Verlander did not pitch enough innings to start, maybe we see him in the bullpen.

McGraw's got a catching platoon.  Dunn is the utility man for the Giants, he's got a better bat than Gilbert so draws the first start, but that can be revisited.  Browne has been the starter in right, but he's also being replaced by a better bat.  Giants all RH rotation is set for the series.

Astros 8 Giants 5 -- Giants have the better seed, Astros a strong WAR advantage, but the Giants have the better starting pitcher each day and we just saw how the Phillies took advantage of that. Astros have the best positon player (Altuve)...I'll say Houston is the slight favorite.

GAME ONE

1st: Iron Man Joe McGinnity is the RH John McGraw sends to the mound for game 1; 33 years old, a record of 35-8, 1.61 ERA .  McGinnity broke in back in 1899 with the Orioles, he signed as a free agent during the '02 season with the Giants, won 31 games last year, leading the league and then led the league in wins this season. He'll finish his career with the Giants after the '08 season. He gives up a Marwin Gonzalez single, then picks Gonzalez off first - Jose Altuve then triples and scores on a Carlos Correa single. Astros 1 Giants 0
1st: Dallas Keuchel gets the game one start for the Astros; he's the only lefty starter we'll see for either club, 29 years old, 14-5, 2.90. He broke in with the Astros in 2012, won the Cy Young in 2015, his second All Star season was this year and next year is his last in Houston, he heads to Atlanta as a free agent. He gives up a Roger Bresnahan double, gets two outs, but then a Jack Dunn single scores a run.  Astros 1 Giants 1

2nd: Yuli Gurriel singles with one out, he's a career Astro, up in '16, 4th in the Rookie of the Year this year, that's all.
2nd: Dan McGann singles with one out; McGann broke in with Boston in 1896, the Giants picked him up during the '02 season, thoughout a 12 year big league career he led the league in being hit by pitch six times.  He'll finish his career in Boston in '08. That's all.

3rd: Gonzalez triples, his second hit of the day. Gonzalez came up in '12, this is his bustout year, he played all over the diamond, his OPS+ clears his career average by 40. He'll head to Minnesota as a free agent before the '19 season. After an out, Carlos Correa knocks him home with a base hit and the Astros have regained the lead.  Astros 2 Giants 1
3rd: Frank Bowerman is the RH half of the Giants catching platoon and he singles. Bowerman broke in with Baltimore back in 1895, became a Giant at the turn of the century, he'll be a part time catcher for 8 seasons for McGraw and finish up in Boston in 1909. Two out later Art Devlin walks, but Keuchel leaves it there.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: 1-2-3

5th: 1-2-3, McGinnity sets down 8 straight
5th: Bill Dahlen walks. Dahlen broke in back in 1891 with the Cubs where he spent the first 8 seasons of his career, all of his best seasons, including 1896 when he had an OPS+ over 150.  He heads to Brooklyn next and this is his first season as a Giant, traded for Charlie Babb and Jack Cronin. He'll retire as a Dodger in 1911.  It ends there.

6th: 1-2-3, McGinnity sets down 11 straight.
6th: Jack Dunn doubles to left with one out. Dunn only played 9 games at second during the season, so actually should not qualify to play that position for the tournament - he's only one game shy, and it is a 153 game season as opposed to 162, so a reasonable argument could be made to slide him in, but moving forward, if he plays it will be at short for Dahlen; primarily, he's the Giants backup third baseman, but has too much bat to sit, at least to start the series, but Billy Gilbert will be the second baseman going forward.  That's all Keuchel permits.

7th: One out single for Brian McCann; he's the LH half of the Astros catching platoon, with the Giants throwing all RH, he should start throughout the series. McCann broke in with the Braves back in 2005, made 7 NL All Star teams, all of the strong seasons in his career taking place as a Brave.  He'd spend 3 seasons as a Yankee and this is his first year in Houston, acquired for Jorge Guzman. He'll finish up back in Atlanta in 2019. McGinnity keeps the deficit at a run.
7th: Bowerman singles with one out, after the second out Roger Bresnahan singles.  This is his only season in the outfield, the balance of his Hall of Fame is spent behind the plate. Acquired in '02, he'll be a Giant through the '08 season for Red Murray, Bugs Raymond, Admiral Schlei. His last year is 1915 as a Cub. Keuchel then gives up an Art Devlin single -- that ties the game, and then a Sam Mertes double to score 2 -- and just like that it's the Giants who are on top here, 4-2. 26 year old RH Chris Devenski has a 2.68 ERA and he enters for the Astros to end the inning. Astros 2 Giants 4

8th: 1-2-3 -- big McGinnity inning.
8th: Dahlen singles with 2 out, steals second - and then scores on a Bowerman single. That's the insurance.  Astros 2 Giants 5

9th: Josh Reddick triples and then scores on an Alex Bregman groundout. Gurriel then doubles - that brings the tying run to the plate with just one out. But McGinnity gets the next two and it's done.

