Wrestlemania 39 is this weekend from LA.
WWE is a hot promotion; ratings/house show attendance, Peacock subs - for about a year, it has ridden the main event angle to overcome the perception of AEW as the "cool" company. I'm on a fairly extreme end of the "I really just care about bell to bell" argument, so for me, the most recent AEW PPV, with its two five star matches, just reflects the massive qualitative gap between the two promotions - but I appreciate what's good wherever you find it, and there's upper card good to be found this weekend.
Wrestlemania runs over 2 nights, I'm not going to worry about that breakdown here.

Roman holds both titles, he's had the Smackdown Title (the Universal Title) for almost 3 years and added the lineal WWF/WWE Title at last year's Mania. He has been the focal point of the promotion for the past handful of years; the Bloodline angle, which is the most proximate cause of the spike in interest in the promotion, revolves around him. Reigns deserves the lion's share of the credit for the current state of the company. The run...very likely...ends here; Cody Rhodes jump from AEW is probably the most important on screen event in recent WWE history, it (I'd suggest) changed fan perception of their being a constant talent exodus. All of the storyline indicators point toward the title switch with the only qualifier being...nah, no qualifiers, they're switching this belt. Should be a good match and a big moment.
(The most surprised I've ever been by any wrestling result including Brock ending the Streak - they did a lot of booking here with multiple outside interference spots, it was a 34 minute match, Roman going over - the promotion got sold less than 24 hours later, so whatever level of "what just happened" probably gets washed away with the sale, 4 stars.)
My pick for the likely top match at the event and easily the match to which I'm most looking forward is the tag match. The Usos have held the Smackdown tag belts for nearly 2 years and added the RAW belts last May. The hottest act over the past several months has been Zayn, and WWE incoporating...what...15 years? of the Zayn/Owens story into the Bloodline angle really gave it the extra fuel needed to carry that story all the way to Mania 39. You also have to strongly assume a title switch here in what should be the Night 1 main event - with the qualifier that lingering Owens animosity toward Zayn may come into play here.
(Outstanding, 4 3/4 stars, everything it needed to be with the big babyface win, they fully landed this plane)
Gunther might be the best worker in the entire promotion; he went over Sheamus in the best WWE match from last year; he's had the belt for nearly a year - it's a 3 way, so he could lose the belt without losing the fall and that certainly feels like a possibility. I don't have a great handle on the likely outcome (I'll say he keeps it, why not) but again, this should be a really good match.
(Yo. Wrestlemania was good. 4 1/2 stars, Gunther keeping in a really hard hitting match)
I just don't care about Austin Theory. I've never cared about John Cena. I'd strongly assume Theory goes over in a match I will not enjoy.

Both Women's Title matches should be worth watching; Asuka is probably still a really good worker, she hasnt had the opportunity to demonstrate that a lot in recent years, she isnt positioned with Belair so, while she might take this belt, I wouldn't predict it. Flair's never really worked as a babyface and given Ripley's heavy heel push as (essentially) the leader of Judgment Day this is a clunky dynamic. Ripley's the most over woman in the division and is likely to take this belt.
(Ripley did take the belt in a match that Really overdelivered and got just a tremendous amout of crowd response, that is one of the best women's matches in the history of this promotion, 4 1/4 - the Belair/Asuka match was also really good and likely to get entirely overshadowed, 3 3/4)
Speaking of the Judgment Day - the Balor/Edge blowoff is in the Cell; there really aren't bad present day Cell matches; you'd assume the babyface goes over given this has to be the end of this program, but a weekend where Judgment Day sweeps the board feels like its on the table. Assuming the likelihood that the 3 top mens matches are all very strong - if this match is also very strong, that's a good Mania regardless of the rest of the card.
(These guys beat the hell out of each other; Wrestlemania was good - 3 1/2 stars)
The last Judgment Day match is the Mysterio explosion - Dom just isn't very good in the ring although his heel persona gets a good deal of heat and this match has been strongly built. Putting him over here makes a ton of sense, having Judgment Day win all of these matches (assuming a weekend where Bloodline loses all their belts) is likely an argument I'd make in a booking committee.
(Rey went over in a match that is probably as good as it possibly could have been, crowd was really into it, 3 stars)
Oh - there's what is very likely to be a 5th strong men's match - it's Brock/Om....no, that's a tire fire, Omos seems like a nice enough guy and if this is the end of Brock's deal, he may go over here, but that will be an actively bad match (or a 30 second squash) as there's no evidence he can be a real professional wrestler. No - the other match is Logan Paul/Seth Rollins; Paul is an excellent athlete who has been good every time he's gotten in the ring and this should be his best match to date (apparently, his deal is up, in the extremely unlikely event this makes its way to Tony Khan, while I do not believe he should have any interest in Goldberg; Paul should get a "u up" text the minute its not tampering).
(Rollins/Paul was 4 stars, I'm as antagonistic about celebrity involvement as is anyone and if they put the IC on Paul it would be fine. Dude is an athlete; Brock went over, it was fine.)
The women's trios match is a very likely babyface win; the multi-team tag matches are ways to get some more bodies on the card (hey, Ricochet!) and are unlikely to do a ton more than fill the space. Lashley/Wyatt had been promoted, but whatever is going on with Bray appears to be have scuttled that. We're then left with 13 total matches for two nights and so adding one more to give us 7/7 makes some sense.
(The men's multi team match was a fun spotfest, 3 1/2 stars, the Street Profits went over; the women's trios was a babyface win in a not good match, they did add two short Miz losses, the Women's multi-team match was filler,
Look - it's Wrestlemania, it's the wrestling Super Bowl and so you watch. This year not only have the top couple of matches been very well built there are several matches which should really be good. Pretty easy recommend for Mania 39.
