Wrestlemania 40, believe it or not, is this weekend from Philly.
My quarterly PPV previews have moved to Mania only; occasionally, I've thought of going back and watching each Mania proper, PPV only, to see what the story WWE was telling would look like if it only consisted of those (now) 39 chapters. This is (sort of) a nudge toward that direction.
Here's the card. (edit, I liked this less than did consensus; I'm 3 1/2 on Cody/Roman, for ex)
Night One:

The Rock and Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins
Undisputed Universal Title: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes
World Heavyweight Title: Seth "Freakin" Rollins (c) vs. Drew McIntyre
-One year ago, Roman Reigns, in the midst of a Bruno-like title reign, kept that belt in the main event of WM39, defeating Cody Rhodes. A year later - Roman Reigns, in the midst of a Bruno-like title reign, will again face Rhodes in the main event. The wrinkle is Cousin Dwayne, long retired, who returns to the promotion not only as a global movie star - but as a shoot member of the board of directors. The Rock returned to interrupt the build to the rematch - and after a hiccup where it appeared he would be challenging Roman for the title - he, instead, joined Roman - and they'll be taking on Rhodes and Rollins in the main event of Night One. If the babyface team wins - then the Bloodline is barred from ringside on Sunday for the main event; if the heel team wins, then the title match becomes "Bloodline Rules" which is essentially No DQ. The hottest match coming out of the build isn't happening - it's Rock v Cody (Rock, unsurprisingly, is massively over and dwarfs every other element of the promotion for the show). One year ago, Rollins defeated Logan Paul - over the past year WWE created a second primary belt, Rollins becoming its first holder - he joins with a former rival (Rhodes) to face a former stablemate (Reigns) in that Night One tag. Rollins is probably still the best worker of the four, so while he's really an add on in this program (he gains nothing from it and has to defend his belt against a fresh McIntyre the next night) he makes the match better. McIntyre, a year ago, lost his bid to win the IC title in a hell of a match against Gunther and Sheamus - he's currently doing the best character work of his career (and by a million miles) doing a variation of 1997 Bret Hart. One more wrinkle is CM Punk - a year ago, he was recovering from a triceps tear in anticipation of his return to AEW to launch the Saturday night show Collision -- a year later he is recovering from triceps tear and in a feud with both McIntyre and Rollins; Punk will be joining commentary for their title match.
All of these matches should be good - the main event angle is super hot and peaking at the right time; Cody taking the belt Sunday makes sense; the Rock pinning him the night before makes sense, and McIntyre is very, very likely to take Rollins' belt Sunday.
IC Title: Gunther (c) vs. Sami Zayn
US Title: Logan Paul (c) vs. Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens
Jey Uso v. Jimmy Uso
A year ago, Zayn and Owens won the tag titles in an excellent match against the Usos - Owens would get shipped off to Smackdown and takes on the previously referenced Paul, who now holds one of the secondary belts in a 3 way that also includes Orton, who was down with injury a year ago. This should also be a good match; Paul is shockingly good at this for a part timer with so little ring time; Owens and Orton are babyfaces here who understand how to have big matches in this spot. If Paul kept and an Orton/Owens feud started, that makes sense. Zayn is once again in the role of underdog babyface who no one believes in that he was in the year before - and Gunther, once again, is in the role of greatest Intercontinental Champion of All Time that he was in the year before. Zayn taking in the best match of the weekend is on the table - Chad Gable has been thrown in this mix as Zayn's trainer - opening up a possibility of a Gable turn here that might allow Gunther to keep the belt. The Usos broke up subsequent to losing those tag belts last year - Jey is now a RAW babyface, Jimmy still a member of the Bloodline stable on Smackdown, and this is likely to be a good match and Jey winning makes sense.
Yeah - that's 6 matches - all of which should be good - most of which are likely to have good heat - WWE is sort of unimpeachable right now if you don't think about Vince (who?)
Women's World Title: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Becky Lynch
WWE Womens Title: Iyo Sky (c) vs. Bayley
One year ago, Ripley took the belt from Charlotte in an excellent match. Ripley is a heel, leader of a heel stable - and is probably the most over woman babyface in the promotion and will get the bulk of the cheers in this defense. Lynch was on the winning side in a babyface trios match a year ago with returning vets Trish and Lita - Lynch was once the most over woman babyface in the promotion and part of the quartet of women designated as the critical elements in leaping US womens wrestling forward (Charlotte's out with injury, Banks is in AEW and Bayley is in the next match) but that was yesterday and she may be on the wrong side of a WM crowd in Philly. A year ago, Bayley and Sky were in the same stable and on the losing end of that aforementioned trios match - Sky won the other women's belt and Bayley got bounced from the stable; Lynch/Ripley could be very strong, with the crowd being an interesting wrinkle and Ripley keeping the belt makes sense. Sky is a strong worker but Bayley has noticeably slowed Haven't we all (Bayley is very likely to take the title here).
That's 8 matches that I would plan on watching.
Tag Titles (Ladder Match): The Judgment Day (Finn Bálor and Damian Priest) (c) vs. DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) vs. The Awesome Truth (The Miz and R-Truth) vs. The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) vs. A-Town Down Under (Austin Theory and Grayson Waller) vs. New Catch Republic (Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate)
-One more title match; a giant collision match that given the stunt element and a handful of really good workers included, also could be a really good match. Balor and Priest are in that heel stable that is fronted by Ripley, they're now the holders of the tag belts that Zayn/Owens won a year go (Priest also holds the Money in the Bank Briefcase, and that might come into play in night two, particularly assuming a giant ladder match is an easy way for them to lose the tag titles, and given the stips, it makes sense that they take this opportunity to split the tag titles again). A year ago, Priest wasn't on the card and Balor lost a Hell in the Cell match (where he suffered a hell of a cut) to Edge - who now holds a secondary belt in AEW. We've got 2 more heel teams in this match, Miz/Killings and Theory/Waller. A year ago, Theory held the belt currently around Logan Paul's waist and he successfully defended it against John Cena (safe to say he's taken a step back). Miz lost twice last year, both to non wrestlers, Pat McAfee and Snoop Dogg (Shane McMahon made what looks like his final WWE appearance in the match). No one in any of the 3 babyface teams (DIY, New Day, Dunne/Bate) was on last years card.
Latino World Order (Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee) vs. Santos Escobar and "Dirty" Dominik Mysterio
Escobar is good, Dom gets a lot of heat, Dragon Lee is an excellent worker and Rey is, of course, one of the greatest wrestlers of all time (not anymore, but still, respect should be paid) and that's enough to make this match the 10th (and last, probably match on the show worth watching. Rey beat his son a year ago in what looked like the blow off to that feud - but Dom's been tossed into a program where Rey and the newest LWO member, Lee, take on a former member, Escobar. We might see a Carlito turn here.
The last 3 matches.....eh.
LA Knight vs. AJ Styles
LA Knight is this year's Austin Theory, when people think "why don't I like WWE" - he's what they're thinking about. But - AJ Styles is AJ Styles and will likely do something good

This could be fine - the garbage stip likely means some crowd pleasing bumps, but no one here is over at all.
Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill, and Naomi vs. Damage CTRL (Dakota Kai, Asuka, and Kairi Sane)
There are some good workers in this match, particularly on the heel side - but Cargill likely is positioned to get the fall in highly, highly protected way.
WWE is doing great business and putting on good shows. Expectation for a good show should be high.
