2B-Morgan's the best player in the series
SS-Concepcion, easily
3B-Nettles, he's got a glove advantage over Rose
LF-Foster, a little stronger than White/Piniella
CF-Rivers, by the smallest margin over Geronimo
RF-Jackson, over Griffey, who will be the Yankee RF in '82.

SP1-Guidry, easily
SP2-Nolan, over Gullett (the Yanks version)
SP3-Figueroa
SP4-Push
Bullpen-Push, Lyle's the best arm, but Reds have more depth.

Reds 6 Yankees 6 -- close as it can be; Reds better lineup, Yanks better arms.

The pitching matchups for the series:

Game One: Figueroa at Gullett (Reds version of Gullett)Yanks took 5 games to win in the last round, so they open with their third starter, Reds swept, so they're at the top of their rotation)
Game Two: Guidry at Nolan
Game Three: Darcy at Gullett (Yankees version)
Game Four (if needed): Norman at Torrez
Game Five (if needed) Gullett (Reds version) at Figueroa
Game Six (if needed) Guidry at Nolan
Game Seven (if needed) Gullett (Yankees version) at Darcy

We've got Hall of Famers, we've got stars - we've got a marquee 1970s showdown.  Big Red Machine v. Bronx Zoo.  The Reds are slight favorites.  Let's do it.

GAME ONE

1st: In high school, Don Gullett was All State (KY) in football, basketball, baseball; the Reds took him 14th overall in the '69 draft.  The next year he made his big league debut.  Gullett picked up 2 saves against the Pirates in the '70 NLCS, moved to the rotation in '71 and contracted hepatitus in '72.  He came back and started games in both the NLCS and in the Reds World Series loss to the A's. In '73, Gullett gave up Willie Mays's final home run, number 660.  Gullett added a forkball in '74 - Sparky said Gullett was on his way to the Hall of Fame.  24 years old now, Gullett had a 2.09 ERA in the middle of the '75 season when he took a line drive off the thumb.  He missed 2 months, came back in August.  Gullett homered in his game one NLCS win over Pittsburgh.  He pitched games 1, 5, 7 in the World Series against the Red Sox, going 1 and 1.  1-2-3
1st: In 1966, a 17 year old Ed Figueroa pitched for the Puerto Rican national team; then signed with the Mets - they would release him and he'd spend a year fighting in the Vietnam War.  After missing 2 years, he signed with the Giants, they dealt him to the Angels in '73, he made his big league debut in '74 and was strong in '75, winning 16 with an ERA under 3.  At the end of the season, he and Mickey Rivers headed to the Yankees for Bobby Bonds.  Figueroa won 19 in '76, he was the losing pitcher for the Yanks when the Reds clinched the Series against them.  He won 16 more in '77, but fell out of favor with Billy Martin, struggled in the ALCS and didn't get a start in the World Series. But here he is - in Game 1 of the Regional Final.  1-2-3

2nd: Graig Nettles walks.  Nettles played both baseball and basketball at San Diego St, the Twins took him in the 4th round in 1965.  In '67, his AAA manager was none other than Billy Martin and in '68 he made his big league debut.  In '69, Martin got the Twins job, but Nettles couldn't crack the starting lineup and was dealt to Cleveland after the season and installed at third base.  In '70, he led the league in fielding percentage and in '71 broke the record for most fielding double plays by a third baseman in a season. After the season he was dealt to the Yankees.  Nettles was caught using a corked bat in '74, he was an All Star starter in '75, he went back to the All Star game this year and finished 5th in the AL MVP.  Mickey Rivers follows with a single. Chris Chambliss then laces a single to right center - and the Yankees score the first run of the series.  Gullett retires the next 3.  Yankees 1 Reds 0
2nd: George Foster walks.  As a kid in California, he and Dave Kingman were in the same Little League.  The Giants took him in the third round in '68. He was a late season callup to the big leagues in both '69 and '70 and broke camp with the big club in '71; his roommate on the road - Bobby Bonds, mentioned an inning ago.  The Giants sent him to the Reds before season's end, in '72, he scored the winning run in the NLCS.  The Reds sent him back down in '73 where he roomed with Ken Griffey.  This is his first season as an everyday player, hitting .300 with 23 homers.  Foster hit .364 in the NLCS and .276 in the Series.  Griffey walks.  And then Tony Perez - who sat in favor of Dan Driessen in game 3 of the previous round - hits a 3 run homer.  Long trot for Perez who puts the Reds on top.  Figueroa gets 2 - then gives up a base hit to his opposite number and future teammate Gullett. Pete Rose singles.  Joe Morgan walks and the Reds have the bases loaded with 2 out.  Figueroa escapes.  Yankees 1 Reds 3

3rd: Reggie Jackson walks with one out.  Reggie was a starting defensive back for Frank Kush at Arizona St; in '66 the A's made him the second overall pick.  Reggie, Joe Rudi, Rollie Fingers were all together in A ball.  He came up briefly in '67 and for good in '68. Reggie was third in the AL in homers in '69, In the '72 ALCS, he tore his hamstring and missed the A's World Series win over the Reds; he hit .310 a year later against Baltimore, becoming the 1973 World Series MVP, to add to his unanimous selection as regular season MVP. 7 days before Opening Day in '76, the A's dealt him to Baltimore in a salary dump.  In the offseason, he signed a 5 year, 2.96 million dollar deal with the Yankees.  He and Billy Martin nearly had a nationally televised fight when Reggie was pulled during the middle of an inning against the Red Sox and when he struggled in the first 4 games of the ALCS, Billy benched him for game 5.  In the World Series against LA, he homered in games 4 and 5 and then hit 3 in game 6, winning the World Series MVP again.  After the second out - Reggie steals second - but that's all.
3rd: Ken Griffey singles with one out.  A 4 sport high school sports star, Griffey was drafted by the Reds in the 29th round in 1969, four years later he was up with the big club late in the year and got some at bats in the '73 NLCS.  This is his first season as the full time right fielder for the Reds, he hit .305, had a .391 OBP and scored 91 runs.  Griffey hit for a .269 average in the '75 Series. That's all Figueroa allows.

4th: Chris Chambliss hits a one out single.  Chambliss spent a year at UCLA and was the top pick in the January draft in 1970 by the Indians.  In '71, Chambliss tore his quad in spring training, he came up in late May and won the AL Rookie of the Year Award.  Chambliss was sent to the Yankees early in the '74 season.  4 pitchers went to Cleveland in a deal that was very unpopular in the Yankee clubhouse  Chambliss hit .304 in '75, .293 in '76 with 96 RBI, and he hit .524 in the ALCS including a walk off home run that beat the Royals and ended the series. This year, Chambliss hit .287 with 90 RBI. After the second out - Chambliss scores on a Bucky Dent base hit and the Yankees draw within a run.  Yankees 2 Reds 3
4th: Davey Concepcion singles to right center. Concepcion is Venezuelan, signed with the Reds in '67, came up in '70, made the All Star team in '73 and broke his fibula not long after. In '74 he drove in 82 runs and racked up 41 steals.  Concepcion his .455 in the NLCS this season.  Figueroa holds them here.

5th: Gullett gets 1 -- but then Reggie homers to right -- long, slow, slow trot by Reggie - the boos coming down from this Cincinnati crowd -- Reggie hits a towering home run to knot this game at 3.  Munson walks - Gullett gets out with no more damage.  Yankees 3 Reds 3
5th: Joe Morgan singles. Morgan didn't get an offer from a 4 year college, he went to Oakland City College and signed at 19 with Houston in 1962.  Two days before his 20th birthday he got called up for a cup of coffee. In '65 he was up to stay - second in the NL Rookie of the Year; at the end of the '71 season he was sent to Cincinnati. In '72 Morgan led the league in runs, walks, OBP; he led the league in OBP again in '74. This year - Morgan was NL MVP, he hit .327, had a .466 OBP, stole 67 bases, won his third straight Gold Glove and had the game winning hit in the World Series.  Morgan steals second, Figueroa gets 2 - but Griffey comes through with a base hit that gives the Reds the lead.  Yankees 3 Reds 4

6th: 1-2-3
6th: Cesar Geronimo walks. Geronimo is Dominican; he didn't play baseball in high school, he played basketball and softball - the Yankees still signed him in '67, he was plucked from their system by the Astros and came up briefly in '69. He was up for good in '71 and sent to the Reds following the season in that Joe Morgan trade.  He became an everyday player in '74, hitting .281 and winning a Gold Glove. He was Bob Gibson's 3,000 strikeout (6 years later he will be Nolan Ryan's 3000th strikeout). This year Geronimo hit .257, won another Gold Glove and hit .280 in the World Series.  Concepcion then reaches via error - Figueroa gets two outs - then very carefully pitches to Morgan - walking him to load the bases....then comes the big blow - Johnny Bench with a bases clearing double.  That sure looks like the big shot.  Yankees 3 Reds 7

7th: Gullett gets 2 - then Thurman Munson homers to left to get a run back. Munson went to Kent St, hit .413 his junior year, he was the 4th overall pick by the Yanks in '68, made his big league debut in '69 getting his first hit off of future teammate Catfish Hunter. In the winter, he was on the same winter ball club as Roberto Clemente. Munson took the starting catcher's job in '70, he hit .302 and won the AL Rookie of the Year.  Munson became Yankee captain in '76, he would hit .302 and be named the AL MVP; in the postseason he hit .435 in the ALCS and then .529 against the Reds in the World Series.  This year he hit .308 and had his 3rd straight 100+ RBI season.  Munson hit .285 in the ALCS and then .320 as the Yanks beat the Dodgers to win the World Series.  Yankees 4 Reds 7
7th: Figueroa gets 2 - then Geronimo singles and Concepcion walks.  That's it.

