Manning had 2 late TD scores to beat the '81 Niners.  Manning was the MVP in '04, he broke Marino's TD pass record.  The 2014 Broncos survived the top half of the region - here's a younger Peyton Manning in the bottom half.  In Rnd 2, the Colts took out the '71 Cowboys in OT.

Ton of Raiders here; Marcus Allen in the backfield - on the coaching staff, Shell (also an Oakland backup) Cunningham.  Also on that Chiefs staff are Herm Edwards and Mike McCarthy. KC is in the tournament because of the best defense in 1995.  29 year old Neil Smith, 28 year old Derrick Thomas combined for 20 sacks. Steve Bono is 33, 26 total scores, 10 picks. Elliott's 3 missed FGs in the playoffs got them bounced in the divisional round.  In rnd 1, they upset the 2nd ranked '68 Raiders 19-3.  That KC defense continued to dominate in round 2, they beat the '62 Lions 16-3, Neil Smith was Player of the Game in both contests.

The oddsmakers like that Chiefs defense to continue their roll here, they are 2 point favorites on the road in Indianapolis.  Lets go to the dome for the kick.

Sure looks insurmountable - just very little offense from either side, but Detroit has to be feeling a little desparate, down 9 and KC has the ball.

3/10 - Bono finds Anders, he makes his way to the 46 and a first down.
1/10 - There Goes Greg Hill Again -- Big Burst for Hill -- 38 yards, exploding to the Detroit 16 yard line and the 15th seeded Chiefs are about to book plane tickets to Indianapolis.
1/10 - Bono to Willie Davis, tip toeing on the sideline, knocked out at the 3 yard line.
1/goal - Allen --- he is Into the End Zone --- TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS -  Marchs Allen is in the end zone, there's less than 13 minutes to go - the Lions are down 16-0.

Lions at the 28

1/10 - Plum to Barr, 21 yards to the 49.
1/10 - Tom Watkins busts a 30 yard run to the KC 19, in just 2 plays the Lions are 50 yards downfield.

That's it - Detroit does not move the ball further, they do get a FG and with 8:31 left, it is 16-3.

KC at the 24, they look to take the air out of the ball - they do get a Lake Dawson 22 yard third down reception. But the Lions force the punt - with 4:13 left it is 16-3, Lions ball at their own 28,

They move down the field, taking most of the rest of the game, but the drive dies at the KC 11; the Chiefs take over and are able to run out the clock.

Final: Chiefs 16 Lions 3
Offense tough to come by here, just nothing at all for the Lions - the 15th seeded Chiefs head to the second region 5 semi.

We've seen the Baltimore Colts advance to Rnd 2, we've seen Denver Bronco Peyton Manning advance to Rnd 2 - but prime Peyton has yet to move on. The '04 Colts are seeded 6th in Region 5 based on the best offense in football.  Manning is 28, All Pro, 49 scores and 10 picks. 26 year old Edge ran for over 1500 yards.  32 year old Marvin Harrison and 26 year old Reggie Wayne combined for 27 scores.  The defense is not much, but they do have an All Pro, 24 year old Dwight Freeney with 16 sacks. Manning had 2 late TD scores to beat the '81 Niners.  Manning was the MVP in '04, he broke Marino's TD pass record.  The 2014 Broncos survived the top half of the region - here's a younger Peyton Manning in the bottom half.

Dallas is the top seed still standing in region 5 - the path is suddenly really clear all the way to the Sweet 16 - they look to keep that going here, 6 pt favorites.

1st Qtr
Colts at the 21.

1/10 Peyton Manning going deep on the very first play - 30 yards to Brandon Stokley - let's go - Manning, Dungy, Tom Moore have a lot of offense to fire at these Cowboys.

The drive stalls here - Colts have to punt - Dallas will start at the 12.

1/10 - Duane Thomas carries for 11.
1/10 - Walt Garrison for 1
2/9 - Roger Staubach finds Lance Alworth, brought down inches from the sticks.
3/1 - Thomas picks it up, Dallas at the 35.
1/10 - Calvin Hill for 4.
2/6 - Walt Garrison gets a yard, an offsides call on the next play gives the Cowboys the first down.
1/10 - 1 for Thomas
2/9 - Thomas is stopped at the line, Dallas's third third down of the drive.
3/9 - Staubach finds Reggie Rucker - Rucker's Dallas's 4th receiver, played in just 2 games - but he gets 15 here and the Cowboys are at the Colt 39.
1/10 - 2 for Garrison
2/8 - 4 for Garrison and another 3rd down.
3/4 - Staubach rifles a ball to Alworth, 11 yards and a first down at the 22.
1/10 - 3 for Garrison
2/7 - 1 for Thomas -- Dallas has run on every first and second down, passed on third, it's worked so far - here's another third down
3/6 - Staubach is flushed out of the pocket -- escapes -- Staubach has a first down - all the way at the Colts 9 yard line and it is a first down.
1/goal - Thomas gets a yard.
2/8 - Play action -- Staubach -- Garrison -- Walt Garrison wide open in the end zone --- TOUCHDOWN COWBOYS -- 17 plays, 83 yards, 10 minute drive -- Dallas ran on every single second down --- right up until they didn't, Walt Garrison catches the 8 yard Staubach pass on a play fake that fooled all of Indiana, and it is 7-0.

Colts at the 39.

