Series 1-2

28. 1961 New York Yankees v. 101. 1949 Brooklyn Dodgers
11 Yankees teams have advanced; only one Dodgers team joins them and it's a Los Angeles team.  This Yankees team won the World Series; this Dodger team lost the Series, to, of course, the Yankees.

SP2 Newcombe (23)   130   5.7
SP3 Hatten (32)    99        .9
SP3 Branca (23)   94        .6

Cox/Jorgensen are platooning at third; Hatten's a lefty, Branca right handed, that's how the choice will be made if we see Game 3.

Yankees-Ralph Houk
LF Cerv (36)   124      1
C Howard (32)   153   5.6
CF Mantle (29)  206   9.9
RF Maris (26)    167   6.2
1B Skowron (30)  113  1.3
3B Boyer (24)     79     3.7
SS Kubek (25)    90    3.3
2B Richardson (25)  67  -1.2
P Stafford (22)   139   3.6

Bench:
C Blanchard (28)  168   3
LF Berra (36)       115    2.6
SP2 Ford (32)       115    6
SP3 Terry (25)      118    3.3

Yankees have platoons both behind the plate and in left field; you'll see those changes in Game 2. The pitching rotation is set.  Yanks are seed favorites, they have the WAR advantage at C (when Howard starts) 3B-LF (when Berra starts) RF-and games 2 and 3 at SP

1st: 22 year old right hander Bill Stafford gets the Game 1 call for the Yankees; 14-9 with a 2.68 ERA.  He hits Robinson in the ribs with the first pitch of the game; Robinson glowers at the mound and jogs to first base.  Is it going to be that kind of series?  Robinson's erased on a double play - and then Duke Snider homers to left.  Stafford walks Roy Campanella and Carl Furillo back to back, but that's all.  Dodgers 1 Yankees 0
1st: Preacher Roe is a 33 year old lefty, he takes a 1-0 lead to the Yankee Stadium mound, 1-2-3

2nd: Pee Wee Reese singles, that's all.
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: 1-2-3
3rd: With two out, Roe hits Stafford.  That's definitely a payback pitch for his hitting Robinson; Stafford just goes down to first and we'll see if that doesn't end it here.  The Yanks don't score.

4th: Reese singles with two out, he's got two hits, Stafford then walks Spider Jorgensen, but that's all.
4th: With one out, Mickey Mantle gets the Yankees first hit, but thats it.

5th: With one out, Stafford hits Hermanski - and now the Dodger dugout is up - shouting at Stafford; Elston Howard shouting back - this is a rivalry series and we are seeing tensions rise in the Bronx. Duke Snider follows with a single, but nothing results.
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Houk isn't messing around here - maybe sensing Stafford's frustration; he goes to the pen. 22 year old right hander Hal Reniff had a strong season, 2.58 ERA and he gets the ball. With two out he gives up Reese's third hit of the day, but that's all.
6th: 1-2-3; Roe has only given up the one hit.

7th: Roe draws a walk on a tough 3-2 call, but that's all.
7th: 1-2-3 -- Preacher Roe has retired 11 straight.

8th: 28 year old right hander Jim Coates enters, 1-2-3
8th: Boyer walks to open the inning - but that's all.  We head to the 9th.

9th: Shotton leaves Roe in to hit for himself and he singles with two out -- Robinson then works a walk, but thats it.  Bottom of the 9th.
9th: Yogi comes off the bench - Roe gets him but then Bob Cerv doubles; the Yankees have the tying run in scoring position.  Roe gets Howard -- and then they intentionally walk Mickey Mantle - they put the winning run on base.  2 on.  2 out.  Roger Maris is coming to the plate.  Shotton goes to the pen to get Jack Banta, a 24 year old right hander.  Banta gets two quick strikes on Maris - the Yankees down to their final strike - AND ROGER MARIS HITS A 3 RUN HOMER TO RIGHT FIELD.

The Dodgers walked Mantle to face Maris - and he walked them off - the Dodgers were one strike away from heading to Brooklyn up a game - instead, they're a game away from elimination.