8th: Bullpen time. Sparky turns to Will McEnaney, 23 year old lefty with 15 saves and a 2.47 ERA. McEnaney's in his second big league season, the best he'll ever have.  He heads to the Expos in '77 and his last year in the bigs will be '79 in St Louis.  1-2-3.
8th: Billy turns to Dick Tidrow. 30 year old RH, 11 wins and a 3.16 ERA. Tidrow broke in with Cleveland back in '72, came to New York in the Chambliss deal in '74. The Yanks will deal him to the Cubs for Ray Burris in '79, he finishes with the Mets in '84. 1-2-3

9th: Here's Rawly Eastwick to wrap this up for the Reds.  24 year old RH with 22 saves and a 2.60 ERA, he broke in last season - third this year in the Rookie of the Year.  Next year he'll be 5th in the NL Cy Young.  He's moved at the deadline in '77 to the Cards for Doug Capilla and then will sign with the Yankees in '78, so he's pitching against future teammates.  Eastwick's final season is '81 with the Cubs.

Dent flies to Geronimo.
Ciff Johnson hits for Tidrow - grounds to Perez...flip to Eastwick.
Piniella flies to Foster...ballgame.

GAME TWO

1st: 27 year old RH Gary Nolan looks to take game 2 for the Reds.  Nine years ago the Reds took him 14th overall in the '66 draft, the next year, at 18 years old, Nolan was in the Reds rotation.  Arm soreness began in the spring of '68 and plagued Nolan throughout his career. Nolan went 18-7 in '70, won game 1 in the NLCS, lost game 1 of the World Series.  He was selected for the NL All Star team in '72, finished the season 15-5 with a 1.99 ERA. In game 1 of the World Series he gave up two homers to Gene Tenace and lost to the A's. Arm troubles cost Nolan virtually all of both '73 and '74, he came back this year, went 15-9, 3.16, walked just 29 guys all year.  Nolan beat the Pirates in game 3 of the NLCS, he was the starter in game 6 of the World Series that ended with the Carlton Fisk homer.  Nolan gets 1, then gives up a Roy White single - White's in the lineup against the RH Nolan.  Reggie Jackson doubles to right center -- White comes all the way around.  The inning will end Yankees 1 Reds 0
1st: The best starter in this series is Ron Guidry, 26 year old lefty.  Guidry was a star sprinter in high school, went to Southwestern Louisiana, taken by the Yankees in the third round in '71. In AAA, he was managed by Bobby Cox on a pitching staff including Scotty McGregor and Tippy Martinez and he made his big league debut in the middle of the '75 season.  Dick Tidrow, in the Yankee bullpen, gave him the nickname Gator.  Guidry joined the Yankee rotation this May, 16-7, 2.82, threw a 3 hitter in Game 2 of the ALCS and won his only start in the '77 World Series.  He walks Morgan with 1 out, that's all.

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Nolan
3rd: Cesar Geronimo singles, he's the first Cincinnati baserunner.  Guidry gets 1 then gives up a Pete Rose single, that's where it ends.

4th: Graig Nettles hits Nolan's first pitch over the wall in dead center and the Yanks are up 2-0.  An out later Thurman Munson triples - but Nolan keeps him at third.  Yankees 2 Reds 0
4th: Guidy gets 2 - then gives up a Ken Griffey single.  But that's it.

5th: 1-2-3
5th: 1-2-3

6th: 1-2-3, 7 straight for Nolan, just four Yankee hits today.
6th: Joe Morgan singles.  Guidry gets two and then gives up a George Foster singl, that's all and we head to the 7th with Guidry maintaining the shutout.

7th: Munson singles.  And out later Dent singles, but that's all.
7th: 1-2-3, just 5 hits allowed by Guidry and the Yanks are six outs from headed home with a split.

8th: Will McEnaney for the Reds.  1-2-3.
8th: Guidry carrying the shutout into the 8th; he gets 2 and then Morgan singles.  Guidry strands him.

9th: Pedro Borbon for the Reds; 28 year old RH with 9 wins and a 2.95 ERA. Borbon broke in back in '69 with the Angels, sent to the Reds after the season. His best year was '73, 11 wins and a 2.16 ERA, he's going to be dealt to the Giants for Hector Cruz at the deadline in '79 and finish the following season with the Cards.  Chambliss singles.  Munson walks.  Can the Yanks get some insurance?  Borbon gets the next 3 - and we head to the bottom.
9th: The Cy Young Award winner, 32 year old lefty, Sparky Lyle, comes out of the pen.  Lyle signed with the Orioles out of high school in '64, the Red Sox sniped him before the end of the year, a conversation with Ted Williams prompted his developing his slider into his signature pitch.  Lyle was 22 when he made his big league debut in '67, in spring training in '72 we was dealt to the Yankees.  Lyle saved 35 that year, 23 in '76, breaking the career AL saves record, this year Lyle was 13-5, 2.17, 26 saves.

Foster flies to Rivers.
Perez singles - Griffey singles and that gives the Reds the potential winning run at the plate with just one away.
Concepcion singles.

This Riverfront crowd is frenzied now -- bases drunk with Reds - just one away.  2-0 Yankees.

Geronimo grounds wide of first -- Chambliss makes a nifty scoop - his only play is to Dent at second to get Concepcion; Perez scores - the Reds are now down a run, 2 out, men on the corners.

Sparky Anderson turns to Terry Crowley who has had a lot of success in the tournament in this spot, winning 3 games as a pinch hitter.  The 28 year old lefty bat digs in.  Can Lyle end this game?

He can't.  He walks Crowley.  Bases loaded.  Pete Rose comes to the plate.  Tying run at third - winning run at second.  Fans howling.  Nowhere to put Rose.  Morgan on deck there is nowhere to hide.

Lyle strikes him out and it's done.

GAME THREE

1st  It's October following the Summer of Sam in the Bronx that was Burning.  26 year old lefty Don Gullett is on the mound against his former team.  Gullett's also in the dugout for the Reds, having won game one.  Time and space bend and twist; the Yankee version of Don Gullett is on the mound today - but in Game 5, on this same mound, will stand the Reds version of Don Gullett.  So - we discussed Gullett through '75 back in game 1; neck and shoulder issues cost him much of '76, but he still won 11 games and had an ERA of 3. Gullett won game 1 of the NLCS. In the World Series, Gullett beat the Yankees in Game 1, dislocating his ankle in the process.  In the off season New York gave him a 6 year deal for 2 million bucks and he switched sides.  Injuries got him again this year, but he managed 14 wins. He started game 1 of the ALCS, lasting just 2 innings, he started both Games 1 and 5 of the World Series, going 0-1.  Pete Rose singles.  Joe Morgan walks.  Johnny Bench walks and the bases are loaded - do his former teammates have Gullett's number today?  Has to be a concern for Billy.  But Gullett escapes unscathed.
1st: Pat Darcy is a 25 year old RH, spent a year at Mesa Community College and signed with the Astros in '69, 5 years later, still in the Astros system, he was sent to the Reds. Darcy, Nolan, Eastwick were all in AAA together, he got a late season call up in '74 and this is his first full big league season.  He won 11, had a 3.58 ERA, he didn't pitch in the NLCS and then in the World Series gave up the Carlton Fisk homer that ended Game Six, one of the more famous blows in baseball history.  He gives up a single to Mickey Rivers, who then swipes second.  Cliff Johnson's in the lineup at DH, he walks.  Darcy gets one - but Nettles singles home the game's first run.  And then Chambliss singles home the game's second run.  Darcy gets the second -- but then Roy White doubles home two more and it is a huge first inning for the Bombers.  Darcy walks Randolph -- and Bucky Dent singles home the fifth run of the inning, the Yankees have batted around on Pat Darcy.  He does not escape the first inning and it is really unlikely we see him again in the series.  Clay Kirby is a 27 year old RH, 10 wins and a 4.72 ERA and he enters.  He ends it -- Reds 0 Yankees 5

2nd: The Reds DH for the 3 games in New York is Dan Driessen.  A stint with a Black semi-pro team in South Carolina at the age of 17 got Driessen a contract with the Reds in '69, he and Griffey were A ball teammates. Blocked at first by Perez, Driessen came up as a third baseman in '73 and he was third in the Rookie of the Year.  This year he was a bench player, hitting .281.  He didn't play in the NLCS and was 0-2 in the World Series. Driessen singles and that's all.
2nd: Kirby gets two - then gives up a Nettles homer; that's the Yankee third baseman's second of the series and this is a blowout.  Reds 0 Yankees 6