GAME TWO

1st: Back in Region 1 we saw the 1912 Giants advance; so far, there haven't been any players on both teams, full turnover in that 8 year span.  That ends here with 23 year old RH Christy Mathewson. 33-12, 2.03. Mathewson led the league in starts this year with 46. In a 17 year career, Mathewson led the league in wins 4 times, in ERA 5 times, in shutouts 4 times, in strikeouts five times.  Today he looks to drop the hammer on the Astros. 1-2-3
1st: Brad Peacock is not Christy Mathewson; 29 year old RH, 13-2. 3.00 -- came up with the Nats in '11, wound up with the A's and they moved him to Houston prior to the 2013 season along with Max Stassi for Jed Lowrie. This is easily his best season, through 2019 he has 34 career wins and 13 are right  now.  Dan McGann walks with one out, it ends there.

2nd: Mathewson walks George Springer - up in '14 where he was 8th in the Rookie of the Year, his first All Star appearance was this year, he'll have a top 10 MVP finish in 2019. Josh Reddick then singles and Alex Bregman reaches on error.  The bases are loaded - nobody out - Gurriel singles and it scores two. After an out, Peacock reached on a run scoring error, Gonzalez then singles home another run. Big, big inning for the Astros 4 Giants 0
2nd: Art Devlin walks with one out, he's a 24 year old rookie, he'll largely be the Giants third baseman throughout his tenure, he's sold to the Braves in 2012. Dahlen singles, and after the second out, Bowerman singles and the Giants are on the board.  Astros 4 Giants 1

3rd: Bregman walks with two out, that's all.
3rd: Mike Donlin singles.  This is his first year as a Giant; he came up as a Cardinal in 1899, he's a Red this year and is part of a 3 team trade that sends him to the Giants (headed out is Moose McCormick). He's here until 1911 when he's moved to Boston. Dan McGann singles, after an out, Mertes walks and the Giants have loaded the bases -- but it ends there.

4th: Gonzalez doubles with 2 out and he scores on a a Jose Altuve single. He came up in '11, All Star in '12 and '14.  Top 10 MVP finish in '15, top 5 in '16 and this year he was the AL MVP. Altuve then steals second and scores on a Correa single - the Astros are just whipping Mathewson today.  Astros 6 Giants 1
4th: 1-2-3

5th: Josh Reddick doubles.  He came up with Boston in '09, went to the A's and then Dodgers, and signed this year with Houston as a free agent. After an out, Gurriel singles - the Astros have sent a message.  Astros 7 Giants 1
5th: Donlin singles, that's all.

6th: Altuve singles and then back to back errors load the bases.  That's 4 Giants errors today. A Reddick groundout scores a run, a Bregman single scores another - the 5th Giant error scores a third.  Astros 10 Giants 1
6th: Houston's got an ace up their sleeve.  Literally.  34 year old RH Justin Verlander only pitched 34 innings for the Astros after coming over from Detroit at the deadline, so he's not eligible to start.  But he's in the pen and here he is with a 1.06 Houston ERA. Verlander came up in '05, Rookie of the Year in '06, top 5 in the Cy Young in '07 and '09. Cy Young and MVP in 2011 - 2nd in the Cy Young in 2012. 2nd last year and 5th this year - Houston acquiring him for prospects. Next year he'll finish 2nd in the Cy Young and in 2019 a 36 year old Verlander wins the Cy Young again. Billy Gilbert singles with 2 out, that's it.

7th: After an out, Gonzalez reached on the 6th Giant error, Altuve doubles, Correa walks and Houston has loaded them again.  Mathewson, just absorbing this beating, walks Springer and that's 11.  Gives up a single to Reddick and that's 13. It ends there for Matty, 25 year old lefty Billy Milligan enters and gets through it.  Astros 13 Giants 1
7th: 1-2-3

8th: The Giants 4th starter, Red Ames, enters, 4-6, 2.27 - 1-2-3
8th: 1-2-3, 7 straight for Verlander

9th: 1-2-3
9th: Gilbert singles with one out, but that's all.

Astros 13
Giants 1
WP Peacock
LP Mathewson

Peacock goes 5, Verlander goes 4 - the Giants commit half a dozen errors and Houston takes the great Mathewson to the woodshed.