Dodgers 1
Yankees 3
WP Coates
LP Roe

Preacher Roe gave up 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings on the road against the '61 Yankees and still lost.

Nice bullpen game for the Yankees, Reniff and Coates go 4 scoreless. Mantle reached twice and obviously, Maris was today's hero.

For the Dodgers, Robinson and Snider each reach twice, Snider homers, Roe reached twice and Reese had three hits.

Let's go to Brooklyn.

3B Cox (29)           68         .6
SP2 Newcombe (23)   130   5.7

1st: 23 year old right hander Don Newcombe stands on the Ebbets Field mound, the Dodgers really need to shake off that game one walk off loss, 17-8, 3.17 ERA, Johnny Blanchard is catching for the Yankees against the right hander and he opens with a double.  After an out - Mickey Mantle hits a rocket, a majestic shot to dead center to make it 2-0. That's all - but that might be plenty, Yankees 2 Dodgers 0
1st: 32 year old lefty Whitey Ford went 25-4 with a 3.21 ERA; he walks Furillo with one out, that's all.

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: After an out - Blanchard homers to put the Yanks up 3, an out later Mantle walks, the Dodgers are in trouble, Yankees 3 Dodgers 0
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: Moose Skowron singles to open it up, but it ends there.
4th: Furillo leads off with Brooklyn's first hit, after an out, Gene Hermanski wakes up this Ebbets Field crowd with a 2 run homer.  Maybe that shakes the Dodgers out of their end of game 1 malaise. After the second out, Hodges walks, we head to the 5th, Yankees 3 Dodgers 2.

5th: With one out, Blanchard reaches on an error, and then Berra singles - after the second out Maris walks to load the bases - but Newcombe works out of it.
5th: Robinson singles with one out - Reese then walks - and Carl Furillo hits a 3 run bomb to give the Dodgers the lead -- mighty roar in Brooklyn; the Dodgers score 5 in the last two innings and maybe this entire series has just turned around. After the second out, Hermanski singles and Snider walks, that's all.  Yankees 3 Dodgers 5

6th: Tony Kubek doubles and after an out Bobby Richardson singles.  Runners on the corners - Houk goes to the bench, Bob Cerv hits for Ford, he hits a sac fly, the Yanks draw closer, Yankees 4 Dodgers 5.
6th: Hal Reniff came up strong in relief in game one, he's back now.  1-2-3

7th: Jack Banta comes on for the Dodgers, battle of the bullpens now. 1-2-3
7th: 1-2-3

8th: 1-2-3
8th: After an out, Snider and Hodges walk, after the second out, Spider Jorgensen hits for the pitcher - and he walks,  Dodgers up a run, bases loaded - Jackie Robinson to the plate - can he give Brooklyn some needed insurance?  Jim Coates enters - the count goes to 3-2 --- and Coates strikes him out.

9th: Once again, the Yankees trail by a run in the 9th.  21 year old right hander Erv Palica comes on to close the door - he gets an out, the gives up a pinch single to Hector Lopez. - but he gets Blanchard to ground into a game ending double play and we're headed to a game 3.

Yankees 4
Dodgers 5
WP Newcombe
LP Ford

The Dodgers got 5 hits, but scored 5 runs and won.  Banta recovered from giving up the Maris homer in game one to throw 2 perfect innings in relief today. For the Dodgers, Robinson's reached 3 times, Snider 4. Reese has reached 4 times. Furillo reached 3 times today including that big home run; Hermanski also homered and reached twice. Hodges reached twice today.

For New York, Reniff and Coates again were scoreless from the pen, Blanchard homered and doubled, Mantle homered and he's reached 4 times.

One game for all if it.

