Martin's plan is Johnson plays first in the NL park, moves to DH when the series shifts to NY and Chambliss plays first.  Piniella plays against LH, White against RH.  A 24 year old Dave Begman got a handful of at bats for this Yankees team - if the Yankees advance, they'll meet the '84 Tigers, with their first baseman - Dave Bergman.

Bullpen (est): push

Cards 6 Yankees 6

So - Cards have the better seed, giving them home field, but the WAR battle indicates a push. Cards have easily the best player in the series (Musial) - you'd make the Cards a narrow favorite in this one.

GAME ONE

1st: The WWII era Cardinals dominated the National League; here's our first look at them in Round 2.  Max Lanier came up with the Cards in '38, was strong very quickly, and here in '43, at the age of 27, led MLB with a 1.90 ERA. He'll be effective into his mid 30s.  The 15 game winning lefty gets the first two, but then gives up a double to Reggie Jackson - Thurman Munson follows with a single and its the Yankees who hit the scoreboard first.  Lanier then walks Nettles/Randolph to load the bases - but gets away without more harm.  Yankees 1 Cardinals 0
1st: Louisiana Lightning, 26 year old lefty Ron Guidry gets the call for Billy Martin's Yankees. This is is first year in the rotation and he is strong, 16-7, 2.82, 7th in the AL Cy Young. He's a year away from one of the all time dominant pitching seasons. He'll be a career Yankee, his last season coming in '88. He gets two, then gives up a single to Danny Litwhiler, but that's all.

2nd: Bucky Bleeping Dent finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year race in '74 as the White Sox shortstop, this is his first year with the Yankees, he came over for Oscar Gamble and LaMarr Hoyt - he'll be the Yankee shortstop until being traded during the '82 season to the Rangers for Lee Mazzilli. He singles here, and then an out later, Piniella and Cliff Johnson single back to back to load them up.  A Reggie sac fly makes it Yankees 2 Cardinals 0
2nd: Lou Klein was hit twice by pitches all year - Guidry plunks him to open the frame, but that's all.

3rd: After an out, Randolph draws his second walk - after the second out, the Cards intentionally walk Dent to get to Guidry, the Yankees forced to play without the DH.  It works out for St Louis.
3rd: Cardinal catcher Walker Cooper singles with two out - Cooper was second in the NL MVP race this year to his teammate Musial. He'll make 8 All Star teams in his career with the Cards/Giants/Braves and wind up playing until he's 42.  Musial then follows with a double - and Danny Litwhiler, who hit just 7 homers all year - puts a jolt into this Sportsman's Park crowd with a 3 run shot to left to give the Cards the lead.  Yankees 2 Cardinals 3

4th: With two outs, Reggie gets his second single, Reggie came up with the A's in '67, led MLB in OPS+ in '69, was the AL MVP in '73, after 6 All Star apperances and 3 World Championships he was dealt to Baltimore as the A's purged payroll, he and Ken Holtzman dealt for Don Baylor and Mike Torrez. Holtzman and Torrez are both on this '77 Yankees team. This is his first year in New York, he'll spend just 5 seasons in the Bronx, winning two more titles, before heading to the Angels.  He'll retire back in Oakland at the age of 41. The Yankees do not score.
4th: Ray Sanders singles with one out - he's 26 and this is his second season in the bigs, the last season he sees any real playing time is '46 with the Braves and he's out of the league before the next decade.  He's stranded at first.

5th: 1-2-3, Lanier's first perfect inning.
5th: 1-2-3, Guidry's first perfect inning.

6th: Dent singles, he's reached base 3 times, two outs later Lou Piniella singles, Piniella's the 4th OF for this team, but against a lefty Martin wanted to take a shot at getting his bat in the lineup. Piniella was the AL Rookie of the Year with the Royals in '69, was their LF until coming to the Yankees for Lindy McDaniel in '74. He hits .330 in '77, tops in his career and will be a Yankee the rest of his career, until the age of 40. Lanier gets out of the inning unscathed.
6th: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Guidry, he's given up just 5 hits but the Yankees stil trail.

