Two spots remain in Region 15 - this 7/10 winner will claim one of them - the '64 Colts had the best offense in football and the best defense in football.  The Great Unitas is 31, 21 scores and 6 picks in 14 games. He's an All Pro as is 31 year old Lenny Moore; in a dozen starts he scored 19 TDs.  30 year old Jim Parker is also an All Pro.  Defensively, 37 year old Gino Marchetti and 27 year old Bobby Boyd, with his 9 picks, are All Pros.

The only franchise with 11 teams currently headed to round 2 has a chance to make it 12; the '98 Niners who had the 3rd best offense in football.  37 year old Steve Young had 42 scores and 12 picks. Over 2000 yards from scrimmage for 27 year old Garrison Hearst. Both 36 year old Jerry Rice and 25 year old Terrell Owens had over a thousand yards receiving. The defense can get home, 36.5 combined sacks for 37 year old Chris Doleman, 29 year old Roy Barker, 26 year old Bryant Young.  

The Niners head to Baltimore to take on Shula's Colts, let's go to the kick.

1st Qtr
Colts at the 25.

1/10 - Lenny Moore for 5.
2/5 - 4 more for Moore.
3/1 - Tony Lorick busts an 11 yard run, Colts at the 45.
1/10 - 2 for Moore.
2/8 - Johnny Unitas's first pass is a 16 yard gain to Jimmy Orr, 16 yards to the Niner 37.
1/10 - Unitas quick out to Ray Berry for 3 yds - the next two plays are 5 yard Colt penalties.
2/17 - Nothing for Jerry Hill.
3/17 - Unitas to Lenny Moore - Moore - move after move after move -- 19 yards and a  first down.  

The drive ends here and when the Colts miss a FG a drive that took half the first qtr comes up empty.

Niners at the 36 - 3 and out including a Gino Marchetti sack.  

Colts get a good Wendell Harris return, they've got the ball at the Niner 43.

They get a first down, Unitas to John Mackey, 10 yards.  But the drive ends in a Chris Doleman sack - and the Colts are forced to punt.

Niners at the 14.

They get a first down, Steve Young 33 yards to Garrison Hearst - but Young gets sacked two more times, by Fred Miller and Billy Ray Smith, the Niners punt.  

Colts at the 35, they gain 3 yards on first down and the quarter ends.

2nd Qtr: Colts 0 Niners 0
4 sacks, three from the Colts, and we are scoreless.  2nd and 7 for Baltimore at their own 38.

2/7 - Jerry Hill for 1.  
3/6 - Unitas finds Jimmy Orr for 16, Colts at the 45.
1/10 - Lorick finds a hole and goes for 17 yards.  
1/10 - Hill gains 5.  
2/5 - Unitas to Moore - Lenny Moore scampering, Lenny Moore -- Moore Has Space -- Lenny Moore is Gonna Go Into the End Zone -- TOUCHDOWN COLTS - 23 yards from Unitas to Lenny Moore, tremendous play - Colts go up 7-0.

Niners at the 26.

1/10 - 5 yards for Garrison Hearst.
2/5 - 2 for Terry Kirby.
3/3 - Hearst picks it up.
1/10 - Marchetti's second sack - the Colts get to Young for the 4th time.  Niners 2nd and 18 at the 30.
2/18 - Young to Jerry Rice - 10 yards.
3/8 - Young to JJ Stokes, 10 yards and the Niners are at midfield.  
1/10 - Kirby is stopped.
2/10 - Young to Terrell Owens, the Niners have 3 pass catchers who can hurt you - 6 yards.
3/4 - Young to Owens again, 9 yards, the Niners are at the Colts 35.

But --- the drive ends --- Young is sacked again, Fred Miller gets his second, the Niners miss a long FG and with 3 and a half minutes left in the half, the Colts have the ball at the 39.

1/10 - 18 yards for Hill.
1/10 - 8 for Lorick - the Colts ground game dominating today. Baltimore really controlling both lines of scrimmage.  
2/2 - Moore gets a yard.
3/1 - Moore gets 3, that's the 2 minute warning, Colts at the Niner 31.

2/2 - Unitas to Lorick, 8 yards.
3/2 - Give to Hill --- Jerry Hill breaks a tackle and he's going to go -- Into The End Zone --- TOUCHDOWN COLTS - Jerry Hill 23 yard run to paydirt -- the Colts have a 14-0 lead with 75 seconds left in the half.

3 and out for the Niners including the 6th - that's the 6th Colts sack, Gino Marchetti with the hat trick and you can see the pain all over the face of the 37 year old Steve Young.

3rd Qtr: Colts 14 49ers 0
Baltimore is really manhandling the Niners, 6 sacks, the Colts imposing their will.

Niners at the 21.

1/10 - A dozen for Hearst.
1/10 - Young to Greg Clark, 6 yards.
2/4 - Incomplete
3/4 - Young across the middle to Terrell Owens, Owens racing for a 17 yard gain and the Niners cross midfield.
1/10 - Young in trouble - huge pressure, Young escapes -- Young running - Steve Young scrambling for 14 yards and the Niners are at the 30.
1/10 - Terry Kirby for 14 and the Niners are at the 16.
1/10 - Hearst -- Garrison Hearst Is Through the line - and he is Into the End Zone -- TOUCHDOWN 49ERS -- San Francisco goes 79 yards to open the second half and it is a 14-7 game.