3rd: Morgan walks with one out and Bench singles; Foster singles and the Reds are on the board.  Gullett walks Perez - the bases are loaded; can the Reds get an extra base hit?  Maybe they don't need one - Gullett walks Driessen and Griffey - his former teammates really waiting him out and now it is 6-3.  Concepcion singles home 2 and now it's 6-5 and we have a game 3.  Billy goes to the 31 year old lefty Ken Holtzman, he was bad this year, a 5.78 ERA. He gets out of this.  Reds 5 Yankees 6
3rd: Both starting pitchers gone here in game 3 of the Region 1 Final.  After an out, Roy White doubles.  White was a second baseman in high school in Compton, California - the shortstop was Reggie Smith.  He signed with the Yankees and started in their system in '62 and was called up in late '65.  In '68 he won the left field job, the next year he made the All Star team. In 1970 White hit .296, 22 homers, 94 RBI, 109 runs scored.  In '71, White broke the AL record for sac flies in the season, in '72, he led the AL in walks and in 1976, White led the AL in runs scored.  He hit .294 in the '76 ALCS and then struggled against the Reds in the World Series, hitting .133. White hit .268 this season and only had 7 plate appearances in the postseason, giving way to Lou Piniella, with whom he is platooning in this series.  Kirby gets the second out, then Dent singles home White -- and Mickey Rivers hits a two run jack to right and the Yanks have re-established this lead.  Wild - absolutely wild one here at the Boogie Down.  Kirby walks Johnson/Jackson back to back - and then loads the bases by walking Nettles.  How long does Sparky wait here?  Chambliss clears the bases with a double and the Yankees have added 6 more runs on the inning.  Kirby stays in the game - Sparky might be waving the white flag - Munson doubles home Chambliss.  It's just the third inning!  Reds 5 Yankees 13

4th: Pete Rose reaches on an error.  Rose went to the same high school from which Don Zimmer graduated.  On the day of his graduation, in 1960, he signed with the hometown Reds, three years later he was the Reds second baseman.  Rose was Rookie of the Year in '63, made the All Star team in '65, won batting titles in '68 and '69. Rose was NL MVP in '73 and had that brawl with the Mets in the NLCS after a takeout slide of Bud Harrelson.  Rose had moved from second to the OF when Morgan arrived and this year moved to third.  Rose was the World Series MVP with a .485 OBP.  Holtzman gets an out - then Bench homers, it's now 13-7, Holtzman gets the second out - then walks Perez -- and Dan Driessen hits a 2 run homer to center -- and now it's 13-9 in the damndest baseball game you're ever gonna see.  Griffey singles and that's all.  Reds 9 Yankees 13
4th: 22 year old RH Tom Carroll has a 4.98 ERA and he's the third Reds pitcher. He gets 2 and then Mickey Rivers singles.  Rivers spent 2 years at Miami-Dade Jr. College and was selected 40th overall by the Braves in '69. His second agent was Miami Dolphins Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti.  The Braves moved him to the Angels in a trade involving Hoyt Wilhelm and he debuted in California in 1970. Rivers was the Angels everyday center fielder in both '74 and '75 and led the league in triples both seasons.  He came to the Yankees with Figueroa for Bobby Bonds before the next season and then finished 3rd in the AL MVP in his first Yankee campaign.  This year, a 28 year old Rivers hit .326 in the regular season, .396 in the ALCS.  Caroll then walks Johnson/Jackson to load the bases.  Nettles singles and it's 14 runs for the Yanks.  Chambliss singles -- two score - that's 16 Yankee runs.  Munson then singles - it's 17-9, Game 3 of the Region 1 Final is a game we are unlikely to forget anytime soon. White singles and another run scores.  Reds 9 Yankees 18

5th: Geronimo singles.  Holtzman still in the game - he gets 2 out - then Bench singles and Foster doubles both of them home.  Reds 11 Yankees 18
5th: 1-2-3. I repeat.  1-2-3

6th: Holtzman gets the first, then Griffey singles.  That's all.
6th: Carroll gets 2, then Chambliss singles  That's all.  It appears that things have calmed down here in New York.

7th: 21 year old RH Gil Patterson is the next Yankee pitcher; Rose singles, Morgan walks, but the Reds do not score.
7th: White and Randolph hit back to back singles. Dent walks to load them up - a Rivers sac fly scores the 19th run.  34 year old RH Clay Carroll enters - a Johnson sac fly scores the 20th Yankee run, which probably means free slices from somewhere. Reds 11 Yankees 20

8th: Driessen walks, Griffey reached on an error and finally, after all these runs, someone gets hit - it's Geronimo - but the Reds do not score.
8th: Nettles homers again -- that adds the extra point to this Yankee win.  Bengals 11 Giants 21

9th: Patterson stays on for the third inning, he gets one then walks Bench, and it ends here.

GAME FOUR

1st:  The Yankee bats just exploded all over Reds pitching in game 3 - and as Mike Torrez stands on the mound, his Yankees are up 2 games to 1 in this best of 7 series.  30 year old RH, 14-12, 3.82. Torrez signed with the Cards out of a Kansas high school in '64, called up late in the '67 season. 10-4 in '69, 3.59. In '71, Torrez was dealt to the Expos.  1974 saw Torrez win 15 games and then he and Ken Singleton were dealt to the Orioles.  Big 1975 for Torrez, 20-9, 3.06 ERA. Torrez was part of the package that then when to Oakland for Reggie Jackson. Torrez led the league in ERA in '76, 2.50 and early this season, the A's sent him to New York. Torrez lost game 3 of the ALCS, but pitched well in relief of Guidry in Game 5.  Torrez won two games in the World Series, including the clinching game 6.  He walks Rose, Morgan then rocks a double to right center that scores a run.  Torrez gets one- then an error allows Foster to reach - Torrez gets the second; and the second error of the inning allows Griffey to reach and Morgan to score. Reds 2 Yankees 0
1st: The Reds turn to 32 year old lefty Fred Norman to even up this series  12-4, 3.73. The A's signed him out of a Miami high school in '61, we was sent to the Cubs organization before the '64 season, made a few appearances with the big club and moved to the Dodgers in '67. His first real serious big league stint was in the Dodger bullpen in '70, they sent him to San Diego during the '71 season and he made the Padres rotation.  In a September '72 game Norman struck out 15 Reds and Cincinnati acquired him at the deadline the following season.  Norman got a no decision in Game 4 of the '73 NLCS. This year he led the Reds in strikeouts, won Game 2 of the NLCS and lost Game 4 of the World Series.  He gets the first - then Cliff Johnson homers to right center to put the Yanks on the board.  Reds 2 Yankees 1

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Nettles singles, that's it.

3rd: Joe Morgan homers to make it 3-1; Morgan has now reached 11 times in the series.  Torrez gets 1 and then gives up a homer to George Foster. Griffey follows with a single - that's all.  Reds 4 Yankees 1
3rd: Bucky Dent walks.  Dent was Miami Dade county baseball player of the year his senior high school season and the Whtie Sox drafted him in 1970. He came up to the big club in '73 and was 2nd in the AL Rookie of the Year to Mike Hargrove in '74. Just before this season, the White Sox dealt him to the Yankees for Oscar Gamble.  He hit .247 this year, .214 in the ALCS, .263 in the World Series.  He's a year away from becoming one of the most hated men in Massachusetts.  That's all.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Reggie walks, Bench guns him out trying to steal on a strikeout to Munson - and then Nettles hits his 4th home run of the series - that's a new tournament high.  Rivers singles, that's all  Reds 4 Yankees 2

5th: Johnny Bench walks.  Bench was valedictorian of his Oklahoma high school class of 21 students; the Reds took him 36th overall in '65.  He came up in late '67 and was the everyday catcher in '68, in which he was NL Rookie of the Year at the age of 20.  In 1970 - he was the NL MVP; in '74 he led the league in RBI.  This year Bench battled a regular season shoulde injury and a postseason flu.  Griffey walks 2 outs later, the Reds don't add to the lead.
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Concepcion singles with one away, Rose then reaches by error and Morgan walks -- bases loaded, just one out - Reds really very close to blowing this one open on Mike Torrez.  Sac fly for Bench.  Reds 5 Yankees 2
6th: Cliff Johnson walks.  Johnson was the Astros 83rd pick in '66 out of a San Antonio high school.  It takes 6 years before he sees action in Houston and isn't up for good until '74.  Johnson's a bat only, never finding a position - the Yankees got him at the deadline this season.  Norman gets 1, then Munson singles and Nettles walks to load the bases with just one out -- big spot here, tying run is on base here in the 6th.  When does Sparky go to the pen?  Rivers reaches on an error that scores a run -- Chambliss grounds out to score another.  Yankees are right back in this.  Reds 5 Yankees 4

7th: Billy turns to Dick Tidrow, the Indians drafted him out of Chabot College in January, '67, he'd come up in '72. Early in the '74 season, he and Chambliss were dealt to New York.  As Sparky Lyle's set up man, Tidrow had a 3.12 ERA in '75, 2.67 in '76.  He won game 5 of the '76 ALCS. This year, injuries forced Tidrow into the rotation in August and he went 5-0.  1-2-3.
7th: It's Will McEnaney for the Reds.  McEnaney is a twin; drafted after graduating from an Ohio high school by the Reds in 8th round in '70. The Reds brought him up in mid '74, this season he had a 2.74 ERA.  He pitched in 5 games in the World Series and was on the mound when the Reds won game 7.  Lou Piniella singles with one out, after the second out Reggie singles and the Yanks have the tying run at third base --- but do not score.

8th: 1-2-3, Tidrow comes in and retires 6 straight.
8th: Nettles and Rivers single back to back and the Yankees again threaten - runners on the corners with nobody out, trailing by a run.  That ends McEnaney's day and Pedro Borbon comes on; he gets one -- but then Willie Randolph singles home the tying run.  And then Bucky Dent singles home the go ahead run -- the Yankees have taken the lead.  Piniella grounds out -- but it scores another - it's 7-5 Yankees and now this series is really, really in jeopardy for the Reds.  34 year old RH Clay Carroll enters, he gives up a base hit to Johnson, that's all -- but the Yankees have taken the lead.  Reds 5 Yankees 7

9th: Sparky Lyle comes on.  3 outs from giving the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

Morgan grounds to Chambliss.  Takes it himself.
Lyle strikes out Bench.
Foster grounds to third - nice play by Nettles - onto first and it's done.

