Top1
Ron Guidry was 27 in 1978, he went 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA, won the Cy Young and finished 2nd in the MVP.

Rogers Hornsby is 28, Guidry strikes him out.
Honus Wagner is 34, Guidry strikes him out.
Willie Mays is 34, it's his first at bat in the series - he smacks a double off the monster.
Hank Aaron is 25, he grounds to short.

Bottom 1
In 1972 Lefty Carlton was also 27 and also won the Cy Young.  27-10, 1.97 ERA.

Mookie Betts leads off for the AL, he's 25 and grounds to short.
26 year old Jeff Bagwell is next and Carlton strikes him out.
Aaron Judge is 30, Carlton drills him on the forearm.
27 year old Miguel Cabrera follows up with a single to left center - Judge to third, men on the corners with 2 away.
Carlton strikes out 20 year old Mike Trout to end the threat.

Top2
Chippiness here at Fenway - Carlton hit Judge in the first and on the first pitch of the second, Guidry hits 26 year old Frank Robinson.  Robinson glares hard at the mound and goes to first.

29 year old Albert Pujols whacks a single to center.

Mike Schmidt is 30 - he hits one to the track - Robinson takes third, men on the corners.

28 year old Mike Piazza gives the NL its first lead of the series with a sac fly to right - it's a close play at the plate, but Robinson slides in safely ahead of the throw.  1-0.  1997 was Piazza's last season as a Dodger, he finished 2nd in the NL MVP and had the highest OPS+ of his career.

Guidry strikes out Carlton and ends the inning.

Bottom 2
Craig Biggio is 31, he lines a base hit to left.
Alan Trammell is 29, Carlton strikes him out.
24 year old Carlton Fisk flies to right.
Guidry flies to right - and the inning ends.

Top3
Back to the top of the order for the NL - Hornsby is 0-1 AND HE HITS A DRIVE TO LEFT IT CLEARS THE MONSTER AND THE NL TAKES A 2-0 lead.  Rogers Hornsby finished second in the NL MVP in 1924, his 222 OPS+ would be the highest of his career.

Wagner grounds to first.
Mays doubled in the first - AND HE SMASHES A BALL DEEP - DEEP DEEP CENTER FIELD AND IT IS GONE, WILLIE MAYS HOMERS AND NOW IT IS 3-0 National League.  34 year old Mays won the MVP in '65, he led all MLB in BA/OBP/SLG.

Guidry hits Aaron - and that leads to a murmur throughout the crowd - a third batter hit today.

Robinson got hit back in the second - Guidry gets him to go 6-4-3.

Bottom 3
Betts is 0-1, he flies to left.
Bagwell's 0-2 and he lines to short.
Judge was the first man hit today - and Carlton walks him.
Cabrera singled back in the first - Carlton strikes him out.

Top4
Pujols singled in the second, Guidry strikes him out.
Schmidt's 0-1, he sharply singles to left.
Piazza drove in the game's first run with a sac fly and he singles to right center, Schmidt is just able to slide into third.
Lefty Carlton chops a ball that takes a giant hop over a charging Boggs, Schmidt scores and the NL now goes up 4-0.  That's as far as the inning goes - Hornsby flies to left, Wagner grounds to short.

Bottom 4

A Hornsby grounder just escapes the diving Trammell - Schmidt scores -- Piazza is Gunned Down by Judge for the second out, the NL now leading 5-0.  1924 was Hornsby's 10 year in the bigs, all with the Cards. He's playing for McGraw here and in '27 will take over for him as the Giants skipper.  Hornsby takes second on the throw home.

Wagner rips a double down the left field line -- Hornsby will score - this is the NL team we expected to see show up in this series. 6-0.  34 year old Wagner is in his 12th season, he led all MLB in BA/OBP/SLG.

Pujols is 1-3 - AND HE HITS A DRIVE - RIGHT FIELD -- IT....JUST CLEARS THE WALL AND THE NL GOES UP 8-0.

Pujols won his third and what would turn out to be final MVP in 2009, it's the only season of his career he led MLB in homers.

That's it for Guidry, 2009 Zach Greinke comes on, RH, 25, 16-8, 2.16. Greinke won the Cy Young.

He strikes out Schmidt.
Piazza is 2-2 with a sac fly - and he LAUNCHES ONE OVER THE MONSTER, ANOTHER NATIONAL LEAGUE HOME RUN 9-0.  The AL won games 1 and 2, but the NL RH hitting lineup has come to Boston and totally busted loose and we may not see another lineup from the NL the rest of the series.  Piazza hit 40 homers in '97 and never topped that mark.

Steve Carlton already has a base hit - and he drives a ball between Judge and Trout - Carlton is going to slide in with a double!  Lefty Carlton with a 2 hit day!

Trammell doubles.
Carlton strikes out Fisk - NL one out away - Stengel goes to the bench for Griffey, who keeps the game going with a single.
Betts follows with a run scoring single, ending the shutout, 12-1, leaving men on the corners.

JEFF BAGWELL THEN UNLEASHES A BALL DEEP, DEEP INTO THE NIGHT, A 3 RUN HOMER THAT MAKES IT 12-4.

Judge doubles - that ends the game for Carlton, 1995 Greg Maddux is 29 and now he's on to wrap this up.

Cabrera singles Judge home, 12-5.

And that's where the game ends - Trout flies out to center.
