1st: Jack Coombs was co-MVP of the A's round one win and he gets the ball to kick off Region 8. 31-9, 1.30. Coombs is a 27 year old RH. Coombs was on that 1909 team that advanced, but I don't believe we discussed him. He broke in in '06, by all measure, this is his career season (you win 31 games with a 1.30 ERA, one would assume it's your best year) 6 years later he's in Brooklyn and Coombs finishes in '20 as a Tiger. Gene Woodling singles, Yogi singles - Coombs gets one, but then walks Gil McDougald to load the bases and when he throws a wild pitch, the Yanks are on the board. 1st: 33 year old lefty Eddie Lopat is staked to that lead. 21-9, 2.91. Lopat's on the '53 and '54 teams that have advanced, this year was his only All Star appearance. Danny Murphy reaches on a one out error, after the second out Bris Lord singles, that's it.

2nd: Ira Thomas singles with one out, Thomas broke in with the Yankees, moved to the A's last year and spends the rest of his career in Philadelphia. In '11, he will finish 8th in the MVP and he stops in '15. After the second out, Coombs singles and Rube Oldring walks, that's all.

9th: Gene Woodling walks. Woodling moves to second on a passed ball, moved to third on an out - and scores on a Collins groundout. McDougald then singles - the inning ends. Yankees 7 A's 0
9th: 33 year old RH Johnny Sain is on to wrap this up. 19 year old Stuffy McInnis comes up to hit for Coombs, he singles. Rube Oldring follows with a double and Danny Murphy singles to score a run. A Collins groundout scores a second run. Sain gets another out - then gives up a base hit to Home Run Baker, and a run scoring single to Barry and now it's 7-3. He gives up a 2 out single to McDougald - and then Jackie Jensen, in the lineup again today ahead of both Mantle and DiMaggio - hits a 2 run homer. 9th: 25 year old RH Jimmy Dygert is on to close the door; Joe Collins is the pinch hitter for Stengel and he reaches by error. Dygert gets an out - but then walks both Berra and McDougald and now the bases are loaded and it's the Yankees threatening a 9th inning comeback.