The Reds really needed this one and only got 5 hits against Yankee pitching; Tidrow and Lyle 3 perfect innings from the pen - and Nettles hit his 4th homer of the series.  Yanks are up 3-1 and can clinch this series in game 5 at Yankee Stadium.

GAME FIVE

1st: The Reds have lost 3 straight; including that 21 run Yankee explosion in game 3 and the big 8th inning comeback in Game 4.  Now - they're up against it, down 3-1 and needing to win today to force a return to Cincinnati for Game 6.  Standing in their way - Ed Figuerora.  None of Figueroa's postseason numbers are good - 31 total innings pitched in his career, 7.47 ERA.  He gets one and gives up a Morgan double - Joe Morgan has now reached 13 times in the series, he is carrying Cincinnati offensively.  Figueroa gets the second out - then Foster singles home Morgan and the Reds are on the board.  Reds 1 Yankees 0
1st: It's a tale of 2 Don Gulletts - the one standing on the mound doesn't know about the one in the opposite dugout (or does he...) the one on the mound won game 1 for the Reds - and if he can beat his future teammates today, he keeps the Reds alive and we head back to Ohio.  Roy White is back in the lineup in left today - and he hits Gullett's first pitch over the wall in left field to tie the game.  It is the 9th Yankee homer of the series.  Reggie singles with one out, that's all.  Reds 1 Yankees 1

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Mickey Rivers singles, he's reached 8 times in the series.  That's all.

3rd: 1-2-3, 7 straight for Figueroa - Yanke pitching held the Reds to 5 hits in game 4, if that happens again today this series is over.
3rd: Gullett gets one -- and then it's White again with another homer!  Roy White, given the start by Billy even against the lefty Gullett has hit two home runs and the Yankees go out in front.  Reds 1 Yankees 2

4th: 1-2-3, that is 10 straight for Ed Figueroa - are the Reds about to get bounced?
4th: Gullett gets one -- and then Graig Nettles hits his 5th home run of the series!  Graig Nettles homers over the wall in right field!  5 homers for Nettles and the Yankees add to that lead.  Reds 1 Yankees 3

5th: Perez hits a one out double, but Figueroa keeps him from crossing the plate.
5th: 1-2-3

6th: 1-2-3 -- Figueroa has given the Yankees all they could have wanted today and they are 9 outs away from winning Region 1.
6th: Reggie walks with one out - nothing results.

7th: Foster singles.  Reds need a run here.  Figueroa gets 2 and then Perez singles.  Tying runs on base -- does Billy go to the pen?  He doesn't and Figueroa gets through it.
7th: Gullett gets 2 and walks Randolph, Dent then singles - does Sparky go to his pen?  He doesn't and Gullett gets through it.

8th: 6 outs left.  Concepcion bounces right back to Figueroa - throws to first.  One away.
Rose grounds to Randolph - throw to first.  Two away.
Morgan grounds to Dent - throw to first.  Ed Figueroa is shutting down the Reds and the Yankees are 3 outs away from winning the Region One Final.
8th: Cliff Johnson singles - Gullett gets one and then Munson singles.  Yankees looking for insurance.  Gullett gets the second out and and then gives up a Rivers base hit -- that scores Johnson, it's 4-1 Yankees and that might be the end of this series.  Reds 1 Yankees 4

9th: Figueroa stays on the mound.

Bench grounds to Dent -- onto Chambliss. One.
Foster laces a single to center.
Driessen grounds to Chambliss - flip to Figueroa - two away, Foster at second.
Griffey hits one to left -- to the track -- White is there -- and that's the series.

Pandemonium - the fans rush the field; a huge celebration at the mound, Figueroa and Munson embrace -- the camera cuts to White, who hit 2 homers today - and then to Nettles, he hit 5 home runs and is the MVP.  The 1977 New York Yankees have won Region 1 - they are one of the final 8 teams left in this tournament - the next time we see them they will face the Winner of Region 8.  The New York Yankees - Region 1 Champs!

It's the Big Red Machine, arguably the greatest lineup in baseball history. They finished 20 games up in the NL West. The Reds were 64-17 at home, best home record in NL history.  They clinched a playoff birth on September 7. If the Reds win it becomes almost a rematch of the 1976 World Series. Like the Yanks - this is the front half of back to back Champs.  Don Gullett is on both the '75 Reds and the '77 Yankees.

Yankees 98-56 (Pythag: 92-62) Mgr. Joe McCarthy

Sparky probably just throws the same 8 out there every day; there's pressure on Perez, Driessen hits just as well and he's a left handed bat - Yankees have all RH starters.  Gullett's only lefty starter in the series.

Lineups:
C-Bench; two of the great all time catchers but it's a solid win for 27 year old Bench over 36 year old Dickey
1B-Perez, and Driessen right behind.
2B-Morgan, by a million miles he's the best player in the series.
SS-Concepcion - big year with the glove for Davey
3B-Rose
LF-Keller, Yanks first win here, over Foster, Keller and Gordon are the top Yankee position players
CF-Geronimo
RF-Griffey, Reds at 7 spots on the diamond and they're not that close
SP1-Chandler, best pitcher in the series is the Yankee ace, and he can throw twice if they make game 4
SP2-Bonham
SP3-Borowy - Yanks have the advantage at all 3 starters and solidly so
Bullpen: Reds, solidly so - Yanks have just one effective guy, Murphy, Reds have four solid bullpen arms they can turn to

Reds 8 Yankees 4: Reds have maybe the greatest lineup ever and they dominate their Yankee counterparts, but the Reds rotation isn't that good and that shows up here as well; Reds have the better pen, Reds have the better seed, Reds have the top player in the series.  Reds are favored.

Winners will face the 1977 Yankees in the Regional Finals; yup - the same Don Gullett who just was co-MVP of the other Regional semi is the Reds ace here.  If the Reds win - it's Gullett v Gullett.

GAME ONE

1st: Hey look, it's Don Gullett.  Rewind 2 years, he's a 24 year old lefty with the Reds. 15-4, 2.42.  It's his 5th big league season and it's his big year, 5th in the NL Cy Young.  He got 3 starts in the '75 World Series, went 1-1, 4.34 ERA. Gullett walks Bill Dickey with one out - gets the second out and then Nick Etten doubles Dickey home.  Billy Johnson follows with a run scoring double of his own and it is the Yankees who jump out to the lead.  Yankees 2 Reds 0
1st: The Yankees are sizeable underdogs - but they were underdogs in both rounds 1 and 2 - and in round 2 they swept the '29 A's.  Spud Chandler is a 35 year old RH, 20-4, 1.64. It's Chandler's 7th year in the major leagues and it is his best season - he's the AL MVP.  Joe Morgan singles with one out and then steals second.  Johnny Bench drives a single to center and the Reds are on the board.  George Foster singles, Reds have men on the corners.  Ken Griffey grounds out - it scores the tying run.  Yankees 2 Reds 2

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: Joe Gordon homers to left and the Yanks are back in front.  Gordon's 28, it's his 6th year in the majors, he's about to miss the next two for the War.  Gordon's big year was last year - but he still leads the league in intentional walks this year.  He went 4 for 17 in the Series with a homer.  Dickey draws another walk, Keller then walks, but Gullett's able to stem the tide.  Yankees 3 Reds 2
3rd: Morgan singles again; the NL MVP is 31, it's his 13th big league season, 4th with the Reds.  He led the league in walks, OBP, OPS, OPS+ and he won his 3rd straight Gold Glove.  He steals second again.  But Chandler strands them and the Yanks maintain the slim lead.

4th: Stuffy Stirnweiss draws a two out walk; he's a 24 year old rookie backup to Frankie Crosetti, but gets the first shot in the series because of a little better bat.  He really takes advantage of the depleted wartime talent the next two seasons, with 2 top 5 MVP finishes and then immediately drops off.  Gullett strands him.
4th: 1-2-3

5th: 1-2-3
5th: Concepcion and Gullett reach on back to back Yankee errors - this Reds offense has way too much horsepower to make mistakes.  Rose walks and the bases are loaded with nobody out.  Morgan singles for the third time today to tie the score.  Bench reaches on the third error of the inning and it scores 2.  Chandler gets one, walks Griffey, and the bases are loaded once again.  A Perez sac fly scores another run.  Big inning for the Reds, all with just one hit.  Yankees 3 Reds 6

6th: 1-2-3, 7 straight for Gullett, the Yankees don't have a hit since Gordon's homer.
6th: Concepcion walks, and out later Rose triples and now it's 7-3.  Rose is 34, in his 13th big league season.  He was 5th in the NL MVP this year, led the league in runs and doubles.  Yankees 3 Reds 7

7th: Chandler stays in to hit for himself and he doubles with 2 away.  That's all.
7th: 1-2-3

8th: Bill Dickey homers and the Yankees cut the deficit.  Dickey's 36 and it is his 17th season as a New York Yankee.  He loses the next 2 years because of the War.  Dickey finished 8th in the AL MVP.  Nick Etten doubles with one out - how long a leash does Sparky give Gullett?  He gers the second - then walks Johnny Lindell and ends it here.  Yankees 4 Reds 7
8th: Concepcion hits a one out single.  The Reds shortstop is 27, it's his 6th big league year, second All Star appearance, second Gold Glove.  That's all.

