The best defense from 1992 was in New Orleans led by the linebacker quartet that all made the Pro Bowl.  28 year old Pat Swilling was All Pro, with 10.5 sacks; 34 year old Rickey Jackson had 13.5 and on the line, Wayne Martin's 27, and had 15.5 sacks. The offense is just okay, Bobby Hebert is 32, 19 scores and 16 picks.  In the play in Rnd, Hebert threw for 3 scores against the '56 Lions.  We haven't seen a 16 team beat a 1 --- safe to say it would be a suprise here, it's hard to see a path to a Saints win, the defense needs a total shutdown of that Redskins offense.

Let's go to RFK for the kick - Region 4 is underway with contemporaries batting it out.  Early 90s showdown.

First Qtr

The Saints will start at the 23.

1/10 - Vaughn Dunbar gets the first carry of the game and goes for 9.
2/1 - Hebert keeper, picks it up.
1/10 - Dunbar again and he busts one -- 36 big yards - the Saints are all the way to the Washington 31.

The next 3 plays net 7 yards - that leads Morten Andersen to hit a 41 yard FG and the Saints are up with a little less than 5 minutes off the clock.

Washington at the 24.

1/10 - Ricky Ervins gets the first carry for the '91 Skins in the tournament, he goes for 1.
2/9 - Ernest Byner is next, 1.
3/8 - Mark Rypien finds Art Monk - it's 11 and the first.
1/10 - Byner takes a pitch, goes around right tackle for 8.
2/2 - Here's Gerald Riggs for a carry, he gets 5 and the first right at midfield.
1/10 - Rypien again - to Gary Clark and that's 23 yards to the 27.
1/10 - Rypien to Byner out of the backfield for 2.
2/8 - Rypien to one of the TE, it's Frank Warren for 6 and third and short.
3/2 - Rypien finds Art Monk deep down the sideline - he taps his feet in bounds for a 28 yard gain and a 1st and goal at the 3 yard line.
1/10 - It's Ricky Ervins right behind Joe Jacoby -- and it's easy money.  TOUCHDOWN REDSKINS - 12 Plays, 76 yards, 7 minute drive - Washington does what we expected them to do.  7-3.

Saints at the 33.  3:08.

The first play is a short Dunbar run.

The second play is a pick.  Darrell Green takes the ball away from Eric Martin, and the Redskins are in business at the Saints 39.

1/10 - Ervins for 6.
2/4 - Ervins for 13.
1/10 - Ernest Byner goes right up the gut - Jeff Bostic clearing the way - no cuts needed  Byner just blows by the defense and he is gone - TOUCHDOWN REDSKINS less than 3 minutes ago, it was 3-0 Saints and now it is not.

Saints at the 30.

Ironhead Heyward for 2.

Hebert screen to Dalton Hilliard - he picks up some blocks and heads down the sideline - Hilliard getting 39 big yards on the last play of the quarter.

2nd Quarter
Number one offense, number two defense - you'd expect both units to perform in round one and we're seeing it so far.  14-3 Washington.  Saints have a first down at the Washington 29.

The next 3 plays lose 2 yards, Charles Mann with the sack on third down.  Andersen hits a 48 yarder and it's 14-6.

Washington starts at the 9 after a holding call.  It's 1st and 19.

1/19 - Byner for 3.
2/16 - Riggs for 6.
3/10 - Rypien finds Monk again, 13 yards and the first down.
1/10 - Ervins loses a couple
2/12 - Rypien's first incomplete pass of the day.
3/12 - Rypien to Byner, flashing over the middle - Byner is on the move - Byner for 16 yards out to the 45 for the first.
1/10 - Ervins for 1
2/9 - Byner for 3
3/6 -Third third down conversion of the drive, Rypien to Gary Clark, it's a 9 yard gain and the Redskins are at the Saint 42.

The drive ends there, nothing from the next 3 plays and it's a punt.

