The Non-Drafted Niners

Thursday, May 14, 2020

Okay, so here are my thoughts about the Maiocco/Papa 49ers draft.  For this exercise, I'm going to do my own draft, with the same rules, of players not taken in their draft.

1. John Brodie QB
-3. Harris Barton OT/Gene Washington WR
-5. Justin Smith DL/Len Rohde OT
-7. Y.A. Tittle QB/Michael Carter DL - I'll make the same decision made in the actual draft that the spirit of the exercise requires the second QB be taken quickly.
-9. Ken Norton LB/Garrison Hearst RB
-11 Dwaine Board DL/Fred Quillan C
-13. Tommy Hart DL/Derrick Deese OT
-15. Ricky Watters RB/Richard Sherman CB - Watters is the WC selection for team 2, Sherman the first active player off the board in this draft.
-17. Tim McDonald S/Larry Allen G - Aldon Smith gets left behind as Allen becomes the WC choice for Team 1.
-19. Ray Brown G/Ken Willard FB
-21. Bruce Bosley G/Nick Bosa DL - Bosa obviously is super, super speculative, but what the hell.
-23. Mike Walter LB/Ahmad Brooks LB
-25. Freddie Solomon WR/Willie Harper LB
-27. Vernon Davis TE/Julian Peterson LB
-29. Jeremy NewberryC /Derek Smith LB - I'm going to knock out the offensive lines for both teams now, even though both could theoretically wait
-31. Bubba Paris T/John Ayers G
-33. Don Griffin CB/Lee Woodall LB
-35. Bill Romanowski LB/Kevin Fagan DL - so, both teams will play a 3-4 defense
-37 -Eric Reid S /Eric Davis CB
-39 -RC Owens WR/Tony Parrish S
-41. Michael Crabtree WR/Russ Francis TE
-43. Bruce Taylor CB/Mel Phillips S
-45. Tom Rathman FB /Robbie Gould K
-47. Doug Cunningham-returner/Frankie Albert P - a mild cheat, Albert did punt 299 times and pretty well, and getting him on the roster as a second QB is worth whatever tiny drop there might be in selecting the next P
-49. Buck Shaw-HC/Mitch Wishnowsky P, Runager and Wittum is a coin flip for next punter, so I'll take the active guy and hope he lives up to that draft pick; I'm assuming the same rules apply for HC selection as for player selection.
-51. Phil Dawson K/Kyle Shanahan, HC - Mariucci would be the other possibility here
52. Dexter Carter - returner