9th: The Reds turn to 24 year old RH Rawly Eastwick to wrap this up; 2.60 and 22 saves.  He gets one - then 28 year old left handed pinch hitter Ron Weatherly comes off the bench and homers.  Eastwick gets the second - then he walks Dickey.  He then walks Charlie Keller -- that puts the tying run on base - it's 7-5 Reds, two outs - tying run is on base -- and Nick Etten singles.

That's going to score Dickey -- and now it is 7-6 with the tying run just 90 feet away.

Billy Johnson comes to the plate, Eastwick gets ahead 0-2 - and Johnson bloops a single to right center -- Keller scores - Etten goes to third -- and this game is tied!  The Yankees tie the score with 3 in the 9th inning and still - still runners are on the corners.  That's it for Eastwick, 23 year old lefty Will McEnaney has 15 saves and a 2.47 ERA and he comes on.

He walks Johnny Lindell and the bases are loaded.

And Bud Metheny rips a single to right!  That scores the go ahead run!  The Yankees have shocked - they have shocked this sold out Riverfront crowd with 4 in the 9th inning!  Yankees 8 Reds 7
9th: 32 year old RH Johnny Murphy has a dozen wins and a 2.51 ERA and if he can get these 3 outs it will complete and incredible come from behind game one win for New York that changes the whole complexion of this series.

Morgan reaches on an error- the 4th Yankee miscue of the day.
Morgan then steals second - his 3rd stolen base.
Bench flies to deep center - Morgan is into third standing up.

Tying run at third.  One away.  George Foster singles to right center and the Reds have tied this one up.  The Reds blow the big 9th inning lead but the game is all tied again at 8.

Griffey reaches on the 5th Yankee error of the day and Joe McCarthy makes the call for Marius Russo, the Yankee 5th starter; he's a lefty with a 3.72 ERA.  And he gets Perez with the huge 6-4-3 to end the inning.  Yankees 8 Reds 8

10th: Our first extra inning game of the round.  31 year old RH pinch hitter Tuck Stainback comes off the bench with a leadoff double.  Joe Gordon strikes out.  McEnaney then gets Dickey to fly to right.

Sparky makes a gutsty call here - walk Charlie Keller to pitch to Nick Etten; that sets up a force play but puts another man on.  2 on, 2 out.  McEnaney grounds to Perez...he's going to take it to the bag himself.  And we head to the bottom.
10th: 39 year old RH Jim Turner gets the call for the Yanks - 3.53, Cesar Geronimo hits his first pitch for a double and the winning run is in scoring position.  Concepcion flies to left.  One away.

Off the bench comes Terry Crowley - 28 year old LH pinch hitter; he was co-MVP, just for pinch hitting, in the Reds round 2 victory over the '41 Yanks.  He singles to right -- Geronimo is waved home -- Metheny throws home - Dickey applies the tag...

GAME TWO

1st: Gary Nolan stands on the Riverfront mound looking to put the Reds home 2-0; 27 year old RH, 15-9, 3.16. It's his 7th big league year, he led the league in walks/9.  He got two World Series starts this year and had a 6 ERA.  He gives up a triple to Charlie Keller, he's 26, he's an All Star in his 5th big league season.  He misses next year for the War.  This year he led the league in walks, OPS, OPS+. Dickey walks, he's reached 5 times - Nick Etten hits into a double play, that scores a run.  Yankees 1 Reds 0
1st: 29 year old RH Tiny Bonham is going for Joe McCarthy's Yankees.  15-8, 2.27. Bonham's an All Star in his 4th season.  It's the second best year he'll ever have.  He started once in this World Series, went 8, gave up 4 earned including 2 homers.  Morgan walks with one out, that's all.

2nd: Bud Metheny doubles, he's a 28 year old rookie, it's his only above average big league season and he's out of the league not after the end of the War.  Nolan gets 2 - then Stuffy Stirnweiss doubles and the Yanks have another run.  Yankees 2 Reds 0
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: Keller walks, that's all.
3rd: 1-2-3, good start for Bonham, 8 straight retired.

4th: Gordon walks, that's all.
4th: Joe Morgan singles, it's the first Reds hit.  Bonham gets two and then Ken Griffey triples to give the Reds a run.  Griffey's 25, it's his 3rd season, he'll spend 5 years with the Yankees in the 80s, he hit .269 in the '75 Series.  Yankees 2 Reds 1

5th: 1-2-3, Nolan hasn't allowed a hit since the 2nd.
5th: Cesar Geronimo singles.  He's 27, in his 7th season, he won his 2nd straight Gold Glove.  He hit .280 in the Series.  Concepcion singles and the Reds have them on the corners.  Bonham gets a Nolan double play but that scores the tying run.  Rose doubles, Morgan then walks -- Bonham wanted nothing to do with the NL MVP in that spot -- but that's a mistake; Johnny Bench launches a 3 run homer and now the Reds are up 5-2.  Bench was co-MVP of the round 2 win; he's 27, in his 9th season, it's his second straight 4th place MVP finish, 8th straight All Star apperance, 8th straight Gold Glove.  He struggled in the '75 Series, hitting .207. 30 year old RH Bill Zuber is the new Yankee pitcher, 3.89, he ends it.  Yankees 2 Reds 5

6th: 1-2-3, 8 straight from Nolan and the Reds have grabbed hold of this one.
6th: Griffey singles. He was MVP in Round 1 for this club.  Perez singles.  Perez is 33, in his 12th season, he's an All Star for the 6th time.  He struggled in the World Series, hit .179.  Zuber gets an out, then Concepcion singles home a run.  Johnny Murphy enters for New York - gets the second out then gives up a run scoring single to Rose, the World Series MVP and the Reds are rolling.  Yankees 2 Reds 7

7th: Gordon walks.  Metheny singles  Just the 4th Yankee hit today.  Nolan escapes.
7th: This sold out crowd does not expect to see another home game until Game 1 of the Regional Final; 1-2-3

8th: Will McEnaney won game 1 out of the pen and Sparky calls on him here.  1-2-3.
8th: The 23 year old lefty Tommy Byrne enters, he's got a 6.54 ERA - he gets 2, walks Concepcion, and ends the inning.

9th: After an out - Joe Gordon homers - his second homer of the series.  Sparky brings on Pedro Borbon, he's a 28 year old RH with a 2.95 ERA and he ends the game.

GAME THREE

1st: Hank Borowry was MVP of the Yankees round 1 win; 27 year old RH, 14-9, 2.82. He's in his second season, a year away from his only All Star selection, two years away from a top 10 MVP finish.  He started once in the '43 World Series and he won, 8 innings, 2 earned. He gives up a one out Morgan single, Morgan's reached 7 times - but that's all.
1st: 25 year old RH Pat Darcy is going for the Reds sweep today.  11-5, 3.58. This is a second year of a 3 year big league career - Darcy retired with 28 career starts and 22 of them were in '75.  He threw 4 innings in the '75 Series and gave up 2 earned.  Nick Etten walks with 2 out, that's all.

2nd: Dan Driessen walks with one out - Perez is on the bench today, Driessen getting a shot against all these right handed Yankee arms.  Driessen's 23, third year in the bigs.  He was 0-2 in the '75 Series.  Griffey singles and the Reds have them on the corners.  Geronimo grounds to the right side and the Reds plate the first run.  Reds 1 Yankees 0
2nd: Ron Weatherly walks, Billy Johnson singles - he's a 24 year old rookie and finished 4th in the MVP.  Strong series, he hit .300.  Darcy stifles them though - holding onto that lead.

3rd: Darcy singles, he had 4 hits all year.  Borowy gets two - but here comes the game 2 hero Bench, he doubles down the line to score the run  Reds 2 Yankees 0
3rd: Keller walks and out later Nick Etten walks. Etten was Yanks MVP in the prior round; he's 29, 5th year in the bigs, first in New York, he was 7th this year in the AL MVP. Really bad World Series, hit .105, just walked once and it's the only postseason action he'd ever see.  Again, Darcy escapes.

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Johnson singles with one out - that's all.

5th: 1-2-3
5th: Keller walks with one out - that's it.

6th: Bench singles with one out - that's all.  Quiet bats today - but the Yanks can't afford a long slumber.
6th: Sparky goes to the pen for Will McEnaney, Darcy has a shutout, but Sparky is looking to end this series right now  1-2-3

7th: 1-2-3, Borowy really strong today, but will it be just short?
7th: 1-2-3, Yanks have just 2 hits.

8th: Rose singles with one away, but that's all.
8th: McEnaney walks Keller and that brings on Pedro Borbon - Reds 6 outs from the series sweep.  He ends the inning.

9th: Borowy gets 2 - then Ken Griffey homers to right center -- that could be the insurance - celebration in the Reds dugout - this Reds team appears to be on their way to the Regional Final to meet the '77 Yankees.  Geronimo singles, that's where it ends.  Reds 3 Yankees 0
9th: Rawly Eastwick takes the ball looking to end the series.

He strikes out Gordon.
Metheny flies to Geronimo.
Weatherly grounds to Driessen...he's going to take it to the bag himself and it is done.

Reds 3
Yankees 0
WP Darcy
LP Borowy

4 Reds pitchers combine on a 2 hitter and the Reds sweep the Yankees.

Rose 5x/triple, double
Morgan 7x, 3 steals
Bench 4x/3 run HR, double
Griffey 5x/triple, HR
Crowley 1x, game winner.

