And now - the top 50 greatest moments in Candlestick History.

#50 November 27, 1989 Monday Night Against New York



Maybe the best rivalry in sports in the 1980s was Niners v. Giants; here, the two best teams in the league, both 9-2 with the Niners the defending champs, met on Monday Night Football (back when that was still Monday Night Football).

San Francisco went up 24-7 at the half; Joe Montana throwing 3 TD passes.  New York scored the next 17, tying the game at 24.  A Mike Cofer FG and Tom Rathman touchdown, both in the 4th quarter, provided the final margin of victory 34-24.

Joe was 27-33 for 292 yards and the 3 scores; the Niner defense had 7 sacks (4 by Pierce Holt) and 3 picks of Phil Simms; we'd go on to win the Super Bowl.

#51 August 24, 1975 The Last No-Hitter

The Giants and Mets were essentially .500 teams playing a meaningless late August doubleheader (San Francisco entered the day 21.5 games out of first place).  The Giants lost game one - but in Game 2, Ed Halicki struck out 10, walking only two, and threw the last no-hitter a San Francisco pitcher was ever going to throw at Candlestick Park.

That's the first 50.  We'll wait until Sunday to start the second 50.

#52 December 26, 1971 The First Playoff Game

The first playoff game ever played at Candlestick ended George Allen's first season as Redskins coach.  John Brodie hit Gene Washington with a 78 yard touchdown pass to tie the game in the third quarter, and a Redskin botched punt attempt recovered by Bob Hoskins in the end zone in the 4th iced it away.  The Niners beat Washington 24-20.

#53 September 6, 1998 96 Yard Run



In overtime of the opening game of the 1998 season, Garrison Hearst had the longest run in 49er history to beat the Jets, 36-30.

JJ Stokes had one of his best ever games, 111 yards receiving and two scores; Hearst had a second touchdown and the Niners were on their way to a 12-4 season.
