drop game one.

9th: 20 year old right hander Manny Sarmiento is next for the Reds, Rohe singles with one out, but there's nothing else and we go to the bottom of the 9th.
9th: The Sox go to the pen, 26 year old right hander Frank Smith to close it out - he gives up a leadoff base hit to Joe Morgan - but the Reds go down quietly after that and are shockingly shut out at home.

White Sox 3
Reds 0
WP White
LP Zachry

Doc White goes 8, gives up just 3 hits for the win. Davis/Isbell/Rohe all reached twice, 3 times for Sullivan.

Just no offense to speak of for the Reds.

Let's go to Chicago - where the Sox can close this out.

2B Morgan (32)  187  8.9

C Bench (28)     109     4.9
SS Concepcion (28)  107   5.3

C Sullivan (31) 77      1.7
RF O'Neill (26)  83       0
SP2 Walsh (25)  135    4.9

1st: Pitching can be tough to stop in a 3 game series - Ed Walsh is a 25 year old right hander, 17-13, 1.88 ERA and he looks to end this series. Rose hits a one out double - and then Griffey singles, but the Reds didn't score in game one and they don't score here.
1st: Fred Norman's a 33 year old lefty; 12-7, 3.09, can he extend the life of these Reds? 1-2-3.

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Jiggs Donahue singles, after an out, George Rohe singles. but the Sox do not score.

3rd: Morgan walks and Rose singles, he has two hits - and then Griffey and Foster each hit run scoring singles and the Reds have broken through. Griffey scores on a Geronimo groundout and that's 3.  Driessen walks, this inning will end Reds 3 White Sox 0
3rd: Billy Sullivan singles, John O'Neill walks - after an out, George Davis doubles both of them home and we might have a ballgame today; After the second out, Isbell singles, this inning will end Reds 3 White Sox 2

4th: 1-2-3
4th: 1-2-3

5th: Geronimo singles with two out, that's all.
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Bench walks - 2 outs later, so does Morgan, but that's all.
6th: 1-2-3, that's 10 straight for Norman.

7th: Geronimo walks with one out and then Driessen singles, but nothing else.
7th: 1-2-3 -- Norman comes up big in this one, 13 straight set down.

8th: Concepcion singles - an out later Sparky calls on Bob Bailey to hit for Norman and he walks. Morgan then singles - and Rose hits his second double of the day -- that might do it - the Reds are now up 5-2. Walsh then balks Rose over to third - and then there's a passed ball - Rose just streaks to the plate - Sullivan flips to Walsh and Rose just levels the White Sox pitcher, just leaves him in a heap.  Rose is safe - this Chicago crowd boos vociferously - Rose is fired up - the Red dugout is fired up - the right hander Frank Smith enters for the Sox as Walsh cannot continue - we'll see what ramifications come from this if we go to a game 3 - Reds 6 Sox 2
8th: Pedro Borbon comes on for the Reds, 1-2-3

9th: 1-2-3
9th: 1-2-3

Reds 6
White Sox 2
WP Norman
LP Walsh

Norman and Borbon give up just 5 hits; Morgan reached 3 times today, so did Rose, who doubled twice and scored the last run of the game on that mad dash to the plate that knocked out Walsh, Geronimo also reached twice.

For the Sox, Davis has now reached 3 times, so has Isbell and Rohe, 4 times for Sullivan.

Game 3.  Riverfront Stadium.

C Bench (28)     109     4.9
SS Concepcion (28)  107   5.3
SP3 Nolan (28)     102

1st: One game for all the money; Gary Nolan is a 28 year old right hander, 15-9, 3.46, after two out he walks Fielder Jones, the Sox player/manager, but that's all.
1st: The Sox counter with a 29 year old lefty, Nick Altrock, 20-13, 2.06. 1-2-3

2nd: Dougherty singles/Hahn walks -but Nolan works out of it.
2nd: With one out, Griffey/Geronimo single back to back - but Altrock escapes.

3rd: Isbell doubles after two out, but is stranded.
3rd: Joe Morgan singles with two out and then George Foster walks, but again, there are no runs and we head to the 4th, scoreless in this showdown game.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Geronimo singles again, with one out, after the second out, Concepcion is intentionally walked to being Nolan to the plate.  He hits a routine grounder to Davis - but he cant field it cleanly and that loads the bases with two out -- Rose doubled twice in game 2 - and he doubles here, scoring the first two runs of the day. Sox 0 Reds 2

5th: 1-2-3
5th: Griffey singles with one out, the Reds do not add to the lead.

