1:55: PHI: Toney finds Erving on the wing and he boosts the lead to 5.

1:43: CHI: Erving picks up his 5th foul, Pippen hits 1.
:56: CHI: The Sixers come up empty, Rodman misses on the other end but gets his own rebound and winds up converting to make it a 2 point game.
:28: CHI: Harper forces a Barkley turnover; Jordan drills the midrange to tie the score.

Harper forces another turnover at 16 seconds.

Jordan runs the iso - he finds an open Luc Longley for an 8 foot Jumper at the buzzer...

Misses.  Overtime.  Here we go.

4:48 CHI: The Bulls win the tip - Pippen finds Harper in the corner and he hits a 3.
4:06: CHI: Empty trip for the Sixers; Rodman is rejected by Erving - but he dives on the floor for the loose ball and fires to Jordan for the lay in.  Biggest Bulls lead of the day.

3:57: PHI: Barkley gets the goal - and the foul - that ends the day for Longley; Barkley hits the FT and cuts it to 2.

3:50: CHI: Jordan finds Harper from the wing.

3:36 PHI: The Doctor from the paint.

3:23: CHI: Harper again - he hits a triple from the top - Harper's got 8 points in OT and he is feeling it right now.

3:16: PHI: Moses from the paint.

2:27: CHI: Failed trips for both sides leads to Jordan driving and scoring.112-107
2:13 CHI: Rodman stuffs Barkley and the Chief dunks the ball the other way and the Bulls are up 7.

1:58: PHI: Mo Cheeks long 2.

1:51: CHI: It's the veteran Parish again, hitting a 10 footer.

1:40: PHI: Barkley hits the runner.
1:09: PHI: Barkley steals the ball from Pippen and Moses gets the short one that slices it to 3.

:55: CHI: Robert Parish one more time - another J from the paint and that might be the dagger.
:31: CHI: Erving misses - Jordan's fouled and hits both.  It's over.  He'll hit another FT after another Philly miss.

Final Bulls 121 Sixers 113

Chicago was dead and buried; 8 down with 3 left.  Jordan scored the tying bucket with 28 seconds left and Ron Harper tore through OT and the Bulls advance.

Wrestlemania 37 Preview-Every Match in Mania History Ranked

Thursday, April 8, 2021

Wrestlemania 37 is this weekend from Tampa.  Fans in attendance for both nights; it's the first Peacock Mania (for historical purposes).

I'm old; I've seen each Mania in real time and have been doing these previews in one forum or another for a quarter century.  Here's this year's card.

NIGHT ONE:

WWF Title: Bobby Lashley (with MVP) vs. Drew McIntyre

-McIntyre won the belt a year ago; earlier this year he dropped to Miz (cashing in the briefcase after Lashley attacked Drew) who then dropped to Lashley.  I'd assume they look to give McIntyre the full babyface crowning moment in front of a crowd; the match will be fine and unlikely an ounce better than that.

(EDIT: 3 1/2 stars; it was good and they went the other way on the booking, deciding to keep Lashley strong. I see these guys as essentially interchangeable so thats fine.

Smackdown Women's Title: Sasha Banks (c) vs. Bianca Belair

-Banks beat her former partner Bayley last fall to take this belt which has been in existence since '16. Belair won the Rumble and here we are.  Belair's a babyface - and I'd guess gets that same result McIntyre gets; they go all the way with her and she takes the belt in a match that will be fine and maybe a little better than that.

(EDIT: 3 3/4 stars; they worked really hard and the match got over; somewhere along the line, probably when WWE started talking about "Wrestlemania moments" this show became less "here are athletes competing" and more "this is a really important moment in the life of the real person portraying this wrestling character" and your mileage may vary on how that plays.  They did the switch and it was the best match of Night 1)

RAW Tag Title: The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) (c) vs. AJ Styles and Omos

-The RAW tag belts have been commissioned since '02; as I mention in each of these quarterly previews, the lineal WWF tag belts are no longer active for some unknowable reason.  The New Day (which now is just Kingston/Woods, with Langston having split off for a singles run) is on their 4th reign with these belts, taking them a few weeks ago from The Hurt Business (Lashley's stable, Alexander/Benjamin had the belts, subsequently, they got kicked out of the stable which appears to have broken up).  AJ and his giant bodyguard will be taking those belts Saturday; there's nothing to indicate the giant bodyguard can work, but presumably they'll book around that and the match will, once again, be fine.

(Edit - Not much to this, more of a TV match, they did the switch)

Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins

-Night One is the lesser of the two nights, but there is one workrate match, its here.  Rollins is unused to the middle of the card, but he's currently running in place with a heatless gimmick.  Cesaro has apparently signed a new deal and is getting some semblance of a push; his winning here would make sense.  If they give it time, it's the best match of Night One.

(Edit- 3 1/2 And this was good and too short and Cesaro went over in a very important moment in his life
as a performer, apparently)

Bad Bunny and Damian Priest vs. The Miz and John Morrison

-Bad Bunny might get booed; WWE lost the ability to successfully manage fan reaction years ago (Cena was both their top attraction and overly pushed as a babyface, both things can be true) and in the before times would routinely find that the guys they really wanted to be cheered, despite a lack of in ring ability, would not get cheered.  They'll get some grace period this weekend, but it might not cover this match.  The babyfaces go over in a match that won't be terrible.