2B Richardson (25)  67  -1.2
SP3 Terry (25)      118    3.3

1st: Here we go - Dodgers/Yankees, Yankee Stadium, winner take all.  25 year old RH Ralph Terry was 16-3, 3.15 ERA. 1-2-3
1st: The Dodgers counter with 32 year old lefty Joe Hatten was 12-8, 4.18 ERA, he walks Bob Cerv on four straight pitches and on the fifth pitch, gives up a base hit to Elston Howard; Mantle singles and it's 1-0, an out later, Skowron singles and it's 2-0.  Dodgers 0 Yankees 2

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Richardson singles with one out, that's it.

3rd: 1-2-3
3rd: Howard opens the inning with a double, but that's all.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Boyer and Kubek open the frame with singles, but that's as far as it goes.

5th: 1-2-3; 15 Dodgers up, 15 Dodgers down.
5th: With an out, Howard and Mantle walk back to back - after the second out, Skowron singles to right, Howard lumbers around third and is gunned down by a bullet throw from Snider -Campanella holding onto the ball after a vicious collision.

6th: Pee Wee Reese breaks up Terry's perfect game with a single - and Jorgensen singles on the next pitch.  Hatten bunts them both over and the Dodgers have the tying runs in scoring position for Robinson...who doubles to left center -- that's going to clear the bases and the Dodgers have tied it up in the 6th.  Dodgers 2 Yankees 2
6th: Richardson singles with two out and Houk calls on Yogi to hit for Terry - Hatten walks him.  2 on, 2 out - Cerv coming to the plate - and he singles to score a run. Howard then hits his second double of the game - that scores Yogi and it's 4-2.  Mantle's intentionally walked and the Dodgers go to the pen for Banta.  Maris hits a ball to the deepest part of right field - but Snider hauls it in.  Dodgers 2 Yankees 4

7th: Hal Reniff has now pitched in every game this series, yet to allow a run - he gives up a one out Furillo single, but that's all.
7th: Boyer singles with one out, that's all.

8th: Jorgensen walks, after two out Hermanski singles -- tying runs on base for Snider - but Reniff gets him and the Yankees are 3 outs from moving on.
8th: Erv Palica is the new Dodgers pitcher, he gives up a one out single to Cerv, but that's all.  Let's go to the 9th.

9th: The Yankee closer is 34 year old lefty Luis Arroyo, he had a helluva year - 29 saves, 15 wins, an ERA of 2.19 - it's his first appearance in the series and he needs just 3 outs.  He gets them.  1-2-3

Dodgers 2
Yankees 4
WP Terry
LP Hatten

Great series for Reniff - scoreless appearances in all 3 games; Cerv reached 3 times today, Mantle reached 7 times in the series; Howard doubled twice today, 3 hits.  Let's say Reniff and Maris are co-MVPs - Maris did not have a good series, he left 8 on base just today; but with the Yankees down to their final strike in game 1 he hit a 3 run walk off homer and no moment was bigger than that.

The '61 Yankees become the 12th New York Yankee club to move forward; they'll meet the winner of the next series featuring a battle of World Series Champions.

1st: 29 year old right hander Bruce Kison is on the Three Rivers mound, the Bucs need a win to stay alive; 13-7 with a 3.19 ERA, Scioscia did some shuffling today, and it pays off here, after an out Brad Fullmer, playing first against a LH in an NL park, doubled, Garret Anderson drives him home with a base hit. Fullmer sat in game one, in game 2 he homered, doubled, reached four times. Salmon reached 5 times in the series, Anderson 4 times. Kennedy 3 times today, didn't play in game one.  I'll say the MVPs are Washburn, for his 2 hitter in game one and then Fullmer, for being the big bat today.

Thats the the top half of Region 5:

1998 New York Yankees v. 1910 Chicago Cubs
1961 New York Yankees v. 2002 Anaheim Angels

To the bottom half we go - we'll see a Yankees team from the 40s take on an Oakland club from the early 70s, it's Oakland's last chance to move on. We'll see a Red Sox team from a hundred years ago take on a WW2 era Cardinals squad.  A Tigers team from the first decade of the 1900s faces a Yankee team from the 30s.  And the 1986 New York Mets meet a pre-Robinson Dodgers squad.
