What is this all about?
Yesterday.
Here are the top 5 July 9 Moments in San Francisco Giants history
1966 home vs. Reds, we're 21 games over .500 with a two game lead in the NL, 3 and a half hours on a Saturday afternoon at the Stick, down 6-4 in the bottom of the 9th, Willie McCovey hits a 2 run homer off Billy McCool to send the game to extras. It's homer #182 for McCovey.
Walk off 1966 home vs. Reds, same game, it's 3 innings later and we're down again, 7-6 with 2 out in the bottom of the 12th, Tom Haller hits a 2 run homer off Joe Nuxhall to win the game. It's the 27th walk off homer in San Francisco history, but only the second extra innings walk off where the homer was hit when we were trailing.
Walk off 1967 home vs. Dodgers, we're 6 out of first, looking for a series sweep of LA, complete games for both Mike McCormick and Claude Osteen - it's scoreless with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, we've got the bases loaded, Willie Mays singles home Tito Fuentes with the winning run. '66 was the last season Mays played 150 games or hit 30 homers; he was 36 in '67 and dropped to 141 and 22.
1971 at Dodgers, we're rolling, this is game 88, we're 19 over .500 with a 5 game lead in the west, starting a 3 game series at Chavez Ravine against the second place Dodgers. Down 4-3 in the 9th, Dick Dietz singles home two off of Pete Mikkelson, we're gonna win this one 7-4. We signed Dietz at 18, it took him six years, but he got some plate appearances in '66. A couple of years later he's splitting time as the starting catcher and in '70 and '71 was the full time starter and hitting the heck out of the ball. We released him before the next season and he signed with LA.
Walk off 1999 home vs. St Louis, 11 over .500 with a 2 game lead in the west in our last season at the Stick, it's 4-4 in the 11th, JT Snow hits a walk off homer off of Manny Aybar. We only have 2 remaining Candlestick walk off homers after today. This is the only walk off home run of JT Snow's 16 year career.
See you tomorrow. Go Giants!