6th: Davis walks - two out later, Jones singles, but still Nolan keeps the Sox off the board.
6th: Geronimo and Bench single, that's a 3 hit day for Geronimo - he went to third on Bench's single -- and then scores when Altrock throws a wild pitch and it's 3-0.  After an out - Nolan helps himself with a double - that scores the 4th run and this Riverfront crowd can finally exhale, it looks like their side is moving on.  After the second out - Morgan singles Nolan home.  Sox 0 Reds 5

7th: Rohe doubled with one out, that's it.
7th: 1-2-3

8th: O'Neill hits for the pitcher and singles, and out later Isbell doubles and the Sox have two in scoring position - this sure seems like their last stand. Jones reached on error - that scores the Sox first run and ends Nolan's day. Pedro Borbon enters, he's pitched in each game, Donahue reaches on error - and that's the second run. Sox 2 Reds 5
8th: Frank Smith comes on for the Sox, 1-2-3

9th: The Reds closer is Rawly Eastwick, its his first appearance, 25 year old right hander, 26 saves, 11 wins, 2.09 ERA -- 1-2-3 and it's done.

White Sox 2
Reds 5
WP Nolan
LP Altrock

Rose reached 4 times in the last two days, with another 2 run double today, Morgan reached 5 times in the last two days, so did Geronimo. They all reached once in game one -- Norman and Nolan each had strong outings -- there's not an obvious MVP - I think we'll say Rose, 4 RBI in the last two games, that run he scored in the 9th in game 2 - let's go Rose.

The '76 Reds move on -- just one slot remains in Region 6.

43. 1928 New York Yankees v. 86. 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers

Last Chance for the Yankees in Region 6- and it's our first look at a 70s Dodgers team.

RF Ruth (33)       206    9.4

SP2 Hoyt (28)     113    4.2
SP3 Pipgras (28)  112   4.4

Pennock is the only Yankee LH. Yanks are seed favorites, they are WAR favorites at 1B-2B-RF-SP2-SP3

1st: Yankees do not have a team that has advanced in Region 6 - Herb Pennock, 34 year old lefty, looks to end that status. 17-6, 2.56, Willie Crawford was one of the Dodgers top players, but Alston sits him in game one to get both of his catchers in the lineup against the lefty - Joe Ferguson's in right field and with one out, he doubles and after the second out, the other catcher, Steve Yeager, singles him home.  Dodgers 1 Yankees 0
1st: 28 year old right hander Andy Messersmith is the best starter in the series, 20-6, 2.59, he gives up a leadoff single to Earl Combs after an out, Lou Gehrig doubles him home to tie this one up.  Dodgers 1 Yankees 1

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: Jimmy Wynn leads off with a double, that's all.
3rd: Babe Ruth draws a two out walk, that's all.

4th: With two out, Bill Buckner walks and Bill Russell singles, but the Dodgers do not score.
4th: Tony Lazzeri walks to open the inning and then Mark Koenig singles - Bob Meusel then singles home Lazzeri and it's 2-1. Pat Collins walks, then after an out Herb Pennock helps himself with a 2 run scoring single - Collins tries to score from second, but a perfect relay throw from Lopes guns him down.  Dodgers 1 Yankees 4

5th: Jimmy Wynn walks, but nothing follows.
5th: Lazzeri doubles with two out, but that's all.

6th: Russell singles with two out, that's all.
6th: Collins walks with one out, that's it.

7th: Pennock goes six strong and drives in 2 and his day is over; 27 year old lefty Fred Heimach is new next Yankee pitcher. Rough start - he walks Ferguson on 4 pitches and on the fifth pitch Steve Garvey laces a double; Yeager then singles and now it's 4-2 with nobody out. After the first out - Lopes singles home Garvey and Huggins is out with the quick hook; 31 year old right hander Wilcy Moore is on to put out the fire.  He gets one - but a Russell grounder to second is kicked by Lazzeri and it scores the tying run for LA.  Dodgers 4 Yankees 4
7th: 26 year old right hander Charlie Hough gets the call from Alston; Combs leads off with a single, but it's still tied as we go to the 8th here in Yankee Stadium.

