Prime 9- First Basemen

MLB Network rebooted its Prime 9 series, the conceit is the 9 greatest players at each position, counting only players who played the majority of their careers post desegregation, players ranked at the positions at which they played the most games.  In the way I've recently upgraded my basketball/football lists, I'm tweaking the baseball formula and my rankings here reflect that launch.

Supersedes prior lists.  Through 2024

The number is an "impact" number designed to cover everything, regular season, playoffs, peak value, career value.  I try to make it math as opposed to a subjective list, which can lead to "why is this guy so high/low/not on the list..."  There's a rate component, so active players may fall backward.  There's a min buy in of 60 regular season win shares.

I'll update after the season.

The 250 Greatest Football Players of All Time

Sunday, December 17, 2023

 Supersedes prior lists.  Through 2023

This is the best of my football lists; I cleaned up the formula - it's football, so the number of inputs isn't as high as either of the other two major sports, but it's pretty good; I like it, I'll roll with it.  The number is an "impact" number designed to cover everything, regular season, playoffs, peak value, career value.  I try to make it math as opposed to a subjective list, which can lead to "why is this guy so high/low/not on the list..." (especially with ultra modern QB, goddamn, you want to see what a steroid era actually looks like?  Look at the jump in the passing stats; the real challenge is less adjusting for era and more that modern QBs have a level of longevity that just adds to their career numbers in ways that require recognition). But - it ain't bad.

I'll update after the season.

Number is the impact number.