(Edit - 3 1/2 - the very top end of its possible outcomes; it was all performance "look at the moves we taught this celebrity" but the celebrity worked hard and the match hung together)

Steel Cage: Braun Strowman vs. Shane McMahon

-Strowman's the babyface, the story is that Shane keeps calling him dumb.  This match might be terrible.

(Edit - it wasn't terrible, I never need to see either guy again, but it was fine)

Tag Team Turmoil: Lana and Naomi vs. Dana Brooke and Mandy Rose vs. The Riott Squad (Liv Morgan and Ruby Riott) vs. Natalya and Tamina

(This was terrible)

-Winners will get to wrestle again in night two for the RAW tag belts; this will not be good.

So, night one is rough.  Shane, a celebrity, some of the lesser women on the roster - that's three matches that just will not be good and the only match with the potential for a top end is more likely to get limited time and be constrained by the house style.  Banks/Belair probably winds up as the match of the night.

(Edit - Pretty good; if they had doubled the length of Cesaro/Rollins and scrapped that terrible gauntlet match this would have been strong)

NIGHT TWO

WWE Universal Title: Roman Reigns (c) (with Paul Heyman) vs. Edge vs. Daniel Bryan

Business picks up in Night 2.  Regins has had the Universal belt (created in '16) since August (he pinned Strowman in a 3 way, Wyatt was the champ - spoiler, that dynamic might happen again here). Crowd reaction to Reigns will be interesting; as I mention in these quarterly previews, he's the most compelling character in North American wrestling post heel turn and that might lead to his entering the match as the fan favorite.  Edge won the Rumble - Bryan was able to wedge himself in the match; in storyline, he was able to get Reigns to tap out at Fastlane, but, Edge, serving as the referee, did not record the fall.  That led to an Edge turn; so he and Reigns are both heels here.  Bryan entering the program helped the story and really, really, just dramatically helps the match quality - this is really likely to be an excellent match. The only result that won't happen is Reigns taking a clean fall - I'd guess that Edge pinning Bryan to take the belt is the most likely result.

(Edit - 4 stars; really strong, the crossface spot in a 3 way Mania main event was everything. Reigns goes over strong.)

RAW Womens Title:  Asuka (c) vs. Rhea Ripley

-Asuka took the belt from Banks at Summer Slam; she's a babyface - it looked like we were going to do a Flair challenge here, but Charlotte either got pregnant or has Covid or is unhappy that La Sombra is gone - it's a little murky, but they brought Ripley up from NXT and she stepped in as the challenger; Ripley's likely to take the belt, the match should be good, we'll see what Ripley can do here.

(Edit-3 1/4 stars, Ripley did take the belt and it was fine.)

US Title: Riddle (c) vs. Sheamus

-Riddle's a shooter with a cringe worthy gimmick; he loses the belt here to Sheamus in what is likely a strong match.  This is the real US belt; Harley Race's belt - Riddle took it in February, pinning Morrison in a 3 way to take Lashley's belt (see how they do that?)

(Edit- 3 1/2 stars; this was a good hard hitting match (with one badly botched spot) in a good, hard hitting feud and Sheamus did take it - this run of workrate matches really suffered from being too short, this match was 10 minutes.)

IC Title: Big E (c) vs. Apollo Crews

-This is something called a Nigerian Drum Circle match; Crews has adopted some level of an African accent; Peacock is currently scrubbing old WWE content for perceived violation of contemporary racial attitudes (that's a bigger job than they appreciate).  This match might draw a raised eyebrow. Crews takes, I assume in what should be a good match.  Langston's had the IC since December, he took from Zayn, who is in the match right below.

(Edit - Crews did take in a match that was too short to be good, given a screwy finish)

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn (with Logan Paul)

Logan Paul is a YouTube celebrity; he means nothing to me and his likely interference will be grating.  Owens and Zayn are two of the best wrestlers in WWE, still, and have a deep, deep realtionship spanning multiple promotions and (heck) decades.  Zayn, as El Generico, was an all time great babyface and now, as the paranoid, half crazed heel, is one of the brighter spots on WWE television.  This is the match I'm most looking forward to all weekend and they'll have Paul be determinative in the finish, I'd guess as a babyface.

(Edit - 3 3/4 stars this was great, as great as a 9 minute match could be and it was the second best match of WM 37. Owens, clean.)

The Fiend (with Alexa Bliss) vs. Randy Orton

-This program is a tire fire.

(The match was pointless. But short.)

Women's Tag Titles: Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler (c) (with Reginald) vs. Tag Team Turmoil winners

-This is not going to be good.

(Edit - this match was not good)

So - Night Two is pretty strong; both the secondary belt matches are likely good, Owens/Zayn will be as good as the time allows; the title match is a can't miss and just don't watch those other two matches.

It's Wrestlemania 37 - big crowds expected for both nights, which will either be really welcome or distubring or both.  As I write this, Cole/O'Reilly from NXT Night 2 has yet to air; my guess is that will be the match of the week.