MVP is tough - Bench won game 2, Crowley's hit won game 1 but Morgan really set the tone - today was all about Reds pitching and McEnaney is worth considering for the work he did throughout the series.  We'll say its Bench - the 3 run homer is the big blow of the series and he added that run scoring double today.

And so - we reach the end of Region 1.

The 1977 Yankees will take on the 1975 Reds - winner advances to the final 8 -- the final 8! - of the tournament.

128 Team MLB Tournament - Regional Semi-Final: 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers v. 1977 World Champion New York Yankees

Thursday, October 8, 2020

 End of Round 2

65. 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers v. 97. 1977 World Champion New York Yankees

We kick off the Regional Semi-Finals here; Best of 5, Sparky Anderson's Tigers taking on Billy Martin's Yankees.  Dave Bergman is the primary first baseman for the Tigers; he got 4 at bats for the Yankees seven years prior.  We will see Yogi in many series later on as a Yankee player; he's a coach with the '77 team.  Billy managed the Tigers in the early 70s; it ended badly, as things did with Billy.

Tigers 104-58, (Pythag: 99-63) Mgr. Sparky Anderson (AL Mgr of the Year)
Won AL East
d. Royals 3-0 in ALCS (MVP-Kirk Gibson)
d. Padres 4-1 in World Series (MVP-Alan Trammell)
d. #64 1931 Athletics 2-0 (MVP-Larry Herndon)
d. #128 1979 3-2 Orioles 3-2 (MVP-Kirk Gibson/Alan Trammell)

All-Stars: RP Willie Hernandez (AL MVP, AL Cy Young) OF Chet Lemon, SP Jack Morris, C Lance Parrish, SS Alan Trammell, 2B Lou Whitaker

Hall of Famers: Jack Morris, Alan Trammell, Sparky Anderson

The Tigers led the AL east wire to wire, opening the season 35-5.  They were 9-0, they were 16-1.

Yankees 100-62 (Pythag: 99-63) Mgr. Billy Martin
Won AL East
d. Royals 3-2 in ALCS
d. Dodgers 4-2 in World Series (MVP-Reggie Jackson)
d. #32. 2007 Red Sox 2-1 (MVP-Reggie Jackson)
d. #33  1943 Cardinals 3-1 (MVP-Graig Nettles)

All-Stars: OF Reggie Jackson, RP Sparky Lyle (AL Cy Young) C Thurman Munson, 3B Graig Nettles (5th AL MVP) 2B Willie Randolph

Hall of Famers: Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Bobby Cox (first base coach)

Reggie's first year in New York; also the year of the blackout.  Steinbrenner feuded with Billy - Billy feuded with Reggie.  Reggie said he was the straw that stirs the drink - it's the Bronx Zoo Yankees.  The front half of back to back Champions.

Yankees
CF Rivers (28)  (LH)  115     4.1

DH May (29) (LH) 66
SP3 Gullett (L)  (26)      111   2.4
SP2 Figueroa (28)   111   3.2

One of the few series we've had that's all DH, DH in both parks.  The Tigers have all RH starters, so we're likely to see this lefty heavy Yankee lineup.  Piniella awaits..probably for an appearance in Game 3 for whomever didn't hit in Detroit.  Blair only sees action if Rivers doesn't hit and he'll get at least two games to show he can and more likely 3.  The Yankees 4th starter is Mike Torrez and he would join the rotation if they advance to the Regional Final.

Tigers
SS Trammell (26)   136  6.6
CF Lemon (29)       135  6.2
RF Gibson (27) (LH)     142   4.1

3B Evans (37)  (LH)    106      1.6
LF Jones (29)  (LH)     137      2.2
DH Grubb (35)   (LH) 131      1.3
C Castillo (27)  84
SS Baker (23)  35
SP2 Morris (29)   109      3.8
SP3 Berenguer (29)  113   2

Yankees coming with 2 lefties, so lot of RH bats in the Tiger lineup.  For sure, expect platoons at 1B/LF/DH - 3B is up in the air, HoJo is going to get game one to see if he maybe plays every day.  Could also be HoJo doesn't play at all after game one, with a possible Brookens/Evans platoon.  Probably, Dave Rozema gets the call as the 4th starter if the Tigers reach the regional finals.

Position by Position:
C-Yankees, Munson over Parrish
1B-Yankees, Chambliss/Bergman is a push with the bat, but Chambliss has more WAR and Bergman platoons
2B-Yankees, Whitaker has more bat than Randolph, but Randolph has more WAR on the strength of his glove.
SS-Tigers, Trammell has more WAR than anyone on either side.
3B-Yankees, Nettles in every phase over all the Tigers 3B options
LF-Yankees, both sides of a platoon favor NY, White has more WAR than Jones, Piniella more than Herndon.
CF-Tigers, Lemon has the second highest WAR of anyone on either side
RF-Push, Reggie and Gibson are dead even in WAR
DH-Push, Johnson has more WAR and more OPS+ than any Tigers option, but he's RH against an all RH staff and the Tigers have more flexibility here.
SP1-Yankees, Guidry's the best pitcher in either rotation
SP2-Tigers, Gullett has a tick more ERA+ but Morris has much more WAR.
SP3-Yankees, opposite of SP2, Berenguer just edges Figueroa in ERA+ but it flips in WAR
Bullpen: Tigers, Hernandez just beats out Lyle in ERA+, although both are strong, set up men Tidrow and Lopez are essentially a wash, Lopez a tick better ERA+, but then the only Yankee with an ERA+ north of 100 is Dock Ellis, who pitched 19 innings all season, Tigers have Bill Scherrer, in exactly the same spot as Ellis, plus Doug Bair. It's not an overwhelming advantage, but you prefer Detroit at each turn just a little bit.

Yankees 7 Tigers 4 -- so, position by position it's the Yankees with the better club; mitigated a little by the two top players being Tigers.  Detroit is the better seed.

This could be a really close series...but we'll say by a hair it's the Yankees who are favored.

Ready for the first Regional Semi?

GAME ONE

1st: Here we go.  25 year old RH Dan Petry will throw the first pitch of the Regional Semi-Finals. 18-8, 3.24 This is Petry's 6th season in the big leagues, all with Detroit. He was 5th in the AL Cy Young, the 18 wins will be his career high. Petry started twice in the '84 World Series and got knocked around - 8 earned in 8 innings. His first pitch is laced into center by Mickey Rivers for a base hit.  Cliff Johnson gets the DH spot in game one, and he follows with a base hit to left center, Rivers goes all the way to third to put men on the corners.  Reggie Jackson grounds out to the right side - everyone advances a base and the Yankees will take the lead in the top of the first. Yankees 1 Tigers 0
1st: 26 year old lefty Ron Guidry takes the ball for the Yankees; they have 11 squads left in the final 32, here's the first.  16-7, 2.82. Guidry's in his third big league season but his first in the Yankee rotation  He was 7th in the AL Cy Young and led the league in fielding independent pitching.  He's a year away from an all time great pitching season.  Guidry got one start in the World Series this year - complete game 4 hitter, gave up 2 earned runs, struck out 7.  He gives up a leadoff double to Alan Trammell.  Chet Lemon then walks - two on and nobody out.  But Guidry gets the next 3 Tigers and we go to the second.

2nd: Roy White singles.  White's getting the start over Lou Piniella, with all the Tigers starters being RH; if he hits, he keeps playing.  White's 33, this is his 13th big league season, all in New York.  It's his last year as an everyday player.  White played very little in the '77 World Series, hitless in 2 at bats.  He comes all the way around to score when Thurman Munson triples.  Willie Randolph grounds out to the right side and now it's Yankees 3 Tigers 0
2nd: Barbaro Garbey singles with 1 out.  Garbey got the start at first today, Sparky is going with all his right handed bats against Guidry. Garbey's 27, in his rookie season.  He plays just two more years.  He got 12 at bats in the '84 series and went hitless - so, here's some redemption, I think this is his first action of the tournament.  Lou Whitaker walks, Tigers again with 2 on, Guidry gets the second out -- but Trammell comes through with his second hit, a run scoring single to left center.  Chet Lemon follows with a single to score Whitaker. Yankees 3 Tigers 2

3rd: Graig Nettles draws a two out walk, Nettles was MVP of the Yanks second round victory over the 1943 Cards.  The Yankee third baseman is 32, it's his 11th big league season, 5th in New York.  He finished 5th in the AL MVP this season.  Nettles was 4 for 21 at the plate in the '77 World Series.  That's it.
3rd: Rusty Kuntz walks.  Kuntz is opening up the series as Sparky's RH DH option, he's 29, it's his 6th big league season, first in Detroit and by far - by far - the best season of his career.  Next season will be his last.  He struck out in his only World Series at bat. Guidry gets two - then Garbey singles again.  Two hit day for Barbaro Garbey making an unexpected start.  Lou Whitaker then comes through - a double down the right field line -- it clears the bases and Detroit has taken the lead.  Yankees 3 Tigers 4

4th: Munson singles with one out; two hits today for the Yankee catcher.  He's 30, 9th year in the bigs, he was 7th in the AL MVP.  He had a good World Series in '77, hit .320, couple of walks and a homer.  After the second out, Bucky Dent singles.  Petry stops it here.
4th: With 2 outs, Guidry hits Kirk Gibson.  Gibson's 27, it's his 6th season and he finishes 6th in the AL MVP.  He was ALCS MVP, he was co-MVP of the Tigers round 2 win over the '79 Orioles, he had a big, big World Series with an 1.145 OPS, 2 homers, 3 steals, 7 RBI in the Tigers four game sweep.  Kuntz walks, That's all.