7th: Billy Southworth is not waiting around, he goes to the pen for 27 year old RH Howie Krist. 11 wins and a 2.90 ERA, Krist will finish his 6 year big league career with a record of 37-11, a helluva winning percentage. He gives up a 2 out single to Nettles, but that's all.
7th: With one out, Harry Walker singles - this is his first year as a starter and he's headed to the War immediately following, he returns in '46, has his career best year in '47. He's stranded at second at we go to the 8th.

8th: The next Cardinal pitcher is 24 year old RH Red Munger with an ERA a tick under 4.00 - he's a year away from a tremendous season, in '44, Munger had a 1.34 ERA in 121 IP. 1-2-3
8th: Cooper singles -- and he comes all the way around to score on a Stan Musial triple.  Musial is only 22 but with a 9.1 WAR he is easily the best player in this series; he came up in '41, led MLB in OPS+ this year at 177.  He's the best hitter in baseball next year as well, and after a year in the military, he comes back to St Louis in '46 and leads MLB in OPS+ again.  He's a Cardinal lifer, in St Louis through the age of 42. Guidry then walks Litwhiler and gives up a double to Whitey Kurowski - that scores two runs and probably salts game one away. Yankees 2 Cardinals 6

9th: Piniella and Cliff Johnson open with singles, 26 year old RH Murry Dickson enters from the pen to finish this off - A decade from now, Dickson will lead baseball in losses in 3 straight years - he walks Reggie to load the bases with nobody out.

Munson's next - he's the potential tying run.  He works the count full - but Dickson gets the big strikeout.
Next is Nettles - he works the count full -- and this time Dickson loses him, that scores a run, bases still drunk with Yankees and they trail 6-3.
Willie Randolph then ropes the first pitch he sees into right center for a double -- one run will score...two runs will score...Nettles puts on the brakes at third - a huge, huge shot for Willie Randolph, it's now 6-5, tying run at third -- go ahead run at second -- still just one out in the bottom of the 9th.

Mickey Rivers then singles to right - Nettles will score - Randolph will score - just beating Musial's throw home - Rivers takes second on the play at the plate and can you believe it? The New York Yankees - down 4 runs in the 9th have scored 5 - and take a 7-6 lead.

28 year old Harry Breechen, a lefty, enters and he gets Dent to ground to second for the second out, Rivers moves up to third.  The Yankees go to the bench, 26 year old switch hitter George Zeber hit .323 in 65 at bats - he works a walk and the Yankees have batted around.

Piniella started the inning with a single - and he singles again here, scoring Rivers; and then Breechen hits Johnson, loading the bases again for Reggie -- who singles, scoring two runs, this is an unbelievable 9th inning here in St Louis - Munson then singles, that score another run - it ends there but the New York Yankees, down 4 runs in the 9th, with a win probability as small as it could possibly be -- plate 9 men.  Yankees 11 Cardinals 6
9th: It's the 30 year old RH Dick Tidrow who gets the call; he won 11 games this year, he was a starter the first 4 years of his career, shifted to the pen in '75, he'll be a Yankee until being dealt to the Cubs for Ray Burris early in the '79 season. He walks Marty Marion - and then gives up a 2 run shot to pinch hitting Johnny Hopp -- the Cardinals have shaved 2 runs - and Billy is out to the mound to bring in the author of The Bronx Zoo, the Cy Young Award winner, 32 year old lefty Sparky Lyle with his 2.16 ERA, 26 saves and 13 wins.

Walker Cooper is first - grounds to second.
Musial is next - grounds to third
Litwhiler then singles -- then Kurowski grounds to Nettles - onto first -- and that's the ballgame.

Yankees 11
Cardinals 8
WP Guidry
LP Dickson

It'll be a long time before we see a 9th inning like that.  Down by 4 the Yankees score 9.

Piniella - 4 hits
Johnson - reached 3 times
Reggie - reached 4 times, 3 RBI, 2 runs scored
Munson - two hits
Nettles- reached 3 times
Randolph - reached 3 times, 2 RBI
Dent - reached 3 times

For the Cards..

Cooper - 2 hits
Musial - 2 hits, double/triple
Litwhiler - reached 4 times, with the HR, 3 RBI, 2 runs scored

We stay in St Louis for game 2 - Cards probably need this split before going to Yankee Stadium.

Yanks unchanged, Cardinals shuffle against the RH Figueroa.

