Clint Capela's 5th foul brings in Tarik Black off the bench, he scores a couple late buckets and the Rockets cut the deficit to 5.

Summer Slam 2021 Preview

Summer Slam is Saturday (Saturday?) fromVegas.

On Sunday, NXT has a real possibility to give us one of the great WWE PPVs of all time; I have Walter/Dragunov 2020 as the best match in WWE history and the blow off to Cole/'Reilly (which, given Cole's status really might be the blow off) is really likely to be an epic battle.  Add the return of Joe and it's a show I'm really looking forward to.

On the other hand...

1 WWE Universal Title: Roman Reigns (c) (with Paul Heyman) vs. John Cena

-Reigns has been Universal Champ for a year; the 3 champs prior were (1) Wyatt, who is gone (2) Strowman, who is gone (3) Goldberg, who is in his 50s, wrestles twice a year and is also fighting for a title on this card.  Reigns is the best act in North American wrestling; for me, Cena just offers nothing; he's getting fed to Reigns as "monster babyface who will fail to upend the bad guy champ" as we (presumably) steam toward Reigns/Rock at Mania.  I get using Cena here; he's the promotion's biggest post Attitude Era star (albeit presiding over the steady drifting away of the fan base, this, I'd argue is not coincidence) but it reflects just an enormous creative failure that middle aged retired guys need to come in to main event your PPV.  It's not a talent failure; they have so much talent in the promotion they can throw Tommy End away and barely notice; the failure is entirely creative.

(3 1/4 stars, 23 minutes, it was exactly as expected, I just never need to see another minute of John Cena)

2 WWE Title: Bobby Lashley (c) (with MVP) vs. Goldberg

-The lineal WWF title is held by Lashley; he took it from the Miz (really?) just before Mania.  The story is the same; conquering babyface veteran Hall of Fame hero returns to slay monster heel champion and the outcome will also be the same.  I don't know who we're building Lashley for, maybe Brock; maybe Batista if there's a deal to be struck.  This match will be short; Goldberg wasn't my flavor when he was over and that decade began with a 9.

(Extended Lashley squash)

3 RAW Women's Title: Nikki A.S.H. (c) vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley

-Charlotte's fiancee (and probably father) are working the AEW PPV in a couple of weeks; she's the heel here taking on two babyfaces (which seems like a weird handicap match, but they do what they do).  Nikki Cross is doing a superhero gimmick that is entirely for children; she took the belt from Charlotte a month ago - I'd guess she's giving it back with Ripley there to eat the fall so Nikki can chase.

(3 stars, 13 minutes, Charlotte takes)

4 Smackdown Women's Title: Bianca Belair (c) vs. Sasha Banks

-Belair took in the all babyface match at Mania that is better remembered as a "moment" than a "match" (it was fine). Here's the rematch - maybe, there might be a Covid issue here.  You probably move the belt back here and again have the babyface Belair chase.  Lynch is returning at some point; I'd assume on whichever show it is Rollins is on.

(They brought back Lynch and she squashed Belair)

5 RAW Tag Title: AJ Styles and Omos (c) vs. RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Riddle)

-Something I note in each of these quarterly previews is neither the RAW tag belts nor the Smackdown tag belts are the lineal WWF tag belts for absolutely no good reason.  These belts are now nearly 20 years old, however, Styles and his giant untalented bodyguard took the belts from the New Day at Mania and probably lose them here to Orton/Riddle, doing a fun mismatched partner act.

(Short, switch)

6 Smackdown Tag Title: The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) (c) vs. Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio

-These belts aren't even 5 years old; the Usos took from the Mysterios in May - Rey is one of the truly great wrestlers who ever lived; his son is green; the Usos are part of the Reigns heel act and I'd expect they keep here.

(Usos did keep; it didn't quite make 3 stars)

7 US Title: Sheamus (c) vs. Damian Priest

-This is the lineal US belt; Harley Race's belt, Ric Flair's belt, Sheamus is the 171st US Champ; he took from Riddle at Mania and probably drops to the babyface Priest here in like 6 minutes.

(3 stars, 14 minutes, Priest)

8 Edge vs. Seth Rollins

-Is this the best match of the night?  Probably - Reigns/Cena will get every chance to be, long, lots of nearfalls, but if there's a 4 star match on this card, it's this one.  Edge entered Mania as a heel, but is now again the veteran babyface; Rollins' loud jacket grating laugh heel character is stronger with the violent edge (pun intended) it's the first match of what would make sense as a longer program, so a Rollins win would be expected.

(4 stars, 21 minutes, Edge, match of the night, not close)

9 Drew McIntyre vs. Jinder Mahal

-Is this the worst match of the night?  Not if you look below to #10; McIntyre is the babyface former champ, Jinder is bad.  I'd assume McIntyre beats him and they move on.

(Drew, actively bad)

10 Eva Marie (with Doudrop) vs. Alexa Bliss

(Bliss, actively bad)

-Yikes.

So, that's Summer Slam; an entirely skippable show; with Punk/Danielson presumably on the horizon (and given the location of this week's Rampage, that horizon is closing hard) for AEW, I don't know, maybe WWE might want to almost entirely overhaul their main roster product.

(Biggest pop I ever saw; if there was anyone in WWE unaware this was a wrestling war, they know it now)

Every Summer Slam match is ranked here.  Ratings are mine, times are approx. I may have missed some.  Don't care.