For the Astros, Gonzalez has reached four times with a triple
Altuve reached 3 times today
Correa has reached 4 times
Springer reached twice today
Reddick reached 3 times today, 3 RBI, 3 runs scored
Bregman reached twice today

For the Giants..
Donlin reached twice in game 2
McGann reached twice in game 2
Bresnahan reached twice
Devlin has reached three times
Gilbert reached twice in game 2
Dunn reached twice
Bowerman has reached 4 times.

So - Houston earns the split on the road and now we shift to Texas for games 3 and 4.

GAME THREE

1st: Sold out crowd at Minute Maid Park for Game 3, series tied at 1.  Charlie Morton, a 33 year old RH takes the hometown hill. 14-7, 3.62. Morton  came up with Atlanta in '08, spent most of his career in Pittsburgh. This is his first year as an Astro, they signed him as a free agent. Next year will be his first All-Star appearance, he heads to Tampa in 2019 for the best year of his career at the age of 35, he's 3rd in the AL Cy Young. He gives up a first pitch Mike Donlin double and on the second pitch of the game Dan McGann singles home a run. The Giants take the very early lead in this pivotal game.  Giants 1 Astros 0
1st: 29 year old RH Dummy Taylor gets the call from McGraw - 21-15, 2.34 -- except for 34 innings in Cleveland, Taylor spends his entire 9 year career with the Giants. Up in 1900, he lost 27 games in 1901 -- 1-2-3

2nd: Jack Dunn is back in the lineup today, playing short, he singles with one out, moves to second on another out, and scores on a Billy Gilbert base hit.  This is Dunn's last year in the bigs, Gilbert finishes up in St Louis in five years. Giants 2 Astros 0
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: Donlin doubles, that's it.
3rd: Jake Marisnick singles, he's in the lineup at Houston with the DH in play - he broke in with Miami in '13, moved to Houston during the '14 season, this is the only year of his career he'll have a decent bat and he moves on to the Mets for the weird virus 2020 season. Gurriel follows with a single and then McCann singles to score a run.  Still no one out.  Taylor gets one but then gives up an Altuve single to score the tying run.  Giants 2 Astros 2

4th: Devlin singles and then Dunn reaches on an error - George Browne is in the lineup today as the Giants DH and his groundout scores the go ahead run and the Giants are back on top. After the second out, a second Astros error scores a run on a Warner groundout. Giants 4 Astros 2
4th: After two out, Marisnick walks and Gurriel singles, Taylor then hts McCann to load the bases and then walks Gonzalez and the Astros have cut the deficit again. Giants 4 Astros 3

5th: 1-2-3
5th: Reddick doubles with two out, but Taylor holds it there and the Giants hold that lead.

6th: 1-2-3, 7 straight for Morton
6th: With one out Gurriel reached on an error and then Brian McCann hits a two run homer - an enormous roar goes up throughout the city of Houston - a curtain call for the veteran backstop - the Astros have taken the lead here in game 3. Altuve singles after the second out, it ends here, Giants 4 Astros 5

7th: 1-2-3, 10 straight for Morton, the Astros need just 6 more outs to take control of this series.
7th: Springer singles, but Taylor strands him and it remains 5-4.

8th: Dan McGann singles. Bresnahan walks and the Giants have the tying run in scoring position with nobody out. Morton gets a double play -- but then Art Devlin doubles to tie the score; that ends Morton's day, it's Chris Devenski who comes on - he gers through it but we are all tied up.  Giants 5 Astros 5
8th: Taylor gets 2 - then walks Gonzalez and Altuve is safe on another Giants error -- big spot here and the lack of bullpen for the Giants shows up, Taylor's left in and gives up a tiebreaking single by Carlos Correa.  It's 6-5 Houston.  Taylor walks Springer to load the bases and that's where it ends.  Giants 5 Astros 6

9th: For the first time in the series we see Houston's closer, 26 year old RH Ken Giles, 34 saves and a 2.30 ERA. Giles was 4th in NL Rookie of the Year for the Phillies in '14, dealt to Houston in a 7 player deal last year. Can he finish off the Giants?

Browne opens with a single.  Tying run on base.
Bill Dahlen, the veteran is sent in to pinch run and he steals second. Tying run in scoring position with nobody out.
Gilbert grounds to the right side - Dahlen is now at third with one out - can the Giants find 90 feet to tie this up?
Warner grounds to second -- Altuve checks the runner and throws to first.  Two out.
3-2 count to Donlin...and he walks.