Saints at the 11.  3 and out.  Brian Mitchell gets the good return - Skins will take possession at the New Orleans 38 yard line, 3:20 left in the half.

1/10 - Byner for 6.
2/4 - Byner for 1, it'll be 3rd down after the 2 minute warning.
3/3 - Rypien to Terry Orr - that's a 10 yard pickup to the 21 yard line.

Back to back sacks by Wayne Martin/Pat Swilling make the Chip Lohmiller FG attempt a long one, 49 yards - and he misses it.

Just time for a couple of Saints plays, one of which is a Wilber Marshall sack, and the half ends.

Third Quarter

14-6 Washington, both Redskin scores came late in the first quarter, nothing here that looks like a 16 seed is about to knock off a 1.

The Redskins start at the 36.

3 and out - Swilling with his second sack, Saints will get good field possession at their own 42.

1/10 - Heyward for 7.
2/3 - Hilliard swarmed in the backfield for a loss.
3/7 - Hebert to Torrance Small for a 10 yard first down.
1/10 - Hilliard for 1
2/9 - Dunbar loses 1.
3/10 - Hebert converts again, 13 yards to Quinn Early and the Saints, down 6, are at the Washington 32 yard line.

The next 3 plays lose 8 yards, Charles Mann with his second sack - Jim Mora decides not to go for the 57 yard FG and instead the Saints, down 8, punt.

Redskins at their own 13.  7:15 in the third.

1/10 - Byner busts one - Ernest Byner goes for 37 big yards and Washington is at midfield.
1/10 - Riggs for 3.
2/7 - Rypien going deep - Rypien deep down the middle of the field to Gary Clark - he catches it in stride and he is in the endzone - TOUCHDOWN SAINTS - big sequence there, the punt for the Saints from the Washington 40 and just 3 plays later it's 21-6 which feels like too much deficit for the Saints to overcome today.

Saints at the 29.  5:28 left in the qtr

1/10 - Heyward for 1.
2/9 - Hebert 14 yards to Early.
1/10 - Heyward for 3 - an offsides gives NO 5 more.
2/2 - Hebert to Eric Martin, he had such a big play in game - but Darrell Green has totally shut him down, he gets 6 here.  Saints at the Redskin 42.
1/10 - Back to Martin - it's a big one - 27 yards and the Saints have a first down at the 15.

The next 3 plays net 4 yards.  Saints chip shot FG.  21-9.

Redskins start at their own 17, Byner 6 yard gain as the qrt ends.

4th Quarter

Washington up 21-9, with the ball at their own 23.  2nd and 4.

Washington picks up the first on a 6 yard Byner run, but the drive dies, the punt leaves the Saints starting at their own 44.  12:07 left.

Martin Mayhew picks off Hebert's on the next play.  Washington at the New Orleans 48 and that might be that.

1/10 - Ervins for 4.
2/6 - Byner for 3.
3/3 - Rypien to Gary Clark for 11 yards to the Saints 30.
1/10 - Byner stopped at the line.
2/10 - Rypien sacked by Wayne Martin, it's his second sack of the day.
3/15 - Rypien turns it loose - throwing to the end zone -- and finding Gary Clark -- TOUCHDOWN REDSKINS - and that's that -- 28-9 Washington and the Redskins will match into Rnd 2.

Saints at the 18.  8:20 left.

The Saints get a first down on a 13 yard Hebert to Small - but the drive ends with a Matt Millen interception.  Washington takes over at the Saints 30 yard line.  7:09.

2 run plays - on the third, Ricky Ervins fumbles - the Saints recover at their own 16 yard line.  5:43 left.

They'll get a first down, Hebert 23 yards to Hoby Brenner - but the drive ends on Hebert's 4th interception of the day - Darrell Green's second pick.  Washington at the New Orleans 46, 4:06 left.

Washington runs the ball every play, Gerald Riggs picking up a 37 yard gain - the drive ends in a short Chip Lohmiller FG.  31-9.

Hebert throws a bomb - one last Int - it's Brad Edwards and the game is over.