5th: 1-2-3
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Chris Chambliss singles.  Chambliss is 28, it's his 7th big league season, 4th with the Yankees (he and Nettles were teammates with the Indians) solid '77 World Series, he hit .292 with a HR.  That's all Petry permits.
6th: Chet Lemon draws a two out walk.  Lemon's 29, this is his 10th big league season, his third in Detroit, he was an All Star this year.  He hit .294 in the Series with a couple steals. Gibson walks.  And then back to back run scoring singles by Kuntz and Larry Herndon - the Tigers are up 6-3 and Guidry is gone.  The Yankee set up man is 30 year old RH Dick Tidrow, he won 11 games and has a 3.16 ERA. He ends it - but the Tigers tack on two and now lead Yankees 3 Tigers 6

7th: 1-2-3, that's a big inning for Petry and the Tigers are in command today.
7th: 1-2-3

GAME TWO

1st: One more at Tiger Stadium; 29 year old RH Jack Morris on the mound.  19-11, 3.60. This is Morris's 8th year in the bigs, he finished 7th in the Cy Young. Watch out for wild pitches, he led the league.  He gets one, then Cliff Johnson puts the Yanks on the board with a homer to left.  Johnson's 29, this is his 7th year in the bigs, the Yankees got him at the deadline from the Astros (for, among other, Dave Bergman, who we'll see in game 3 as Detroit's first baseman).  He was 0-1 in the World Series.  After the second out, Morris walks Graig Nettles and thats all.  Yankees 1 Tigers 0
1st: The Yankees turn today to Don Gullett, 26 year old lefty, 14-4, 3.58. This is his 8th big league season, his first with the Yankees and he's a year away from being all done.  He's pitching today against his longtime manager with the Reds, Sparky Anderson, in the main storyline today.  Alan Trammell doubles, his second double of the series.  Chet Lemon drives him home with a base hit and it's tied.  Kirk Gibson walks, Rusty Kuntz then doubles everybody home - the Tigers have 3 runs, we're only 4 batters in and Tiger Stadium is quaking here in Game 2.  Gullett gets one, then walks Lance Parrish, it ends here.  Yankees 1 Tigers 3

2nd: Thurman Munson singles; he's now reached 3 times in the series.  Morris gets two - but then gives up a double to Bucky Dent that scores a run.  Dent's 25, it's his 5th year in the bigs and first with the Yankees.  He hit a soft .263 in the '77 Series.  Yankees 2 Tigers 3
2nd: Trammell draws a one out walk, he's reached 4 times in the series, but Gullett stops it here.

3rd: Reggie walks with one out, that's the first time he's reached in the series.  He was MVP of the '77 series and of the Yankees round one win over the 2007 Red Sox.  Reggie's 31, this is his 11th big league season and it's his first year in New York.  Reggie was 8th in the AL MVP this year.  He had a monster World Series - a 1.792 OPS, 5 homers, 8 RBI.  Nettles singles him to third, that's all.
3rd: Gibson walks again, he's now reached 5 times in the series.  An out later, Larry Herndon singles.  30 year old Herndon's getting the start against the Yankee lefties; will sit in game 3.  This is his 8th MLB season, third in Detroit.  He hit .333 with a homer in the World Series and was MVP of the Tigers round one win over the '31 A's.  Lance Parrish gets his first hit on the series and it scores a run.  Yankees 2 Tigers 4

4th: 1-2-3
4th: After an out - here's Trammell with a single, he's reached all 3 times today.  That's it

5th: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Morris.
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Chris Chambliss singles with one away, Munson then doubles him to third and the Yanks have two in scoring position.  Morris pitches carefully to Roy White and walks him.  Loaded, only one out.  Morris gets the second - and then once again it is Bucky Bleeping Dent - a double that clears the bases.  Dent comes through with the 2 out double that plates three and the Yankees take the lead.  It ends Morris's day, Aureilio Lopez is the Tigers set up man, he's a 35 year old RH, 10 wins, 14 saves, a 2.94 ERA.  He gives up a Mickey Rivers base hit, that's all.  Yankees 5 Tigers 4
6th: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Gullett and the Yanks hold on to the slim lead headed to the 7th.

7th: Nettles singles with one out, he's reached twice today, that's all.
7th: 1-2-3, 11 straight for Gullett - the lefty holding on.

8th: Willie Randolph singles with one away.  Randolph is 22, his third year in the bigs, second in New York.  He's an All Star.  Had a rough World Series, he hit .160, but did homer.  Mickey Rivers walks after the second out. Back to the pen for Sparky, 33 year old lefty Sid Monge, with a 4.25 ERA -- and he gives up a 3 run blast to Cliff Johnson  It's a 2 homer day for the Yankee DH - a 3 run homer here that probably has tied this series up at a game apiece.  Reggie singles - 34 year old RH Doug Bair enters, he's got a 3.75 ERA.  The inning ends.  Yankees 8 Tigers 4
8th: Rusty Kuntz doubles again, Herndon walks - Gullet gets one, then gives up a double to Lou Whitaker that scores a run.  Whitaker is 27, in his 8th season, he was an All Star and won the Gold Glove this year.  He hit .278 in the World Series.  Billy to the pen for Dick Tidrow and he gets through it.  Yankees 8 Tigers 5

9th: Munson keeps hitting, he singles, White walks - that's it.
9th: Sparky Lyle is called on to close this one out - 32 year old lefty, 13 wins, 26 saves, a 2.17 ERA, It's Lyle's 11th year in the bigs, 6th in the Bronx Zoo.  Like the Tigers closer Hernandez, Lyle won the Cy Young - there aren't too many closer v. closer Cy Young v. Cy Young matchups you'll ever see - Hernandez saved game one, let's see what happens here.

GAME THREE

1st: The series shifts to Yankee Stadium; 28 year old RH Ed Figueroa getting the call for the Yanks.  16-11, 3.57.  4th year in the bigs, 2nd as a Yankee.  He did not pitch in the '77 Series.  Lou Whitaker works a walk to open, after an out, Gibson walks, he's now reached base 6 times, leading both teams.  Ruppert Jones is getting his first start of the series with the Yanks throwing a RH and he doubles home both men.  Jones is 29, 9th year in the league, first in Detroit.  He was 0-3 in the World Series.  Trammell then follows with a double that scores Jones and it's a big, big first inning for the Tigers.  That's Trammell's third double of the series.  Tigers 3 Yankees 0
1st: Big lead for Juan Berenguer; 29 year old RH, just 11-10 on the season, a 3.48 ERA.  This is Berenguer's 7th big league season, third with the Tigers.  He did not pitch in the '84 Series.  1-2-3.

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Lou Piniella singles with one out - Piniella gets his first start of the series in left today; 24 years later he manages a Mariners club which is also alive in this round.  Piniella is 33 years old and this is his 11th big league season, 4th in New York.  He hit .273 in the '77 Series.  That's all.

3rd: Jones singles with 1 out, Jones making a play for more at bats going forward.  Nothing follows.
3rd: Randolph walks with one out, Bucky Dent had 4 RBI in game 2 and he singles here, Mickey Rivers follows with a single and New York is on the board.  Cliff Johnson homered twice in game 2 - and he singles here to score a run.  Reggie then comes through with his first extra base hit of the series - a bases clearing double and the Yankees have scored 4 runs here in the 3rd.  Tigers 3 Yankees 4

4th: 1-2-3
4th: Randolph walks again, with 2 out, but nothing results.  Of note - Munson took a really questionable third strike call and the umpire starts hearing some chirping from the Yankee bench.

5th: Whitaker singles, an out later Gibson singles -- and then there's Ruppert Jones - you think he was excited to see a right handed Yankee starter -- Ruppert Jones hits a 3 run homer, he's got 5 RBI today and the Tigers go back out in front.  Gil Patterson is a 21 year old right hander at the end of the Yankee bullpen with a 5.40 ERA but he gets the call from Billy, he gets an out - but then gives up back to back singles from Lemon and Bergman.  Darrell Evans walks and the bases are loaded.  Patterson escapes.  Tigers 6 Yankees 4
5th: Cliff Johnson singles with one out and then Reggie doubles again - is #44 heating up?  Berenguer gets the second out - and then the battle of left fielders making their first start today swings back to New York - when Lou Piniella matches Jones with a 3 run homer of his own and the Yankees go back out in front!  Doug Bair is back on for the Tigers, Chambliss singles, that's all - we've got a real offensive show in the Bronx today.  Tigers 6 Yankees 7

6th: Johnny Grubb walks with one out - his first appearance of the series at DH today.  Grubb's 35, it is his 13th big league season, second in Detroit.  Grubb went 1 for 3 in the '84 World Series.  Gibson walks again - he's reached base 9 times in the series, Gibson just an on base machine -- AND THEN RUPPERT JONES HITS ANOTHER 3 RUN HOMER! Ruppert Jones, platooning in left field - playing today against the Yankees only RH starter - has 2 homers and a double - 8 RBI on the day, that's a new record for the tournament - 8 RBI on the day for Ruppert Jones and the Tigers are back out on top.  Dick Tidrow is on for New York.  He gets an out, then Chet Lemon doubles - it ends here.  Tigers 9 Yankees 7
6th: 1-2-3 - Randolph struck out looking here - and the Yankee bench really - let me emphasize, really did not like that call - the plate umpire takes off his mask to shout at the bench and the tensions heat up in the Bronx.