Colts at the 21 - on the third play Tim McDonald forces a Tony Lorick Fumble -- and the Niners have the game's first turnover - Niners at the Colts 41 yard line, the momentum of the game shifting in the third qtr.

San Francisco gets 1 first down - Young throwing the pretty downfield ball to JJ Stokes, a 27 yard gain that gave the Niners first and goal.

But Billy Ray Smith sacked Young -- the 7th - 7th sack, and the Niners settle for the Wade Richey FG.  14-10.

Colts at the 36.

They get 1 first down, 8 yard Lenny Moore run the biggest play - but the drive ends in a punt - San Francisco starts at the 20, a minute left in the third.

1/10 - Young in trouble -- all game - Young in trouble, he gets free and goes for 10 yards, first down. 
1/10 - Hearst gets 9 yards, the quarter ends.

4th Qtr: Colts 14 49ers 10
The game shifts, Baltimore has 7 sacks- but the Niner offense is moving now, they cut the deficit to 4 and open the 4th at their own 39, 2nd and 1.

Young goes to Hearst, Hearst breaks free - it's a 29 yard pickup for Garrison Hearst - San Francisco at the 32 yard line.

2/9 - Hearst again - 13 yards for Hearst, San Francisco at the 18 yard line!

3/10 - Young - Rice -- Rice breaks a tackle -- Rice --- Jerry Rice Is Going Into the End Zone -- TOUCHDOWN 49ERS -- San Francisco has come all the way back - 17 straight points, there's a 68 yard TD drive and the Niners take the lead 17-14.

Colts at the 28.

1/10 - 4 for Lorick.
2/6 - Moore stopped in the backfield.
3/7 - Unitas finds John Mackey and he's not going to be brought down -- Mackey dragging Niners defenders 34 yards to the San Francisco 34 yard line.
1/10 - 5 for Moore.
2/5 - 14 yards for Tom Matte on his first carry of the day.

But -- the drive stalls, Roy Barker gets a sack - Baltimore settles for a game tying Lou Michaels FG.

There's 7 minutes left.  17-17.

Niners at the 29.

1/10 - 1 for Hearst.
2/9 - 1 for Kirby.
3/8 - Young -- finds Irv Smith downfield, 22 yards - the Niners cross midfield.  5 minutes left.
1/10 - Young - Rice -- 10 yards to the 37.  Niners nearing FG range.
1/10 - Young - Rice -- 18 yards - Young moving the Niners right down the field, San Francisco at the Baltimore 19 yard line.

The drive ends here - Richey hits the FG.  With not much more than 2 minutes to play, San Francisco has the lead.  20-17.

The Colts mishandle the kick - they are starting at their own 5 yard line.  Unitas has a little more than 2 minutes to go most of the field just to force OT.  

1/10 - Draw to Moore, goes nowhere, 2 minute warning.
2/10 - Incomplete.
3/10 - Unitas finds Ray Berry - he's got 9 yards, the Colts are short of the first down, they use their first timeout.  

So - 4th and 1 for Baltimore at their own 14, they trail by a FG.  They're going for it.

4/1 - Unitas drops back- - and he is buried by Bryant Young -- BY shooting through the line and dropping Unitas!  The 49ers take over at the 10 yard line, 1:42 to play.  Up by a FG.

1/goal - Hearst -- Garrison Hearst busts through the line -- Garrison Hearst Is Into The EndZone --- TOUCHDOWN 49ERS -- the 49ers go up 27-17 - 49ers with the 10 point lead with 90 seconds left in the game.  

Colts at the 24.

1/10 - Unitas.  Going Deep -- He Finds Ray Berry - 43 yard pickup - Baltimore uses their second timeout at the Niner 33.
1/10 - Unitas to Moore, he's got 10, out of bounds at the 23, 69 seconds left.

2/10 - Incomplete
3/10 - Incomplete.  Last gasp for the Colts, 51 seconds left to play, 4th and 10.
4/10 - Unitas -- finds Jimmy Orr - Orr's got the first down -- Orr brought down at the 49er 5 yard line - Baltimore uses its final timeout, there's 40 seconds left in the football game, first and goal at the 5.
1/goal - Unitas - End Zone -- Mackey -- TOUCHDOWN COLTS - It takes only a minute, Unitas goes 76 yards and it is 27-24.

30 seconds left.  Baltimore has no timeouts - they needed a near miracle - and now need an onside kick.

Lou Michaels stabs at the ball - it takes the big bounce -- RAYMOND BERRY RECOVERS THE KICK!  THE COLTS HAVE THE BALL! THE COLTS HAVE THE BALL!

Raymond Berry recovers the kick - Baltimore is at their own 43, they need just a FG to improbably send this game into OT.

1/10 - Unitas to Hill --- he's going to get 10 yards, he can't get out of bounds -- Unitas runs to the line and spikes the ball - Colts at the San Francisco 47, there are 14 seconds left in the game.  Baltimore has no timeouts -- they have to get at least another 10 yards - at least - 
2/10 - Unitas -- Unitas -- He is Sacked By Chris Doleman!  Doleman sacks Unitas - the Clock will Expire and San Francisco Holds On.

Final: 49ers 27 Colts 24
The Colts get to Young 7 times, but it's a Chris Doleman sack of Unitas that ends this one and moves the 12th San Francisco team forward to round 2.
