Wrestlemania 38 Preview-Every Mania Match of all Time Ranked.

Monday, March 28, 2022

Wrestlemania's this weekend.  Your over/under on Will Smith/Chris Rock references on WWE programming between now and then is three hundred and nine. Here's the rundown with the qualifier that they flip things around and I'm only sort of paying attention.

Night One:
WWE SmackDown Women's Title: Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Ronda Rousey
WWE Raw Women's Title: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Bianca Belair
WWE SmackDown Tag Team Title: The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs
Edge vs. AJ Styles
Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio vs. The Miz and Logan Paul
Drew McIntyre vs. Happy Corbin (with Madcap Moss)

Night Two:
Title vs. Title: Brock Lesnar (WWE Champion) vs. Roman Reigns (Universal Champion)
WWE Raw Tag Team Title: RK-Bro  (c) vs. The Street Profits vs. Alpha Academy
WWE Women's Tag Team Title: Queen Zelina and Carmella (c) vs. Sasha Banks and Naomi vs. Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan vs. Natalya and Shayna Baszler
Johnny Knoxville vs. Sami Zayn
Pat McAfee vs. Austin Theory

-Rousey was the biggest act in the promotion in her first run, with the possible exception of Lynch at her hottest; this isn't that, right now isn't then - were I advising wrestling promotions, I'd say push back as far as you can the point where an outside act is seen as just a regular part of the show (and that point comes sooner than you think it does).  Ronda Rousey, UFC Shootfighter is a bigger act than Ronda Rousey, WWE Superstar (I'm a Tony Khan mark, but he didn't quite capitalize on Punk and Danielson to the degree that was possible when they were new; Punk's still the top draw in the promotion, but he's part of the promotion now as opposed to folk hero making his triumphant return).

-Charlotte's good, which is a little damning with faint praise, because what she's not is great (at anything) and they push her as if she's great which (I think, I'm not really in the WWE fan streets) causes some resentment.  She got the title in that super weird belt switch with Lynch.  Rousey should go over here and hopefully the match works.

(A little bit of a mess and Flair kept which is....a choice/recognition that they've blown it with Rousey)

-On the other hand, Lynch was great, at least in terms of being over - in terms of workrate, she's good, like Flair, they're both good and no better than that.  Lynch's heel turn has not worked, I think it's fair to say; in falls next to the Austin turn as pretty clearly wrongheaded at the time and worse when considering the business drop off.  Belair is fine; she was over a year ago (just so much of WWE is fine, good, it's fine - given house style it really takes something special to break through and be something more than that, it's a promotion built on 3 1/4 star matches).  Belair goes over.

(Edit- good, 3 3/4 stars; template for a very good WWE house style match, big moves, standing still hugely exaggerated facial expressions to the point of being hard to watch, it's been 12 minutes not 45, calm down - but the moves were good and the match got over and even at this star rating, which seems on the high end of my experience watching the match, I'd assume I will wind up on the low end of the public reaction to it)

-The Usos have had the Smackdown belts since July; the Reigns act has maybe grown a little stale (just a little, I'm a huge, huge fan of this gimmick) Usos are primarily used as just background for Roman, which is fine, despite their being an excellent tag team for many years.  Nakamura, of course, was a high end worker of recent vintage spending his golden years hanging out with a guy with a guitar.  July's a long time, a switch at Wrestlemania makes sense.  Big Babyface Night.

(Edit - Nope, Usos kept in an entirely inconsequential match, save for the Boogs stans as he got hurt)

-Edge/AJ might be on night 2; it doesn't really matter-  this is really the only possibility at a high end workrate match of the weekend, other than the big one (and the one they haven't announced) just given how much the promotion is centered around the big one, Edge turned, I assume he goes over, they really need to give this match 20 some odd minutes and do a full main event style match.

(Edit - 3 1/4 stars, so, this match did not really get over; every time you hear any associated with wrestling say "slow down, do less, make everything mean more" - think about every WWE match that does that and just largely sits there.  This is a good match, good story (dopey finish) moves were well executed, but the WWE house style - move, stop, walk around, facial expressions - it's fundamentally a lesser style of professional wrestling)

-Rey's kid, the Miz, and a celebrity all in one match is some serious trolling.  We maybe have hit the end of the working portion of Rey's career and take a moment just to appreciate one of the greatest wrestlers who ever lived. But don't do that by watching this match.  This maybe is a Paul face turn to aid Mysterios in the win.

(Edit - the heels went over and....it wasn't bad.  Logan Paul....maybe could do this? 3 stars)

-Happy Corbin.  Man.  This company.  McIntyre wins and you do not need to watch this match.

(Edit, McIntye won and you did not need to watch this match)

-A fair complaint about WWE for years is 50/50 booking, no one ever gets over, nothing really matters - tha'ts not the case with the main event - Reigns and Brock are heavily protected acts, they have built this match for a long time and treated it as if it matters - AEW is a better promotion than WWE, it has better wrestling matches, more compelling storylines - but a feeling of "Bigness" - of "This is a monumental matchup" - they don't do it as well as this; this has been framed as the biggest match in Mania history - it's not, of course, but it feels like it matters and even after 2 full days of wrestling, when Brock and Reigns are nose to nose Sunday night - it will feel like it matters.  I would guess Brock goes over and it's good and I'm looking forward to it (just a note, no more car stuff, don't hit guys with cars, don't bring cars into the building, don't tear off car doors - you'd think the way they stunk up Bret's return angle with that WWE silliness would be a learning element, but they can't help themselves)

(Edit - 3 stars; it's fine, short, ref bump, flat finish, but kudos to the promotion for creating a legit epic feel)

-Orton/Riddle is a fun comedy act that has good enough matches that splits up at some point and it makes more sense if it's Riddle who turns on Orton.  It doesn't feel like we're there yet.  Gable's a really good worker and, in WWE fashion, it's only his ability to do comedy which gets him on the card.  Unless they're breaking up Orton/Riddle, they may as well keep the belts.

