Platoon at C, but Lapp has so much bat that he might play in a game 3 even against a LH, platoon at CF, A's going LH-RH-RH; Jack Coombs won 28 games and isn't getting a start in the series.  A's are seed favorites, they have the WAR advantage at C-1B-2B-3B-RF-SP1-SP2

1st: 35 year old lefty Eddie Plank has been an A since 1901; he gets the ball in Game 1, he gives up a leadoff single to Bill Rairden and then a single to George Burns - but that's all.
1st: The Giants counter with 26 year old lefty Ferdie Schupp 21-7, 1.95, he gives up a one out single to Eddie Collins, but nothing else.

2nd: Benny Kauff opens with a base hit, that's it.
2nd: After two out, Rube Oldring singles - steals second - and then scores on an Ira Thomas base hit. Jack Barry singles, but it ends Giants 0 A's 1

3rd: 1-2-3
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: 1-2-3
4th: After two out, Oldring/Thomas single again, but the A's can't add to their lead.

5th: Art Fletcher singles with two out, but the Giants can't move him forward.
5th: Plank leads off with a walk, but the score remains 1-0.

6th: 1-2-3 - Kauff nearly matching Plank.

7th: Heinie Zimmerman singles, but again, nothing for the Giants.
7th: Oldring singles for the third time, but we head to the 8th, still 1-0.

8th: 1-2-3 -- Plank just wiping out New York.
8th: 31 year old right hander Fred Anderson and his 1.44 ERA come on for the Giants, 1-2-3.

9th: Rariden reaches on an error --- and then Burns doubles to left; and now the Giants are in business - two in scoring position and nobody out here in the 9th.  Zimmerman singles - Rariden scores -- Burns comes around -- slides in just - just under the tag - the Giants have taken the lead - this big Shibe Park sellout crowd is shocked - 3 outs from taking game one and now it is totally flipped. Zimmerman took second on the throw home, Mack calls on a 21 year old lefty, Dave Danforth - he gives up a single to Kauff - Zimmerman is going to score and the Giants have 3.  Walter Holke then singles -- but that's all, and that might be enough, Giants 3 A's 1
9th: Anderson gets the first two - and then Oldring singles for the 4th time - tying run on base - but Thomas grounds to short and the Giants have stolen game one.

Giants 3

4th: Smith singles with one out, after the second out, Kauff singles - but that's all.

5th: Baker draws a two out walk and then Lapp singles -- Murphy then singles and the score is tied.  McInnis then hits a fly ball that Robertson loses in the sun - and that scores the go ahead run - and suddenly the A's take the lead A's 3 Giants 2

McGraw brings in the game one winner, Fred Anderson, he gets a fly out from Lord - but it scores a run; Oldring singles and Barry walks and the A's are up 6-4 and have loaded the bases again. Amos Strunk was scheduled to play today, but Mack decided to roll with Oldring after his 4 hit game one -- Strunk comes off the bench here and singles home two runs - the A's are now rolling - up 8-4, Strunk then steals second and an Eddie Collins base hit scores two -- the A's have totally busted this one open.  A's 10 Giants 4
7th: Dave Danforth comes on for the A's, Holke walks, but that's it.

8th: Lapp singles - two outs later, McInnis singles, but that's all.
8th: 23 year old right hander Doc Martin is next for the A's - he hits Smith and while you don't think either batter the Giants have hit today was intentional, given the situation, this might be a little bit of payback.  Lefty pinch hitter Joe Wilhoit doubles, that scores Smith, and after an out Burns walks. 20 year old Lefty Russell comes on for Mack - and Zimmerman hits a two run triple --- and that clears the bases.  I don't know...it's 10-7 and there's still just one out. Holke grounds to the right side, Zimmerman scores, we will go to the 9th inning A's 10 Giants 8

9th: McGaw's next pitcher is 25 year old right hander George Smith. He gives up an Oldring single - he then steals second and scores on a Barry base hit and we will go to the bottom of the ninth A's 11 Giants 8
9th: Mack ain't messing around - he goes back to his game one starter, Eddie Plank, who went 8+ - to close this out - he walks Rariden to open it up -- Plank can't have many pitches in his left arm today - but he gets the next 3 and we will have a game 3.