Runners on the corners for the Giants.  And then McGann walks and the Giants have them loaded up - down a run -- 2 outs - 9th inning -- in Game 3 with the series deadlocked.  Huge spot and Hinch is gonna go back to the pen for Luke Gregerson; 32 year old RH with a 4.57 ERA.

And he gets Bresnahan to ground to Bregman - to first - it's done.

1st: Joe McGinnity won game 1 - can he keep the series alive for the Giants? 1-2-3

2nd: Dunn singles, first hit of the day. This is his last start of the series, he's gunned down looking to steal and then Keuchel gets the second out. McGann then doubles and is driven home by a Dahlen single and the Giants have struck first.  Giants 1 Astros 0

8th: 1-2-3, 7 straight for Keuchel who has stiffened
8th: Gonzalez draws a one out walk, Correa a two out walk. But again - McGinnity leaves them on base.

9th: Chris Devenski comes on again for Houston, 3rd time in the series, Donlin singles with one out - but we will head to the bottom of the 9th, still 3-1.
9th: Reddick is first - he hits a foul pop to McGann.  One away.
Alex Bregman then laces a double to right center and the Astros bring the tying run to the plate.
Gurriel then punches a single to left center - Bregman comes around to score and now it is 3-2 with still just one out.

Does McGraw go to the pen?  He does not.

Brian McCann at the plate - he hit that 3 run jack in game 3 and he is the winning run.

He hits a scorcher -- right at McGann - Gurriel dives back -- McGann dives at him --- Double Play.

GAME FIVE

1st: Christy Mathewson got hit pretty good in his game 2 loss; he comes back here for Game 5, the pressure of the Polo Grounds upon him.  He gives up a first pitch single to Gonzalez, two outs later Springer singles, that's it.
1st: Brad Peacock got the first 5 and Justin Verlander the next 4 back in game 2 and you wonder if that's the plan today as well.  He gives up a one out McGann single and a 2 out Bresnahan walk. And nothing else.

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Gilbert draws a two out walk and when Bowerman doubles him home - it's the Giants who score first. Mathewson helps himself with a run scoring single to make it 2-0. Donlin then singles and that's all it is, but that's not nothing for game 5, Astros 0 Giants 2

3rd: Peacock had 7 at bats all year - one was a double and he doubles right now. After an out the Giant defense strikes again and Altuve is aboard - and then Carlos Correa ties this game with a bases clearing triple. Correa broke in two years and ago and won the Rookie of the Year at the age of 20. This year was his first (only, still) All Star nod, easily the best year of his still ongoing career. Mathewson gets the second out, then walks Reddick - but it ends here.  Astros 2 Giants 2
3rd: Bresnahan and Mertes walk, an out later Devlin doubles home the go ahead run and with 2 outs Gilbert singles home a 4th, the Giantw regaining the lead.  Astros 2 Giants 4

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Hinch has the early hook, 30 year old RH Collin McHugh with a 3.55 ERA makes his initial appearance in the series. 1-2-3

5th: After an out, Altuve singles and Correa walks and the Astros are in business - but Mathewson gets through it.
5th: After an out, Mertes and Devlin walk, Dahlen then doubles home a run - and with men on second a third a McHugh wild pitch scores another. After the second out, Bowerman singles home a third -- and the Giants are taking it to the Astros here in game 5.  24 year old RH Joe Musgrove ends the inning.  Astros 2 Giants 7

6th: 1-2-3 -- it is sure looking like McGraw is about to place his second team into the Round of 32.
6th: Bresnahan doubles with 2 out -- and then Sam Mertes hits a two run homer and there is jubilation at the Polo Grounds, the Giants are about to advance.  21 year old RH Francis Martes enters, he walks Devlin but that's all.  Astros 2 Giants 9

7th: 1-2-3, 7 straight for Matty, and the Astros are cooked.
7th: 1-2-3

8th: Correa doubles, Springer singles and Houston scores on a groundout. That's all.  Astros 3 Giants 9
8th: Donlin singles - that's it and we head to the 9th.

9th: Jake Marisnick, hitting for the pitcher, singles.
Gonzalez singles, Marisnick is at third -
Altuve goes 6-4-3 -- it scores a run, but there's just one out to go.
Correa singles.
Mathewson strikes out Springer and it's done.

Astros 4
Giants 9
WP Mathewson
LP Peacock

Mertes and Devlin both reached 3 times today, Mertes hitting that big homer.  That means Devlin reached 9 times in the series.  But the MVP has to be McGinnity, two complete game wins.
