I reckon you don't accept solicitations for athlete of the month, but you should really put Terunofuji on your radar.

Guy came from Mongolia to compete in sumo in 2011. He quickly rose up the ranks, won the highest level tournament, and made it to sumo's second highest rank of Ozeki in 2015. Then crippling knee injuries and diabetes set in, and by 2019 he was down in the lowest ranks of sumo, relegated to wrestling newbie 15 and 16 year olds again.

But he fought back, and returned to the top division in 2019, when he actually won his second championship. That would have been a fitting end to the Cinderella comeback story, but he kept going, he kept winning, he won another tournament, and finally, he got promoted back to the ozeki rank that injury and illness had forced him to relinquish. And THAT would have been a fitting end to the Cinderella comeback story, but he still kept going. He won a second tournament in a row. And this month, he won all his matches, save his final one with the returning yokozuna Hakuho (another worthy candidate for other reasons, but this post is too long already), and today, Terunofuji became the 73rd yokozuna in the 300 year history of the rank.
