Saturday, November 25, 2023

Supersedes prior lists.  Through 2023.

The number given to each player is an overall impact number - covering regular season, postseason, peak value, career value.  It's the almost exactly the same formula I'm currently using for my NFL career rankings (I cleaned it up a little, it's maybe a little better)  Represents only 49ers value.  The list is dynamic and contains a rate element, so active players may find their rankings drop.  Bad seasons also count.  Everything counts.

100. DEREK SMITH             MLB              2001-07         61
102 starts in 104 49er games in the middle of his career, recovered 8 fumbles, two for scores.

Top pick in the '64 NFL Draft (Charley Taylor was third, Carl Eller was 6th, Paul Warfield 11th. The Niners got Dave Wilcox 29th overall). Only 3 receivers have ever gone number one overall through 2022.  Pro Bowler in 3 of his 4 Niners seasons, 2nd team All Pro in '66 - had a huge 1965, leading the NFL in catches, receiving yards, receiving TDs, receiving yards/game.  12 TDs in a 14 game season.  In Parks' rookie season he set the record for longest 2 receptions in Niner history.  Left as a free agent for the Saints after the '67 season.

2023 Survivor Series Preview+Every Match In Survivor Series History Ranked

Thursday, November 23, 2023

Survivor Series is this weekend.

A note, I've decided to move to a Mania only preview; I may do Rumble '24 (or may just immediately shift to Mania only and not do this until WM40.  I've been doing this for a long time.)

WAR Games: Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn, Jey Uso, Seth Rollins & Randy Orton vs. JD McDonagh, Drew McIntyre, Damian Priest, Finn Balor & Dominick Mysterio

(4 stars, it's good - WWE big matches are good, they're largely well worked, sometimes very well worked, the wrestlers know who they are, the main event storylines in contemporary WWE are generally pretty clear and sometimes more compelling than that - it's a good product; it's never going to be Will Ospreay, these promotions do different things)

WAR Games: Damage CTRL (Bayley, Asuka, Iyo Sky & Kairi Sane) vs. Charlotte Flair, Bianca Belair, Becky Lynch & Shotzi

(see above)

IC: Gunther v. Miz
(3 1/4 stars - Gunther is the greatest IC Champ of all time)

Women's World Title: Rhea Ripley v. Zoey Stark
(not very good, but also short)

Santos Escobar v. Carlito
(and they switched this match at the go home Smackdown, Dragon Lee subbed for Carlito and that made for a 3 1/4 star match).

Perfectly acceptable and entirely forgettable Survivor Series until the last 3 minutes which made it one of the most memorable in the near 4 decade history.

First obvious note, 5 matches is not many matches and the go home RAW (and Smackdown, I believe, I believe Smackdown is taped this week) is done, so they aren't likely to make more.  That is a liiiiight card.  Second obvious note, Roman's not here - the top guy in the promotion for years, the Hogan, the Austin, the Cena, the face that draws the place - nowhere to be seen and it hasn't impacted ratings at all, it would not appear.  WWE is a machine that runs on its own power.

There's not a ton to say about this - both War Games matches should be good because of the stip, they'll obviously both be very long, the structure is the same for both matches - heel stable against a mismatched babyface team. Either Orton goes over or he turns is the most likely outcome in the men's match, either the heels go over or they turn on Bayley is the most likely outcome of the women's match.

In the remaining matches, Gunther and Ripley will both absolutely keep their belts and the only way Escobar doesn't win is a returning Mysterio stops him.  None of those matches seem particularly appealing other than Gunther has been incapable of a bad match and his overcoming the workrate challenge that is Miz has a perverse appeal.

In a wrestling universe where Strickland/Page had a 5 star match a week ago and the reaction to the overall show was it was a little disappoining it's hard to look at a show like this without acknowledging this products are not playing on the same field.  Will Ospreay has maybe had the best year any wrestler has ever had and he's going to be on your AEW tv regularly in 2024.

But also - the Miz.  So, six of one, etc...

I'll watch.  I always watch - and the War Games matches will probably both be pretty good and carry the show, so go nuts.

Here's every match (maybe, I don't check) in the history of Survivor Series ranked.  Show proper, only. Rankings are mine.