1/10 - Manning to Edge -- James has nothing but grass -- 35 big yards for Edgerrin James, in one play the Colts are at the 26.  Dallas takes 10 minutes to methodically walk down the field and the Colts are at the 26 after one play
1/10 - Manning to Marvin Harrison, that's 8
2/2 - Edge picks it up and the quarter ends

2nd Qtr: Cowboys 7 Colts 0

2/6 - 2 for Thomas
3/4 - Staubach to Hill, Calvin Hill sliding for 17 - Dallas is at the Colts 40 yard line and they've come right back, running the ball on first and second down, Staubach with the big third down conversion.
1/10 - Hill, getting a lot of action here, 3 yards and an offsides on the next play makes it 2nd and 2.
2/2 - Thomas picks it up, Dallas at the 29.
1/10 - Garrison stopped at the line
2/10 - Calvin Hill breaks one - Calvin Hill breaks one - 20 yard pickup for Hill -- Hill is down at the 9 yard line!  First and goal for the Cowboys!  Calvin Hill, what a drive!

They go 3 and out - Cowboys get it back with 6 left in the half at their own 35, 7-7.

They get a first down on a Pass Interference call - they wind up at midfield punting away - touchback.

Colts go 3 and out.  Dallas starts at their own 47 and goes 3 and out, with a little less than 2 to go in the half it is Colts ball at the 14.

1/10 - Manning to Edge, Edge breaking tackles, its a 23 yard pickup, clock moving.
1/10 - Manning to Wayne, 8 yards, with 1:10 left, Colts call their second timeout.
2/2 - Incomplete

1/10 - Manning to Reggie Wayne -- big gainer, 19 yards, he gets out of bounds with 25 seconds left, 1st down for the Colts.
1/10 - Manning to Brandon Stokley -- he's down at the 5 yard line - Colts use their final timeout, 12 seconds left in the half.

That's as far as it goes - there's an incompletion and at the whistle a FG makes it 10-7.

3rd Qtr: Colts 10 Cowboys 7
Manning just rips off a series of big gainers to end the half in a FG - Dallas will open the second half at their own 36.

3 and out including a Dwight Freeney sack.

Colts at the 27.  Edge picks up a first down on the first play with a 12 yard run but then the drive stalls.

2 plays get 7 yards and on the third play Bob Lilly forces an Edgerrin James fumble - and the Cowboys take over at the Colt 38 yard line!  Huge play for the Dallas defense.

McNabb's 32, 25 total TDs and 11 picks. 29 year old Brian Westbrook scored 14 times.  The 13th seeded Eagles knocked out the 4th seeded '67 Colts in rnd 1.  This team won just 9 regular season games but they are here in the regional semi after knocking off the '00 Titans in round 2.

We've got an upset winner coming, the 13th seed against the 8th seed - whomever comes out of the top half of region 5 will have played above their seeding.  This game is a full pick 'em, lets go to Mile High.

2023 Royal Rumble Preview/Every Royal Rumble Match Ranked

Wednesday, January 25, 2023

Royal Rumble 2023 is Saturday from San Antonio.  Here's the card.

UNDISPUTED TITLE: ROMAN REIGNS v. KEVIN OWENS
RAW WOMEN'S TITLE: BIANCA BELAIR v. ALEXA BLISS
PITCH BLACK MATCH: BRAY WYATT v. LA KNIGHT
MENS RUMBLE MATCH
WOMENS RUMBLE MATCH

The Bloodline is a great program; I say some variation of this every quarter - I am predisposed to disliking long WWF talking segments; I understand them - I understand almost all drawn out wrestling angles, there's a lot of TV time to fill, once you hit a story that makes sense, moving away from that story can be challenging - but I'm a workrate guy, just stick two guys in the ring and let them fight, thanks -- but, the Bloodline is consistently good TV; the ability to absorb the Zayn/Owens multi-promotional story to give another set of legs to the Bloodline has just been so deftly handled, Zayn's performance is transencendent -- it is above the fold quality for each of these PPV previews.

Reigns, of course, has both of the WWE primary title belts; he may have taken one from Bruno, who can remember - and that's worked, at least for me as a consumer - they have created an all time dominant champion and good on them.  Reigns will still be champion at the end of the night in what should be a very good match against Owens.

(3 1/2 - good, the big postmatch angle, w/Zayn turning babyface completely subsumes the match)

As much as I like the Bloodline, I can't be bothered at all - I mean - at all - with the Bray Wyatt Multiverse, so whatever is going to happen in the lights out match and whatever convoluted finish will get Bliss the belt I just have zero thoughts about.  Belair/Bliss will probably not be good and there's not a circumstance where Wyatt/Knight will be good.  Do not watch those matches.

(Awful)

And then there are the two Rumble matches, which are good even when they aren't good, it's a near foolproof gimmick.  My working assumption is Ripley wins the women's match - who makes the most sense to win the men's is Zayn (in fact, of guys currently on the roster, only Zayn and Rhodes make sense, I'd say Austin/Rock would be my next two guesses).

(3 3/4 stars, mens match, 3 stars womens match, Cody and Ripley win, it's a high level men's Rumble, it's a run of the mill women's)

I've got a wrestling counterfactual I'm been writing for more than 15 years (I'm stopping at end of 2025, sunrise, sunset) a couple years ago I did a pre Rumble angle where Nakamura's stable kicked him out in violent fashion and he came back as the 30th entrant and whipped his former stablemates to win the Rumble.  If the Owens/Reigns match is before the Rumble - should the evening culminate in a Zayn win, that would not surprise (maybe he is supposed to sacrifice his chance to win...but he does not)

So, you watch this show - it's the Rumble, you watch the Rumble, and Reigns/Owens will almost certainly be good and also advance story.

I've seen every WWE/F PPV contemporaneously, because I'm old.  Here are my Rumble rankings, times are approx.