GAME TWO

1st: Howie Pollet was the MVP for the Cardinals in Round 1 and he gets the ball today. 22 year old lefty.  1.75 ERA. He led MLB in ERA this year, then left for the military and came back in '46 when he was 4th in the NL MVP race and won 21 games in his career best season. He gives up a one out Cliff Johnson single, that's all.
1st: The Yankee leader in IP was 28 year old RH Ed Figueroa; 16-11, 3.57. He finished 4th in the AL Cy Young in '76 and will finish 7th in '78 and that's the last productive season of his career. 1-2-3

2nd: Willie Randolph singles with one out; Randolph's 22, in his second year as the Yankee second baseman after coming over from the Pirates with Dock Ellis for Doc Medich. He keeps that job until '89 when he left as a free agent for the Dodgers. He's stranded at first.
2nd: Whitey Kurowski walks, he'll be career long Cardinal throughout the 40s. Two years from now he'll finish 5th in the NL MVP race. He goes to third on a Harry Walker double and then scores on a Lou Klein groundout. Yankees 0 Cardinals 1

3rd: 1-2-3
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Pollet.
4th: 1-2-3, 9 straight for Figueroa

5th: 1-2-3, 11 straight for Pollet.
5th: 1-2-3, 12 straight for Figueroa.  Step for Step here in game 2.

6th: Piniella singles, New York's third hit, after an out and then Cliff Johnson walks.  Johnson's only had less than 200 plate apperances as a Yankee, but he had a 173 OPS+ and Martin not only will DH him at home, he's playing him at first on the road.  The Yanks got him in mid June from the Astros for a player to be named later that, after the season, turned out to be Dave Bergman. 2 years to the day later, he's off to Cleveland for Don Hood. After the second out, Munson walks and New York has loaded the bases.  They do not score.
6th: Musial singles with one out, Cooper then singles - it ends there.  Through 6, each team has just 3 hits.

7th: As was the case in game one, the 7th means the bullpen for the Cardinals and Howie Krist is back. He gives up a Randolph single -- and then Randolph steals second.  Mickey Rivers comes to the plate with the tying run in scoring position. Rivers came to New York from the Angels the year prior in a 7 player trade and made the AL All Star team, the only time he would do so in his career.  He singles to left center - and that scores the tying run. Back to the bullpen for Red Munger - this Cardinal relief group struggled in game one and here we are again. Munger however escapes, Yankees 1 Cardinals 1
7th: Dick Tidrow gets the call from Billy; 1-2-3

8th: With one out, Reggie Jackson hits a majestic home run to right -- he takes the slow, slow trot around the bases - the Yankees go out in front.  Murry Dickson was the game 1 loser and he enters here, Munson singles, that's all.  Yankees 2 Cardinals 1
8th: 36 year old Debs Garms pinch singles to open, Tidrow then walks Sanders, but he bears down and gets the next three and the Yankees are now 3 outs away from taking both games in St Louis.

9th: Harry Brecheen is the 5th St Louis pitcher, 1-2-3
9th: Sparky Lyle saved game one and he comes on here.

First is Kurowski - who flies easily to Jackson.
Next is Walker who flies easily to Jackson - but Reggie loses it in the sun, Walker slides into second with a two base error and the tying run is in scoring position as Billy fumes in the dugout.
Lou Klein singles to left center -- Walker comes around - and he scores the tying run.
Marty Marion is next - he grounds to first - they get the lead runner and there are two outs.
Johnny Hopp pinch homered yesterday and now he enters with two out here - and he pops up to Johnson in foul territory.

Man - the Yankees were two outs away, but Reggie misplays a flyball and now it's all tied up Yankees 2 Cardinals 2

10th: The Cardinals best bullpen arm is 29 year old lefty Al Brazle, he had a 1.53 ERA, after two outs he walks Reggie, but that's it.
10th: 1-2-3, now it's the 11th.

11th: 1-2-3
11th: 23 year old RH Ken Clay comes on now for the Yanks, he gives up a one out single to Kurowski, that's all.

