2021 Survivor Series Preview (every Survivor Series Match ranked)

Wednesday, November 17, 2021

Survivor Series, the annual Thanksgiving tradition from WWE, is Sunday from Brooklyn.

If you're even an occasional reader of my quarterly WWE PPVs, a theme I've hit in recent years is the promotional dissonance between WWE proper (which is best described as..aight.  As in "how's WWE been"..."I mean, it's aight, I guess") and NXT, the artisnal imprint within the promotion that was consistrently putting out not just some of the best matches in the world, but some of the best matches in WWE/WWF/WWWF history.

Well, they fixed that.  The NXT deteriortation has been rapid and dramatic and is now the worst weekly wrestling program...honestly, maybe the worst weekly wrestling program any major promotion has ever produced ever.

Meanwhile, AEW had a PPV with a half dozen four star and up matches on Saturday.

With that said, here's the card.

Champion v. Champion: Big E (WWE Champion) vs. Roman Reigns (Universal Champion) (with Paul Heyman)

-Reigns is the top act in the promotion; most pushed, most over, most consistently interesting. He's had this belt over a year, taking it last August from Bray Wyatt, who is no longer with the promotion.  Wyatt had taken the belt from Braun Strowman, who is no longer with the promotion.  Strowman had taken it from Bill Goldberg, who does not work full time with the promotion.

-The lineal WWF Champion is Langston, who is no longer called Langston, he's just called Big E, but that's just stupid.  He took from Lashley in March (edit, it was September, which is not March)  Langston's fine, like Lashley is fine, like McIntyre, the champion before Lashley is fine.  Big guys, good enough workers, he fits in what the promotion thinks of as a champion and if you dropped him in AEW he'd be challenged to find a spot on a PPV singles match; I guess Miro would be the closest equivalent, but Langston would need to make the same step up that Miro made post WWE.

-Reigns beat up Langston's friends and so here we are.  The match should be fine.

3 1/4, it was fine.  Reigns goes over.

Champion v. Champion: Becky Lynch (Raw Women's Champion) vs. Charlotte Flair (SmackDown Women's Champion)

-A couple weeks ago, Becky was the Smackdown Champion and Charlotte the RAW Champion, both were heels, I guess, Becky turned heel with her post pregnancy return to the promotion; apparently at her request.  At one point, she was probably the most over babyface in the entire company and now she's just sort of around.  Charlotte's a heel; sort of regardless of the booking.  Anyway - WWE did the thing where they move people from one "brand" to the other - and so chose to have Lynch and Flair just hand each other their respective title belts.  There was unscripted awkwardness, they apparently had a backstage confrontation and Flair has taken the brunt of the blame.  There's a Bret/Shawn element to this now that maybe WWE leans into given that this is Survivor Series.

3 3/4, pretty good, well laid out, thumbs up to the agent; Becky goes over.

Champion v. Champion: RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Riddle) (Raw Tag Team Champions) vs. The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso) (SmackDown Tag Team Champions)

-The Usos are part of the Reigns heel act; they took the belts from Rey and his kid in July.  Randy Orton is momentarily a babyface, which never fits him all that well, but he and Riddle are a good act as a mismatched tag team.  They took from AJ and his bodyguard at Summer Slam.  This should be a solid match.

3 stars, it was a solid match.  Babyfaces win. Orton apparently sets mark for most WWE PPV matches.

Champion v. Champion: Damian Priest (United States Champion) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (Intercontinental Champion) (with Rick Boogs)

-All babyface match; there's so far not even a pretense at an issue other than that these are the secondary champions.  Nakamura took the IC from Crews in August - his matches are really all focused on a shirtless guy playing guitar during the bulk of the match and if you think that is hyperbole that is not hyperbole that is the presentation.  Priest took the US belt from Sheamus at Summer Slam and doesn't wrestle very much.  He's just a guy.

They moved this to the pre-show; a run of the mill battle royal replaced it, AJs untalented bodyguard won.

Elimination Match: Team Raw (Seth Rollins, Finn Bálor, Kevin Owens, Bobby Lashley, and Austin Theory) (with MVP) vs. Team SmackDown (Drew McIntyre, Jeff Hardy, King Woods, Happy Corbin, and TBA) (with Madcap Moss)

-Rollins is really the only presently pushed act; they're building him to challenge Langston for that belt; Owens just turned heel this week - Lashley and young Theory are also heels, so Balor is the only babyface on the team.  Smackdown inverts that, Corbin is the heel - McIntyre/Hardy/Woods babyfaces; they had Zayn on this team but now they do not and it's TBA.  There's not a ton of reason to be interested in this match, maybe the interaction of Rollins/Balor/Owens - I think Owens' deal is expiring relatively soon and one would believe he is headed to greener workrate pastures.

3 1/2 stars; this was a half hour match, they did a lot of stuff, you get a bunch of guys working hard for half an hour and it's almost impossible to have a bad match.  Rollins was the sole survivor.

Elimination Match: Team Raw (Bianca Belair, Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan, Carmella, and Queen Zelina) vs. Team SmackDown (Sasha Banks, Shayna Baszler, Shotzi, Natalya, and TBA)

-And the women will also have one of these.

2 stars.  They had one of these.

It's a real good encapsulation of where WWE is right now - it's mainly not bad if you skip NXT entirely and liberally fast forward most of the rest of the programming.  The Reigns stuff is interesting and well done and the promotion could, were it to want to, put on as many high level wrestling matches as you could ever want to see (Ricochet and Walter still work there).  But what they do put on is almost entirely inessential - and that, for sure, describes Survivor Series 2021.

Almost entirely inessential.

Here's every match (probably) in the history of Survivor Series ranked.  Show proper, only. Rankings are mine.

And then no one scores for a minute - at 27 seconds White misses the chance at a game tying J, Boston decides not to foul - Ginobli gets an open J at 15 seconds but misses - Boston doesn't stop the clock - they go down the floor - clock ticking down -
3 seconds left when Jo Jo White rises and fires --