8th: Ferguson singles with one out, after the second out, Yeager singles - strong work for the Dodger catching duo today; it ends though right there.
8th: Meusel hits a one out double, but we head to the 9th.

9th: 30 year old right hander Myles Thomas comes on for New York - he gives up a one out Buckner single, that's it.  Bottom of the 9th.
9th: 36 year old lefty Jim Brewer enters for the Dodgers; 1-2-3.  Extras.

10th: Huggins calls on 38 year old Stan Coveleski, whose best days are behind him, he gives up a walk to Wynn, but nothing else.
10th: Lazzeri singles with one out, after the second out, Meusel singles and the winning run is 90 feet away - but Brewer gets Collins and we head to the 11th.

11th: 32 year old lefty Tom Zachary comes on for New York - 1-2-3
11th: Couple of really strong bullpen arms for LA - one is 28 year old lefty Geoff Zaun who had a 2.03 ERA; 1-2-3.  Ruth and Gehrig will both be up in the 12th.

12th:  Huggins makes a big move - his game 2 starter was scheduled to be 28 year old Waite Hoyt - 23 game winner; but he gets the call for the 12th.  We won't see him start in this series now; he gives up a one out single to Russell - 27 year old Tom Paciorek hits for the pitcher - and he singles.  Russell goes to third - LA has men on the corners with just one out.  But Hoyt gets both Wynn and Ferguson - that's why you go to your big arm in the big spot.
12th: The Dodgers 5th starter is Al Downing, 33 year old lefty - and he takes the ball with the unenviable task of facing Ruth and Gehrig. He gets Ruth, but Gehrig singles - and then so does Lazzeri - Gehrig goes to third and the winning run is 90 feet away.

And then he's not - Mark Koenig singles - Gehrig scores and that's how it ends.  Jubilation in the Bronx.

2nd: Ferguson singles and an out later, Cey follows. But still, scoreless.

3rd: Lazzeri leads off with a base hit, after two out, Gehrig walks but still, scoreless.
3rd: Willie Crawford, starting today, singles with one out, but we head to the 4th, scoreless.

4th: Garvey doubles with one out, after the second out, Lopes walks - but that's all.

5th: 1-2-3
5th: Crawford walks with one out, nothing else.

7th: Alston leaves John in to hit for himself - and he singles. an out later Buckner then doubles - okay, tying run at third - go ahead run at second - just one out - Pipgras gets the second out and then walks Ferguson.  Bases loaded.  Two out.  Steve Garvey coming to the plate.

And he grounds to third.  Yankees just 6 outs from wrapping this up.

8th: Meusel walks with two out-but that's it. Helluva pitchers duel in game 2.
8th: 1-2-3 and we head to the 9th.

9th: Charlie Hough comes on for Alston; 1-2-3.  Can the Dodgers find a run?
9th: Rick Auerbach pinch singles to open the inning and then Crawford singles -- tying run at second, winning run at first - nobody out - Buckner singles -- that scores the tying run - Crawford goes all the way to third!  Winning run now at third base with nobody out.  The Yankees go to the pen for Fred Heimach - and Jimmy Wynn hits a fly ball to left -- Combs catches it -- Combs throws home --- Crawford is safe!  Safe!  And the Dodgers have taken game 2.

1st: 22 year old right hander Hank Johnson is the unexpected starter for the Yankees; Waite Hoyt was needed from the bullpen to win game one, so 4th starter Johnson gets the call here. 14-9, 4.30. 1-2-3
1st: 29 year old right hander Don Sutton is his opponent; 19-9, 3.23, he walks Ruth with one out, but thats it.

Bases loaded.  Two out.  Jimmy Wynn comes to the plate.

And he grounds to short to end the game.

LA gets only 5 hits here and drops the series.  Ruth and Gehrig largely quiet in the series, Ruth almost invisible - but Lazzeri reached 9 times and Meusel 7; it's Lazzeri who takes the MVP for the series.

That wraps up Region 6.  When we work back around:

2016 Cubs v. 1998 Braves
1919 Reds v. 2017 Indians
1917 Giants v. 1969 Orioles
1976 Reds v. 1928 Yankees

That's 6 Regions down - 48 teams have moved into Round 2, which is a best of 5 series - 2 regions to go.
