Forever Giants: 1907 New York Giants(Year 25)

Friday, November 28, 2014

1906 is here.

My WAR calculation is a combination of Baseball-reference and Clay Davenport; I believe it to be the "best" WAR number available for historical comparison. 8 WAR is an MVP quality season. The record is pythagorean adjusted for 162 games.

1907 90-72
C Roger Bresnahan 3.05
1B Dan McGann 2.4
2B Larry Doyle -1.1
SS Bill Dahlen 1.05

-A quarter century of Giants.  Bresnahan starts using shinguards and, following a June beaning in which he's given last rites, a padded mask.  Giants are at 90+ wins each of McGraw's five years as full season manager.

-Mathewson had diptheria; his younger brother started a game and gave up 14 walks. McGraw punched a fan in April, as seen with Mathewson the year before, player/fan violence not uncommon in the early 20th century.

-Mathewson, by all accounts a helluva good guy, punched a teenage heckler in the mouth in April, a hundred years later, every sportswriter would proclaim Barry Bonds baseball's ultimate villain for being grumpy.  At end of the season, Mathewson threw three complete game shutouts in the greatest pitching performance in World Series history through 2014.
