Alaska had an official Heathcare Decisions Day proclaimed in the spring of '08, designed to promote end of life counseling.
That's the beauty of the written word, no matter how many people shout the Pledge of Allegiance (which has to do with universal health care...how?) it can't drown out some facts.
Like this study which says that between 2000-06 137,000 Americans died because they didn't have health insurance.
Or a little more than half of all the Americans killed during World War II. Which seems like an appropriate comparison given all the Nazi talk.
Freedom from want was the third of the four human freedoms articulated by FDR in January of '41 - we sit here in 2009 allowing the right wing lunatic fringe to make freedom from want a debatable notion; the same group that fought social security, fought the minimum wage, fought civil rights legislation, fought any regulations on corporate power, now fights the right that all Americans should claim as a matter of birth - the same right held by citizens of virtually every other industrialized nation on the planet -
The right to health care. The right not to die because of lack of health insurance. The right not to have your health entirely controlled by the whims of your employer.
Don't let them win.
You took power last November - power from the people who stole the 2000 election and lied their way into war; power from the people who torture, who spy on Americans, who reject habeas corpus as an antiquated notion. In overwhelming numbers, the world view that gave us temporary corporate profit above all - the world view that proximately caused the global economic meltdown that has placed almost all of us in constant precarious positions where with the flick of an employer's pen we could find ourselves as just another uninsured statistic - that world view was rejected.
The people you see at the town halls screaming - waving their bibles - shouting the Pledge of Allegiance - yelling about Nazis and tyrants and death panels --
They're the same people yelling about Obama not being a real American. About losing their country.
They lost in November.
Don't let them win now.
(Edit - I don't know how long it will be up, but this is Jon Stewart exposing the naked demagoguery of Simple Jack on last night's Daily Show. A mistake the left makes is giving these guys the benefit of the doubt - sure, we say, they're wrong, but it's an honest debate. It's not. It's not an honest debate. The World Health Organization ranks the US 37th in health care. We know this; anyone who has had to fight an insurance company knows this; Simple Jack knows this too - or did a year ago before he forgot it in the past few weeks.)