(Edit - 3 1/4 stars, best match of the night, good pacing, good finish, good opening bout tag)

-How could anyone possibly care about that women's tag match?

(Edit - no one could ever possibly remember this match, not bad enough to be bad, not good enough to be anything at all; had a little developmental feel in spots if anything)

-Sami Zayn is great - truly great, when he actually attempts to work, he can still turn it up and his character work doesn't miss, that the guy who was beloved indi icon El Generico is now wildly paranoid fatigue wearing Zayn feuding with the Jackass guy is mindbending.  I do not want to see Sami Zayn wrestle the Jackass guy, who will beat him, one assumes.

(Edit - one of the worst matches in Mania history; less a match than a sketch in a wrestling ring - the fans liked it, Jackass is a popular franchise - and I understand from the promotion's standpoint that's what matters, but there are lots of things you could put in a wrestling ring that fans might like that aren't wrestling matches. This clearly seemed like it would be the worst match of the weekend)

-McAfee's a former punter, he gave a nice platform to anti-vaxx Aaron because things just get dumber and dumber and dumber.  His announcing style is best described a energetic and worse described as fitting the quality of current WWE.  I don't see anything in Austin Theory, so if they make him the next John Cena, that tracks.  Theory goes over, right?  I don't know what Vince's role is here.

(Edit - so this is two matches, McAfee/Theory was okay, it got over, McAfee's a better wrestler than wrestling announcer, his character grates, I don't see what they see in Theory, maybe he gets over at some point, but he's got a long way to be a good worker -- and then they did McAfee/Vince which was the worst match of the weekend and near the bottom of the ranking of Mania matches all time)

-Then there's the Austin thing; clearly they couldn't convince him to do a match, so he's doing the Owens talk show and he's done physical stuff since retirement, so it's unclear how this is not that but they really want you to think this is not that.

(Edit - giving them the benefit of the doubt for not promoting Austin's first match in two decades/apparent last ever match as anything more than a talk show appearance, framing that decision making in the best possible light, Austin wanted to make the decision if he'd be willing to do an actual match very, very late, as in, he'll decide during the show, late.  And you know what - 3 stars.  Good for Steve.  I'd assume this match was part of the pitch to keep Owens from jumping sides.)

-Then there's the Cody thing; there's nothing on screen to suggest this happens, other than Rollins not having a match is a significant storyline that seemingly requires a significant payoff.  Cody's doing a Hardys like unannounced appearance to get what they hope is a Hardys like pop makes sense, Cody goes over in what is probably a really good match in that construction.  WWE doesn't seem capable currently of booking Cody correctly, of incorporating AEW into their world in any sort of realistic way and for Cody to matter in the way they'd want him to matter, he needs to be "the guy who started AEW now coming back to WWE".  I'm really intrugued about how that works.

(Edit - 4 stars, Cody/Rollins, as anticipated, and it was really good, in again, that WWE way, match of the night, strong back to back performances by the Rollins-Lynch household.  Switch sides, kids.  More money, you start with a push.  Switch sides, everyone.  Wrestling War!)

-Then there's the Gable Steveson thing; Omos is big and looking for an opponent; Steveson doing the fucntional equivalent of bodylamming him on the deck of the USS Intrepid as a debut would make sense. It gets a good pop - I for sure like Steveson in theory as a guy to sign, push hard, hope he can be a centerpiece. In practice, we'll see how quickly he can pick it all up.

(Steveson...we'll see.  I'm in favor; he's got a great pedigree and you give him a chance to pick it up, but he's not lighting up the building with natural charisma - that's okay, I'd rather start with this raw material than take a body guy and try to teach him everything else.

They added a very short New Day match.)

-Ricochet and Balor have singles titles and aren't on the cards - maybe they work the pre-show Saturday (free on USA, for those inclined).

-There's some bad stuff here; two celebrity matches, an announcer match, a Carmella match, a Corbin match, just stuff you do not want to watch.  Edge/AJ will be good, they really could use some top of their curve women's title matches, that big match is a big match and hopefully its really strong and we'll see what they do with Austin and Rhodes.

-It's Mania.  It's a happening.  There may be a year when I don't watch Wrestlemania but 38 will not be that year.  Fundamentally, of course, for my taste, everyone associated with the look and feel of WWE needs to go, the majority of creative impulses are frozen in mediocrity.  But still I watch, which I suppose makes me part of the problem.

(WWE has good stuff, less today than any point in several years because they killed NXT, but there's good stuff - the sense of scope, of moment - they can put on matches like Cody/Rollins, Belair/Lynch that are worth seeing - but you have to wade through so many miles of mediocrity or worse that, given there's an alternative promotion which focuses on having good wrestling matches, it makes time spent in these WWE streets challenging to justify)

-Here's the ranking, match times are approx, ratings are mine, I may have missed some, my apologies.  I've watched each Mania in real time, ratings are essentially real time analysis as opposed to my going back now and evaluating through modern eyes.