Walter Holke grounds to the right side and the Giants have the lead; Dave Robertson has been quiet so far in the series - but he triples here, scoring the third run and then Bill Rairden doubles for the 4th - but is thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple - Art Fletcher singles and Jimmy Smith walks - Sallee reaches on an error to load the bases. 5th: Eddie Collins singles with one out, nothing else.

6th: Smith singles with one out, then steals second - and as was the case with the 1919 Reds -- Slim Sallee comes through with the bat - he singles, that scores Smith. It looks like McGraw is about to put another team into the next round. Giants 7 A's 1
6th: Lord singles with two out, that's all.

7th: Burns singles, after an out, Zimmerman singles and then steals second, McGraw not letting up at all - Holke singles - Zimmerman tries to score but Murphy guns him down and the Giants do not score.

Smith singles - and then Sallee does it again - he singles to score 2 runs and it's 10-1 Giants. Lefty Russell comes on for the A's, he gives up a single to Kauff and now it's 11-1 -- and then George Burns hits a 3 run homer; New York has scored 7 runs here in the 8th inning and they are streaming to the exits.  Dave Danforth is the new pitcher - gets two outs, the Giants have hit around again - Robertson walks, Rariden singles, the Giants have 21 hits here in game three Giants 14 A's 1

Zimmerman reached 7 times, Holke 5, Robertson reached 4 times today with a double and triple, Rariden 7 times on the series, Smith 8 times in the last two games.  Just bat after bat after bat. Let's say it's Kauff - you have a 5 hit showdown game, that's good enough.

The Giants move on.  They'll face the winner of this one:

54. 1969 Baltimore Orioles v. 75. 1949 New York Yankees

At least two Yankees squads have advanced in each of the first 5 regions - none, however, in Region 6.  Two more shots; this Yankee team won the World Series; Baltimore did not, they were upset by the Mets.

Orioles-Earl Weaver

Weaver's got a platoon at C; Cuellar and McNally are both LH; Orioles are seed favorites, they have WAR advantage at 1B-2B-SS-3B-LF-CF-RF and all 3 SPs - the Orioles are the biggest WAR favorites we have seen so far in the tournament, except for catcher, they have the advantage at every spot.  That is an overwhelming advantage for Baltimore.

1st: 32 year old lefty Mike Cuellar is the Game One starter for Earl Weaver's Orioles, 23-11, 2.38 - Joe DiMaggio singles with one out, but that's all.

3rd: 1-2-3
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: 1-2-3

7th: 1-2-3
7th: 1-2-3

8th: Johnny Lindell walks and an out later Rizzuto singles, but nothing else.
8th: 26 year old right hander Duane Pillette is the new Yankee pitcher; 1-2-3

9th: DiMaggio leads off with a walk and then Tommy Henrich singles, just New York's 4th hit - and that's all they'll get.

Yankees 0
Orioles 5
WP Cuellar
LP Raschi

4 hit complete game shutout for Cuellar; he also added a run scoring single. Buford and Frank Robinson each reached three times. Blair hit the homer. Hendricks and Belanger both reached twice.

For New York - DiMaggio reached twice as did Lindell.

We go to Yankee Stadium - can New York extend this series?

SS Rizzuto (31)        88       3.2
SP2 Lopat (31)       124        3.5

1st: 31 year old lefty Ed Lopat is tasked with stopping this Oriole team from clinching in Yankee Stadium, 15-10, 3.26, he gives up a one out single to Frank Robinson, that's all.
1st: Baltimore counters with 23 year old right hander Jim Palmer, 16-4, 2.34, Tommy Henrich walks with one out, that's it.