12th: The Cardinals 4th starter is Harry Gumbert, 10 game winner, 2.84 ERA and he enters now, 1-2-3
12th: 1-2-3

13th: The Cards bring back their game one starter, Max Lanier, just no rest at all for Lanier, he gets two outs, then Munson loops an 0-2 pitch into left for a base hit - and Graig Nettles launches a two run shot to right center to put the Yankees in front again. Huge celebration in front of the Yankees dugout.  Yankees 4 Cardinals 2
13th: Clay stays on, first up is Sanders - he grounds to Johnson, flip to Clay, one away.
Next is Musial - he hits a ball hard -- Rivers flies back, all the way to the wall and snags it for out number two.
Next is Cooper - he hits a sinking line drive to right - and Reggie makes a tumbling, diving catch -- and that ends the game.

Cardinals 2

Round 2 doesnt disappoint, 4 Yankee pitchers hold St Louis to 6 hits in 13 innings.

Piniella - has reached 5 times
Johnson - has reached 5 times
Reggie - has reached 6 times and homered
Munson - has reached 5 times,
Nettles- has reached 4 times and hit the game winning home run
Randolph - has reached 5 times,

For the Cards..
Kurowski reached twice today.

We are headed to the Bronx - the Cards are up against it, they need to win the next 3 games to stay alive.

DH used for the first time in the series as we move to New York; Cards throwing a RH so we see the Yankees make their LF platoon switch.

GAME THREE

1st: If the Yankees move on they'll face Sparky Anderson's '84 Tigers - Anderson of course managed the Big Red Machine in the 70s - a member of his staff -- Don Gullett. Gullett came up with the Reds when he was 19; had some strong years for Sparky, two top 10 Cy Young finishes. This is his first year in NY and next year is his last in the bigs. 14-4, 3.58 -- 1-2-3.
1st: The Cards pitching leader in WAR is 30 year old Mort Cooper, 21-8, 2.30 -- he was the NL MVP the year prior with 10 shutouts and a 1.78 ERA - he finished 5th this year, leading the league in wins.  1-2-3

2nd: Kurowski walks, Lou Klein is a 24 year old rookie second baseman, he'll play just five years and this is the only one where he starts - he doubles in this spot, and then Kurowski scores on a Sanders sac fly. After the second out, Gullet walks Walker and Marion to load them up but that's where it ends. Cardinals 1 Yankees 0
2nd: Graig Nettles was the game two hero and he singles to lead off here. Nettles came up with the Twins, moved on to Cleveland and the Yankees got him prior to the '73 season. His prime is right now, ages 31-33 is the height of his production - he wins his only two Gold Gloves in '77 and '78, '76 and '78 are his two best years with the bat, and he has two top ten AL MVP finishes in '77 and '78.  Rivers follows with a single, an out later, Munson singles to tie the score. Cardinals 1 Yankees 1

3rd: Kurowski singles with two out, that's all.
3rd: Johnson singles with two out, that's all.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: With one out, Chambliss and Munson single back to back.  Munson was the AL Rookie of the Year as the Yankee catcher in '70 and was the AL MVP last year, in '76. He finished 7th this year and will die during the '79 season.  The Yankees do not score.

5th: 1-2-3, 7 straight for Gullett
5th: Reggie walks with one out and Johnson follows with a walk, Nettles singles to right -- it scores Reggie - Walker guns Johnson down at third in a big time throw.  Cardinals 1 Yankees 2

6th: 1-2-3, 10 straight for Gullett
6th: Chambliss sat, somewhat unexpectedly, in the first two games, he's here now and doubles; like Nettles, Chambliss came over from Cleveland, where he had been AL Rookie of the Year in '71. He and Dick Tidrow came over in a deal early in the '74 season. His best year was '76, 5th in AL MVP. He's stranded at second.

7th: Sanders walks, but that's it - Gullet hasn't allowed a hit since the third.
7th: 1-2-3

8th: Marty Marion singles, just the Cards third hit. An out later, Musial's aboard by error and the tying run is in scoring position.  After the second out -- Kurowski singles - that ties the score and ends Gullett's day.  Dick Tidrow makes his third straight appearance, he gets out of this, Cardinals 2 Yankees 2
8th: 1-2-3, Cooper's retired 8 straight.