7th: Darrell Evans singles - the veteran Evans is making his first start of the series, the third third baseman Sparky has used so far.  Evans is 37, this is his 16th big league season, first in Detroit.  Evans had a terrible World Series, 1 for 15.  2 outs later Grubb singles, but that's all.
7th: Cliff Johnson homered twice in game 2 - and he hits Bair's first pitch over the right field wall to draw the Yankees closer -- 3 home runs on the series for Johnson tying a tournament record held by many.  Aurelio Lopez comes on for Detroit - he gets two, then Piniella singles, that's all  Tigers 9 Yankees 8

8th: Tidrow gets 2 - then Lemon and Bergman single - Evans flies out to the very deepest part of right field to end the threat.
8th: Munson walks - Randolph takes a called third strike and just goes ballistic - a really questionable call here - Billy is on the field - Billy is kicking dirt - Randolph and Martin held back by Yogi and Elston Howard -- the Yankee fans start throwing object on the field - they might be Reggie Bars - chaos here at Yankee Stadium -- the result is ejections for both Randolph and Martin - Dick Howser will take over in the Yankee dugout and George Zeber will head out to second in the 9th.  For now there's still just one away - and Dent singles - the tying run moves to scoring position, still just one out.  Mickey Rivers singles.  That loads the bases.  Lopez gets the second out and now here we are.  Bases loaded.  2 out.

Reggie Jackson coming to the plate.

Here's the big spot of the series.  Yanks down a run, 2 out - bottom of the 8th, bases loaded - and here comes the big man in the big spot.

Reggie grounds to Evans -- throw onto first.  Out.

9th: 1-2-3, Tidrow goes 3 2/3 scoreless.
9th: It all comes down to this.

The MVP, Willie Hernandez comes on.

Nettles flies to Lemon.
Piniella hits one to the track - Lemon hauls it in.
Chambliss strikes out looking - he just goes off on the plate umpire - and the Yankees just converge now on the plate umpire -- the umpires racing from the field, objects just pouring - just absolutely raining down now - security guards swarming the field to aid the umpires - this entire Yankee dugout furious with that called third strike to end the game.

GAME FOUR

1st Game 4 - Yankees trailing two games to one and they turn to the game 1 loser, their ace, the Gator, Ron Guidry.  In his 14 year career, his 140 ERA+ in '77 is his third best ever mark. 1-2-3.
1st: Dan Petry took game 1 and if he takes game 4 the Tigers will be one of the final 16 teams left in this tournament.  At 121, Petry's ERA+ is tied for his third best ever mark.  Mickey Rivers singles.  He's reached 6 times in the series. Petry gets two, then gives up a single to Piniella, he reached 3 times in game 3 and starts again in left today.  Graig Nettles then scorches a double down the right field line -- everyone will score and it's Tigers 0 Yankees 2

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Willie Randolph, ejected in game 3, walks after one out - it's the fifth time he's reached base.  Bucky Dent singles, he's reached 6 times.  Petry gets through it.

3rd: Lance Parrish walks, quiet series so far for the Tigers catcher. That's all.
3rd: Petry gets one - but then here comes Lou Piniella - he homers to left, he homered in game 3 and does it again now.  Tigers 0 Yankees 3

4th: Chet Lemon walks, he now matches Gibson, each reaching base 8 times so far to lead both teams.  But that's it - Tigers still looking for a hit.
4th: Munson walks, he's now reached 7 times.  That's all.

5th: 1-2-3, Detroit...still looking for a hit.
5th: Petry gets the first - but then Reggie comes through, hits his first homer of the series and extends this Yankee lead.  Piniella and Nettles walk back to back, Petry gets the second out - but then gives up back to back run scoring singles to Munson and Randolph - this game is blown wide, wide open, Petry's gone - Doug Bair enters.  He walks Dent - that's it.  Tigers 0 Yankees 6

6th: Yankees way, way up here - it sure looks like we are headed back to Detroit for game 5, which is a fitting way to kick off the Regional semi-finals.  1-2-3 --- Guidry has retired 8 straight and still...still has not given up a base hit.
6th: Bair gets one - then gives up back to back singles for Jackson and Piniella - the Yankee bats just keep coming today.  Bair gets the second - but then back to back run scoring singles for Chambliss and Munson.  Folks, this one is over.  Start packing your bags for Michigan.  Tigers 0 Yankees 8.

7th: 1-2-3 -- a huge roar, just a thunderous roar here in Yankee Stadium as Guidry goes back to the dugout, he's retired 11 in a row, he's given up only two walks all day long.
7th: Glenn Abbott is a 33 year old RH, he's got a 5.93 ERA, 1-2-3.

8th: So, 6 outs away from a feat never achieved in the tournament.

Whitaker strikes out.
Parrish flies to Piniella.
Garbey grounds to Dent - onto first.  And the inning is over.

8th: Reggie reaches on an error - Abbott then gets two -- but Chris Chambliss puts the cherry on this sundae with a 2 run homer.  Aurelio Lopez makes an appearance again, 4 straight games, he gives up a Munson single, and a Randolph walk. But that's it.  Tigers 0 Yankees 10

9th: 3 outs to go.

HoJo hits Guidry's first pitch into center field for a double.  And the no hitter is gone.
Huge standing ovation for Ron Guidry - back against the wall and the Yankee ace just wipes Detroit out today.

Guidry gets one - then gives up a Chet Lemon triple and the shutout is over.  Guidry gets the second - then gives up back to back run scoring doubles to Jones and Kuntz - the Gator just running on fumes here in the 9th, but Billy leaves him out there - and it ends.

GAME FIVE

1st: Well here we go.  One more at Tiger Stadium and we will move our first team into a Regional Final. Detroit turns to Jack Morris; He was 7th in the Cy Young this year and already has two 3rd place finishes on his resume.  His 109 ERA+ makes this a middling season in his career; he gives up back to back one out walks to Johnson/Jackson, but escapes unscathed.
1st: Not an easy decision for Martin; he's got Mike Torrez and Catfish Hunter, the Yankees 4th and 5th starters - but both are RH and lefties (including Gullett) maybe fare better against this Tiger club.  Plus - you get Gullett against his old manager Anderson.  In the end - he sticks with Don Gullett, Gullett's best years are past, although his 111 ERA+ just outicks Morris's.  1-2-3

2nd: 1-2-3
2nd: Kuntz walks with one out - that's all.

3rd: 1-2-3, that's 8 straight for Morris.
3rd: Dave Bergman doubles with one out.  Sparky had a lot of options today - one choice he made was Bergman, even against the lefty Gullett, at first base.  Nothing results.

4th: Nettles hits a one out single, that's New York's first hit.  Chambliss walks after the second out, but that's all.
4th: 1-2-3...scoreless as we head to the fifth, winner moves on, loser goes home...

5th: 1-2-3
5th: 1-2-3, 8 straight for Gullett - we have a pitchers duel here in game 5.

6th: Morris gets 2 - then walks Nettles, Piniella singles, and then the big shot -- Chris Chambliss hits a 3 run homer - Chambliss homered late in game 4 and he hits a much, much bigger blast here - a 3 run homer to break the scoreless tie.  Huge Yankee celebration - Sparky does not wait at all - Aurelio Lopez enters and ends it.  Yankees 3 Tigers 0
6th: Bergman singles, his second hit -- and he will come all the way around to score on a Darrell Evans triple - the veteran Evans, given the third base start today - comes through to get the Tigers a run back.  Still no one out.  Billy leaves Gullett in - he gets 2 - then walks Gibson -- but escapes with no further damage.  Yankees 3 Tigers 1

7th: Lopez gets two then Rivers singles - just the Yankees 4th hit - Rivers steals second, he's in scoring position - but he's stranded.
7th: How much leash does Gullett get?  New York's 9 outs away.  He gets an out -- then Lance Parrish, without an extra base hit in the series -- hits a homer to right -- it rattles this old ballpark as Detroit has cut this deficit to a run.  Yankees 3 Tigers 2

8th: 1-2-3, Lopez shuts the Yankees down in the 8th - and now Gullett comes back out to the mound.
8th: Gullett gets two - then Chet Lemon doubles - that's the tying run, sitting at second base -- does Billy go to his pen?  Gibson walks - that's the go ahead run standing at first.  But Gullett strikes out Ruppert Jones -- and we are heading to the 9th inning.

9th: 1-2-3, Aurelio Lopez clamps down the Yankees - they get just 4 hits today, but we head to the bottom of the 9th, still 3-2.
9th: Billy leaves his Cy Young closer Sparky Lyle in the bullpen.  Man - that's a real decision right now.  Gullett comes out for the 9th inning - the Yankee pen is rested - Guidry threw a complete game 4  And Sparky Lyle is ready to go right now - but it is Don Gullett who comes out for the 9th.

Kuntz walks.
Parrish walks.  Tying run at 2nd. Winning run at 1st.  Nobody out.
This crowd absolutely howling.
Here comes Sparky Lyle.

Cy Young Award winner.  Future author of the best selling Bronx Zoo that immortalized this Yankee run.

2 on  Nobody out.

Whitaker grounds to Randolph - flip to Dent to get one - onto first....safe.  Kuntz goes to third.

Tying run at 3rd.

Dave Bergman....strikes out.  Huge K for Lyle.  2 on.  2 out.  The veteran Evans coming to the plate.

Sparky Lyle strikes him out and that's the series.

Gullett throws 118 pitches today - he wins both games 2 and 5 -- and then there's Chambliss, his 3 run homer wins game 5 - those 2 are the co-MVPs here.

The 1977 New York Yankees advance to the Region 1 Final.