2nd: The Orioles immediately load them up - Davey Johnson/Andy Etchebarren/Mark Belander all walk -- and then they all score on a Brooks Robinson double.  After an out, Don Buford doubles in the 4th run, and then Frank Robinson singles again to add a 5th. Casey goes to the pen for Duane Pillette, after the second out he gives up a Boog Powell single, that's it but that might be the end of this series. Orioles 5 Yankees 0
2nd: 1-2-3

3rd: 1-2-3
3rd: 1-2-3

4th: 28 year old right hander Spec Shea is the next Yankee pitcher, 1-2-3
4th: 1-2-3 and Palmer's retired 11 straight.

5th: Frank Robinson walks and an out later Paul Blair singles, Davey Johnson walks and the Orioles have them loaded up. Tommy Byrne might have started game 3, but he comes on now for Stengel and walks Etchebarren for the 6th run - a Belanger groundout scores another. This series is over; the WAR disparity was real.  Orioles 7 Yankees 0
5th: 1-2-3 -- 14 straight for Palmer, who has not allowed a hit.

6th: 1-2-3
6th: 1-2-3 -- 17 straight for Palmer, the Yankees do not have a hit.

7th: Johnson singles with two out, that's it.
7th: 1-2-3 -- 20 straight for Palmer, he got DiMaggio and Yogi to end the 7th, and now the story has fully shifted here at Yankee Stadium from the long since decided result of this series to what's going on with Jim Palmer.

8th: Belanger opens with a walk - that's all - and Palmer, who has allowed only a first inning walk, comes back to the mound.
8th: Bobby Brown grounds to first, Powell flips to Palmer.  One out.
Cliff Mapes grounds to second - easy play for Johnson.  Two out.
Jerry Coleman hits a lazy fly ball to left center - Buford is there.  Jim Palmer has retired 23 Yankees in a row - he has yet to allow a hit.

9th: Powell hits a one out walk, Blair then singles - but that's as far as it goes.  We head to the bottom of the 9th - Jim Palmer has yet to allow a base hit.
9th: Phil Rizzuto hits the first pitch of the inning into the right field corner -- he's going to come all the way around to third with a triple to break up the no hitter.

Hank Bauer enters as a pinch hitter, grounds out and Scooter scores.  Palmer easily gets the next two outs and it is done.

One hit complete game win for Jim Palmer - the Orioles are just never threatened at all in the series.

Buford reached 4 times in the series, 6 times for Frank Robinson, Blair had two hits today and the big homer in game 1 -- it's gotta be the pitchers.  Cuellar threw a 4 hit shutout and then Palmer came back and only allowed 2 baserunners.  Dominant Orioles pitching in this series.

The '69 Orioles will meet the 1917 Giants in the next round.

We've hit the end of Region 6 -- two series to go.

Platoon in right.  Reds are seed favorite, they are WAR favorite at C-2B-SS-CF-SP2

1st: 25 year old lefty Dutch Ruether. 19-6, 1.82 stands on the mound at Redland Field; the Reds looking to prove their World Series win wasn't due to the Black Sox scandal, and prove it against the other Chicago squad. He walks Phil Cavaeretta with one out, that's all.
1st: The Cubs counter with 36 year old right hander Claude Passeau, 17-9 2.46, he walks Heinie Groh with one out, that's it.

2nd: The first hit of the game belongs to Dewey Williams; catching against lefties in this series, but that's all.
2nd: Greasy Neale is the right fielder against right handed arms; he singles and then Morrie Rath does as well. Larry Kopf walks and the Reds have loaded them up with nobody out - Pat Duncan only had 90 at bats on the season - but he is the left fielder in this series, over the veteran Sherry Magee -- and he clears the bases with a double to left.  An out later, Edd Roush doubles and now it's 4 runs on the inning, and when Groh singles him home we get the huge crooked number Cubs 0 Reds 5

3rd: Heinz Becker is brought in to hit for Passeau, he walks. an out later, Cavarretta walks, but that's all.
3rd: 29 year old right hander Paul Erickson is the next Cub pitcher, he gives up a one out walk to Rath and then a Kopf base hit. Duncan then walks and the Reds bases are full again, after the second out - Roush hits a two run single.  Groh walks - this inning ends Cubs 0 Reds 7