9th: Tidrow gets two but then Walker doubles -- and now the Cards have the lead run in scoring position -- but Tidrow escapes.  Bottom of the 9th.
9th: Can the Yankees find a run?  Munson opens with a single, he's erased on a Randolph fielders choice, Cooper then gets Dent and White and once again, extra innings.

10th: Tidrow again gets the first two, then Litwhiler singles - and then Kurowski singles and again, the lead run is in scoring position.  But again - Tidrow escapes.
10th: 1-2-3 -- Mort Cooper is through 10 innings.

11th: Sanders and O'Dea open with a walk and a single, Tidrow in trouble again - he gets the next two -- but then Walker Cooper doubles both men home and the Cards have the lead. They put Musial on intentionally and bring on Ken Clay - he gives up a Litwhiler single and the bases are loaded; then walks Kurowski for another run.  Cardinals 5 Yankees 2
11th: Howie Krist is on the finish this off -

Rivers is first - he pops up behind home plate for the first out.
Chambliss grounds out to Marion.
And Munson grounds out to Kurowski.

Cardinals 5
Yankees 2
WP Cooper
LP Tidrow

10 innings for Mort Cooper.  Walker Cooper had one hit today, but it was a double to win the game. Litwhiler had 2 hits, Kurowski reached 5 times, Sanders/Walker/Marion all reached twice.

For New York - Johnson has now reached 7 times, Nettles 6. Chambliss got 2 hits today, Munson has reached 8 times in the series.

One more in New York - Guidry comes back for the Yankees, for the Cards - they will unexpectedly turn to their fifth starter, Ernie White.

SS Dent (25)        79     2.4
SP Guidry (L) (26)  140  5.4

So - Lanier and 4th starter Gumpert were both used out of the pen in that marathon game 2, so they are not available to start this one, Cooper went in game 3 and Pollet won't be ready until game 5.  That leaves Ernie White to take the ball in another must win game for the Cardinals.

GAME FOUR

1st: Ron Guidry returns to the mound looking to wrap up the series for New York.  1-2-3
1st: Ernie White is a 26 year old lefty who just is not as strong as the rest of the Cardinal rotation, 5-5, 3.78 with fewer than 80 IP. He had a big 1941, winning 17 and finishing in the top ten for NL MVP, this is his last year in St Louis. 1-2-3

2nd: Lou Klein singles with one out and Ray Sanders walks, the inning ends with men on the corners.
2nd: Munson walks, Nettles singles - and then Randolph singles, it scores Munson and the Yankees are on the board. An out moves both runners up and then a White wild pitch scores Nettles. Chambliss then singles to score Randolph, that's 3 for the Yankees. After the second out, Piniella doubles home run number four and then a Cliff Johnson single gives us the crooked number to end the frame.  Cardinals 0 Yankees 5

3rd: 1-2-3, not sure you can stake Guidry to this kind of lead.
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: Kurowski walks with an out, that's it.
4th: 1-2-3

5th: Marion's hit with two out, that's all.  The Cards have just the one hit.
5th: Piniella and Johnson single, that's all.

6th: 1-2-3, still just one hit and this is looking bleak for the Cardinals.
6th: Al Brazle is the new Cardinal pitcher. He gets out out, then gives up singles to Rivers, Chambliss, and then to Dent and that scores a run and the celebration is underway.  Piniella singles to make it 7-0. Johnson grounds out to score another run, Cardinals 0 Yankees 8

7th: 1-2-3 - the 1977 Yankees are going to move on.
7th: 1-2-3

8th: After two out, Cooper singles and Musial walks, but that's it.
8th: Harry Brecheen is the third Cardinal pitcher. Rivers singles, that's all.

9th: Billy turns to a 21 year old, Gil Patterson, who pitched just 33 inconsequential innings, to finish the game.

He strikes out the side.

Cardinals 0
Yankees 8
WP Guidry
LP White

Guidry gives up 2 hits in 8 innings and the Yankees move forward into the Round of 32 where they will meet the 1984 Tigers.  Piniella reached 8 times, Johnson 9. Nettles 7 and Munson 9.

I think the MVP is Nettles - the big blow in the series was his homer to win the 13 inning game 2, that game wiped out the Cardinal pitching staff and they were fighting uphill subsequent.

Top half of Region One is done; 30 slots still to be filled in the next round.