4th: 1-2-3
4th: With one out, Neale and Rath single back to back. The Cubs turn to their rotation; 38 year old right hander Paul Derringer, who will not start in this series, enters, he won 16 games during the season, he gets the second out, but then walks Duncan - and the pitcher, Ruether singles, scoring two - and then Roush follows with a single, that's ten runs - if there's a mercy rule, we'd stop this one here.  Cubs 0 Reds 10

5th: Bill Nicholson gets hit, but that's all.
5th: 1-2-3

6th: Phil Cavarretta gets the Cubs second hit, an out later, Williams walks, that's all.
6th: Kopf hits a two out single, that's all.

7th: Paul Derringer, hitting for himself, singles with 2 out, that's it.
7th: Ivey Wingo draws a two our walk, that's it.

8th: 1-2-3
8th: Neale walks, an out later, Kopf walks, that's it.

9th: Dewey Williams triples to open the inning - Johnson grounds out and the shutout has been broken. Nicholson walks and then Merullo doubles -- Ruether gets the second out but then walks Pafko to load the bases -- and that's where it ends.

Indians have an all right handed staff; so the Yankees have right handed bats we aren't going to see (Howard/Carey) - this lineup has McDougald moving over to second to allow the left handed Kubek a start.  If that overly compromises defense, Coleman would play and Kubel would sit.

Zimmer might play against a RH, but he gives up a lot of bat. Encarnacion sits in New York.  Indians are seed favorites; they're WAR favorites at 1B-SS-3B-LF-DH and all 3 SPs

1st:  31 year old right hander Corey Kluber was a killer in 2017, 18-4, 2.25, he gives up a first pitch single to Jerry Lumpe - as all the Indians starters are right handed, he should be in the lineup at third throughout the series, but that's all.
1st: The Yankees don't have Whitey Ford available to start in the series, so it's 31 year old lefty Bobby Shantz who gets the ball. 11-5, 2.45. Edwin Encarnacion singles with one out, that's all.

2nd: Moose Skowron doubles and then Gil McDougald hits a two run homer - the Yankees jump out on top. Two outs later Tony Kubek and and Harry Simpson single, but that's all. Yankees 2 Indians 0
2nd: Lonnie Chisenhall singles with one out and then Michael Brantley hits a ground rule double; after the second out it looks like Shantz will slip this - but Jason Kipnis hits an 0-2 breaking ball to right to score both men and tie the score.  Yankees 2 Indians 2

3rd: Mickey Mantle singles, Yogi Berra walks, but Kluber bears down and works through it.
3rd: Encarnacion singles again, two outs later Carlos Santana absolutely rakes one, a line drive home run right down the right field line, Yankees 2 Indians 4

4th: 1-2-3

6th: 1-2-3 -- Shantz has retired 10 straight.

7th: You know who had a good year?  32 year old lefty Andrew Miller.  1.44 ERA.  He comes on for Cleveland, Mantle greets him with a base hit, but that's it.
7th: 1-2-3 -- 13 straight for Shantz.

8th: Enos Slaughter leads off with a walk, but that's all.
8th: The Yankees bring in a lefty, 37 year old Tommy Byrne, after two outs, he gives up a walk to Jose Ramirez - and then Francisco Lindor ties the game with a double. Yankees 5 Indians 5

9th: 29 year old right hander Bryan Shaw is next for Cleveland - Lumpe is safely aboard on an error and then he steals second -- that means Mantle and Berra are next with a chance to drive home the go ahead run -- but Shaw gets them both - huge roar from the faithful in Cleveland and we're in the bottom of the 9th.

10th: The Yankees closer is Bob Grim, a 27 year old right hander with 19 saves and he comes on.

He strikes out Kipnis.  But Austin Jackson singles - and the Tribe has the tying man on.
Grim strikes out Encarnacion.  Two away.
Jose Ramirez singles to left center -- two men on, two men out - Indians down a run here in game one...

Lindor...fouls out to first and it's done.
